Preparation of Modified Kaolin Nanoparticle Demulsifier and Its Demulsification Performance for Crude Oil-in-Water Emulsion

You Mu,Shujun Yang,Zhaoqi Shao,Zhikai Fu,Sili Ren

Modified kaolin demulsifiers were synthesized by grafting chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (QC) on kaolin nanoparticles with different particle sizes (KAO1@ATPES-QC and KAO2@ATPES-QC). The morphology, structure, and interfacial activity of kaolin before and after modification were characterized. Contact angle measurement, interfacial tension characterization, and the distribution of nanoparticle materials in the oil–water mixture showed that the nanodemulsifier KAO1@ATPES-QC possessed good interfacial activity and amphiphilicity. ζ-potential measurements showed that grafting QC can significantly increase the ζ-potential of KAO1@ATPES-QC, allowing it to display positive charges over a broad pH range. The demulsification performance of the prepared materials was evaluated by a bottle test. The results show that the modified kaolin with a smaller particle size has better demulsification performance. The prepared KAO1@ATPES-QC possessed excellent demulsification efficiency (DE) in a broad pH range, and the DE reached 99.05% with a dosage of 800 mg/L at 25 °C and pH of 8. Temperature has a very limited impact on demulsification efficiency, indicating that the KAO1@ATPES-QC composite can realize quick and high-efficiency demulsification of the crude oil emulsion at an ambient temperature. The demulsification mechanism showed that good interfacial activity, proper surface charged characteristics, and functional groups are essential for constructing clay mineral demulsifiers with excellent demulsification performance.

Sulfonated cottonseed hydrolysates with adjustable amphiphilicity as environmental -Stress stable emulsifiers

Kwame Eduam Baiden Frempong,Guiqiang He,Meng Kuang,Min Xue,Jie Wang,Yanxia Wei,Jian Zhou

Cottonseed protein isolate (CPI) is a valuable agro-industrial waste with potential biotechnological applications. However, inadequate stability in water due to its characteristic hinders its widespread use. Therefore, a new sulfonation modification approach was developed to improve the amphiphilicity and structural flexibility of CPI. Structural characterizations confirmed the successful incorporation of sulfonate groups with structural and conformational changes. This significantly unfolded molecular-chain, and improved amphiphilicity, flexibility, and surface-hydrophobicity while reducing pI (5.1–1.7), and molecular-weight (5745–2089 g/mol). The modified samples exhibited improved emulsification with higher amounts of absorbed proteins on the droplet interface, smaller droplet size, and a higher zeta-potential. Additionally, they possessed good emulsification ability under acidic conditions. The nano-emulsions exhibited long-term stability (≥70 days) under different environmental conditions, with excellent fluidity. This study contributes to understanding sulfonation as a viable approach for improving protein properties, thus, opening up new possibilities for their application and maximizing their economic benefits.

Facet-dependent wettability of Janus Serpentine nanosheets: Direct nanoscale evidence of Amphiphilicity

Yan Xiang,Xing Gao,Tao Xu,Donghui Wang,Wei Sun,Longhua Xu,Zhoujie Wang,Lei Xie

Facet-dependent wettability is a fundamental yet poorly understood principle governing the stability, aggregation, and performance of 2D Janus materials in diverse separation processes such as oil recovery and pollutants adsorption. However, the direct and quantitative characterization of nanoscale wettability on individual nanosheets remains challenging. Natural serpentine was selected as a representative Janus nanosheet system comprising distinct MgOH, SiO and typical edge facets. A combination of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (EX-DLVO) theory was used to quantitatively characterize the facet-specific hydrophobicity of serpentine nanosheets. Hydrophobic interactions between individual facets and self-assembled monolayers functionalized AFM tips were quantified, followed by EX-DLVO fitting to extract hydrophobic decay lengths. To uncover the molecular origins of facet-dependent wettability, density functional theory (DFT) was performed to evaluate water adsorption configurations and energies. We report the first direct quantification of anisotropic wettability in Janus nanosheets. The MgOH and edge facets were fully hydrophilic, displaying no measurable hydrophobic interaction, consistent with stronger water adsorption energies (−27.62 and − 108.50 kJ mol −1 ). In contrast, the Si O facet exhibited clear hydrophobicity, characterized by hydrophobic decay lengths of 1.00 ± 0.05 nm (pH 5.5) and 1.20 ± 0.05 nm (pH 8.5), which was supported by weaker water adsorption (−18.93 kJ mol −1 ). The insights obtained in this work establish serpentine nanosheets as potential easily exfoliated Janus materials for separation processes involving enhanced oil recovery, emulsion separation, adsorption, and provide guidance for the design of mineral processing reagents.

Salt Anion Amphiphilicity-Activated Electrolyte Cosolvent Selection Strategy toward Durable Zn Metal Anode

Liyang Liu,Haiying Lu,Chao Han,Xianfei Chen,Sucheng Liu,Jiakui Zhang,Xianghong Chen,Xinyi Wang,Rui Wang,Jiantie Xu,Hua Kun Liu,Shi Xue Dou,Weijie Li

One effective solution to inhibit side reactions and Zn dendrite growth in aqueous Zn-ion batteries is to add a cosolvent into the Zn(CF3SO3)2 electrolyte, which has the potential to form a robust solid electrolyte interface composed of ZnF2 and ZnS. Nevertheless, there is still a lack of discussion on a convenient selection method for cosolvents, which can directly reflect the interactions between solvent and solute to rationally design the electrolyte solvation structure. Herein, logP, where P is the octanol–water partition coefficient, a general parameter to describe the hydrophilicity and lipophilicity of chemicals, is proposed as a standard for selecting cosolvents for Zn(CF3SO3)2 electrolyte, which is demonstrated by testing seven different types of solvents. The solvent with a logP value similar to that of the salt anion CF3SO3– can interact with CF3SO3–, Zn2+, and H2O, leading to a reconstruction of the electrolyte solvation structure. To prove the concept, methyl acetate (MA) is demonstrated as an example due to its similar logP value to that of CF3SO3–. Both the experimental and theoretical results illustrate that MA molecules not only enter into the solvation shell of CF3SO3– but also coordinate with Zn2+ or H2O, forming an MA and CF3SO3– involved core–shell solvation structure. The special solvation structure reduces H2O activity and contributes to forming an anion-induced ZnCO3–ZnF2-rich solid electrolyte interface. As a result, the Zn||Zn cell and Zn||NaV3O8·1.5H2O cell with MA-involved electrolyte exhibit superior performances to that with the MA-free electrolyte. This work provides an insight into electrolyte design via salt anion chemistry for high-performance Zn batteries.

Tuning Supramolecular Polymers’ Amphiphilicity via Host–Guest Interfacial Recognition for Stabilizing Multiple Pickering Emulsions

Shujuan Yang,Wenqi Qin,Furui He,Xinyu Zhao,Qichang Zhou,Feilin Lin,Houkui Gong,Siqi Zhang,Gaobo Yu,Yuhong Feng,Jiacheng Li

Supramolecular host–guest chemistry bridging the adjustable amphiphilicity and macromolecular self-assembly is well advanced in aqueous media. However, the interfacial self-assembled behaviors have not been further exploited. Herein, we designed a β-cyclodextrin-grafted alginate/azobenzene-functionalized dodecyl (Alg-β-CD/AzoC12) supra-amphiphilic system that possessed tunable amphiphilicity by host–guest interfacial self-assembly. Especially, supra-amphiphilic aggregates could be utilized as highly efficient soft colloidal emulsifiers for stabilizing water-in-oil-water (W/O/W) Pickering emulsions due to the excellent interfacial activity. Meanwhile, the assembled particle structures could be modulated by adjusting the oil–water ratio, resulting from the tunable aggregation behavior of supra-amphiphilic macromolecules. Additionally, the interfacial adsorption films could be partially destroyed/reconstructed upon ultraviolet/visible irradiation due to the stimuli-altering balance of amphiphilicity of Alg-β-CD/AzoC12 polymers, further constructing the stimulus-responsive Pickering emulsions. Therefore, the supramolecular interfacial self-assembly-mediated approach not only technologically advances the continued development of creative templates to construct multifunctional soft materials with anisotropic structures but also serves as a creative bridge between supramolecular host–guest chemistry, colloidal interface science, and soft material technology.

Selective reducing end modification of cellulose nanocrystal with tailoring amphiphilicity toward enhanced Pickering emulsion stabilization

Yanjun Tang,Hanlu Zhu,Peng Zhu,Zhonglei Huang,Miao Zhang,Tong Luo

Cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) is regarded as a promising bio-based material for emulsion stabilization owing to its high specific surface area, abundant hydroxyl groups, and tunable surface chemistry. However, the inherent hydrophilicity of CNC considerably limits interfacial activity at oil-water interfaces, posing a significant challenge for practical emulsion applications. In this study, the amphiphilicity of CNC was engineered through selective reducing end modification to enhance Pickering emulsion stabilization. Structural and chemical analyses confirmed the successful introduction of amine without disrupting the native crystalline structure of CNC. The conversion rate was dependent on the synergistic effects of amine nucleophilicity and solvent polarity, with an optimal conversion rate of 61.17%. Notably, the modified CNC exhibited tunable surface wettability (water contact angle increased to 45.5°) and colloidal stability (zeta potential ranging from −20.31 to −24.89 mV), enabling effective modulation over hydrophilic–hydrophobic balance. As a proof-of-concept, the amphiphilic CNC was capable of stabilizing Pickering emulsions featuring uniformly dispersed droplets, indicative of favorable interfacial activity. Rheological behavior further revealed an elastic-dominated behavior, corroborating the high stability of the interfacial layer. These findings open up new avenues for broadening the application of CNC in emulsion formulations across the fields of food science, cosmetics, pharmaceutics, and waterborne coatings.

Integration of Bile Acid-Based Facial Amphiphilicity and Lysine Chirality for Eradicating Drug-Resistant Bacteria

Yunpeng Gao,Ran Chen,Kaojin Wang,Caihong Lin,Weimin Xiao,Qian Sun,Yukang Liu,Meng Zhang,Lin Wang,Yong-Guang Jia,Xiaoxia Zhu

In response to the increasing threat of drug-resistant bacteria, numerous antibacterial peptide (AMP) mimics have been developed and shown substantial efficacy in killing bacteria. However, controlling the secondary structure of these mimics and clarifying the relationship between their conformation and antibacterial activity remain significant challenges. This study integrates facially amphiphilic bile acid scaffolds with chiral lysine centers to construct a series of bile acid–lysine polymers (BALP-n) as AMP mimics. Incorporating chiral centers into the polymer backbone allowed the induction and modulation of a stable antiparallel β-sheet secondary structure, reinforced by hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions. For example, BALP-1 exhibited 51.9% antiparallel β-sheet content at pH 7.4 and demonstrated rapid bactericidal activity against Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, and drug-resistant strains. In a weakly acidic environment, the antiparallel β-sheet content increased to 56.2%, accompanied by enhanced antibacterial performance. This chirality-driven strategy enables pH-responsive “on-demand” activation and improved membrane selectivity, distinguishing it from conventional cationic antibacterial polymers. BALP-1 also showed high stability under elevated temperatures and in the presence of proteinase K. Moreover, these AMP mimics displayed excellent biocompatibility, potent in vivo antibacterial activity, and the ability to promote wound healing, offering a promising approach to combat drug-resistant bacteria and biofilms.

Highly Amphiphilicity-Tailorable Pineapple-Like Janus Nanozymes with Superior Kinematic Locomotion Facilitates Biphasic Chemiluminescence Analysis

Xin Jiang,Wan Wei,Yueming Zhao,Lingli Zhang,Wenwen Wang,Yuting Zhao,Zhongjie Zhu,Zhifeng Fu,Chengzhou Zhu,Hui Ouyang

Background Due to ideal stability, ease of preparation and high cost efficiency, nanozymes have been adopted as the substitutes of natural enzymes in homogeneous catalysis. However, the application of nanozymes was restricted caused by unsatisfactory emulsifying ability in heterogeneous catalysis. Albeit some asymmetric structures on Janus nanozymes are proposed for biphasic catalysis, the precise tuning of their amphiphilicity poses significant challenges especially through one-step self-assembly protocols. Results Herein, a facile controlled self-assemble protocol is developed to circumvent the utilization of the monophasic sphere as the beginner of Janus nanostructures. Pineapple-like Janus supports can be acquired by the simultaneous polymerization of resorcinol−formaldehyde resins and mesoporous SiO 2 nanoparticles. Through the subtle alteration of dual precursors, the accurate tuning of asymmetric proportion allows for the tailorable amphiphilicity of Janus supports. By efficiently anchoring active Ce moieties onto Janus supports, asymmetric Ce@Janus nanozyme possesses superior kinematic locomotion and improved emulsion stabilization ability for dramatically boosting biphasic catalysis. Compared with monophasic nanozymes, Ce@Janus nanozyme with increased active sites and enhanced substrate affinity facilitates the biphasic chemiluminescent enhancement for the precise supervision of fentanyl with the detection limit of 0.47 pg·mL -1 , by utilizing CDP-Star chemiluminescent reaction as a mode biphasic system. Significance Moreover, the universality of the Janus support for biphasic nanozymes is demonstrated by the successful loading of a series of active metal sites including Pt, Cu, and Au for pressure sensing, colorimetric assay and photothermal analysis. The principle-of-proof work opens an avenue for the facile regulation of amphiphilic asymmetric nanozymes, which contributes to the intriguing biphasic catalysis efficiency for trace analysis.

Enhancing the Gene Transfection of Poly(β-amino ester)/DNA Polyplexes by Modular Manipulation of Amphiphilicity

Jiahao Shi,Yuhe Zhang,Bin Ma,Haiyang Yong,Delu Che,Chaolan Pan,Wei He,Dezhong Zhou,Ming Li

Poly(β-amino ester)s (PAEs) have been widely developed for gene delivery, and hydrophobic modification can further enhance their gene transfection efficiency. However, systematic manipulation of amphiphilicity of PAEs through copolymerization with hydrophobic monomers is time-consuming and, to some extent, uncontrollable. Here, a modular strategy is developed to manipulate the amphiphilicity of the PAE/DNA polyplexes. A hydrophobic polymer (DD-C12–122) and a hydrophilic polymer (DD-90–122) are synthesized separately and used as a hydrophobic module and a hydrophilic module, respectively. The amphiphilicity of polyplexes could be manipulated by changing the ratio of the hydrophobic module and hydrophilic module. Using the modular strategy, the PAE/DNA polyplexes with the highest gene transfection efficiency and safety profile as well as possible mechanisms are identified. The modular strategy provides a novel way to engineer the hydrophobicity of PAEs to improve their gene transfection and can be easily generalized and potentially extended to other polymeric gene delivery systems.

Room temperature dissolution of cellulose in tetra-butylammonium hydroxide aqueous solvent through adjustment of solvent amphiphilicity

Wei Wei,Meng Fanbin,Cui Yuhu,Jiang Man,Zhou Zuowan

The amphiphilicity of solvent systems is realized for adjusting the dissolution of natural cellulose by making use of tetra-butylammonium hydroxide (TBAH) as an example. TBAH aqueous solution is found to have an obvious effect on adjusting its amphiphilicity, along with a flexible concentration ranging from 40 to 60 wt% for dissolving cellulose. With a suitable amphiphilic property, cellulose can be dissolved by a TBAH aqueous system . The experimental results demonstrate that with the introduction of urea (more than 0.2:1, w:v) into a TBAH aqueous system, the dissolution process of cellulose can be dramatically promoted, leading to a transparent solution of cellulose. Herein, a complex solvent of TBAH/urea has been proposed for mild and effective dissolution of cellulose under ambient conditions. In the TBAH/urea complex solvent, the structure of the hybrid hydrate of TBAH and urea formed. Urea served as a hydrophobic contributor adjusting the amphiphilicity of the solvent system, allowing interfacial resistance between the amphiphilic crystal surfaces of the natural cellulose and solvent to be reduced. After that, the crystal of natural cellulose could be fully infiltrated and subsequently dissolved by the TBAH/urea aqueous solvent. The performances of the aqueous solvent and ambient temperature dissolution make aqueous TBAH/urea a potential and green solvent of cellulose for broad applications, such as composites, films or wet spinning of cellulose, in laboratories or industries.

Synthesis of fluorescent ionic liquid-functionalized silicon nanoparticles with tunable amphiphilicity and selective determination of Hg2+

Quan Li,Kaite Peng,Yanzhen Lu,Aoxin Li,Fenfang Che,Yuanyuan Liu,Xingjun Xi,Qiao Chu,Tao Lan,Yun Wei

Fluorescent silicon nanoparticles have attracted much attention in recent years due to their superior optical properties, strong photostability, low toxicity, and favorable biocompatibility. In this paper, we have prepared imidazolium ionic liquid-functionalized silicon nanoparticles (IL@SiNPs) via a simple one-pot hydrothermal route from 1-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride that was denoted as [SmIm]Cl and sodium citrate. The synthetic IL@SiNPs could be a novel label-free sensing probe for sensitive and selective detection of Hg2+ ions with energy transfer from IL@SiNPs to Hg2+. A good linear relationship was obtained from 0 to 40 μmol L−1 with a detection limit of 0.45 μM. Furthermore, the solubility of the IL@SiNPs can be facilely converted by anion exchange without complex chemical modification. The ionic liquid-modified SiNPs may show great promise in biological and environmental applications due to their excellent biocompatibility and optical performance.

Amphiphilicity-Driven Small Alcohols Regulate the Flexibility of Pesticide-Loaded Microcapsules for Better Foliar Adhesion and Utilization

Haichao Cao,Yue Chen,Zhigang Qian,Tingjie Huang,Nan Zou,Daxia Zhang,Wei Mu,Beixing Li,Feng Liu

The foliar loss of pesticides causes serious utilization decline and environmental risk. On the basis of biomimetics, pesticide-loaded microcapsules (MCs) with spontaneous deformation on foliar micro/nanostructures, like the snail suction cup, are prepared by interfacial polymerization. By controlling the usage or types of small alcohols in the MC preparation system, the flexibility of MCs is tunable. Through the investigation of emulsions and MC structures, we discover that the migration and distribution of small alcohols driven by amphiphilicity affect the process of interfacial polymerization between polyethylene glycol and 4,4-methylenediphenyl diisocyanate. By hydrophobic modification of the polymer and competition for oil monomers of small alcohols, the thickness and compactness of shells are reduced, whereas the density of the core is increased. As a result of the regulation in structures, the flexibility of MCs is improved significantly. In particularly, the MCs-N-pentanol (0.1 mol kg–1) with the best flexibility show strong scouring resistance on varied foliar structures, sustained release property on the air/solid interface, and persistent control effect against foliar diseases. The pesticide-loaded soft MCs provide an effective way to improve pesticide foliar utilization.
