Analcime (ANA) crystals have wide applications in the field of selective adsorption, nanoelectronics, light gas/hydrocarbon mixture separation, and radioactive element adsorbents. However, many organic templates were necessary to synthesize ANA crystals in previous work, causing significant environmental pollution and high cost. Thus, it is crucial to synthesize single ANA crystals under a simple system without the organic template. Herein, we explore the synthesis of large single ANA crystals (size up to 210 μm) in the template-free system of SiO2 : 0.274Al2O3 : 1.79Na2O : 190H2O at 180 °C for 40 h. The absence of expensive organic templates and hydrofluoric acid (HF) dramatically reduces the costs and pollution. This makes the method more conducive to mass production. Meanwhile, we report a series of growth conditions for ANA crystals with different sizes, which is more conducive for the preparation of the required ANA single crystals for different application scenarios.

Analcime has demonstrated potential for a variety of applications in technology, especially in adsorption and heterogeneous catalysis. In this study, synthetic analcime was investigated by using sea sand as a silica source. Sea sand was first treated with HNO3and NaOH. The pretreated sea sand as the silica resource and Al(NO3)3as the aluminum source were used for the hydrothermal synthesis of analcime with different ratios of Si/Al and Na/Si. The products obtained under different conditions were characterized by X-ray diffraction. The results showed that analcime synthesized using acid-treated sea sand was mixed with other impurities, such as quartz and sodalite. Pure analcime was obtained using alkali-treated sea sand as the silica source. The analcime prepared under an optimized synthesis condition was further investigated via SEM, FT-IR, and TG. The particle size of the prepared analcime ranged from 40 to 50 μm. The adsorption ability of analcime was studied, and the Cu2+adsorption process was found to follow apseudo-second-order kinetic model.

Due to the large output and potential ecological risks, disposal of engineering abandoned soils (EAS) has become an enormous challenge for human society. Herein, EAS has been transformed into microporous analcime (ANA) zeolite material through a fast, energy-efficient, and straightforward conversion process. The as-synthesized ANA has been employed to remediate Cu-polluted soil, which shows a significant ecological restoration function in a vegetable pot experiment. With 25 g/kg ANA into Cu contaminated soil (total Cu concentration: 200 ppm), the Cu accumulation concentration in vegetables has been decreased from 5.60 down to 1.80 mg/kg (approaching the background Cu level 1.70 mg/kg in vegetables). Detailed mechanism study combining with DFT calculations reveals that the Cu 2+ in soil has been captured both inside the ANA pore channels and on the surface via ion-exchange and surface adsorption mechanism. The whole process, including ANA synthesis and Cu polluted soil remediation , has been optimized to show a valuable conceptual model to recycle EAS resource and in-situ remediate Cu polluted soil.

Reduction and stabilization of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in groundwater are essential for mitigating environmental and human health risks. In this work, we demonstrate the development of FeS2/Re-ANA composites (PM/RAs), a multifunctional material that integrates the chemical and photochemical reduction function within FeS2 with the ion-exchange capacity of the red soil-converted ANA type of zeolites for effective reduction and stabilization of Cr(VI) in groundwater. The PM/RA-3 composite material obtained an impressive Cr(VI) removal rate of 98.90% in a solution with 1 mg L−1 Cr(VI), reducing the residual concentration to 0.011 mg L−1, which complies with the WHO standards for drinking water quality. A detailed mechanistic investigation reveals that FeS2 facilitates both chemical and photoreduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III), which is subsequently either adsorbed onto the FeS2 surface or immobilized through an ion-exchange process within the zeolite microporous channels. Furthermore, fixed-bed column studies using groundwater samples contaminated with Cr(VI) from a chromate production facility double confirmed the material's effectiveness in meeting discharge standards under environmentally relevant water conditions. This work highlights the potential of employing FeS2/Re-ANA composites as a promising material for treating Cr(VI)-polluted groundwater in permeable reactive barriers, offering a significant advancement for the control of the widespread Cr(VI)-contaminated groundwater pollution.

Simultaneously reducing and immobilizing Cr(VI) anions in groundwater are crucial to minimize their hazardous effects. Herein, benefiting from the feasible chemical-/photo-reduction capability of greigite, together with the ion-exchange functionality of zeolites, the integrated three-in-one function in greigite/Re-ANA composites (GRAs) material has been employed for removing and immobilizing Cr(VI) in groundwater remediation. GRA-3 achieved a 99.4% Cr(VI) removal efficiency in a Cr(VI) solution with 1 mg/L. Cr(VI) residue concentration is 0.006 mg/L, complying with the control guideline in drinking water according to WHO regulations. A comprehensive mechanism study reveals that the chemical reduction and photoreduction processes are involved within greigite, which drives the process of reducing Cr(VI) to Cr(III). Subsequently, the as-reduced Cr(III) is either adsorbed on a greigite surface or ion-exchanged with zeolite microporous channels, thus getting immobilized. Furthermore, environmentally relevant Cr(VI) contaminated groundwater sampling from the chromate plant has been employed for the fixed-bed column study, which achieved the discharge standard for practical Cr(VI) polluted groundwater. This work reported a composite material matrix with great potential and significance for Cr(VI) remediation, which could be employed in permeable reactive barriers for Cr(VI)-polluted groundwater remediation in the future.
