Combining a layer construction strategy with cocrystallization techniques, we designed and prepared a structurally unusual 1H,1′H-5,5′-bistetrazole-1,1′-diolate (BTO) based energetic cocrystal, which we also confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and powder-crystal X-ray diffraction. The obtained cocrystal crystallizes in a triclinic system, P-1 space group, with a density of 1.72 g cm−3. The properties including the thermal stability, sensitivity and detonation performance of the cocrystal were analyzed in detail. In addition, the thermal decomposition behavior of the cocrystal was studied by differential calorimetry and thermogravimetry tandem infrared spectroscopy. The results indicated that the cocrystal exhibits strong resistance to thermal decomposition up to 535.6 K. The cocrystal also demonstrates a sensitivity of >50 J. Moreover, its formation enthalpy was estimated to be 2312.0 kJ mol−1, whereas its detonation velocity and detonation pressure were predicted to be 8.213 km s−1 and 29.1 GPa, respectively, by applying K–J equations. Therefore, as expected, the obtained cocrystal shows a good comprehensive performance, which proves that a high degree of layer-by-layer stacking is essential for the structural density, thermal stability and sensitivity.

Piezoelectricity is reported to be able to promote bone scaffolds with excellent osteogenic performance. Herein, barium titanate/β-tricalcium phosphate (BTO/β-TCP) piezoelectric composite scaffolds were 3D printed, and their osteogenic performances were investigated in detail. The fabrication of BTO/β-TCP piezoelectric composite scaffolds employed cutting-edge DLP 3D printing technology. The scaffolds, featuring a triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) design with a porosity of 60%, offered a unique structural framework. A comprehensive assessment of the composition, piezoelectric properties, and mechanical characteristics of the BTO/β-TCP scaffolds was conducted. Notably, an increase in the BTO volume fraction from 50 to 80 vol % within the scaffolds led to a reduction in compressive strength, decreasing from 2.47 to 1.74 MPa. However, this variation was accompanied by a substantial enhancement in the piezoelectric constant d33, soaring from 1.4 pC/N to 21.6 pC/N. Utilizing mouse osteoblasts (MC3T3-E1) in a live/dead cell staining assay, under the influence of external ultrasound, demonstrated the commendable biocompatibility of these piezoelectric composite ceramic bone scaffolds. Furthermore, thorough analyses of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) findings provided compelling evidence of the scaffolds’ superior osteogenic properties, underpinning their effectiveness at the cellular protein and gene levels. In conclusion, this study offers a groundbreaking strategy for the employment of BTO/β-TCP piezoelectric composite scaffolds in bone implant applications, harnessing their unique blend of biocompatibility, piezoelectricity, and osteogenic potential.

As flexible and wearable electronics play more and more important role in smart watches, smart glass and virtual reality, and the power supply to the wearable electronics have been revealed more attentions for long-term usage and continuous healthy monitoring. To overcome the challenge, flexible self-powered BTO-PVDF/PDMS piezoelectric-triboelectric electric hybrid generators (BPP-HNG) are developed to human gesture monitoring and human machine interaction (HMI) application without external power supply. BPP-HNG based on BTO-PVDF and PDMS films are prepared by sol–gel and spin-coating method. When the BTO content is 20 wt.%, BPP-HNG exhibits better electrical performance with an output voltage of 20.51 V. A real-time gesture monitoring system is designed and developed to human machine interaction, which is able to control the motion of robot finger through BPP-HNG. BPP-HNG could monitor and recognize various gestures in real time, enabling synchronization between the human hand and the robot’s hand. With the convergence of AI technology and big data, BPP-HNG based HMI technology is expected to realize the potential of smarter and more intuitive interactions.

Dielectrics of the polymer-matrix composite are considered to present combined advantages from both the polymer matrix and inorganic fillers. However, the breakdown strength, as well as energy density, is not effectively enhanced due to the poor compatibility between the organic and inorganic components. Herein, polymer composites derived from polystyrene (PS) and barium titanate (BTO) are proposed and beneficial interface modification by poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride) (PS-co-mah) is conducted to improve compatibility between the inorganic filler and polymer matrix. The results show that the BTO@PS-co-mah/PS composites, in which the interfacial layer of PS-co-mah would undergo chemical reactions with the aminated BTO and blend PS matrix with excellent physical compatibility, exhibit enhanced breakdown strength and declined dielectric loss compared with both pure PS and BTO/PS without interfacial modulation. Particularly, the BTO@PS-co-mah/PS composite with 5 wt% filler content indicates optimized performance with an Eb of 507 MV m−1 and tan δ of 0.085%. It is deduced that the deep energy traps introduced by the PS-co-mah layer would weaken the local electric field and suppress the space charge transporting so as to optimize the performance of composites. Consequently, the interfacial-modified BTO@PS-co-mah/PS would present great potential for applications, such as film capacitors.

Polymer dielectric composites are extensively used in modern electronic devices because of their extremely high power density. However, unfavorable coupling between breakdown strength and dielectric permittivity can make achieving high energy density a challenge. In this study, reduced graphene oxide @ barium titanate (RGO@BTO) hybrid nanosheets have been fabricated and utilized as fillers in the design of RGO@BTO/P(VDF-HFP) single-layer films. An increase in permittivity to 24.8@10 kHz, i.e., equivalent to 253% of the P(VDF-HFP) (∼9.8@10 kHz) matrix, has been achieved with only 1 wt % RGO@BTO nanofillers due to the formation of microcapacitors. Furthermore, the RGO@BTO/P(VDF-HFP) film is hot-pressed with a PEI film and a P(VDF-HFP) film, forming a trilayer structure. Consequently, this trilayer film displays a high breakdown strength of 478 kV/mm, a high energy density of 8.25 J/cm3, and a satisfactory efficiency of 64.3%. Thus, this study provides an efficient route for designing polymer composites that combine high energy density with high permittivity.

Droplet manipulation on functional surfaces is an urgent problem to be solved. Fast and precise droplet manipulation plays an important role in many applications, such as microreactors and microfluidics. Although numerous techniques have been developed to manipulate droplets by injecting external stimuli, it remains a challenge to achieve high-precision, high-sensitivity, and fast droplet manipulation on smart, slippery response surfaces. Here, we report an intelligent slippery photopyroelectric response near-infrared-induced MXene-barium titanate/polyimide (SFMBPI) membrane. By using local near-infrared radiation (NIR), we can precisely control the droplet transport on the SFMBPI membrane, and SFMBPI uses electrospinning technology to better lock the dimethylsilicone oil, reducing the loss during the control process. Moreover, due to the presence of the pyroelectric layer, double external stimuli can be achieved. The thermal stimulation of the photothermal layer and the charge action of the pyroelectric layer make the manipulation of droplets on the SFMBPI surface more efficient and faster. Moreover, the experiment of negative gravity transport at an inclination angle of 6° demonstrates that the existence of the pyroelectric layer results in a greater driving force on the droplets, which can be more widely used. In addition, by inducing the direction of the NIR, programmable droplet transport and droplet merging can be achieved. Also, the SFMBPI membrane can be used for underwater bubble manipulation. This precise manipulation of droplets on the surface of SFMBPI membranes can be widely used in other fields, such as microfluidics.

The shrinkage rate of Ni0.6Zn0.4Fe1.8O4 (NZF) ferrite was controlled to enable cofiring with BaTiO3 (BTO) at 1250 °C, forming BTO-NZF laminated structures. Postcofiring microstructural analysis revealed a well-bonded interface with minimal elemental interdiffusion. Notably, Ti4+ exhibited the highest diffusion coefficient (1.60 ± 0.05 × 10–12 cm2/s). Unidentified phases on the NZF side effectively restricted Ba2+ and Ti4+ diffusion. The BTO-NZF heterojunction consisted primarily of nanoscale amorphous layers containing Ba2+ and coherent crystalline regions. The dense amorphous barrier layer not only ensured strong interfacial bonding but also significantly suppressed interdiffusion. High-quality heterojunction formation was influenced by four primary factors, including the presence of similar ionic radii and interplanar spacings, amorphous barrier layers, and a certain concentration of large-radius ions. Magnetic characterization showed that NZF had a saturation magnetization (Ms) of 70.29 ± 0.50 emu/g, a coercivity (Hc) of 8.89 ± 0.50 Oe, and a remanent magnetization (Mr) of 1.01 emu/g. The relative dielectric constant (εr) of BTO ranged from 1490 to 2500 (at 1 MHz), while the dielectric loss tangent (tanδ) varied between 4 × 10–3 and 1.25 × 10–2. These findings offer valuable guidance for selecting cofired laminated substrates and designing high-performance heterojunctions. Moreover, the resulting cofired laminates exhibit excellent electromagnetic properties, demonstrating strong potential for magnetoelectric coupling applications.

The efficient conversion of ambient acoustic energy into electrical power has attracted considerable research interest for its potential to sustainably power microelectronics and self-powered sensors. Nevertheless, the development of an acoustoelectric transducer that simultaneously delivers broadband response, high conversion efficiency, and substantial power output remains a pressing challenge. Herein, we report a broadband high-output acoustoelectric transducer. The device architecture features an electrospun barium titanate (BTO)/poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) nanofiber membrane, sandwiched between two gold-coated poly(ethylene terephthalate) electrodes with a precisely engineered air spacer. Upon acoustic wave excitation, the membrane and electrode exhibit contact-separation motion, simultaneously exciting both piezoelectric and triboelectric effects. The optimized device, comprising a 0.5 mm air spacer and a 3% BTO-doped PVDF-HFP nanofiber membrane, achieves a peak output of 410.28 V and 50.24 μA under 115 dB acoustic excitation at 170 Hz. The instantaneous maximum power density reaches 11576.12 μW/cm3 (the peak surface power density is 845.06 μW/cm2). The electrical energy generated can directly power miniature electronic devices without additional energy supplying equipment. This structure effectively converts acoustic waves into an electric signal from 1 to 5000 Hz (including infrasound). Therefore, the device holds potential for detecting and warning against natural disasters associated with infrasound emissions. This acoustoelectric transducer thus exhibits promising application prospects in noise energy recovery, environmental monitoring, self-powered systems, speech recognition, and human-computer interaction.

Piezoelectric nanofibers that combine the flexibility of organic polymers with the high piezoelectricity of inorganic ceramics have garnered significant attention in the field of wearable devices. However, a significant obstacle is the loss of sensing ability, due to the weak interfacial bonding between inorganic fillers and organic matrices. Here, a novel composite nanofiber is proposed via coaxial electrospinning strategy, which couples two functional units of Barium Titanate (BTO)/Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) into the entirety. In addition, the dual-solvent synergistic strategy combined with surface modification enhances interfacial bonding, fully leveraging the synergistically enhanced piezoelectricity to boost performance. The developed piezoelectric sensor, possessing high sensitivity and durability, can accurately distinguish various subtle facial muscle movements. More importantly, with the aid of the optimized deep learning model based on the electrical outputs, the different emotional states, including surprise, disgust, happiness, anger, and sadness, can be classified with an accuracy of 98.70 %. This capability of the sensor and related algorithm model can underscore the practical utility of human physiological monitoring, which provides an opens new avenues for the development of human–machine interaction technologies.

Flexible piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs) are emerging as sustainable power sources for self-charging wearable electronic devices due to their capability to harvest mechanical energy from the environment. Here, we have developed a high-output flexible PENGs based on electrospun composite nanofibers involving poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), barium titanate modified by dopamine hydrochloride (PDA@BTO) with an enhanced electroactive phase. On addition of 3 wt % PDA@BTO nanoparticles, the electroactive β-phase of the PVDF is found to be intensified to ∼88.05% as account of the synergistic interfacial interaction between the PDA@BTO nanoparticles and the ferroelectric host polymer substrate on electrospinning. The introduction of carbon black (CB) promotes piezoelectric charge transfer and increases output power. The PBTO/CB/PVDF composite nanofibers delivered the highest V OC of 55 V and the optimal I SC 3.1 μA with 3% PBTO and 1% CB. The fabricated PENG based PBTO/CB/PVDF composite nanofibers successfully charged capacitors with capacities of 0.1 μF, 0.33 μF, and 1 μF to voltages of 1.9 V, 3.2 V, and 10 V within 400 s, respectively. The device has response time of 0.1 s and the d 33 piezoelectric constant of 1.7 pC/N. The piezoelectric devices exhibited minimal variation in voltage and excellent stability over 900 cycles and the prepared piezoelectric device can light up to 20 LEDs. The potential of the piezoelectric composite nanofiber membranes for assembling mechanical energy collectors and piezoelectric sensors was demonstrated.

Multiferroic materials exhibit significant potential for next-generation microelectronics and energy storage applications due to their coupled ferroelectric and magnetic properties. Herein, BiFe 0.98 Mn 0.02 O 3 (BFMO) thin films were deposited on BaTiO 3 (BTO)/Pt/Ti/SiO 2 /Si substrates using sol-gel spin coating, with BTO serving as a buffer layer. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy revealed well-oriented growth and densified microstructures with reduced grain size in the BiFe 0.98 Mn 0.02 O 3 /BaTiO 3 (BFMO/BTO) bilayer. The BFMO/BTO heterostructure exhibited a marginally higher dielectric constant and lower dielectric loss compared to single-layer BTO films, attributed to interfacial polarization and synergistic interactions between layers. Moreover, a notably low leakage current density on the order of 10 −6 A/cm 2 is observed for the BFMO/BTO films at an applied field of ±300 kV/cm. Furthermore, the BFMO/BTO heterostructure films exhibit remarkably enhanced saturation magnetization of 52 emu/cc and improved maximum polarization of 31.43 μC/cm 2 at RT compared to single-layer films. The polarization-electric field ( P - E ) hysteresis loops indicated slim hysteresis with reduced coercive fields in the BFMO/BTO heterostructure, suggesting improved ferroelectric switching dynamics. In particular, the BFMO/BTO film achieved a remarkable recoverable energy storage density ( W rec ) of 9.99 J/cm 3 at 450 kV/cm. These findings highlight the critical role of interfacial engineering in optimizing multiferroic and energy storage properties, offering valuable insights for moderate electric field energy storage devices.

In this article, a piezoelectric thin film was obtained by mixing polyvinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene (P(VDF-TrFE)) and barium titanate (BTO) via a solvent vaporization process. All the morphologies, crystal phases, thermal and electrical tests, as well as potential simulations by COMSOL, were studied to analyze sample performances. It has been demonstrated that BTO has a positive effect on increasing the piezoelectric functional phase-β phase within P(VDF-TrFE). Furthermore, the optimal ratio of BTO to P(VDF-TrFE) was determined to be 10 wt%. BTO nanoparticles were evenly distributed in the P(VDF-TrFE) substrate, forming a more directional structure. Based on the most suitable material composition, piezoelectric, and triboelectric nanogenerators were constructed to harvest mechanical energy from human motions. Moreover, the factors influencing the electrical outputs of nanogenerators were systematically studied, such as the force values and frequencies of excitation, as well as the piezoelectric layer materials. The applications of lighting LEDs highlighted the practical use in everyday life. Finally, the comparison between simulations, theoretical analysis, and experimental results demonstrated the effect of BTO in enhancing the overall material properties. This work expands the application potential of piezoelectric nanocomposites in energy collection and storage by designing and optimizing ceramic-doped piezoelectric polymer composites.
