One of the current challenges in nanozyme-based nanotechnology is the utilization of multifunctionalities in one material. In this regard, Au@Pt nanoparticles (NPs) with excellent enzyme-mimicking activities due to the Pt shell and unique surface plasmon resonance features from the Au core have attracted enormous research interest. However, the unique surface plasmon resonance features from the Au core have not been widely utilized. The practical problem of the optical-damping nature of Pt hinders the research into the combination of Au@Pt NPs’ enzyme-mimicking properties with their surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activities. Herein, we rationally tuned the Pt amount to achieve Au@Pt NPs with simultaneous plasmonic and enzyme-mimicking activities. The results showed that Au@Pt NPs with 2.5% Pt produced the highest Raman signal in 2 min, which benefited from the remarkably accelerated catalytic oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine with the decorated Pt and strong electric field retained from the Au core for SERS. This study not only demonstrates the great promise of combining bimetallic nanomaterials’ multiple functionalities but also provides rational guidelines to design high-performance nanozymes for potential biomedical applications.

In this study, core-shell Au@Pt nanoparticles (Au@Pt NPs) with peroxidase catalytic activity were synthesized by the seed-mediated method, and were used to catalyze the reaction of luminol–H2O2 to enhance the chemiluminescence (CL) intensity. It was found that thiocyanate (SCN−) can effectively inhibit the catalytic activity of Au@Pt NPs. Based on this phenomenon, a method to detect SCN− by using the Au@Pt NPs-catalytic luminol–H2O2 CL system was established, which has an ultra-low detection limit and an ultra-wide linear range, as well as the advantages of being simple and having low-cost and convenient operation. The research mechanism indicated that SCN− could be adsorbed on the surface of Au@Pt NPs and occupies the active sites of Pt nanostructures, which led to a decrease in the amount of Pt0 and a loss of the excellent catalytic activity of Au@Pt NPs. After optimizing the experimental conditions, this assay for detecting SCN− exhibited a good linear range from 5 to 180 nM, and the low detection limit was 2.9 nM. In addition, this approach has been successfully applied to the detection of SCN− in tap-water samples, which has practical application value and embodies good development prospects.

Photocatalytic conversion of CO 2 to value-added chemicals and fuels is a green and sustainable approach to solve the problems of CO 2 concentration increment and fossil fuels shortage. Employing photocatalysts with high catalytic activity and selectivity to realize CO 2 conversion has attracted extensive attention. However, the efficiency of photocatalysts is still unsatisfied and the selectivity of products is hard to be regulated, hindering their practical applications in large scale commercial purpose. In this work, for the first time, the Au and Pt was co-deposited on the heterostructure consisted of Cu 2 O quantum dots and ReS 2 nanosheets to achieve high efficiency and controllable selectivity during CO 2 photoreduction. The Au-Pt/Cu 2 O/ReS 2 photocatalysts show superior efficiency of CO 2 reduction than that of Au/Cu 2 O/ReS 2 , Pt/Cu 2 O/ReS 2 , Cu 2 O/ReS 2 , Cu 2 O. Such distinct improvement is attributed to the indirect Z-scheme mechanism and Schottky junction effect. Moreover, the synergetic effect of Au and Pt plays an important role of improving the photocatalytic activity, and the Au1-Pt5/Cu 2 O/ReS 2 exhibits the highest R electron of 516.86 μmol/g during one hour of visible light illumination, which is much larger than many recently reported photocatalysts under comparable condition. Meanwhile, the selectivity of CO and CH 4 is effortlessly tunable from 0 to 100% by modulating Au/Pt metal mass ratio due to the strong CO adsorption on Pt metals and the intensive interaction between Au and Pt atoms at the Au/Pt interface. This controllable selectivity provides admirable strategy to tune the component proportion of the gas products for the subsequent conversion into high value-added chemicals or liquid fuels. Our study proposes novel and deep insights into the design and fabrication of practical photocatalysts with high catalytic activity and controllable selectivity to perform efficient CO 2 photoconversion.

This paper introduces an approach to synthesize bimetallic nanoparticles under an alternating temperature field in aqueous solution. During the synthesis, pyro-catalytic barium titanate is used as the substrate to reduce the metallic ions dispersed in the solution due to the generated charges at the surface of pyro-materials under temperature oscillation. Chloroauric acid and potassium tetrachloroplatinate are used as precursors to produce gold/platinum bimetallic nanoparticles through a pyro-catalytic process. Transmission electron microscopy characterization, in combination with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy mapping, demonstrates that the bimetallic nanoparticle is composed of an Au core and Au/Pt alloy shell structure. Compared to the conventional approaches, the pyroelectric synthesis approach demonstrated in this work requires no toxic reducing agents and waste heat can be used as a thermal energy source in the synthesis. Hence, it offers a potential “green” synthetic method for bimetallic nanoparticles.

It is attractive but remains challenging to develop nanomaterials-based methods to realize the colorimetric detection of ultratrace biological analytes. In this work, an HAuCl 4 -H 2 O 2 system was developed for the visual detection of intracellular hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) based on the Au-Pt/SiO 2 sensing platform. Owing to their excellent intrinsic peroxidase-like activity, Au-Pt/SiO 2 nanospheres were introduced to catalyze the decomposition of H 2 O 2 and then directly reduce HAuCl 4 into gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) for the naked-eye detection. The produced Au NPs behaved color variations from light purple to wine red as H 2 O 2 concentration increased. Under the optimal conditions, this strategy showed excellent sensitivity for H 2 O 2 with a detection limit of 0.1 nM by naked-eye readout and 0.1 pM by UV–vis spectrometer (S/N = 3), as well as acceptable selectivity for H 2 O 2 , which could meet the demand for the detection of H 2 O 2 in biological systems. The method was further validated by the determination of H 2 O 2 in HeLa cells with low cellular cytotoxicity. Thus, this strategy would provide simple and sensitive detection of H 2 O 2 in biological systems, revealing the potential application in clinical, biological and environmental researches.

Three series of catalysts consisting of gold (Au), platinum (Pt), or gold-platinum bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) with controlled sizes (Au NPs 10 ± 2 nm, Pt NPs 6 ± 2 nm) anchored on hierarchical micro-/meso-/macroporous silica were successfully developed and systematically evaluated for the selective oxidation of aromatic alcohols to their corresponding aldehydes. The catalysts were prepared by the sol-immobilization method using as-made Au NPs and/or Pt NPs colloids; the silica supports were prepared with controlled pore structures and the hierarchical porous structures of catalysts were created by controllable desilication via the alkaline solution of the metal colloids. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), and Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), and these results showed no synergistic effect between Au and Pt on boosting the catalytic performance, whereas they demonstrated a clear dependence of catalytic conversions and reaction rates on the structural porosity of Au-Pt bimetallic catalysts. Our findings could potentially inspire peer researchers and scientists to develop designer porous catalysts and processes in the selective organic conversions. Keywords:steric effect;Au-Pt catalysts;alcohol oxidation;hierarchical porous silica

We report the first use of metallic nanozyme as colorimetric probe for Pb 2+ determination. The method is based on the surface leaching of Au@PtNP nanozyme by Pb 2+ -S 2 O 3 2− ions, accompanied by a decreased catalytic activity of the metallic nanozyme. To construct this colorimetric determination, the Pt deposition onto the AuNPs was carefully investigated and other experimental factors including kind of substrate and buffer were optimized. With increasing Pb 2+ concentration, the catalytic activity of the Au@PtNPs decreased gradually. As a result, the blue color at 650 nm from the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine by H 2 O 2 faded gradually. A determination limit of 3.0 nM Pb 2+ with a linear range from 20 to 800 nM was obtained. The assay demonstrated negligible response to common metal ions even at elevated concentrations. This colorimetric method was applied to the determination of Pb 2+ ions spiked in lake water samples, and good recoveries (96.8–105.2%) were obtained. The above results indicate the potential application of metallic nanozymes in developing robust colorimetric assays.

Production of peroxodisulphate (S2O82–) on powdered photocatalysts is a promising way to obtain high-value-added chemicals using solar energy; however, it is still suffering from low efficiency. In the present work, we fabricated bimetallic Au core and Pt shell nanoparticle-loaded WO3 (Au@Pt/WO3) photocatalyst for enhanced production of S2O82–, which is 1.7 times that of Pt nanoparticle-loaded WO3 (Pt/WO3), and was reported to be the best catalyst for S2O82– production. A further study demonstrated that the electronic interaction of Pt was successfully modulated by the core–shell nanoparticle architecture, and the core–shell nanoparticle structure between Au and Pt improved the formation of the surface chemical state of Pt to be metallic Pt, proposed as the active site for oxygen reduction. Besides, the core–shell nanoparticle structure also exposed a large amount of Pt on the surface of the substrate. As a result, Au@Pt/WO3 showed significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity of S2O82– with a quantum efficiency of 5.2% at 420 nm, whereas Pt–Au bimetallic alloy nanoparticle-loaded WO3 with a large amount of surface PtOx and exposed both Au and Pt on the surface showed very low activity. This work provides insights into the bimetallic Pt nanoparticle-loaded WO3 for enhanced photocatalytic activity.

Au–Pt/CaIn2S4 composites were synthesized for the first time using the photoreduction method by which bimetallic Au–Pt alloy nanoparticles were in situ site-selectively photoreduced on the edges of monoclinic CaIn2S4 nanosteps. The Au–Pt alloy nanoparticles as cocatalysts can spatially separate the oxidation and reduction sites and effectively enhance the photocatalytic hydrogen activity of CaIn2S4 under visible light irradiation. When introducing 0.5 wt% Au–Pt alloy nanoparticles, the rate of hydrogen production could reach 107.6 μmol h−1, which was higher than that of CaIn2S4, Au/CaIn2S4 and Pt/CaIn2S4 by a factor of 18.3, 2.37 and 2.4, respectively. The enhanced photocatalytic activity for hydrogen production could be attributed to the low recombination efficiency of the photogenerated charges and surface-plasmon-resonance-induced effect of Au nanoparticles.

The specific structure of the support and the interactions between the catalyst components can lead to electron transfer, which in turn could affect the catalytic performance in heterogeneous catalytic reactions. In this paper, we have successfully prepared MnxOyCz composite materials from the calcination of the Mn-organic framework. Then bimetallic Au–Pt nanoparticles (NPs) were supported onto MnxOyCz via the colloidal-deposition method. These catalysts were tested in the selective oxidation of glycerol to glyceric acid under basic conditions. The results demonstrated that the catalytic activity of the bimetallic Au–Pt/MnxOyCz catalyst is considerably superior to those of the monometallic (Au and Pt) supported catalysts. Under the optimized conditions, 100% of glycerol can convert with 57.3% selectivity of glyceric acid. Multicharacterizations showed that the strong interaction between Au and Pt in the Au–Pt/MnxOyCz catalyst can enhance the dispersion of Au–Pt alloy NPs, promoting the electronic coupling effect on the metal surface. At the same time, the rich oxygen vacancies in this catalyst can facilitate the activation of oxygen, which causes the Au–Pt/MnxOyCz catalyst to show better catalytic activity. Specifically, the interaction between Au and Pt not only decreases the particle size of the Au–Pt alloy NPs but also promotes the reduction of Mn-based oxides and the mobility of oxygen. The absence of Au leads to a decrease in Pt 4f7/2 binding energy, resulting in an enrichment of electrons at the Pt active site and enhancing the oxidation ability of the primary hydroxyl group. In addition, the Au–Pt/MnxOyCz catalyst showed excellent stability without substantial loss of activity after being recycled five times. The insights and methodology may provide some new guidance for the reasonable design of bimetallic catalysts for the catalytic oxidation of biopolyols under mild conditions.

In this study, peroxidase-mimicking core–shell Au@Pt nanoparticles (Au@Pt NPs) were synthesized, and both Hg2+ and Ag+ were found to intensively inhibit the catalytic activity of the Au@Pt NPs. The interactions between the two metal ions and Au@Pt NPs were analyzed through characterization by TEM, DLS, EPR and XPS, etc. Based on the inhibition of both Hg2+ and Ag+ toward the catalytic activity of the Au@Pt NPs and the shielding of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) toward interfering metal ions, a highly sensitive and selective colorimetric assay for Hg2+ and Ag+ was developed. In addition, L-cysteine can be used to mask Hg2+ in the presence of Ag+; therefore, a specific detection of Ag+ ions can be accomplished by this Au@Pt NP-based assay. The limits of detection (LODs) for Hg2+ and Ag+ are 3.5 nM and 2.0 nM, respectively. The linear ranges for detecting Hg2+ and Ag+ are from 10 nM to 200 nM and from 5.0 nM to 100 nM, respectively. Moreover, the colorimetric assay is highly selective toward Hg2+ and Ag+ over other common metal ions. This work demonstrates that the optimization of metal nanoparticle preparation and surface modification play very important roles in developing metal ion sensing based on metal NP enzyme mimics. In addition, the metallic nanozyme based colorimetric method here demonstrates advantages in practical applications as it is low-cost, simple, and highly sensitive and selective, although it needs a two-step reaction.

Cr(VI) is one of the most typical heavy metal contaminants and rapid detection of Cr(VI) is highly important in food control and public health. Herein, a core–shell Au@Pt nanozyme-based colorimetric assay was developed for the rapid and sensitive detection of Cr(VI). The monodispersed Au@Pt core–shell nanoparticles exhibited high peroxidase-mimicking activity and can catalyze colorless TMB into blue-colored oxidized oxTMB. After the addition of Cr(VI), the oxTMB molecules can be reduced into colorless TMB. The ultrathin Pt shell can prevent the Pt component from aggregation, thus improving the catalytic activity of Au@Pt nanozyme. These Au@Pt nanozyme-based Cr(VI) assays exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity and displayed satisfactory recoveries in practical samples. Our work highlights opportunities for the development of core–shell nanozymes with extensive applications in food safety, biomedicine, and environmental monitoring.
