In this study, electron transport pathways were activated and diversified by coupling counter-diffusion biofilms with micro-electrolysis for Alizarin yellow R (AYR) denitrogenation. Due to the binding of AYR to two residues of EC 4.1.3.36 with higher binding energy, the expression of EC 4.1.3.36 was down-regulated, causing the EC 3.1.2.28 and EC 2.5.1.74 for menaquinone synthesis (redox mediator) undetectable in Membrane aerated biofilm reactors (MABR). Spontaneous electron generation in the micro electrolysis-coupled MABR (ME-MABR) significantly activated two enzymes. Activated menaquinone up-regulated decolourisation related genes expression in ME-MABR, including azoR (2.12 log 2 ), NQO1 (2.97 log 2 ), wrbA (0.45 log 2 ), and ndh (0.47 log 2 ). The diversified electron flow pathways also promoted the nitrogen metabolism coding genes up-regulation, accelerating further inorganic nitrogen denitrogenation after AYR mineralisation. Compared to MABR, the decolourisation, mineralisation, and denitrogenation in ME-MABR increased by 25.80 %, 16.53 %, and 13.32 %, respectively. This study provides new insights into micro-electrolysis enhanced removal of AYR.

A sensitive and selective method based on a poly(alizarin yellow R)-modified carbon paste electrode (PAYR/CPE) to detect dopamine (DA) and uric acid (UA) was successfully established. The morphology of the electrode surface was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Electrochemical characterization of the PAYR/CPE was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). It was illustrated that the PAYR/CPE had excellent electro-catalytic ability toward the oxidation of DA. The anodic peak current of DA was greatly enhanced at the PAYR/CPE, and the standard rate constant (ks) was calculated to be 6.17 s−1. The linear calibration curves were obtained as 0.49–70.1 μM and 83.6–488.1 μM for DA and 27.8–304.4 μM and 381.6–1118 μM for UA by DPV. The detection limits were 0.16 μM for DA and 9.5 μM for UA. Moreover, the modified electrode was applied to the selective detection of DA and UA with high sensitivity and selectivity. Furthermore, the modified electrode displayed high reproducibility and stability for determination of these species. Thus, the proposed electrode could be conveniently employed for the determination of DA and UA in real samples and provide satisfactory results.

Purpose With the aim of enhanced degradation of azo dye alizarin yellow R (AY) and further removal of the low-strength recalcitrant matter (LsRM) of the secondary effluent as much as possible, our research focused on the combination of aerobic bio-contact oxidation (ABO) with iron/carbon microelectrolysis (ICME) process. Materials and methods The combined ABO (with effective volume of 2.4 l) and ICME (with effectively volume of 0.4 l) process were studied with relatively short hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 4 or 6 h. Results At the HRT of 6 h with the reflux ratio of 1 and 2, the AY degradation efficiency in the final effluent was >96.5%, and the total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency were 69.86% and 79.44%, respectively. At the HRT of 4 h and the reflux ratio of 2, TOC removal efficiency and AY degradation efficiency were 73.94% and 94.89%, respectively. The ICME process obviously enhanced the total AY removal and the generated micromolecule acids and aldehydes then that wastewater backflow to the ABO where they were further biodegraded. Conclusion The present research might provide the potential options for the advanced treatment azo dyes wastewater with short HRT and acceptable running costs.

In this study, a novel titanium/zirconium‑tin oxide/alpha‑lead dioxide/beta‑lead dioxide (Ti/Zr-SnO 2 /α-PbO 2 /β-PbO 2 ) electrode was prepared and utilized for degrading alizarin yellow R (AYR) dye. The Integration of impregnation drying, drop coating with a solvent, and high-temperature pyrolysis significantly diminished the characteristic fissure morphology of conventional pyrolytic metal oxide interlayers, thereby modulating the electrodeposition process of alpha‑lead dioxide (α-PbO 2 ) and enhancing electrode stability and electrochemical performance. Electrode characterization revealed that the charge transfer resistance ( R ct ) was 88.0 Ω/cm 2 , and the oxygen evolution potential (OEP, vs. Ag/AgCl) was 2.02 V. The electrochemically active surface area was the largest, with an accelerated lifetime of up to 82.37 h. That was 13.18 times longer than that of the Ti/α-PbO 2 /β-PbO 2 electrode (6.25 h) and 8.83 times longer than that of the Ti/Zr-SnO 2 /β-PbO 2 electrode (9.33 h). Under optimal experimental conditions (400 A/m 2 , 50 mg/L, 20 °C, pH = 8.00), the removal rate of AYR by this electrode was 99.90 %, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate was 74.64 %, the average current efficiency (ACE) was 50.94 %, and the electric energy per order ( E EO ) was 41.17 kWh/m 3 . The AYR degradation process followed to a quasi-zero-order kinetic model ( k = 0.2745 min −1 ). In the real water treatment, AYR and COD removal rates remained above 90.13 % and 62.57 %, respectively. This study demonstrated that the Ti/Zr-SnO 2 /α-PbO 2 /β-PbO 2 electrode significantly improved electrocatalytic performance and stability through the unique preparation of its interlayer, exhibiting great potential for efficient dye wastewater treatment.
