P-Type AsP Nanosheet as an Electron Donor for Stable Solar Broad-Spectrum Hydrogen Evolution

Cheng Lin,Lianfu Jiang,Dawei Hu,Yiqun Li,Bo Cai,Jing Li,Yu Gu,Luyang Wang,Kan Zhang,Haibo Zeng

Although research progress on mimicking natural photosynthesis for solar-to-fuel conversion has been continuously made, exploring broadband spectral-responsive materials with suitable band positions and high stability still remains a huge challenge. Herein, we, for the first time, report novel AsP nanosheets (NSs) with P-type semiconducting property and enough negative conduction band, which can work as a stable near-infrared (NIR) region-responsive electron donor for water reductive hydrogen (H2) production. To mimic photosystem I, Au nanorods (NRs) act as electron transport media, which are also responsible for the enhanced electric field nearby, and 1T-MoS2 NSs as a hydrogen evolution catalyst are orderly coupled with AsP NSs with a sheet-rod-sheet structure by electrostatic self-assembly. The cascaded band level alignment enables unidirectional electron flow from AsP to Au and then to MoS2, and the optimum H2 production rate of the MoS2-Au-AsP ternary heterojunction reaches 125.52 μmol g–1 h–1 with good stability even after being stored for several months under light irradiation with a wavelength longer than 700 nm. This work provides a platform that is energetically tailored to drive a solar broad-spectrum fuel generation, including CO2 reduction and N2 fixation.

Hydrophobic expanded graphite-covered support to construct flexible and stable SERS substrate for sensitive determination by paste-sampling from irregular surfaces

Borong Yu,Yue Mao,Jiangli Li,Jiaosuo Wang,Binbin Zhou,Pan Li,Yuanyuan Ma,Zhangang Han

Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a promising technique for trace determination. More and more attention is focused on hybrid SERS substrates, which coupled with noble metal nanoparticles and carbon-based materials. Herein, expanded graphite (EG) is used to prepare EG-covered support by ultrasonic washing and filtration. Such support is flexible and can be cut into any shape. And the contact angle ( θe ) for Au nanorods (Au NRs) sol on the EG-covered support was 108.2° and the hydrophobic surface is helpful for Au NRs to construct ‘hot spots’ during evaporation. The limits of detection (LOD) for crystal violet (CV), thiram, malachite green (MG) and methylene blue (MB) were as low as 1 ppb, 50 ppb, 1 ppb and 1 ppb, respectively. Moreover, a fast and convenient ‘paste-sampling’ method could be employed for trace contaminants on real samples, because EG-based Au NRs substrate is of flexibility and porosity. Thus, CV residue on shrimp could be determined lower than 1 ppb and thiram residue on grapes could be identified lower than 50 ppb. In addition to high sensitivity, the stability of EG-based Au NRs substrate is also very good. Even after acid/alkali pretreatment (pH = 4∼10) or 30 min of thermal treatment (T = 20∼100 °C), the enhancement of the substrate remained stable. What’s more, the substrate could be stored as long as 30 days. The highly stable, sensitive, cost-effective and easy-to-produce EG-based Au NRs substrates exhibit a great potential to promote application of SERS for routine analysis.

Photochemical synthesis of ZnO@Au nanorods as an advanced reusable SERS substrate for ultrasensitive detection of light-resistant organic pollutant in wastewater

Linlin Xu,Hua Zhang,Yue Tian,Anxin Jiao,Feng Chen,Ming Chen

The prospect of wielding surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) as a powerful technique for ultrasensitive detection of organic molecules in wastewater has received extensive attention in environmental surveillance. Based on ultraviolet (UV, 405 nm) laser irradiation of ZnO nanorods in HAuCl 4 solution, ZnO@Au nanorods with controllable Au nanoparticles were successfully fabricated and established as an advanced SERS-based substrate. The reduction of Au ions was driven by the generation of electron-hole pairs via UV laser excitation of semiconductor-based nanomaterials , resulting in the moderate overgrowth of Au nanoparticles on the ZnO nanorods. The Au composition-dependent SERS analysis of crystal violet (CV) molecules revealed that the ZnO@Au nanorods with 16.21% Au contents exhibited optimized SERS activity in comparison with other nano-substrates in this paper. Furthermore, the detection limit of light-resistant methyl blue (MB) dye molecules was achieved at nanomole (nM) level of 10 −9 M (0.8 μg/L), providing ultrasensitive detection of organic pollution in wastewater. Even after twenty recycles, the excellent reusability of this novel substrate with 65% original SERS intensity was achieved by subsequently eliminating the residual MB molecules via photocatalytic degradation. Therefore, the as-prepared ZnO@Au nanorods can serve as a cost-effective, clean, reusable and active SERS substrate for ultrasensitive monitoring of light-resistant organic pollutant in natural ecosystems.

Deposition of Pd–Pt alloy zigzag shell over Au nanorods for boosted catalysis and thermo-photo catalysis

Dou Yun-Qi,Zhang Qi,Deng Tian-Song,Cheng Zhiqun,Zhao Xiaoyu

Multimetallic plasmonic nanostructures, with appropriate morphology, elemental proportions and sizes, can be used to accelerate photocatalytic reactions. Here, we designed zigzag trimetallic nanostructures with the Au core and Pd–Pt alloy shell, whose catalytic ability was boosted by the synergistic effect of the plasmonic metal and catalytic metal. The catalytic rate of Au@PdPt nanoparticle (NP) with no light have a significant improvement, attributed to the larger contact area provided by the zigzag alloy shell. Furthermore, the enhanced catalytic activity in the presence of light is primarily due to the thermo-photo catalytic effect of plasmonic Au. The adding ratios of Pd:Pt were adjusted from 1:4 to 4:1, and we found that, when adding the Pd:Pt of 1:1, the zigzag Au@PdPt nanoparticle (NP) exhibited a superior reaction rate in the reduction methylene blue (MB) under light illumination. The rate is 8 times higher than that of Au@Pt, and the reduction conversion reached 100%. And it has a favorable plasmon enhancement factor with an appropriate shell thickness and get the balance between the catalytic performance and economic effects. This structure driven by capability-oriented design principles and holds the potential for applications in the field of catalysis. Graphical abstract

Plasmon driven super-high HER activity of electronic structure and lattice strain engineered single atomic layer Pd@Au nanorods

Yi-Bai Sun,Miao Ni,Chen Chi,Dong-Rui Yang,Xue-Lu Chen,Qi Qi,Jian Li,Xing-Hua Xia

The development of efficient catalysts with low energy consumption has always been a key issue for sustainable hydrogen energy. Here, we report a catalyst comprising a single atomic Pd layer deposited on Au nanorods (ML-Pd@Au NRs) that shows a super-high HER activity and ultra-low overpotential under localized surface plasmon resonance condition. The Au NR plays triple determining roles in HER performance via adjusting the electronic structure and lattice strain of Pd that effectively reduces the adsorption energy of H-adatoms, eliminating the penetration of H adatoms in multilayer Pd crystal that decreases the H adatoms diffusion kinetics, and providing high energetic hot charge carriers under near-IR light irradiation that decreases the activation energy and onset potential of HER. The single atomic Pd layer on Au NRs ensures the hot electron transfer as the main dissipation pathway of the plasmonic hot charge carriers for HER. Thus, under near-IR light irradiation, HER on ML-Pd@Au NRs occurs with a high mass activity of 17.47 mA mg −1 at 100 mV and a very low overpotential of 13 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , which are superior to the commercial Pd/C and commercial Pt/C catalysts under the same conditions.
