BaCeO3-based proton conductors have comparatively high-proton conductivity, but the low chemical stability and high sintering temperature seriously hinder their practical applications in protonic ceramic fuel cells. Herein, we demonstrate that this limitation can be conciliated by using a triple-doping strategy in a BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.2O3−δ (BZCY) electrolyte, where the triply doped BaCe0.7Sn0.1Dy0.15Cu0.05O3−δ (BCSDCu) exhibits better chemical stability and conductivity and lower sintering temperature compared with the pristine BZCY. The phase-pure BCSDCu can be obtained at the sintering temperature of 1100 °C prepared by solid-state reaction. The dense BCSDCu (>95%) is achieved at 1350 °C, which is significantly lower than the 1550 °C of BZCY. The BCSDCu presents competitive proton conductivity of 13.6 mS cm–1 under a moist H2 atmosphere at 600 °C. The anode-supported single cell with the BCSDCu (≈40 μm) as the electrolyte reaches the highest power density of 390 mW cm–2 at 600 °C. On the basis of the distribution of relaxation time analysis, we not only distinguish the contribution of grain and grain-boundary conductivities but also identify the rate-determining step of the single-cell performance. The protonic conductivities, mechanical properties, and impurity clean parts induced by grain size effects are discussed for the BCSDCu proton conductor.

Two BaZr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.2 O 3-δ (BZCY) powders prepared by solid-state reaction (BZCY(sr)) and sol-gel (BZCY(sg)) methods and three NiO powders (two commercial NiO with large (NiO(L)) and small (NiO(S)) particles and one prepared by solution-infiltration method (NiO(I)) are used to study the effect of the particle sizes of BZCY powder and NiO sintering aid on the sinterability and conductivity of sintered BZCY electrolytes for protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs). The BZCY and NiO powders are examined by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The microstructures of the six BZCY-NiO mixtures sintered at 1500 °C in air for 6 h, named as sr-L, sr-S, sr-I, sg-L, sg-S, and sg-I, are characterized by SEM to compare their pore morphology and grain size , and their conductivities from 550 to 800 °C in a 5 vol% H 2 –N 2 atmosphere are measured using the four-probe and impedance spectroscopy methods, respectively. The results show that sr-L and sg-L are not fully dense with large pores, most of them are at the grain boundaries; sr-S and sg-S have a much denser microstructure; sr-I and sg-I have the highest density with fine pores. The average grain size , the conductivity, and the grain-boundary resistance follow the orders of sr-L (8.16 μm) ≈ sg-L (8.53 μm) < sr-S (10.59 μm) ≈ sg-I (10.65 μm) < sg-S (14.07 μm) < sg-I (26.08 μm), sr-L < sg-L < sr-S < sg-S ≈ sr-I < sg-I, and sr-L > sg-L > sr-S > sg-S ≈ sr-I > sg-I, respectively. The above results indicate that both the density and grain size affect the conductivity critically, and sg-I with the small-particle BZCY and fine and uniformly distributed NiO sintering aid has the highest sintered density and the biggest grains (fewest grain boundaries) and in turn the highest conductivity (0.039 S cm −1 at 800 °C). A cell with the sg-I electrolyte demonstrates electrochemical performance 1.8 times higher than that with the sr-L electrolyte.

For the sake of enhance the sinter ability and electrical conductivity of BaZr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.2 O 3-δ (BZCY) electrolytes, a modified aqueous gel-casting method was applied to synthesize high sintering active and high conductive BZCY nano-powders. The new approach makes it easy to obtain pure perovskite. The highly sintering active purity-phase of BZCY nano-powder (particle size of 50∼100 nm) was obtained by calcining at 1100°C for 2 h. Nano-powders effectively reduce the sintering densification temperature and successfully prepare BZCY electrolyte with relative density > 96 % at 1450°C, and promote grain growth with an average grain size of 2.36 μm. Benefiting from this, improved electrical conductivities (e.g., 12.4×10 −3 S cm −1 at 700°C, in wet air) are obtained. The NiO-BZCY/BZCY/LSCF-BZCY anode-supporting single cell shows a peak power density of 0.75 W cm −2 at 700°C while taking ambient air as oxidants and wet H 2 (∼3 vol.% H 2 O) as fuels.

Interfacial heterojunction effects have been widely recognized as a critical strategy to enhance ionic conductivity in low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (LT-SOFCs). However, existing studies predominantly focus on heterostructures composed of materials with distinct crystal structures. In contrast, this study presents a novel composite electrolyte comprising two perovskite-type oxides with analogous crystal structures: Sr 0.95 Ce 0.05 CoO 3-δ (SCC) and BaZr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.2 O 3-δ (BZCY). Microstructural characterizations reveal that nanoscale interfacial contacts and atomic-level continuity are established by coating BZCY grains onto the surfaces of SCC grains at various mass ratios. The formed homotypic heterostructure enriches the oxygen vacancy concentration by 12.4% relative to that of BZCY, which can be attributed to the lattice dislocations at the SCC–BZCY interface. The fuel cell employing the optimal 2SCC–8BZCY composite electrolyte achieves a peak power density of 914 mW cm −2 at 520 °C, 1.8 times higher than that with BZCY electrolyte (517 mW cm −2 ). The corresponding electrolyte ionic conductivity reaches 0.208 S cm −1 , 2.15 times higher than that of BZCY electrolyte. The superior electrochemical performance of the composite cell can be attributed to the formation of a heterojunction and generated built-in electric field (BIEF) at the SCC–BZCY interface, which suppresses electronic conduction meanwhile boosts ionic conduction, as confirmed by the band structure analysis.

Slurry spin coating is an effective approach for the fabrication of protonic ceramic electrolyte thin films. However, weak adhesion between the electrode and spin-coated electrolyte layers in electrochemical cells due to the low sinterability of the proton-conducting perovskite materials usually lead to a high interfacial resistance and thus a low performance. Herein, we report a method to improve the interfacial connection and boost the performance of protonic ceramic cells based on a BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.2O3−δ (BZCY) electrolyte. Ni-BZCY anode functional layer, BZCY electrolyte layer and La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3−δ-BZCY cathode functional layer are all fabricated by slurry spin coating. The electrode functional layers and the components of the electrolyte slurry influence the microstructure of the single cell and the kinetics of the electrochemical processes significantly. A peak power density of 2345 mW cm–2 is achieved at 700 °C in the fuel cell mode, and a current density of –3.0 A cm–2 is obtained at an applied voltage of 1.3 V in the electrolysis mode.

Grain boundary resistance is one of the main factors inhibiting the electrical properties of BaZr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.2 O 3-δ (BZCY) proton conduction electrolytes for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). The Cu-doping strategy is applied to improve the electrical performance of grain boundary by promoting the grain growth and reducing the grain boundary blocking effect. For BaZr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.2-x Cu x O 3-δ (BZCYCu x , x = 0, 0.025, 0.050, 0.075, 0.100), the largest average grain size is 11.64 μm, which is approximately 5 times that of the BZCY electrolyte without Cu doping (2.13 μm). The optimized electrical performance is 1.64 × 10 −2 S cm −1 at 700 °C in moist air, which is twice that of BZCY. This is mainly attributed to the enhanced grain boundary conductivity by appropriate Cu doping, while BZCYCu 0.075 has the highest w / d g (0.733) and a relative low Δ φ (0) (0.201). The anode-supported cell shows a peak power density of 810 mW cm −2 at 700 °C in moist H 2 (as fuels) and ambient air (as oxidants).

Medium-entropy BaZr 0.1 Ce 0.5 Y 0.2 Dy 0.2 O 3-δ (BZCYD) electrolytes with a configurational entropy of 1.22 R are prepared by doping Dy element into low-entropy BaZr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.2 O 3-δ ( BZCY, 0.80 R). The entropy increasing strategy makes dramatically contribution to the improved chemical stability against CO 2 and H 2 O, and the relevant mechanism is clarified by the density functional theory (DFT). The BZCYD electrolyte shows stable phase composition and micro-structure after CO 2 heat treatment at 700 °C for 3 h and H 2 O treatment boiled for 3 h, while generation of impurities of BaCO 3 and Ba(OH) 2 accompanied by destroyed micro-structure are formed in the BZCY electrolyte under the same conditions. The total conductivity decay rates of BZCYD electrolyte after CO 2 heat treatment and H 2 O treatment are 44.1 % and 52.5 %, respectively, which exhibit significantly better than those of BZCY electrolyte (88 % and 74 %). According to the first-principles calculation, BZCYD electrolyte has higher CO 2 reaction energy barrier (5.21 eV) and H 2 O reaction energy barrier (7.30 eV), as well as lower CO 2 adsorption energy (−5.182 eV) and H 2 O adsorption energy (−0.742 eV), so it has better chemical stability. The peak power density of the anode-supported single cell with BZCYD electrolyte is 510 mW cm −2 at 700 °C in humid H 2 .
