In this research, a bimetallic compound of silver-modified nano zero-valent iron (Ag/Fe0) was synthesized and utilized to degrade pentabromophenyl ether (BDE209) under various environmental conditions with the presence of citric acid (CA). Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis revealed twelve intermediate products formed during the degradation of BDE209. Both the Fe0–CA system and 0.2% Ag/Fe0–CA system showcased a degradation efficiency of 68.7% and 72.7% respectively in a liquid solution after 24 hours of treatment, along with a 9.1% and 18.2% total organic carbon (TOC) removal. Amid soil conditions, degradation rates reached 66.4%, 54.1%, and 50.5% respectively for initial BDE concentrations of 5 ppm, 10 ppm and 15 ppm in the presence of a degradation system comprising 30 g kg−1 Ag/Fe0 and sodium citrate/CA (NaCA/CA) over 45 days. The potential environmental impacts of this process were assessed using ryegrass as a phytotoxicity marker in soil, wherein the measured chlorophyll and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents indicated that the addition of Ag/Fe0 successfully mitigated stress damage caused by BDE209. Furthermore, Ag/Fe0 has the capability to permeate the cell wall of ryegrass roots and establish interconnections. STEM-EDS patterns revealed that Ag was more readily accumulated inside of the cells compared to Fe. In conclusion, this study introduces an innovative approach for the safe and efficient oxidative degradation of BDE209 under both aquatic and terrestrial environmental conditions.

As a promising in situ remediation technology, nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) can remove polybrominated diphenyl ethers such as decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE209) effectively, However its use is limited by its high production cost. Using steel pickling waste liquor as a raw material to prepare nanoscale zero-valent metal (nZVM) can overcome this deficiency. It has been shown that humic acid and metal ions have the greatest influence on remediation. The results showed that nZVM and nZVI both can effectively remove BDE209 with little difference in their removal efficiencies, and humic acid inhibited the removal efficiency, whereas metal ions promoted it. The promoting effects followed the order Ni 2+ >Cu 2+ >Co 2+ and the cumulative effect of the two factors was a combination of the promoting and inhibitory individual effects. The major difference between nZVM and nZVI lies in their crystal form, as nZVI was found to be amorphous while that of nZVM was crystal. However, it was found that both nZVM and nZVI removed BDE209 with similar removal efficiencies. The effects and cumulative effects of humic acid and metal ions on nZVM and nZVI were very similar in terms of the efficiency of the BDE209 removal.

The agglomeration of nanoparticles reduces the surface area and reactivity of nano zero-valent iron (NZVI). In this paper, highly dispersive and reactive NZVI immobilized in mesoporous silica microspheres covered with FeOOH was synthesized to form reactive mesoporous silica microspheres (SiO 2 @FeOOH@Fe). The characteristics of SiO 2 @FeOOH@Fe were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy simultaneous thermal analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Brunnaer–Emmett–Teller surface area analysis. The mean particle size of the reactive mesoporous silica microspheres was 450 nm, and its specific surface area was 383.477 m 2 g −1 . The degradation of dcabromodiphenyl ether (BDE209) was followed pseudo-first-order kinetics, and the observed reaction rate constant could be improved by increasing the SiO 2 @FeOOH@Fe dosage and by decreasing the initial BDE209 concentration. The stability and longevity of the immobilized Fe nanoparticles were evaluated by repeatedly renewing the BDE209 solution in the reactor. The stable degradation of BDE209 by SiO 2 @FeOOH@Fe was observed within 10 cycles. Agglomeration-resistance and magnetic separation of SiO 2 @FeOOH@Fe were also performed. The improved dispersion of SiO 2 @FeOOH@Fe in solution after one-month storage and its good performance in magnetic separation indicated that SiO 2 @FeOOH@Fe has the potential to be efficiently applied to environmental remediation.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers have been identified as a new class of organic pollutants with ecological risk due to their toxicity, bioaccumulation, and global distribution. Proper remediation technologies are needed to remove them from the environment. In this paper, Ni/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles were synthesized by chemical deposition and used to degrade decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE209). The characteristics of Ni/Fe nanoparticles were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Brunnaer–Emmett–Teller surface area analysis. Ni/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles with diameters in the order of 20–50 nm could effectively degrade BDE209 in the solvent (tetrahydrofuran/water). Influence factors, such as Ni/Fe nanoparticle dosage, initial BDE209 concentration, and Ni loading, on the removal of BDE209 were studied. The results indicated that the degradation of BDE209 followed pseudo-first-order kinetics, and the degradation rate of BDE209 increased with increasing the amount of nano Ni/Fe particles, Ni/Fe ratio, and decreasing the initial concentration of BDE209. Through analyzed the mass balance of the BDE209 removal, degradation was the main process of BDE209 removal. The mechanism of debromination was deduced by analyzing the reaction products using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, the bromide ion in the solution and varying the solvent conditions. Stepwise hydrogen reduction is the main process of debromination, and the hydrion play an important role in the reaction. Moreover, the experiment of long term performance and leaching of Ni were also carried out to test the stability and durability of Ni/Fe nanoparticles in BDE209 degradation.

Some problems exist in the current remediation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) from aqueous solution by using iron-based nanoparticles. Our efforts have contributed to the synthesis of biochar-supported Ni/Fe bimetallic nanoparticle composites (BC@Ni/Fe). Under the optimum operating parameters of BC@Ni/Fe, the morphologic analysis revealed that biochar effectively solved the agglomeration of Ni/Fe nanoparticles and the removal efficiency of BDE209 obtained by BC@Ni/Fe (91.29%) was seven times higher than the sum of biochar (2.55%) and Ni/Fe (11.22%) in 10 min. The degradation products of BDE209 in the solution and absorbed on the BC@Ni/Fe were analyzed with gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy, which indicated that the degradation of BDE209 was mainly a process of stepwise debromination. Meanwhile, compared with Ni/Fe nanoparticles, the adsorption ability of the by-products of BDE209 by BC@Ni/Fe was greater, to a certain extent, which reduced the additional environmental burden. In addition, the concentration of nickle ion leaching from the Ni/Fe nanoparticles was 3.09 mg/L; conversely, the concentration of nickle leaching from BC@Ni/Fe was not detected. This excellent performance in our study indicates a possible means to enhance the reactivity and reduce the secondary risks of Ni/Fe nanoparticles.

Decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE209) has been widely used because of its excellent flame-retardant properties and ability. On the one hand, many studies have shown that the presence of BDE209 can potentially threaten human health and the environment. The production and processing of products containing BDE209 is prohibited except for special applications in China. On the other hand, the study of BDE209 on respiratory cells is not yet fully understood. Consequently, this study aims to investigate the mechanisms of toxic damage and oxidative stress induced by BDE209 exposure in lung epithelial Beas-2B cells. The proliferation of Beas-2B cells under BDE209 exposure was first analyzed by using a real-time label-free cell analyzer (RTCA). Then the cells’ morphological changes were observed using laser confocal microscopy. Subsequently, the effects of BDE209 exposure alone, combined exposure to N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and BDE209, on reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and antioxidant defense-related factors in Beas-2B cells were analyzed separately. The results show that BDE209 exposure induces the proliferation of Beas-2B cells with a dose-dependent increase in inhibition. Microscopic observation of Beas-2B cells reveals significant damage and death. The levels of ROS are significantly increased ( p < 0.01), the contents of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) are increased, the contents of catalase (CAT) are decreased, and the activities of glutathione peroxidase (GPX) are first decreased and then increased. However, under the co-exposure of NAC and BDE209, ROS levels are significantly reduced ( p < 0.01), MDA contents decrease, and SOD activities increase. In summary, BDE209 exposure leads to inhibition of Beas-2B cell proliferation, cellular morphology damage, increased ROS levels, and disturbances in antioxidant defense-related factors. The cells showed toxic damage and oxidative stress. In contrast, NAC can suppress ROS levels, enhance SOD activity, and inhibit GPX activity, thereby alleviating BDE209-induced cellular damage.

In this paper, the hepatocytotoxicity and aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) activity of decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE209) and other 18 analogues were evaluated in vitro using human normal liver cell L02. These dioxin-like compounds showed differential hepatocytotoxicity (EC 50 = 0.38–17.87 mg/L) and AHR activity (EROD activity = 4.53–46.35 U/μg). In silico study indicated the distance of π-π bonds between the benzene ring of compounds and residue Phe234 of AHR played a key role in the binding of AHR, and the substituents on the benzene ring also influenced the activity. Combining molecular biology and bioomics, the comprehensive investigations on the hepatotoxic mechanisms have demonstrated the AHR signaling pathway was the key mediation mechanism for the hepatotoxicity of DBDPE/BDE209. The cytochrome P450s (CYP2 family) mediated formation of reactive oxygenated intermediates might be the dominant toxic mechanism, which could produce oxidative stress or cause genotoxicity. Although the experimental toxicity of DBDPE was smaller relative to BDE209, the health risk of DBDPE may be much greater than we expected, due to the high potential to form a variety of dioxin-like intermediates by microbial oxidation of ethyl group. Therefore, whether it is really safe to replace BDE209 with DBDPE is a debatable question, and more ecotoxicological and health data are needed to clarify this issue.
