Hybrid porous magnetic bentonite-chitosan beads for selective removal of radioactive cesium in water

Kexin Wang,Hui Ma,Shengyan Pu,Chun Yan,Miaoting Wang,Jing Yu,Xiaoke Wang,Wei Chu,Anatoly Zinchenko

Easy-to-obtain magnetic bentonite-chitosan hybrid beads (Bn-CTS) were prepared by immobilizing bentonite within a porous structure of chitosan beads to achieve a hybrid adsorption effect for the removal of cesium ion (Cs + ) from water. The hybrid adsorbent, which had a porous structure and abundant binding sites contributed by both chitosan and bentonite, ensured superb adsorption characteristics. The paramagnetic character of the beads enabled their facile separation for recycling. The chitosan/bentonite ratio, pH and contact time were optimized to achieve the optimal Cs + efficiency, and the adsorption kinetics and isotherms were thoroughly discussed. The adsorption kinetics obeyed the pseudo-second-order model, and the best fitted equation for equilibrium data was the Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity of the bentonite-chitosan beads was 57.1 mg g −1 . The adsorbent had excellent selectivity towards Cs + adsorption in the presence of abundant cations (Li + , Na + , K + and Mg 2+ ). The adsorbent was able to be recycled by treating the beads with 0.1 mol L −1 of MgCl 2 to quantitatively desorb Cs + from the beads. Overall, the magnetic bentonite-chitosan beads can be used as a highly efficient adsorbent for radioactive waste disposal and management.

Preparation and ammonium adsorption behavior of interpenetrating polymer networks hydrogel of chitosan-g-poly(acrylic acid)/bentonite and chitosan-glutaraldehyde

Nguyen Binh Duong,Quan Thi Thu Trang,Phan Thi Ngoc Bich,Pham Van Lam

In this article, new interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogel as an efficient adsorbent for ammonium was prepared by a two-step process. First, semi-IPN hydrogel of chitosan-g-poly(acrylic acid)/bentonite (CAB) and chitosan (CTS) was synthesized by grafting polymerization in the presence of exfoliated bentonite as both cross-linking agent and nanoscale inorganic filler. Second, cross-linking polymer network of chitosan-glutaraldehyde (CGA) was formed by reaction of CTS with glutaraldehyde (GA). The obtained IPN hydrogel (CAB/CGA) was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and its swelling degree and PZC value were also measured. These results demonstrate that copolymerized graft reaction was occurred between CTS, AA and bentonite forming CAB, and CGA presented as a cross-linker in CAB/CGA polymer network. CAB/CGA has a moderate swelling degree of 7.8. CAB/CGA exhibits high adsorption capacity and fast adsorption rate for ammonium. Adsorption process reaches equilibrium in 30 min and fits well to Langmuir adsorption model with a fairly high maximum adsorption capacity of 41.06 mg g −1 . The material has a good regeneration ability. After five times of adsorption–desorption, there was almost no decrease in ammonium adsorption capacity. Moreover, the low swelling degree leads to an improvement in material strength and a reduction of equipment cost.

Two-dimensional Na-Bentonite@MXene composite membrane with switchable wettability for selective oil/water separation

Liyi Zhang,Yongcong Liu,Guangyong Zeng,Zhaomei Yang,Qingquan Lin,Yanyong Wang,Xiaoguang Wang,Shengyan Pu

MXene-based two-dimensional (2D) material membranes have attracted an increasing number of attentions in the field of separation and purification. However, the easily oil-pollution of MXene membrane still limit its further application for oil/water separation. In this work, Na-Bentonite was embedded into MXene nanosheets and then a series of Na-Bentonite@MXene (NBM) composite membranes were prepared by one-step hydrothermal pretreatment and vacuum self-assembly on polyvinylidene fluoride membrane surface. The modified composite membranes exhibited excellent separation performances with a rejection ratio above 96 % and a flux recovery rate (FRR) higher than 86 % after 8 cycling tests for oil/water emulsion. In addition, the sandwich structure consisting of MXene nanosheets and Na-Bentonite could not only play a positive role in the stability of composite membrane, but also formed a special micro-nano structure on membrane surface, resulting in a switchable wettability of composite membrane. When the membrane surface was pretreated with water or oil, it presented hydrophilic/hydrophobic or hydrophobic/oleophilic surfaces, respectively, which realized the effective separation for different components in oil/water emulsion. This work provides a new method for the design and construction of MXene-based 2D membrane with continuous anti-fouling capacity, which shows a great application potential in the treatment of oily wastewater.

A novel layer-layer crossed structure of bentonite/g-C3N4 for enhanced photocatalytic oxidation of arsenic(III) in a wide pH range

Chunli Wang,Yunxiang Dai,Xiaoheng Fu,Hongbo Lu,Jing Zhang

In this work, a novel 2-dimentional (2D)-2D bentonite/g-C 3 N 4 composite (B/g-C 3 N 4 ), with a layer-layer cross structure and large surface area, was synthesized by a self-assembly process, with the aim for the photocatalytic oxidation of arsenic (As(III)) in wastewater. The structure and properties of the mineral-based composite were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and photocurrent measurements. The photocatalytic activity of 2D-2D B/g-C3N4 for As(III) removal was further investigated under visible light . The results reveal that the As(III) oxidation rate by 2D-2D B/g-C3N4 composite was three times higher than that by pure g-C3N4, owing to the enlarged specific surface area and the suppressed electron–hole recombination by the incorporated bentonite. Moreover, the composite exhibited a high photocatalytic oxidation efficiency in a wide pH adaptability from 3 to 8.5. Through electron spin resonance (ESR) technique and radical quenching experiments, the photocatalytic mechanism of As(III) oxidation was proposed, where superoxide radicals played a critical role in the photo-oxidation of As(III) in both acid and basic conditions. This work paved a new way to design the mineral-based photocatalyst for treatment of pollutants in a wide pH range.

Improving the Nutrient Management of an Apple Orchard by Using Organic-Based Composites Derived from Agricultural Waste

Florence Alexandra Tóth,Tamás Magyar,János Tamás,Péter Tamás Nagy

Extreme weather and the declining organic matter content of soils cause serious sustainability problems in agriculture. Therefore, soil conditioner composites (chicken manure, bentonite and super absorbent polymer) were developed and tested in an integrated apple orchard characterized by poor nutrient and water management to study their effects on soil, leaf and fruit attributes. Composites with higher doses of additives increased soil organic carbon by 4–9 g/kg, and organic nitrogen by 1.8–2.8 g/kg compared to the control (p< 0.05). Similarly, soil nitrate content steadily increased from 8–10 mg/kg to 30–38 mg/kg by composites. Composites effectively elevated leaf N, K, Ca, and Mg while not affecting the leaf P (p< 0.05). Treatments significantly enhanced the yields by 14–63% on average compared to the control. Treatments with bentonite improved the fruit weight by 2% and 24% compared to the chicken manure. On average, composite treatments increased the titratable acidity of fruits by 26–43% compared to the control and 0.5–10% compared to the treatment containing solely chicken manure. Overall, the developed organic-based composites are able to cope with changing circumstances that could help mitigate the negative effects of climate change, especially in arid areas, thus contributing to sustainable nutrient management.

Thermoresponsive Bentonite for Water-Based Drilling Fluids

Wenxin Dong,Xiaolin Pu,Yanjun Ren

As an important industrial material, bentonite has been widely applied in water-based drilling fluids to create mud cakes to protect boreholes. However, the common mud cake is porous, and it is difficult to reduce the filtration of a drilling fluid at high temperature. Therefore, this paper endowed bentonite with a thermo response via the insertion of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) monomers. The interaction between NIPAM monomers and bentonite was investigated via Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), isothermal adsorption, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) at various temperatures. The results demonstrate that chemical adsorption is involved in the adsorption process of NIPAM monomers on bentonite, and the adsorption of NIPAM monomers accords with the D–R model. With increasing temperature, more adsorption water was squeezed out of the composite when the temperature of the composite exceeded 70 °C. Based on the composite of NIPAM and bentonite, a mud cake was prepared using low-viscosity polyanionic cellulose (Lv-PAC) and initiator potassium peroxydisulfate (KPS). The change in the plugging of the mud cake was investigated via environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM), contact angle testing, filtration experiments, and linear expansion of the shale at various temperatures. In the plugging of the mud cake, a self-recovery behavior was observed with increasing temperature, and resistance was observed at 110 °C. The rheology of the drilling fluid was stable in the alterative temperature zone (70–110 °C). Based on the high resistance of the basic drilling fluid, a high-density drilling fluid (ρ = 2.0 g/cm3) was prepared with weighting materials with the objective of drilling high-temperature formations. By using a high-density drilling fluid, the hydration expansion of shale was reduced by half at 110 °C in comparison with common bentonite drilling fluid. In addition, the rheology of the high-density drilling fluid tended to be stable, and a self-recovery behavior was observed.Keywords:bentonite;N-isopropylacrylamide;drilling fluid;self-recovery

Bentonite-Bi activated Al for spontaneous H2 generation

Lei Xu,Weiyuan Li,Zewei Gao,Shuang Zhang,Chuang Dong

Bentonite is introduced for the first time to activate spontaneous hydrogen generation via aluminum hydrolysis under ambient conditions. The aluminum-based composite 90Al-6.5Bentonite-3.5Bi, wt.% was prepared through powder pressing and sintering at 650 °C under an argon atmosphere. This sample reacts with pure water within 1 s across a temperature range of 0 °C to 30 °C (approximate temperatures), achieving a 100% hydrogen conversion yield at 20 °C. The maximum hydrogen production reaches 1389.59 mL g −1 at 30 °C. The bentonite-activated hydrogen generation in air and at room temperature greatly facilitates the application of hydrogen energy in mobile scenarios.

Adsorption-desorption of lead by polycarboxylate-coated bentonite

Chuang Yu,Zhi-lei Zeng,Xiaoqing Cai,Zhi-hao Chen,Rao-ping Liao

To develop more economical and efficient heavy metal adsorbents, natural bentonite was employed as a raw material, and triethoxyvinylsilane served as a grafting agent to achieve the grafting bonding of sodium polyacrylate and bentonite. Structural alterations in the modified bentonite were analyzed through thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The adsorption and desorption characteristics of SAPAS-Bentonite and raw bentonite were compared and tested under various conditions, including time, temperature, pH, and lead ion concentration. The adsorption and desorption properties of sodium polyacrylate-grafted bentonite (SAPAS-Bentonite) were compared under various conditions (time, temperature, pH, and lead ion concentration). The results revealed that the modified method successfully achieved nano-scale coating of bentonite particles with sodium polyacrylate, leading to an increase in the maximum adsorption capacity of lead ions by 47.5%, reaching 165.73 mg g. A greater adsorption affinity for lead ions was exhibited by the outer sodium polycarboxylate portion of SAPAS-Bentonite compared with the inner bentonite. The adsorption of internal bentonite was limited by blocking when the adsorption of sodium polyacrylate did not reach the upper limit. The adsorption isotherm shifted from the Langmuir monolayer characteristic of the original bentonite to the S-shaped isotherm, reflecting the sodium polycarboxylate properties of SAPAS-Bentonite. Both bentonites demonstrated strong retention capacity for lead, with SAPAS-Bentonite surpassing raw bentonite in performance. This study provides valuable insights into the potential of SAPAS-Bentonite in the treatment of heavy metal pollution.

Efficient removal of aqueous ciprofloxacin antibiotic by ZnO/CuO-bentonite composites synthesized via carbon-bed pyrolysis of bentonite and metal co-precipitation

Xiaodong Yang,Xuefei Yang,Zhiyong Hou,Minghui Li,Shuaiqi Luo,Jin Zhao,Kai Wang,Yuanxia Guo,Pengkai Sun,Fang Tan,Yan Yan,Lulu Liu,Lili Wang,Ye Han,Fanming Zeng,Andrew R. Zimmerman,Bin Gao

Antibiotics are of emerging concern due to their widespread use, lack of adequate treatment, and for their potential to threaten human health and the environment. Here, a facile fabrication approach for synthesizing ZnO/CuO-bentonite composites was investigated via carbon-bed pyrolysis of bentonite followed by ZnO/CuO co-precipitation. Sorbents were synthesized using a range of bentonite pyrolysis temperatures, metal oxide contents, and ZnO:CuO mass ratios. The ZnO/CuO-bentonite composites exhibited diverse functional groups, excellent mesoporosity, and high specific surface area (135.0 m 2  g −1 , four times that of pyrolyzed bentonite-only control). Ciprofloxacin removal was maximized at a bentonite pyrolysis temperature of 450 °C, a total metal oxide content of 25 %, and a Zn/Cu ratio between 95:5 and 93:7, and this material had an observed experimental CIP adsorption of 451 mg g −1 and a calculated maximum adsorption capacity of 1249.3 mg g −1 . This excellent CIP sorption ability was attributed to its abundant surface active sites and multiple sorption mechanisms, including hydrogen-bond interaction, ion exchange, and electrostatic interaction. These results illustrate that ZnO/CuO-bentonite composite sorbents have excellent potential for use in environmental remediation and water treatment applications.

Th(IV) adsorption onto titanium tetrachloride modified sodium bentonite

Xiong Xiao Hong,Yuan Ya Hong,Huang Bin,He Min,Chen Huai,Luo Yi Chao,Zhu Ye An,Luo Tai An,Chen Quan Shui

Ti(OH) 4 and TiCl 4 modified bentonite (Ti–Na-bent) were applied in the removal of Th(IV) from aqueous solution. Effect of different factors such as pH, contact time, temperature, initial concentration of Th(IV) and efficiency of them for thorium adsorption are investigated. Ti–Na-bent showed high adsorption capacity (q m  = 231.37 mg/g) and quick adsorption kinetics at lower pH. The adsorption mechanisms involved are: (1) Th 4+ , [Th(OH) 4− n ] n + complexed on the outer-sphere of Na-bent and Ti–Na-bent. (2) Ion exchange between Th 4+ , [Th(OH) 4− n ] n + and exchangeable cations of Na-bent and the H on the hydroxyl group of Ti(OH) 4 . Ti–Na-bent manifested high adsorption capacity for Th(IV), good acid resistance and long-term adsorption stability.

Modified bentonite adsorption of organic pollutants of dye wastewater

Zhihui Huang,Yuzhen Li,Wenjun Chen,Jianhui Shi,Ning Zhang,Xiaojin Wang,Zhen Li,Lizhen Gao,Yuxin Zhang

Removals of Rhodamine B (RhB) and Acid red 1 using the organic modification of bentonite from aqueous phase were optimized. The organobentonite was synthesized by replacing exchangeable Na + ions in Na-bentonite (Na-Bt) with cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and systematically explored for its adsorption behavior as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of dyes. Batch adsorption studies manifested that the maximum adsorption capacity of dyes were found to be 173.5 mg/g and 157.4 mg/g for RhB and Acid red 1 at the initial concentration of 300 mg/L at 30 °C and pH 9 and 8, respectively. The investigations of adsorption isotherm and kinetics model showed that the adsorption isotherm data were fitted well to the Langmuir isotherm and the adsorption kinetic was better by pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Besides, the thermodynamic parameters indicate that the adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic. Furthermore, the properties of the obtained samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR) and zeta potential analysis. The results of the characterization provided evidence of the morphological properties and how well the adsorption process performed.

Carbon-covered Fe-pillared bentonite electrode boosting capacitive deionization

Yue Zhu,Hao Wang,Boshuang Zhang,Bin Hu,Yiwen Wang,Meng Li,Jianmao Yang,Jianyun Liu

Capacitive deionization (CDI), as an energy-efficient desalination technique, has attracted worldwide attention. Bentonite , a natural clay with 2-dimensional structure, is much popular for water treatment because of its high adsorption capacity , low cost and environmental benign properties. However, the poor conductivity and narrow interlamellar spacing limit its electrochemical application. In this work, a carbon-covered Fe-pillared bentonite (PILB@C) was fabricated as a new type of electrode materials for CDI. Through Fe-pillaring in bentonite, the interlayer spacing enlarged, accompanied with enhanced specific surface areas and abundant mesopores . The further carbon coating endowed the bentonite with good conductivity and facilitating ion-transportation. The dual-regulated composites possessed the negatively charged surface feature, favorable for inverted capacitive deionization (i-CDI) with improved deionization performance. Under the optimal carbon loading, the PILB@C electrode delivered a superior desalination capacity (16.23 mg g −1 , in 10 mM NaCl). Because of the intrinsic structural stability of bentonite, the desalination system exhibited the excellent cycling stability (90 % capacity retention over 50 cycles). When applied for industrial and domestic water purification , the PILB@C electrode realized salinity reduction and de-mineralization. This natural bentonite is nontoxic and cheap, rendering it highly promising as an electrode material candidate for future water treatment.
