Effects of propylamine and ethylenediamine intercalation of α-ZrP on the corrosion resistance and tribological properties of electroless Ni-B coatings

Liping Yan,Siming Yan,Yi He,Yi Fan,Xinyu Cheng,Huilian Zhou,Jiamin Zhong,Zhiyuan Li,Jinxue Song,Hongjie Li

In this study, propylamine and ethylenediamine intercalated α-ZrP nanocomposites (denoted by P-α-ZrP and E-α-ZrP, respectively) were synthesized. The effects of propylamine and ethylenediamine intercalated α-ZrP nanocomposites and their reinforcements on the corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of Ni-B coatings were investigated and compared. The morphology and structure of the three composites were characterized using transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and particle size analysis. Both propylamine and ethylenediamine intercalation increase the layer spacing of α-ZrP, but do not change the lamellar structure of α-ZrP. The EIS test results show that both Ni-B/P-α-ZrP and Ni-B/E-α-ZrP composite coatings have significantly lower corrosion rates than Ni-B and Ni-B/α-ZrP composite coatings. Compared to Ni-B/α-ZrP, the corrosion rates are reduced by 32 % and 76 % respectively. The R ct values for Ni-B/P-α-ZrP and Ni-B/E-α-ZrP composite coatings are also distinctly higher than Ni-B/α-ZrP, with Ni-B/E-α-ZrP having the highest values. In addition, Ni-B/P-α-ZrP and Ni-B/E-α-ZrP composite coatings are both harder than Ni-B/α-ZrP and have lower average coefficients of friction and wear rates than Ni-B/α-aZrP. Among them, the Ni-B/E-α-ZrP composite coating has the highest microhardness (1163.64 ± 21.20 HV) and the best wear resistance. The wear rate is reduced by 87 % and 65 % compared to Ni-B and Ni-B/α-ZrP composite coatings respectively. In conclusion, both P-α-ZrP and E-α-ZrP are better than α-ZrP in terms of enhancement, with E-α-ZrP being the best.

The Effect of B Coating in Enhancing Properties of Al/Diamond Composites

Jiaxiong Li,Muqing Hou,Haiyuan Chen,Huan Yu,Jixue Zhou,Jianhua Wu,Xitao Wang

Al/diamond composites are considered a new generation of potential thermal management materials. In this study, the uniform B coating on the surface of diamond particles was prepared by the vacuum thermal diffusion method. Subsequently, Al matrix composites reinforced with B-coated diamond particles were produced by the gas pressure infiltration method. The plating time was varied from 0 to 120 min to investigate the effect of B coating on the thermal conductivity and thermal expansion of the Al/B-diamond composites. The thermal conductivity for the Al/B-diamond composites increased from 422 W/m·K to 562 W/m·K with prolonged plating time from 0 to 90 min. Correspondingly, the coefficient of thermal expansion was tailored from 7.0 × 10−6/K to 5.8 × 10−6/K. The enhanced thermal conductivity and decreased coefficient of thermal expansion were attributed to strong interfacial bonding in Al/B-diamond composites. The results indicate that the appropriate thickness of B coating is a viable method to improve interfacial bonding between the Al matrix and B-coated diamond particles.

Enhancement of the Wear Resistance and Corrosion Resistance of Electroplated Ni–W–B Coatings Using PDA-Functionalized VC

Xianmin Gong,Yi He,Liping Yan,Huilian Zhou,Yiling He,Kaijun Wei,Quangang Chen,Shijun Xu

In this study, vanadium carbide (VC) was used as the raw material to synthesize PDA-functionalized VC (P-VC). VC and P-VC were added as nanoreinforced materials to the Ni–W–B coating. The effects of the two nanomaterials on the morphology, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance of the Ni–W–B coatings were investigated and compared. The experimental results show that the surface of the Ni–W–B/P-VC coating is denser and more uniform than that of the Ni–W–B and Ni–W–B/VC coatings, and there are no obvious defects on the surface. According to the hardness test, the Ni–W–B/P-VC coating reaches the highest microhardness of 887.1 HV. According to the friction and wear tests, the Ni–W–B/P-VC coating has the shallowest scratches, the lowest average friction coefficient (COF = 0.274), and the lowest wear rate (9.578 × 10–8 mm2/N). The corrosion resistance is the best, the corrosion rate is 0.0456 mm/y, and the impedance value Rt reaches 14,501 Ω·cm2.

Novel electrocatalyst of nickel sulfide boron coating for hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline solution

Yihui Wu,Ying Gao,Hanwei He,Ping Zhang

Seeking cost-effective and highly active non-precious hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts is still strongly desired in water splitting. In this work, a low-cost and highly efficient HER electrocatalysts of amorphous Ni–S–B coating on nickel mesh is successfully synthesized by means of a simple current-density electrodeposition . The obtained Ni–S–B coating shows superior HER electrocatalytic activity as evidenced by low onset overpotential of 27 mV and 240 mV to drive 10 mA·cm −2 under alkaline conditions. Such high hydrogen evolution activity for Ni–S–B coating can be mainly attributed to the larger surface area (more exposed active sites), faster electron transport between electrode-catalyst-electrolyte interfaces, and nickel mesh substrate. Therefore, Ni–S–B coating can be applied as an efficient HER electrocatalyst to use in alkaline water electrolyzers.
