Improvements of dielectric properties and energy storage performances in BaTiO3/PVDF nanocomposites by employing a thermal treatment process

Yue-Mao Dang,Ming-Sheng Zheng,Jun-Wei Zha

The influence of thermal treatment on the dielectric properties and energy storage performances of a classical dielectric nanocomposite system (barium titanate/polyvinylidene fluoride PVDF) was discussed systematically. The results demonstrated that the permittivity of thermal treated nanocomposites increased and dielectric loss decreased compared with the untreated system. In addition, the energy density was also greatly improved due to the inclined residual polarization. For example, the energy density of the treated nanocomposite with 50 vol.% nanofillers was 3.14 times higher than the untreated nanocomposite at 50 MV/m. Moreover, the charge–discharge efficiency was also promoted from 6.36% to 56.89%. According to the viewpoint of microstructure, the improvement of the dielectric and energy storage properties would be ascribed to the suppression on void defects in the interphase of dielectric nanocomposite by employing the thermal treatment process. Finally, thermal treatment turns out to be a simple and an effective method to improve the dielectric performances and energy storage properties in the dielectric nanocomposites.

Interface induced performance enhancement in flexible BaTiO3/PVDF-TrFE based piezoelectric nanogenerators

Kunming Shi,Bin Chai,Haiyang Zou,Peiyue Shen,Bin Sun,Pingkai Jiang,Zhiwen Shi,Xingyi Huang

Nanocomposites consisting of a flexible piezoelectric polymer and a reinforcing phase have shown great potential for constructing high-performance piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs). However, the weak interface and poor dispersion of piezoelectric reinforcing phase significantly impair the electromechanical properties (e.g. , effective stress/strain, piezoelectric coefficients) of the nanocomposites, thus severely restricting the performance enhancement of the PENGs. In this study, we hydrothermally synthesized the piezoelectric reinforcing phase of BaTiO 3 nanowires , and grafted a layer of high-modulus polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) onto the nanowire surface via surface-initiated polymerization. The PMMA coating layer forms a strong interface between BaTiO 3 nanowires and the polymer matrix [i.e ., poly(vinylidenefluoride-co-trifluoroethylene)], which efficiently improves dispersion of the BaTiO 3 nanowires and stress transfer at the interface, therefore resulting in an enhanced output performance in the fibrous nanocomposite PENGs. The output voltage and current of the PMMA encapsulated BaTiO 3 (PMMA@BaTiO 3 ) nanowires-based PENG can reach to 12.6 V and 1.30 μA, with a maximum output power of 4.25 μW, which is 2.2 times and 7.6 times higher than the PENG with unmodified BaTiO 3 nanowires and the PENG without BaTiO 3 nanowires, respectively. Furthermore, the flexible PENG exhibits great stability that could continuously generate stable electrical pulses for 6000 cycles without any decline. This study provides a feasible approach of interface tailoring for achieving high-performance piezoelectric nanocomposite and shows the promising potential of the fibrous nanocomposites in biomechanical energy harvesters and smart wearable sensors.

Nanowire-in-bowl-shaped piezoelectric cavity structure for SERS directional detection of nanoplastics less than 50 nm

Enze Lv,Junkun Wang,Jing Li,Xiaofei Zhao,Jing Yu,Shicai Xu,Zhen Li,Baoyuan Man,Mei Xue,Mei Xue,Jihua Xu,Jihua Xu,Chao Zhang

The accurate detection of nanoplastics is crucial due to their harmful effects on the environment and human beings. However, there is a lack of detection methods for nanoplastics smaller than 50 nm. In this research, we successfully constructed an Ag/CuO nanowire (NW)/BaTiO3@Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) Bowl-shaped substrate with a nanowire-in-Bowl-shaped piezoelectric cavity structure that can modulate surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) by the piezoelectric effect by the virtue of the tip effect of the CuO NW and light focusing effect of the Bowl-shaped cavity. Due to its unique nanowire-in-Bowl-shaped structure and piezoelectrically modifiable ability, nanoplastics less than 50 nm were successfully detected and quantitatively analyzed. We believe that the Ag/CuO NW/BaTiO3@PVDF Bowl-shaped substrate can provide an efficient, accurate, and feasible way to achieve qualitative and quantitative detection of nanoplastics.

Superior Piezocatalytic Activity and Environmental Adaptability in Micro-Nano-Engineered BaTiO3/PVDF@Ag Composite Structure

Bing Xie,Wenpeng Gao,Zhiyong Liu,Kun Guo,Qingping Wang,Shenglin Jiang,Chris Bowen,Huajie Luo,Tianyu Li

Piezocatalysis, the direct conversion of mechanical energy into chemical reactivity, offers a promising route for sustainable pollutant removal and chemical synthesis. However, practical applications require materials that are able to simultaneously deliver high activity, stability, and ease of recycling. Here, we report a flexible micro-nano-engineered BaTiO 3 /PVDF@Ag composite film, whereby {111} BaTiO 3 single-crystal microsheets are embedded in a poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix and decorated with photo-deposited Ag nanoparticles. This BaTiO 3 /PVDF@Ag composite microstructure design endows the optimal composite with outstanding piezocatalytic performance, including a Rhodamine B degradation rate constant of 0.24 min −1 , a hydrogen peroxide generation rate of 3520 µmol g −1 h −1 , and a CO 2 reduction rate of 535 µmol g −1 h −1 , while maintaining its activity over repeated cycles. Systematic structural, spectroscopic, and electrochemical characterization, together with theoretical simulations, reveal that the ferroelectric BaTiO 3 and electroactive β -phase PVDF enhance the local piezoelectric potential under mechanical stimulation, while the Ag nanoparticles act as efficient electron traps and catalytic sites. Interfacial polarization as resulting from the dielectric and conductivity mismatches between the composite components also reduces charge-transfer resistance and thereby accelerates carrier separation and migration. These synergistic effects enable efficient formation of reactive oxygen species, thereby driving high H 2 O 2 yields and CO 2 reduction. The mechanically robust film can also be easily recovered and reused, demonstrating a viable route to green, high-performance piezocatalysts for environmental applications.

Processing-Enhanced β-Phase Formation in BaTiO3/PVDF Composite Fibers with High Electroactive Phase Content

Marouene Ben Ouali,Anik Das,Chayma Ben Harrath,Xu Lei,Rony Mia

Flexible piezoelectric fibers are promising materials for next-generation wearable and flexible electronic devices due to their lightweight structure, mechanical flexibility, and electromechanical response. In this study, BaTiO3/PVDF composite fibers were prepared by melt spinning under an electrostatic field, followed by thermal drawing to enhance the electroactive phase content. The effects of BaTiO3loading, draw ratio, thermal stretching ratio, stretching rate, and electric field strength on the crystalline structure of the fibers were systematically investigated. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and electron microscopy were used to evaluate phase evolution, crystallinity, and filler distribution. The results showed that the processing conditions significantly influenced the transformation of PVDF from the α-phase to the electroactive β-phase. The optimized fibers were obtained at 1 wt.% BaTiO3, a thermal stretching ratio of 5, a stretching rate of 40 mm/min, and an electric field strength of 18 kV, resulting in a crystallinity of 61.3% and a β-phase content of 95.5%. The enhanced structural characteristics indicate the strong potential of the developed composite fibers for flexible electroactive applications, though direct electromechanical characterization is required for device integration.

Flexible piezoelectric pressure sensor based on polydopamine-modified BaTiO3/PVDF composite film for human motion monitoring

Ye Yang,Hong Pan,Guangzhong Xie,Yadong Jiang,Chunxu Chen,Yuanjie Su,Yang Wang,Huiling Tai

Flexible pressure sensors based on piezoelectric materials have been intensively investigated for their wide applications in wearable electronics. However, traditional films based on inorganic/organic composite piezoelectric materials face the bottleneck of defects and cracks or poor dispersion, which hinders the performance of pressure sensors. Herein, polydopamine (PDA) was introduced as a surface modification agent to modify barium titanate (BaTiO 3 , BTO), which was then blended with poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix in different ratios to form uniform and homogeneous PDA@BTO/PVDF composites. Afterwards, the flexible piezoelectric pressure sensor was fabricated by a facial solution-casting method. This PDA-modification strategy can improve the dispersion of BTO into PVDF matrix, as well as reduce the interface hole defects and cracks between the two components. As a result, the 17 wt% PDA@BTO/PVDF sensor exhibited a fast response of 61 ms and a remarkable piezoelectric output voltage of 9.3 V, which showed obvious improvement as compared to the pristine PVDF and BTO/PVDF composite counterparts. In addition, as an energy supplier, the sensor could produce a maximum power of 0.122 μW/cm 2 even with high load resistance of 70 MΩ. This pressure sensor was sensitive to various human motions, showing great potential in the applications of wearable electronics.

Jiaqi Zheng,Yunming Wang,Guang Liu,Zhaohan Yu,Shuang Sun,Yue Fu,Dan Chen,Weihao Cai,Jingqiang Cui,Guosheng Wang,Huamin Zhou

Flexible, lightweight and self-charging power units offer a promising solution to supply sustainable and clean electric energy for various electronic devices. Herein, a type of self-charging composite separator based on the poly(vinylidenefluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE) interconnected skeleton and doped BaTiO 3 piezo-nanoparticles is advocated, which can be employed to fabricate flexible self-charging supercapacitors (SCs) assembled with electrodes and applied to efficiently harvest and storage ubiquitous mechanical energy as electrochemical energy. The high-performance separator with interconnected pores not only exhibits enhanced piezoelectric property ( V oc  = 190 V, I sc  = 58.10 μA), but also possesses superior ionic conductivity of 2.01 × 10 −3  S/cm and mechanical property (breaking tensile stress of 12.14 MPa). Based on the BaTiO 3 /PVDF-TrFE separators, the self-charging supercapacitors can rapidly self-charge from 110 mV to 748 mV in 8.2 s, which also exhibits admirable specific capacitance (36.36 F/g) and superior cycling stability (capacitance retention of 98% after 10,000 cycles). Possessing outstanding electrochemical performance and mechanical property, the innovational separator with superior feasibility and potential application presented here improves a promising versatile electrolyte design strategy for highly-integrated sustainable self-charging power supply.

Soft-metal bonding-enabled recyclable and anti-interference flexible multilayer piezoelectric sensor for tractor tire strain monitoring

Chun-Xiao Xing,Qiu-Bo Zhang,Zhong-Hao Wang,Jun-Xian Guo,Mao-Lin Li,De-Hai Yu,Ya-Dong Wang,Quan Zhou,Wei Tang,Zhen Li,Zhi-Zhu He

Real-time efficient sensing of machine-soil interactions, especially precise tire-ground contact information, plays a critical role in cultivation, seeding, and harvesting for smart agriculture. However, the complicated agricultural environment poses a considerable challenge to traditional rigid sensors, which cannot suffer from both large deformation and electromagnetic interference . Here, we report a novel soft-metal BiInSn bonding-enabled recyclable and anti-interference flexible multilayer piezoelectric sensor for monitoring tractor tire strain. The printed BiInSn-ink electrode fully wraps the surface fibers of porous BaTiO 3 /PVDF-HFP electrospun films only through a low pressure at low temperature due to its unique thermal-softening effects, which of the adhesion strength is superior to the intrinsic tension limit of the film. The compact multilayer piezoelectric sensor is thus easily prepared, remarkably increasing the output voltage compared to a single-layer case (up to 300% for three layers). Benefiting from the low melting point of the BiInSn alloy, the sensors are easily recyclable compared to conventional metal electrodes prepared with copper, silver, and gold. In addition, its high electrical conductivity also enables the shielding layer to achieve ultrahigh shielding effectiveness of 2100 dB mm −1 . This sensor can be demonstrated for tire strain sensing under complex operating conditions such as plowing, harrowing, and fertilizer application . These findings serve as a foundation for accelerating the development of smart agriculture.
