Production of phenol-rich bio-oil from Arundo donax via catalytic pyrolysis over SAPO-31

Xin Su,Guosheng Li,Chao Fan,Tingting Zhou,Jing Liu,Beibei Yan,Yang Zhang,Guanyi Chen,Jingang Yao

Herein, the SAPO-31 produced phenol-rich bio-oil from Arundo donax (AD) via catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) in a fixed bed. Effective variables including type of catalyst, temperature, weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) and N 2 flow rate (Nfr) were evaluated to enhance the CFP. The results showed that SAPO-31 demonstrated selectivity of 80.28 % towards naphtha-range compounds and 33.57 % towards phenolic compounds (PCs) within the naphtha range at 500 °C, Nfr of 300 mL min −1 and WHSV of 1 h −1 , contrasting sharply with those of control groups (50.82 % and 14.40 %, respectively), HZSM-5 (67.66 % and 5.51 %, respectively) and Hβ (61.10 % and 25.50 %, respectively). Moreover, SAPO-31 gave the highest bio-oil yielded (26.97 wt%) compared to that of the control group (22.45 wt%), Hβ (22.21 wt%) and HZSM-5 (21.42 wt%). These results indicate that the SAPO-31 self-synthesized exhibits promising capabilities in producing phenol-rich naphtha-range compounds via the CFP of AD.

Regulating the metabolites through SiC, ZnO, and SnO2 nano-photocatalysts for elevating efficiency of photo fermentative bioH2 from Arundo donax L.

Mujeeb Alam,Danping Jiang,Huan Zhang,Lei Zhang,Faiqa Nadeem,Nadeem Tahir,Chaoyang Lu,Quanguo Zhang

Photo-fermentation offers a promising roadmap for hydrogen production through their ability to harness light energy, however, its lower conversion efficiency is the major bottleneck for its realization. This study investigates the catalytic role of wideband gap nano-photocatalysts (SiC, ZnO, and SnO 2 ) in enhancing hydrogen generation from Arundo donax L. Physio-optical characteristics of SiC, ZnO, and SnO 2 nano-photocatalysts were assessed through SEM, XRD, and FT-IR which confirmed that incorporated nano-photocatalysts are spherical with uniform size distribution and there is no secondary phase. Hydrogen production experiments with varying nano-photocatalyst concentrations revealed that the maximum hydrogen yield of 104 and 98.83 mL/g was achieved with SiC and ZnO, respectively, at loading concentration of 200 mg/L, whereas 69.30 mL/g were observed with 100 mg/L of SnO 2 . The incorporation of SIC, ZnO, and SnO 2 nano-photocatalyst permitted to increase the hydrogen content in overall gas production by 41 %, 37.34 %, and 18.26 % as compared to the control group. The increase in hydrogen production is related to the enhanced e-h pair separation lifetime of SiC, confirmed from PL spectroscopy. Addition of SiC caused a longer availability of electrons that helped to increase the metabolic rate by 38 % and 40.29 % in energy conversion efficiency (ECE). ANOVA results revealed significant differences between the control and maximum values of CHP, HC%, byproducts, and ECE. Tukey pairwise comparisons showed that SiC and ZnO had non-significant differences at 200 mg/L but both significantly outperformed SnO 2 at 100 mg/L. Thus, the selection of suitable catalysts photocatalysts with enhanced e-h pair separation lifetime may offer promising prospects for sustainable energy technologies by enhancing biohydrogen production.

Enhanced production of naphtha-range compounds from arundo donax via catalytic fast pyrolysis using SAPO-11

Xin Su,Chunquan Liu,Jing Liu,Guanyi Chen,Beibei Yan,Jingang Yao,Zhanjun Cheng,Weiming Yi

Arundo donax, acknowledged for its elevated energy content, substantial biomass yield and rapid growth, stands as an alluring candidate for biofuel production. In this investigation, a molecular sieve-based catalyst was utilized to scrutinize the catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) of Arundo donax, aiming for the production of naphtha-range compounds. The study also encompassed the evaluation of pyrolysis product yields within a fixed-bed reactor. The systematic exploration included an assessment of the impacts arising from catalyst type, temperature, weight hourly space velocity (WHSV), and N 2 flow rate. The results demonstrated that at 500 °C, WHSV of 1 h −1 and N 2 flow rate of 300 ml/min, SAPO-11 exhibited a selectivity of 64.55% to naphtha-range compounds and 64.55% to isomerous naphtha-range compounds. This was in stark contrast to the control group, which contained no catalyst (with a selectivity of 41.40% and 3.19%, respectively), SAPO-41 (with a selectivity of 11.02% and 9.55%, respectively) and HZSM-5 (with a selectivity of 59.89% and 53.51%, respectively). Additionally, SAPO-11 yielded the highest bio-oil compared to other catalysts (SAPO-11 of 28.52 wt% > none of 19.48 wt% > HZSM-5 of 18.90 wt% > SAPO-41 of 13.11 wt%). The conclusions drawn from these findings imply that the synthesized SAPO-11 catalyst exhibited superior catalytic activity and isomerization proficiency in contrast to other catalysts (SAPO-41 and HZSM-5). Remarkably, under the specified conditions of SAPO-11 catalyst, temperature = 500 °C, WHSV = 1 h −1 and N 2 flow rate = 200 ml/min, the CFP process yielded a remarkable maximum absolute yield of the naphtha-range compound at 25.82 wt%, with an isomerized naphtha-range compound absolute yield of 25.35 wt%.

Unleashing High-Efficiency Biohydrogen Production from Arundo donax L. through interfacial charge transferring in hybrid catalytic systems by regulating metabolism

Mujeeb Alam,Zheng Wang,Zhiping Zhang,Hina Ramzan,Jiang Danping,Faiqa Nadeem,Siming You,Quanguo Zhang

This study examines photo-fermentative biohydrogen production (PFHP) from Arundo donax L. using binary (SiC/ZnO) and ternary (SiC/ZnO/SnO 2 ) co-catalyst systems. The maximum cumulative hydrogen production of 110 mL/g and hydrogen production rate of 39.74 mL/g·h⁻¹ at 24h was achieved in ternary-C2 group of ternary system which was 73.23% higher as compared to the CG (63.5 mL/g), also outperforms binary system (97.58 mL/g, 35.81mL/g·h⁻¹) by 12.73% and 10.97%. The binary system achieved a 48.67% hydrogen content percentage, while the ternary system had 52.53%, which is 14% and 18.3% higher than the control group. Multi-interface heterojunctions occur synergistically, which is the source of the increased activity. In addition to accelerating electron migration and inhibiting electron–hole recombination, this arrangement facilitates effective interfacial charge transfer. Together, these effects produce a favourable redox environment that improves bacterial metabolism and sustains a process of hydrogen production. Maximum light absorption and charge-separation efficiency may explain the ternary system's faster metabolism and microbial activity. Ternary system hydrogen production enhanced the charge transfer by reducing the oxidation-reduction potential (-408 mv) and lag phase reduced to 8.48h from 14.71h in binary system, a 53.73% performance boost. Maximum Energy Conversion Efficiency of 8.1% was achieved in experimental group ternary-C2 of ternary system which is 12% and 52.83% better than binary system (7.2%) and control (5.3%). The ternary system provides a better hydrogen production metabolite route and reduces VFA’s accumulation.

Characterization of raw and treated Arundo donax L. cellulosic fibers and their effect on the curing kinetics of bisphenol A-based benzoxazine

Wissam Bessa,Djalal Trache,Mehdi Derradji,Houda Ambar,Ahmed Fouzi Tarchoun,Mokhtar Benziane,Bendiba Guedouar

In the present work, giant reed cellulosic fibers ( Arundo donax L., RF) were explored as reinforcement of bisphenol A-based benzoxazine (BA-a). RF were extracted from giant reed cane, and subjected to different chemical treatments using either alkaline, silane or their combining treatments. The examination of the structural, thermal, crystallinity and morphological properties of the untreated (NRF) and treated fibers (TRF) was carried out using different analytical techniques. Broadly, the morphology of the treated fibers is affected, their crystallinity and thermal stability increased. The investigation of the effect of the treated fibers on the curing kinetics of composites based on BA-a was performed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) technique, under non-isothermal conditions, and isoconversional integral kinetic methods. A decrease in the heat of curing as well as activation energy ( Ea ) was reported. The Avrami-Erofeev autocatalytic kinetic model was the most appropriate to describe the curing reactions and the predicted curves from the calculated kinetic parameters fitted well with experimental data.

Carbon–sulfur regulation for deep nitrogen removal in Arundo donax straw/elemental sulfur-amended surface flow constructed wetlands: Metagenomic and metabolomic insights

Yanjie Zhang,Huan Wang,Yu Ling,Haiyan Wang,Shu Wang,Xiyao Wang,Fan Liu

1:1 A. donax /S 0 achieved 77.6 % TIN removal with low net SO2–4 accumulation. • A. donax /S 0 imbalance was associated with donor limitation or sulfide/DNRA risks. • Vertical profiles showed lower-layer carbon release and NO–3-N reduction. • The 1:1 ratio showed greater carbon oxidation and sulfur transformation potential. • Multi-omics suggested associations between carbon–sulfur metabolism and N removal. Plant-derived carbon can sustain heterotrophic denitrification in low carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) constructed wetlands, but how the relative loading of elemental sulfur (S 0 ) and solid carbon regulates mixotrophic nitrogen removal remains unclear. In this study, six surface flow constructed wetlands (SFCWs) amended with different Arundo donax straw/S 0 ratios were operated for 96 days to treat simulated secondary effluent. Under the tested conditions, the 1:1 ratio (450 g/450 g) showed the best performance, with a stable-period total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) removal efficiency of 77.6 ± 5.7 % and a relatively low net SO 4 2– accumulation per unit TIN removed (1.47 mg SO 4 2– /mg N). Insufficient S 0 weakened late-stage NO 3 – -N removal; the excess S 0 configuration showed HS – /S 2– accumulation and was associated with a higher risk of dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium without improving nitrogen removal; and carbon-limited configurations showed insufficient electron donor availability. Vertical profiles showed that carbon release and NO 3 – -N reduction were concentrated in the lower layers. Metagenomic analysis showed that the 1:1 configuration enriched representative functional taxa, including hydrolytic/fermentative bacteria ( Clostridium ), sulfur-transforming bacteria ( Sulfuritalea , Thiobacillus ), and nitrogen reduction-related taxa ( Azonexus ). Functional gene abundances suggested greater potential for anaerobic carbon oxidation and sulfur transformation in the 1:1 configuration. Metabolomic analysis indicated substrate-associated changes in sulfur-related metabolites and in pathways related to nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide and coenzyme A. Network analysis further showed that carbon metabolism and sulfur transformation were closely associated with nitrogen removal performance. These results provide new insights into substrate regulation of mixotrophic denitrification in SFCWs treating low C/N wastewater. Effect of different chemical treatments and loadings of Arundo donax L. fibers on the dynamic mechanical, thermal, and morphological properties of bisphenol A aniline based polybenzoxazine composites

Wissam Bessa,Djalal Trache,Mehdi Derradji,Houda Ambar,Mokhtar Benziane,Bendiba Guedouar

In this research paper, bisphenol A aniline based benzoxazine (BA-a) was reinforced with natural, inexpensive, and largely distributed cellulosic plant, namely Arundo donax L. (AD) at various loadings of 5, 15, and 25 wt%. AD fibers were initially subjected to three different chemical surface modifications using alkaline, silane, and combined alkali-silane solutions. The main purpose of this work was to investigate the dynamic mechanical properties, morphological stability, and thermal stability of the as-prepared composites by pointing out the effects of natural reinforcements treated in different ways at different loadings. Dynamic mechanical analysis of the prepared composites revealed an enhancement in storage modulus ( E ′) and loss modulus ( E ″) to higher values, especially for composites reinforced by alkali- or combined-treated fibers due to the strong effect of alkaline solution to remove noncellulosic matters. Composite loaded at 25% of alkali-silane treated AD exhibited a glass transition temperature ( T g ) of 217°C, while pure polymer had a T g of 188°C. The enhanced properties are a great indicator of the high fiber–matrix adhesion and compatibility. This conclusion is strengthened by scanning electron microscopy images. The thermal stability and degradation of the different biocomposites are also investigated by thermogravimetric analysis, revealing that the nature of the employed chemical treatment affected considerably the thermal behavior and the char yield of the composites.
