Fabrication of ZnO/Au@Cu2O heterojunction towards deeply oxidative photodegradation of organic dyes

Xueqin Yuan,Fei Pei,Xiaolin Luo,Huanting Hu,Huaming Qian,Pin Wen,Kangkang Miao,Sifan Guo,Wei Wang,Guodong Feng

Fabrication of heterojunction is an effective way of improving the photocatalytic performance of semiconductor in the photocatalytic wastewater treatment. ZnO/Au@Cu 2 O heterojunctions were successfully synthesised using Au nanoparticles loaded onto the surface of ZnO nanorods as heterostructural seeds to induce in situ growth of Cu 2 O shells. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electrochemical workstation and UV–vis diffuse reflection spectrograph were employed to analyze the structures, compositions and photoelectric properties of the synthesised photocatalysts. After 45–90 min of the photocatalysis of ZnO/Au@Cu 2 O heterojunctions under simulated sunlight, the degradation efficiencies of methyl orange and rhodamine B could reach 93.0% and 99.6%, respectively, which were much higher than those with mono- and bi-component catalysts. The photocatalytic system with ZnO/Au@Cu 2 O can achieve deep mineralization to decompose organic dye molecules into non-toxic products. The formation of heterostructures not only could expand the spectral absorption range to the visible region but also efficiently facilitate charge separation to transfer more photo-generated holes and electrons to generate oxidative hydroxyl and superoxide radicals. A Z-scheme charge separation mechanism was proposed according to the determination of radical species and energy band structures of ZnO–Cu 2 O.

Facile synthesis of hierarchical flower-like Ag/Cu2O and Au/Cu2O nanostructures and enhanced catalytic performance in electrochemical reduction of CO2

Wang Mengyun,Zhang Shengbo,Li Mei,Han Aiguo,Zhu Xinli,Ge Qingfeng,Han Jinyu,Wang Hua

Novel, hierarchical, flower-like Ag/Cu 2 O and Au/Cu 2 O nanostructures were successfully fabricated and applied as efficient electrocatalysts for the electrochemical reduction of CO 2 . Cu 2 O nanospheres with a uniform size of ∼180 nm were initially synthesized. Thereafter, Cu 2 O was used as a sacrificial template to prepare a series of Ag/Cu2O composites through galvanic replacement. By varying the Ag/Cu atomic ratio, Ag 0.125 /Cu 2 O, having a hierarchical, flower-like nanostructure with intersecting Ag nanoflakes encompassing an inner Cu 2 O sphere, was prepared. The as-prepared Ag x /Cu 2 O samples presented higher Faradaic efficiencies (FE) for CO and relatively suppressed H 2 evolution than the parent Cu 2 O nanospheres due to the combination of Ag with Cu 2 O in the former. Notably, the highest CO evolution rate was achieved with Ag 0.125 /Cu 2 O due to the larger electroactive surface area furnished by the hierarchical structure. The same hierarchical flower-like structure was also obtained for the Au 0.6 /Cu 2 O composite, where the FE CO (10%) was even higher than that of Ag 0.125 /Cu 2 O. Importantly, the results reveal that Ag 0.125 /Cu 2 O and Au 0.6 /Cu 2 O both exhibit remarkably improved stability relative to Cu 2 O. This study presents a facile method of developing hierarchical metal-oxide composites as efficient and stable electrocatalysts for the electrochemical reduction of CO 2 .

Inter-embedded Au-Cu2O heterostructure for the enhanced hydrogen production from water splitting under the visible light

Bo Ma,Jinglei Bi,Jian Lv,Chuncai Kong,Pengxu Yan,Xintian Zhao,Xiaojing Zhang,Tao Yang,Zhimao Yang

Constructing the heterostructure with noble metals on semiconductors is recognized as a prospective approach to enhance hydrogen generation. In this study, Au-Cu 2 O heterostructure particles (HPs) with unique inter-embedded heterostructures were controllably fabricated by a universal reaction between Cu particles and HAuCl 4 solution. Besides, the boosted catalytic performance from the plasmon effects, Au-Cu 2 O inter-embedded heterostructure exhibits additional structural advantages to promote the photocatalytic property of hydrogen generation overall water splitting. Under the visible light, the H 2 evolution rate of the Au-Cu 2 O HPs is 152 and 22 times higher than that of pure Cu 2 O and traditional Cu 2 O@Au HPs with Au anchored on the surface of Cu 2 O, respectively. On one hand, inter-embedded heterostructure brings more contact areas as the active sites to carry out the direct electron transfer and electromagnetic transfer for the reduction. On the other hand, the finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations indicate that enhanced electromagnetic fields of Au-Cu 2 O HPs form a netlike structure to maximumly accelerate the transfer of hot electrons and separate the electron–hole pairs. Under the joint action of the two, the inter-embed heterostructure exhibits superior photocatalytic property, demonstrating that this study could instruct the design of other metal–semiconductor photocatalysts.

Rapid bacterial elimination achieved by sonodynamic Au@Cu2O hybrid nanocubes

Yizhou Zhu,Wanglong Hong,Xiangmei Liu,Lei Tan,Jun Wu,Congyang Mao,Yiming Xiang,Shuilin Wu,Kenneth M. C. Cheung,Kelvin W. K. Yeung

Although efforts have been devoted to develop new antibacterial agents and techniques, the challenge of bacterial infection remains unresolved and is even increasing. Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) driven by ultrasound (US) has demonstrated effectiveness in terms of penetration and it can help to clinically address the problem of deep tissue bacterial infection. In recent years, a variety of sonosensitizers, which were originally designed for photodynamic therapy, have been adopted for SDT. Yet, their unstable chemical stability and ineffective electron–hole separation are not favorable for clinical applications. Hence, we designed a new type of antibacterial sonosensitizer—namely, Au@Cu2O hybrid nanocubes—in which an interfacial Schottky junction was built between a p-type semiconductor Cu2O and a noble metal Au. When US stimulation was applied, the electrons from Cu2O could be excited at the junction and transferred to Au. Since the formed Schottky barrier could block the backflow of US-excited electrons, a prolonged electron–hole separation can be successfully established. Additionally, because of the boosted sonocatalytic activity, the Au@Cu2O hybrid nanocubes could produce a large amount of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are subject to US stimulation. Furthermore, we found that the sonocatalytic activity of the Au@Cu2O hybrid nanocubes could be reinforced by increasing the amount of Au, enabling 99.67% of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) to be killed by US stimulation for 15 minutes. The cytocompatibility of Au@Cu2O hybrid nanocubes was improved by a red blood cell membrane (RBC) coating over the surface, and the membrane did not sacrifice its superior antibacterial properties.

In Situ Single Au@Cu2O Core–Shell Nanoparticle Analysis-Enhanced Ultrasensitive Detection of Biothiols Using Light Scattering Imaging

Qian Lan Li,Da Yong Miao,Zhong Wei Jiang,Kun Lin Huang,Chang Xia,Yi Wang

Dark-field microscopy (DFM) as a single particle analysis (SPA) technique has been developed rapidly in recent years because of its high signal-to-noise ratio, enhanced sensitivity, and sufficient spatial and temporal resolution. Here, an in situ single Au@Cu2O core–shell nanoparticle (Au@Cu2O NP) light scattering imaging analysis was reported to realize the ultrasensitive detection of biothiols–cysteine (Cys) and glutathione (GSH). Based on the specific binding of Cu(I) with –SH to the formation of the Cu–S bond, it triggered the decomposition of the Cu2O shell and exposure of the Au nanorods (Au NRs) in the presence of biothiols. Moreover, the process of Cu2O shell dissolution has been observed in real time under DFM, which indicated that the scattering color changed from bright green to dark red and the scattering intensity decreased, correspondingly. Compared with ex situ SPA, in situ SPA exhibited significantly high sensitivity due to the effect of concentration polarization, which exhibited linear correlations over broad concentration ranges (Cys: 0.05–3 nM, GSH: 0.1–10 nM), with low detection limits of 15.52 pM (Cys) and 75.07 pM (GSH). Therefore, this work provides a smart strategy to find promising applications for the ultrasensitive detection of biomolecules through SPA.

Constructing the Cu2O@Au/Cu2O integrated heterostructure cooperated with LSPR effect for enhanced photocatalytic performance via a three-in-one synergy

Bo Ma,Qian Xu,Huajun Yao,Yalin Chen,Yiyang Wang,Yunfei Yang,Hongfang Shen,Youjun Lu

As a promising strategy, Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) is applied to improve the efficiency of metal–semiconductor photocatalysts. However, current research have focused on maximizing the LSPR effect in a single structure, rather than the simultaneous consideration of the synergy between integrated structural characteristics and LSPR effect. Here we designed an integrated structure of Cu 2 O@Au/Cu 2 O heterostructure particles (HPs), which were provided with both the core–shell heterostructure (Cu 2 O@Au) and the inter-embedded heterostructure (Au/Cu 2 O). Cu 2 O@Au/Cu 2 O HPs showed much enhanced photocatalytic performance than pure Cu 2 O and other heterostructures with single structural characteristics. Experimental characterization and theoretical simulation confirm that the integrated heterostructure follows the three-in-one synergy, which include the LSPR effect of Au nanoparticles, the light scattering based on core–shell heterostructure, and the effective charge separation based on inter-embedded heterostructure. The concept of integrated heterostructure cooperated with LSPR effect provides a new strategy to design future catalysts.

Multienzyme-Mimicking Au@Cu2O with Complete Antioxidant Capacity for Reactive Oxygen Species Scavenging

Junyi Zeng,Caiping Ding,Liang Chen,Bing Yang,Ming Li,Xiaoyuan Wang,Fengmei Su,Chuntai Liu,Youju Huang

Most enzyme catalysts are unable to achieve effective oxidation resistance because of the monotonous mimicking function or production of secondary reactive oxygen species (ROS). Herein, the Au@Cu2O heterostructure with multienzyme-like activities is deigned, which has significantly improved antioxidant capacity compared with pure Cu2O for the scavenging of highly cell-damaging secondary ROS, i.e.,·OH. Experiments and theoretical calculations show that the heterostructure exhibits a built-in electric field and lattice mismatch at the metal–semiconductor interface, which facilitate to generate abundant oxygen vacancies, redox couples, and surface electron deficiency. On the one hand, the presence of rich oxygen vacancies and redox couple can enhance the adsorption and activation of oxygen-containing ROS (including O2·– and H2O2). On the other hand, the electron transfer between the electron-deficient Au@Cu2O surface and electron donor would promote peroxide-like activity and avoid producing ·OH. Importantly, endogenous ·OH could be eliminated in both acidic and neutral conditions, which is no longer limited by the volatile physiological environment. Therefore, Au@Cu2O can simulate superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) to form a complete antioxidant system. The deigned nanoenzyme is explored in the real sample world such as A549 cells and zebrafish. This work provides theoretical and practical strategies for the construction of a complete antioxidant enzyme system.

An electrochemical aptasensor based on catalytic hairpin self-assembly and co-amplification of AuPd/Fe-MOF and Au/Cu2O for ultrasensitive detection of Cd2+

He Jintao,Zhang Baozhong,Tian Panpan,Li Ying,Liu Xiaolong,Ma Xinyue,Lin Min,Zhu Huina,Chen Hanyu,Li Liping,He Baoshan

Cadmium (Cd), a typical heavy metal not essential for the human body, can cause harm to the liver and kidneys upon exposure. Hence, rapid cadmium detection in the environment is of utmost importance. This research presents an effective approach for detecting divalent cadmium ions (Cd 2+ ) using a sensitive dual hairpin (HP) electrochemical aptasensor. The aptasensor incorporates AuPd/Fe-MOF as signal labels and Au/Cu 2 O as the substrate material, and the rapid detection of divalent cadmium ions (Cd 2+ ) was based on catalytic hairpin self-assembly (CHA), as the recognition strategy. Au/Cu 2 O increased the specific surface area of the electrode and provided abundant sites for capturing the complementary deoxyribonucleic acid (CDNA) probe. The electrochemical signal is then amplified through synergistic catalytic hydrogen peroxide with AuPd/Fe-MOF, thereby enhancing the aptasensor's sensitivity. Moreover, the dual HP design effectively reduces the likelihood of non-specific capture and minimizes false positives. In this study, various analytical techniques were utilized to characterize the material and evaluate the aptasensor's performance. The morphological characteristics of the material were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were employed to analyze the elemental composition and distribution of the material, respectively. The electrochemical behavior of the sensor was studied using cyclic voltammetry (CV), while electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) helped understand the aptasensor's assembly process. Furthermore, the aptasensor's performance was assessed using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Under the optimized experimental conditions, the constructed sensor demonstrated effective detection of Cd 2+ in the concentration range of 10 –4 –10 µM, with a remarkably low detection limit of 2.27 × 10 –5  µM. The feasibility of the sensor was validated by successfully detecting Cd 2+ in real water samples. .

Cavity-confined Au@Cu2O yolk-shell nanoreactors enable switchable CH4/C2H4 selectivity

Zhang Zekun,Guo Hua,Li Shiji,Gao Suihan,Wang Xinyu,Li Mingtao,Yan Wei,Xu Hao

The regulation of product selectivity in electrochemical CO 2 reduction (ECO 2 R) remains fundamentally constrained by the dynamic equilibrium between intermediate transport and surface coverage. In this study, we report a progress in catalytic architecture through precision-engineered Au@Cu 2 O yolk-shell tandem nanoreactors featuring dual-tunable parameters: cavity confinement dimensions and shell thickness gradients. This structural modulation enables dynamic control over both *CO intermediate enrichment and reaction pathway bifurcation. ECO 2 R performance evaluations demonstrate significant product selectivity switching at −1.31 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)). The Faradaic efficiency (FE) for CH 4 exhibits significant architectural dependence, increasing from 43.02% (thick-shell/large-cavity) to 65.54% (medium-dimension) and then decreasing to 23.26% (thin-shell/small-cavity). Conversely, the FE for C 2 H 4 demonstrates an inverse structural correlation, improving from 6.68% (medium-dimension) to 38.73% (thin-shell/small-cavity). The spatial domain-limiting mechanism of the yolk-shell structure directly controls the transition between protonation-dominated CH 4 formation and coupling-driven C 2 H 4 production. This work establishes a pioneering paradigm for dynamically steering catalytic selectivity through purely geometrical modulation, bypassing traditional compositional tuning limitations, thereby opening avenues for precision design of advanced electrocatalytic systems.

Dependence of copper(I) stability on long-range electromagnetic effects of Au under reducing atmospheres: the size effect of Au cores

Xin Huang,Haitao Li,Bin Zhang,Yin Zhang,Hao Wang,Lijun Ban,Yixuan Xu,Yongxiang Zhao

It has been widely recognized that adjusting the size of Au particles has emerged as a significant approach in catalyst design, catalyst screening, and comprehension of reaction mechanisms. However, the essential factors of Au nanoparticles used only as an additive to enhance the activity of traditional multicomponent thermocatalysts have not been fully revealed. In this study, a series of Au@Cu2O core–shell nanocatalysts were synthesized through a controllable method, featuring core sizes ranging from 11 to 33 nm and an average shell thickness of approximately 55 nm. It was revealed that the size effect of Au cores plays a very vital role in the stability of the active Cu+ species under reducing atmospheres (H2, acetylene and formaldehyde) as well as the catalytic performance of the catalysts in the ethynylation of formaldehyde. The experimental findings revealed that Au@Cu2O core–shell catalysts with Au core sizes ranging from 11 to 16 nm exhibited a higher abundance of electron-deficient Cu+ species in the shell, which is attributed to the strong long-range electromagnetic effects of the Au core in the absence of photoexcitation or an applied electric field. Additionally, the active Cu+ species demonstrated remarkable stability under reducing atmospheres. Although the stability of Cu+ decreased slightly when the Au core size exceeded 16 nm, the Cu+ content remained above 80%. Notably, the Au@Cu2O catalysts with Au core sizes ranging from 11 to 16 nm exhibited excellent catalytic activity in the ethynylation of formaldehyde.

A study of size-controlled Au@Cu2O nanocomposite for highly improved methyl orange catalytic performances

Dou Yun-Qi,Deng Tian-Song,Zhang Qi,Zhao Xiaoyu,Liu Jia,Cheng Zhiqun

In this study, we synthesized Au-Cu 2 O core–shell nanoparticles (Au@Cu 2 O NPs) with epitaxial Cu 2 O shell, which have highly improved catalytic performances in methyl orange reduction reaction. We have obtained Au@Cu 2 O NPs with different sizes at low temperatures by changing the amount of Cu 2+ precursor. Both Au and Cu 2 O are catalytic materials, especially Cu 2 O, as a p -type semiconductor, whose catalytic ability depends on the crystalline facets. Catalytic reduction of methyl orange (MO) was used as a model system to explore the catalytic properties of Au@Cu 2 O nanocomposite. In comparison to pure Au and Cu 2 O NPs, the catalytic performance of Au@Cu 2 O has a noticeable improvement. The best catalytic rate was ~ 22 times faster than that of AuNRs and ~ 4 times than that of Cu 2 O NPs. By studying the catalytic mechanism, it is supposed that the Schottky barrier at the Au-Cu 2 O interfaces leads to the charge separation, which is beneficial to catalysis. Therefore, the Au@Cu 2 O NPs we designed with controllable shell thickness is an ideal composite material in the catalyst domain.

Bidirectional ROS Modulation for Programmed Anti-Infective and Anti-Inflammatory Therapy With Au-Cu2O/MXene Nanocomposite

Min Zhang,Kami Hu,Liuyuan Zhu,Rui Ding,Ying Hou,Junjie Mou,Haoming Xia,Yihe Lin,Purui Zheng,Lingnv Zhan,Haiping Fang,Hui He,Chunhua Zeng,Yingying Huang,Ruoyang Chen

Chronic bacterial infections pose a therapeutic challenge in eliminating bacteria while suppressing inflammation. Conventional antibiotics are often limited by drug resistance and poor biofilm penetration, contributing to a global health threat of antibiotic misuse. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) modulation offers a promising alternative, yet requires precise balance: insufficient ROS compromises antibacterial efficacy, but excess exacerbates inflammation. Here, we present a bidirectional ROS-regulation strategy for programmed antibacterial and anti-inflammatory therapy using Au-edged cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) nanocubes on MXene (Au-Cu 2 O/MXene). Under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, this nanocomposite induces moderate ROS, eliminating >99% of planktonic bacteria and >97% of mature biofilms. After cessation of NIR irradiation, the nanocomposite itself switches to scavenge the residual excessive ROS in the inflammatory microenvironment, which alleviates oxidative stress. Our skin wound infection model further demonstrates that Au-Cu 2 O/MXene markedly reduces bacterial burden, suppresses inflammatory responses, and accelerates wound closure. Theoretical computations reveal that Au-capping weakens O 2 adsorption through weak O 2p-Au 5d orbital hybridization and hinders photogenerated electron transfer with high work function, suppressing ROS overproduction; it also lowers the free energy barrier for H 2 O/O 2 desorption, promoting ROS decomposition. This work offers an effective antibiotic-free immunomodulation strategy for programmed biofilm eradication, infected wound repair, and inflammation suppression via context-dependent ROS modulation.
