In this study, a biosynthesis process was applied to decorate silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on hydrotalcite (HT) surfaces using Allium tuberosum (AT) L. extract as a green reducing agent. The Sapindus saponaria L. fruit extract was used as a biosurfactant to improve the dispersion of HT in an aqueous medium during the synthesis of AgNPs on HT. The technological factors for the biosynthesis process were optimized using the response surface methodology and the Box-Behnken design. Under optimal conditions, the HT-AgNPs-AT hybrid material (HTAgAT) was characterized by Infrared spectroscopy, Ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, Dynamic light scattering, Scanning electron microscopy, Transmission electron microscopy, Energy dispersive X-ray-Mapping, X-ray diffraction, Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and Thermogravimetric analysis methods. Additionally, the antimicrobial activity of the HTAgAT hybrid material was assessed on E. coli , S. aureus , antibiotic-resistant E. coli , and C. albicans strains. The results confirmed that AgNPs were formed and uniformly distributed on the surface of the HT carrier. The HTAgAT hybrid material exhibited significant antimicrobial activity, which could be sustained for a long time. Furthermore, the HTAgAT hybrid material can remarkably enhance the surface properties and antimicrobial activity of chitosan membranes. The findings suggest that HTAgAT materials are promising for applications in biopolymer composites and antimicrobial materials.

Many methods for management of mirid bugs, one of the major pest species in cotton fields, have been developed in recent decades. The use of attractive plant volatiles may be a safe and effective alternative compared with chemical pesticides. Very little is known about the responses of the bugs to some specific volatiles. In this study, the attractive effects for the mirid bug Apolygus lucorum were evaluated and compared among ethanol extracts obtained from six types of plants. The results showed that A. lucorum had the highest selection response rate to the extract from Allium tuberosum seeds and 70.51% of the adults tended to choose this odour source. Among 40 identified compounds of the volatiles comprising A. tuberosum seed extracts, diethyl phthalate and methyl levulinate had significantly higher attractive effects than that of cotton leaves, but the respective selection response rates were less than 65%. We found that when methyl levulinate and diethyl phthalate were mixed in volume ratios of 3:7 and 6:4, the selection response rates of A. lucorum for the mixtures were 54.67% and 63.65%, respectively. These response rates were significantly higher than those for the two compounds presented alone. Furthermore, the selection response rates of A. lucorum based on these mixtures reached 82.75% and 75.73%, respectively when compared with cotton leaves. The two volatile mixtures also showed a significantly higher attractive effect for Adelphocoris suturalis , with respective selection response rates at 74.58% and 77.80% when compared with cotton leaves. Moreover, the two attractants showed no difference between the responses of male and female mirid bugs. We concluded that an appropriate application of the attractants described herein has the potential to develop a safe and effective approach for the monitoring and control of mirid bugs in cotton fields.

The aim of this research was to evaluate acute toxicity of the essential oil of leaves of Chinese chives, Allium tuberosum Rottler ex Spreng (Asparagales: Alliaceae) and its major constituents against Apolygus lucorum Meyer-Dür (Hemiptera: Miridae). The essential oil of A. tuberosum leaves was obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The major constituents of the oil were sulfur-containing compounds, including allyl methyl trisulfide (36.24%), diallyl disulfide (27.26%), diallyl trisulfide (18.68%), and dimethyl trisulfide (9.23%). The essential oil of A. tuberosum leaves exhibited acute toxicity against Ap. lucorum with an LD 50 value of 20.03 μg per adult. Among the main compounds, diallyl trisulfide (LD 50 = 10.13 μg per adult) showed stronger acute toxicity than allyl methyl trisulfide (LD 50 = 21.10 μg per adult) and dimethyl trisulfide (LD 50 = 21.65 μg per adult). The LD 50 value of diallyl disulfide against Ap. lucorum was 28.10 μg per adult. The results indicated that the essential oil of A. tuberosum and its major constituents may have a potential to be developed as botanical insecticides against Ap. lucorum.

The aim of this research was to evaluate larvicidal activity of the essential oil of Allium tuberosum Rottler ex Sprengle roots and its constituents against larval mosquitoes (Aedes albopictus Skuse). Essential oil of A. tuberosum was obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by gas chromatography and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The major constituents of the oil were found to be sulfur-containing compounds, including allyl methyl trisulfide (35.19%), diallyl disulfide (28.31%), diallyl trisulfide (20.91%), and dimethyl trisulfide (12.33%). The essential oil of A. tuberosum exhibited larvicidal activity against the fourth-instar larvae of Ae. albopictus, with an LC50 value of 18 μg/ml. The constituents compounds—diallyl trisulfide (LC50 = 4 μg/ml) and diallyl disulfide (LC50 = 6 μg/ml)—possessed stronger larvicidal activity than allyl methyl trisulfide (LC50 = 27 μg/ml) and dimethyl trisulfide (LC50 = 35 μg/ml) against the fourth-instar larvae of Ae. albopictus. The results indicated that the essential oil of A. tuberosum and its major constituents have good potential as a source for natural larvicides.
