The electrochemical abatement of aspirin, a representative anti-inflammatory drug, is carried out through anodic oxidation by employing PbO 2 , boron-doped diamond (BDD) and porous Ti/BDD as anodes. The effect of nature characteristic and structure of the electrode material on the electrochemical oxidation is systematic investigated. The redox behavior of aspirin on different electrodes is studied by linear sweep voltammetry. Completely mineralization of aspirin could be achieved on BDD electrodes. The results show that the electrochemical incineration of aspirin on three electrodes follows a pseudo first-order kinetics behavior with apparent rate constant of 0.051, 0.185 and 0.367 h −1 for PbO 2 , flat BDD and porous BDD electrode. Electrochemical degradation mechanism on BDD electrodes involves the direct and indirect electrochemical oxidation while there is only indirect oxidation for aspirin on PbO 2 electrode. Porous Ti/BDD presents the best excellent electrochemical oxidation ability for aspirin compared with flat BDD and PbO 2 electrode. The discrepancy of electrochemical oxidation could be explained in terms of in situ generation and utilization rate of hydroxyl radicals on the surface of electrode materials.

BDD/SnO 2 -F electrode was synthesized by spin-coating and heat treatment, and it was characterized by scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). Electrochemical oxidation of chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate (F-53B, ClCF 2 CF 2 CF 2 CF 2 CF 2 CF 2 -O-CF 2 CF 2 -SO 3 K) as PFOS substitute was carried out with the BDD, BDD/SnO 2 , BDD/PbO 2 , and BDD/SnO 2 -F anodes. The effects of F and Sn ratio, current density, initial pH, initial F-53B concentration, the supporting electrolyte, NaCl concentration, and electrode distance on the degradation ratios were investigated. The defluorination and the desulfurization were evaluated by ion chromatography and UV–vis spectra. The intermediate products were analyzed on the liquid chromatography system coupled with a triple-stage quadrupole mass spectrometer (LC-MS/MS). The experimental results showed that BDD/SnO 2 -F had the most outstanding electrochemical oxidation performance. After introduction of F into SnO 2 crystal, the grain size of SnO 2 -F was reduced, the oxygen evolution potential was increased by 0.13 V, and the degradation ratio of F-53B was increased by 15.07%. Under the optimum operating parameters, F-53B removal ratio of 95.6% was obtained, and the defluorination ratio reached 61.39% with NaCl supporting electrolyte concentration of 1 mol/L at current density of 30 mA/cm 2 after electrolysis of 30 min. Finally, the electrochemical degradation pathways and the mechanisms of F-53B were proposed based on the intermediate products and the previous literature reported. This study indicates that the electrochemical performance of BDD anode can be much improved by modification with SnO 2 -F, and BDD/SnO 2 -F anode is kind of effective anode to decompose refractory compounds.

A novel integrated process was proposed for reductive desulfurization of diesel fuel, in which the reductant sodium borohydride (NaBH4) was in situ generated via sodium metaborate (NaBO2) electroreduction. In order to improve the conversion rate of BO2– into BH4–, NaBO2 electroreduction was fulfilled by applying pulse voltage and using a boron-doped diamond (BDD) thin film electrode. The NaBO2 electroreduction process was analyzed by cyclic voltammetry and 11boron nuclear magnetic resonance (11B NMR) and the factors that influenced desulfurization efficiency were investigated. Under the optimal conditions desulfurization efficiency reached more than 93% for model diesel fuel. The components of model diesel fuel after desulfurization were analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and the electrolyte and digestion solution of precipitate were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma (ICP). Results indicated that B recycle was realized at the same time as desulfurization. Finally, the desulfurization of real diesel fuel was investigated. This work showed that the integrated process may be a new option for desulfurization of diesel fuel due to its mild conditions.

This study compares the electrochemical oxidation of acid orange 74 (AO 74), a typical metal complex azo dye, on four anode materials (Ru, IrO 2 , PbO 2 , and boron doped diamond (BDD)). The results show that the BDD electrode was quite efficient in the anodic oxidation of AO 74 with a 100% removal of AO 74 and an 84.3% removal of COD. Analyzing the active species at different electrodes, we reported that oxidation on an inert electrode primarily depends on direct oxidation and indirect oxidation of active radicals ( OH and O 2 − for the BDD anode and OH for the PbO 2 anode), whereas active electrodes (Ru and IrO 2 ) primarily depend on direct oxidation. The UV–vis spectrum demonstrated that Cr 3+ could be oxidized only on the BDD anode, proving that the BDD electrode has the highest oxidation potential. Similar organic intermediates species were observed on different electrodes by GC–MS. Furthermore, the different organic products are attributed to the difference in the oxidation ability of the electrodes. From the UV–vis spectrum and GC–MS analysis, we speculate that AO 74 was first degraded to aromatic compounds and pyrazole because of the cleavage of the azo-bond. Then it formed amides and organic acid because of the cleavage of the benzene ring, and finally CO 2 and H 2 O were formed.

To quantitatively convert biomass into value-added chemicals or biofuels is still a great challenge. Herein, we develop an efficient electrochemical method to convert the biomass-derived valeric acid into ethers (butyl methyl ether and butyraldehyde dimethyl acetal) or esters (methyl valerate) on boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode in methanol solution. The products distribution was well controlled by tuning the supporting electrolyte and the KOH amount. 98.7% selectivity and ca. 58% Faraday efficiency for ethers and 96% selectivity for esters were achieved by optimizing the supporting electrolytes, initial molar ratio of VA to KOH, VA feed concentration and anodic potential. Strong alkali as supporting electrolyte, high VA feed concentration and initial VA/KOH=1 (mol/mol) favoured the formation of ether products. Fatty acid methyl esters were high-selectively (>96%) produced by using NaClO 4 as the supporting electrolyte and/or adding excessive KOH (initial KOH/VA ratio beyond 2:1). Moreover, partially replacing methanol with ethanol, only one new diether (1,1-diethoxybutane) was formed. A rational mechanism of synthetic butyraldehyde dimethyl acetal via electrocatalytic decarboxylation, rearrangement of carbenium ion, Aldol reaction on BDD in alcohols solution was developed. This strategy may provide a new direction for renewable chemicals and fuels from biomass.
