Construction of Ternary Ce Metal–Organic Framework/Bi/BiOCl Heterojunction towards Optimized Photocatalytic Performance

Teng Gao,Hongqi Chu,Shijie Wang,Zhenzi Li,Wei Zhou

Photocatalysis is the most promising green approach to solve antibiotic pollution in water, but the actual treatment effect is limited by photocatalytic activity. Herein, Bi and BiOCl were loaded onto the surface of Ce-MOF (metal–organic framework) using an electrostatic adsorption method, and a special ternary heterojunction of Ce/Bi/BiOCl was successfully prepared as a photocatalyst for the degradation of tetracycline (TC). FTIR demonstrated that the obtained photocatalyst contains functional groups such as -COOH belonging to Ce-MOF and characteristic crystal planes of Bi and BiOCl, indicating the successful construction of a ternary photocatalyst. The results of UV–vis absorption spectra confirm that the band gap of Ce/Bi/BiOCl heterojunction is reduced from 3.35 eV to 2.7 eV, resulting in an enhanced light absorption capability in the visible light region. The special ternary heterojunction constructed by Ce-MOF, Bi, and BiOCl could achieve a narrow band gap and reasonable band structure, thereby enhancing the separation of photogenerated charges. Consequently, the photocatalytic performance of the Ce/Bi/BiOCl ternary heterojunction was significantly enhanced compared to Ce-MOF, Bi, and BiOCl. Therefore, Ce/Bi/BiOCl can achieve a photocatalytic degradation rate of 97.7% within 20 min, which is much better than Bi (14.8%) and BiOCl (67.9%). This work successfully constructed MOF-based ternary photocatalysts and revealed the relationship between ternary heterojunctions and photocatalytic activity. This provides inspiration for constructing other heterogeneous catalysts for use in the field of photocatalysis.

Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity of π-Conjugated Pyridine Rings-Modified C3N4/Bi@BiOCl Z-Scheme Heterogeneous Material

Wei Yang,Yanhua Gao,Mingli Cao

The enhanced photocatalytic properties of Z-Scheme Bi@BiOCl/C3N4-DPY heterojunction materials were successfully prepared by the ultrasonic-assisted coprecipitation method. The Bi@BiOCl/C3N4-DPY heterojunction exhibited remarkable photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation, and the degradation rate of methyl orange (MO) was about 90.6% in 180 min. This impressive efficiency is mainly due to the Z-Scheme charge transfer mechanism in Bi@BiOCl/C3N4-DPY, resulting in the efficient separation of charge carriers and an increase in the REDOX potential of photogenerated electrons and holes. C3N4 was modified with a π-deficient conjugated pyridine ring, which caused the light absorption redshift, promoted the formation of oxidizing •O2–, and improved the photocatalytic activity. At the same time, a well-aligned heterojunction is formed at the interface between C3N4-DPY and BiOCl, facilitating the seamless transfer of light-induced electrons from the LUMO of C3N4-DPY to the CB of BiOCl. In addition, the addition of Bi introduces a unique band gap reduction effect, resulting in a change in the density of the band states, which further promotes charge transfer and separation. It is worth noting that the introduction of metallic bismuth (Bi) brings about a unique band gap reduction effect, resulting in a change in the density of states within the band, which ultimately promotes charge transfer and separation. The Z-scheme charge migration inside Bi@BiOCl/C3N4-DPY further promotes the efficient separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs, greatly improving the overall efficiency of the material. The Z-structured photocatalyst developed in this study has great application potential in various fields of photocatalysis.

NaBH4-Reduction Induced Evolution of Bi Nanoparticles from BiOCl Nanoplates and Construction of Promising Bi@BiOCl Hybrid Photocatalysts

Yuxiang Yan,Hua Yang,Zao Yi,Tao Xian

In this work, we have synthesized BiOCl nanoplates (diameter 140–220 nm, thickness 60–70 nm) via a co-precipitation method, and then created Bi nanoparticles (diameter 35–50 nm) on the surface of BiOCl nanoplates via a NaBH4reduction method. By varying the NaBH4concentration and reaction time, the evolution of Bi nanoparticles was systematically investigated. It is demonstrated that with increasing the NaBH4concentration (at a fixing reaction time of 30 min), BiOCl crystals are gradually reduced into Bi nanoparticles, and pure Bi nanoparticles are formed at 120 mM NaBH4solution treatment. At low-concentration NaBH4solutions (e.g., 10 and 30 mM), with increasing the reaction time, BiOCl crystals are partially reduced into Bi nanoparticles, and then the Bi nanoparticles return to form BiOCl crystals. At high-concentration NaBH4solutions (e.g., 120 mM), BiOCl crystals are reduced to Bi nanoparticles completely with a short reaction time, and further prolong the treatment time leads to the transformation of the Bi nanoparticles into a two-phase mixture of BiOCl and Bi2O3nanowires. The photodegradation performances of the samples were investigated by choosing rhodamine B (RhB) as the model pollutant and using simulated sunlight as the light source. It is demonstrated that an enhanced photodegradation performance can be achieved for the created Bi@BiOCl hybrid composites with appropriate NaBH4treatment. The underlying photocatalytic mechanism was systematically investigated and discussed. Keywords:BiOCl nanoplates;Bi nanoparticles;NaBH4reduction;Bi@BiOCl hybrids;photodegradation performance

Combustion synthesis of Bi/BiOCl composites with enhanced electron–hole separation and excellent visible light photocatalytic properties

Meichao Gao,Dafeng Zhang,Xipeng Pu,Keying Ding,Hong Li,Tongtong Zhang,Huiyan Ma

Bi/BiOCl composite photocatalysts were synthesized by a simple combustion method. The structures, morphologies, optical, and visible-light photocatalytic properties of as-prepared Bi/BiOCl were characterized. Bi doping leads to red-shift in the absorption band and increased visible light absorption. The photocatalytic reaction tests in the degradation of the dyes of RhB showed that the loaded Bi nanoparticles could bring about a big increase in the photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation. The main reactive oxygen species and photocatalytic mechanism of Bi/BiOCl under visible light irradiation were discussed in detail.

Ni2+-assisted catalytic one-step synthesis of Bi/BiOCl/Bi2O2CO3 heterojunction with enhanced photocatalytic activity under visible light

Lingsong Wang,Huanshun Yin,Suo Wang,Jun Wang,Shiyun Ai

Bi/BiOCl/Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 heterojunction was prepared via one-step hydrothermal process under the synergistic catalysis of Ni 2+ , where Bi(NO 3 ) 3 was employed as Bi source, DMF was used as carbon source and reductant, NiCl 2 was adopted as Cl source and co-catalyst. The content of Bi, BiOCl and Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 can be adjusted by changing the reaction time, temperature, content of DMF and NiCl 2 . The doping of Bi enhanced the photocatalytic activity of BiOCl/Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 under visible-light. Bi/BiOCl/Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 presented photo-degradation activity for environmental pollutants of rhodamine B, sunset yellow and tetracycline, which were 13.01, 9.40, 1.50 times and 168.38, 10.90, 4.75 times higher than BiOCl and Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 , respectively. The improved photocatalytic activity was ascribed to the sensitized effect of Bi and BiOCl, the surface plasmon resonance effect and the heterojunction structure, which inhibited the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. The degradation mechanism for rhodamine B was discussed, and the decreased toxicity of the degradation products was demonstrated.

In3+-doped Bi/BiOCl/Bi(In3+)-MOF composite for accelerating photocatalytic elimination of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and genes under co-effect of nanoconfinement and reactive oxygen species

Zhengkun Yu,Yunlei Zhou,Xingyu Liu,Shuqi Gong,Tianyi Sun,Huanshun Yin,Jingting Kang

A Bi/BiOCl/Bi(In 3+ )-MOF Z-scheme heterojunction enriched with positive electric charges on the surface caused by In 3+ doping was prepared by a one-step solvothermal method. Photodegradation of antibiotics (tetracycline, amoxicillin, ceftriaxone), antibiotic-resistant Escherichia coli (AR E. coli ), the tetA gene they carried, and Fusarium graminearum was investigated. The experimental results showed that Bi/BiOCl/Bi(In 3+ )-MOF sample possessed efficient photodegradation activity, with a removal of 10 7.34 CFU·mL −1 against AR E. coli in 80 min, 83.0 % and 4.89 log 10 copies·mL −1 for tetracycline and tetA gene in 120 min, respectively. Zeta potential test and adsorption capture experiment confirmed that Bi/BiOCl/Bi(In 3+ )-MOF surface was rich in positive charges and had a strong nanoconfinement effect on negative-charged bacteria and ARGs, which shorten the time for the active substances produced by photocatalysis to come into contact with bacteria and ARGs, thereby improving the photocatalysis degradation effect. Finally, Bi/BiOCl/Bi(In 3+ )-MOF sample was applied and discussed for the removal of complex colonies from duck farm wastewater.

Construction of covalent organic framework evaporator based on Bi/BiOCl floating layer and its application in solar desalination and clean water production

Xiuling Li,Yanan Pang,Yongle Zhang,Bo Ge,Junchang Liu,Yuling Zhang,Limin Zhao,Guina Ren,Zhaozhu Zhang

Solar interface heating evaporators are widely used and have been able to obtain clean water vapor from sewage. However, the soluble contaminants remaining in the original solution were not removed, and the floating organic pollutants affect the steam production rate. In this paper, the superhydrophobic Bi/BiOCl with low surface tension is synthesized and loaded to the felt to construct the floating layer of the photothermal device. The floating layer collaborated with the filter paper hydrophilic layer and the Pyromellitic dianhydride-Tris (4-aminophenyl) amine covalent organic framework (PMDA-TAPA COF) photothermal layer to treat the sewage containing dissolved pollutants, achieving an interfacial evaporation rate of 1.47 kg⋅m −2 ⋅h −1 . Importantly, the floating layer not only has a contact angle of 161°, which can selectively adsorb the organic solvents floating on the water surface, but also can degrade the pollutants dissolved in the water under the light and solving the problems that hinder device applications. The valence band and conduction band potentials of superhydrophobic Bi/BiOCl are at 3.065 eV and −0.435 eV, respectively, which produce h + and O 2 – under light to degrade dissolved pollutants in water. The introduction of novel superhydrophobic Bi/BiOCl photocatalyst in the floating layer provides a reference for solving the problem of pollutant residues.

The enhanced photocatalytic properties of Bi/BiOCl composites for H2O2 production

Liran Liu,Hanping Fu,Yating Zeng,Li Feng,Tianxiang Zhang,Qingshuang Liang,Xiufeng Xiao

The development of high-efficiency economic photocatalysts for the production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is of great significance for solar-to-fuel conversion. Bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) shows great potential for photocatalytic H2O2 production, but the rapid recombination of electron–hole pairs reduces its photocatalytic performance. Herein, a series of Bi nanoparticle modified BiOCl (Bi/BiOCl) composites is constructed by an in situ chemical reduction to boost the spatial charge separation and transportation to enhance the photocatalytic performance for H2O2 production. Benefiting from the synergistic effects of localized surface plasmon resonance, the formation of Schottky barriers, and the in situ fabricated heterojunction that results in strong interfacial forces and tight contact, the obtained Bi/BiOCl composites exhibit enhanced photocatalytic capability for H2O2 production; the best sample can enable an impressive H2O2 production rate of 108 mmol g−1 h−1, which is much higher than that of individual BiOCl. The present work provides a clear understanding of the mechanisms of Bi nanoparticle modified BiOCl composites for photocatalytic H2O2 production, which will be useful for the development of catalysts toward solar-to-fuel conversion.

One-step solution combustion synthesis of Bi/BiOCl nanosheets: Reaction mechanism and photocatalytic RhB degradation

Yong Yu,Zhongxiang Yang,Zhichao Shang,Xiaohong Wang

In this study, Bi/BiOCl nanosheets were prepared by a rapid, cost-efficient and one-step solution combustion synthesis method using a mixed fuel (glycine and tartaric acid). Through thermometry and thermogravimetric analysis/differential scanning calorimetry (TGA-DSC), the combustion mode and reaction mechanism are analyzed. The reducing gas produced by the mixed fuel is a necessary condition for obtaining metal Bi decorated BiOCl , and the content of Bi in the composite can be regulated by adjusting the molar ratio of Bi/Cl in reactants. In addition, under visible light irradiation, due to the SPR effect of metal Bi, Bi/BiOCl composite photocatalyst shows better photocatalytic performance, in which the highest degradation efficiency of Rhodamine B (RhB) within 120 min is 2.6 times higher than that of BiOCl. Thus, the present study provides an economic and convenient method for the tunable synthesis of a high-efficiency catalyst for the degradation of pollutants.

Facile synthesis of three-dimensional WO3-x/Bi/BiOCl hierarchical heterostructures with broad spectrum driven photocatalytic activity

Yunfang Huang,Hui Xu,Dan Luo,Yuezhu Zhao,Yu Fang,Qiyao Guo,Yuelin Wei,Leqing Fan,Jihuai Wu

To improve the utilization efficiency of solar energy and separation of photogenerated carries, a novel three-dimensional (3D) WO 3-x /Bi/BiOCl hierarchical heterostructures with broad spectrum responsive photocatalytic activity have been fabricated through a facile solvothermal technique. The influences of varying loading of WO 3-x on the physical performances of the as-obtained composites were systematically characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscopy , X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, optical absorbance, photoluminescence and specific surface areas. The WO 3-x /Bi/BiOCl displayed a strong optical absorption from 250 to 2500 nm, and showed the superior photocatalytic performance in degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) than that of individual components. Among the as-prepared samples, the sample S24 with the appropriate content of WO 3-x displayed the best photocatalytic performance, which can photodegrade RhB with the efficiency of 100%, 100% and 96% under the UV light within 8 min, visible light within 3 min and near-infrared light within 120 min exposure, respectively. Furthermore, a plausible mechanism of the RhB degradation on WO 3-x /Bi/BiOCl photocatalysts under the near-infrared light irradiation was proposed according to the photocatalytic activity and radical species trapping experiments.

Ultrarapid degradation of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) by 2D ultrathin Bi/BiOCl@g-C3N4 nanosheets: Facet engineering and Bi surface plasmon resonance

Angzhan Li,Dayong Tian,Yao Guo,Xingling Zhang,Shaopeng Zhang,Liu Cheng,Li Wang,Yifeng Zhang,Ning Fu

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is currently regarded as a refractory pollutant. The development efficient degradation technologies remains a critical challenge owing to the strong stability of C-F bond. However, current photocatalytic approaches for PFOA degradation suffer from slow reaction kinetics. Herein, a series of ultrathin BiOCl@g-C 3 N 4 (BiCN) was prepared using a hydrothermal method, and their PFOA degradation performance was evaluated. The most effective photocatalyst (BiCN-2) achieved a 92.3% PFOA removal rate within 30 min (rate constant k  = 0.1059 min −1 ), with a corresponding defluorination efficiency of 24.8%. Specifically, the exposed (101) facets of BiOCl accelerate electron movement, whereas the BiOCl@g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction interface enhances the separation of photogenerated charges. Additionally, the metallic Bi nanoparticles acted as both electron bridges and sources of hot electrons via the surface plasmon resonance effect, further boosting the reaction. Superoxide radicals, photogenerated electrons, and photogenerated holes were identified as the main reactive species in the degradation reaction. Density functional theory was employed to determine the interaction mechanism between PFOA and the photocatalyst. This study provides insights into an efficient alternative for the photocatalytic degradation of PFOA.

An in situ photoelectroreduction approach to fabricate Bi/BiOCl heterostructure photocathodes: understanding the role of Bi metal for solar water splitting

Weiqiang Fan,Chunfa Li,Hongye Bai,Yanyan Zhao,Bifu Luo,Yongjun Li,Yilin Ge,Weidong Shi,Hongping Li

This paper presents for the first time a novel method of depositing plasmonic Bi nanoparticles on BiOCl nanosheets (Bi/BiOCl) via insitu photoelectroreduction, and Bi/BiOCl as the photocathode enabled solar water splitting in a TiO2–Bi/BiOCl photoelectrochemical (PEC) system. It is one of the challenges to understand the relationship between the PEC performance and the composite ratio of Bi/BiOCl, and the density functional theory calculation results show that charges obviously transfer from the Bi cluster to the BiOCl (001) surface. The structure of Bi/BiOCl photocathode has been successfully optimized, according to the current–potential curves and charge injection efficiency. The highly enhanced PEC activity could be attributed to the dual roles of Bi nanoparticles in enhancing the charge transfer and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect. More importantly, the optimal Bi/BiOCl photocathode achieved a solar hydrogen evolution rate of 2.4 µmol h−1 under full spectrum illumination (100 mW cm−2).
