The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of plasmonic metals is an effective strategy for enhancing photocatalytic efficiency. Herein, we successfully synthesized the SPR-promoted Bi/Bi 2 WO 6 heterojunction photocatalysts by in situ reduction of Bi 3 + in Bi 2 WO 6 nanosheets to plasmonic Bi via a facile solvothermal method. The size of Bi nanoparticles on the surface of Bi 2 WO 6 was adjusted by varying the solvothermal temperature. After 15 min of visible light irradiation, the Bi/Bi 2 WO 6 heterojunction with a suitable size of metal Bi obtained after solvothermal treatment at 160°C exhibited 100 % degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB), which was 2.3 times greater than that of the pure Bi 2 WO 6 . The excellent photodegradation performance of this sample can be attributed to the SPR effect of metal Bi, which enhances light absorption, generates active sites and species, and facilitates rapid carrier transfer. Additionally, the formation of the Bi/Bi 2 WO 6 Schottky heterojunction promotes carrier separation and minimizes the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Furthermore, a potential mechanism for the photodegradation process of the synthesized photocatalyst has been proposed. This work not only offers new perspectives on in situ fine-tuning strategies for Bi-based photocatalysts but also demonstrates the potential of low-cost metallic Bi as a viable alternative to noble metals for enhancing photocatalytic performance.

Improving the efficiency of photogenerated carrier separation by designing heterojunction photocatalysts remains an important challenge. In this study, TiO 2 nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning, Bi/Bi 2 WO 6 /TiO 2 heterojunctions were constructed by hydrothermal method, and verified by characterization techniques. The heterojunction had good photodegradation activity to sulfamethoxazole (SMX) under ultraviolet and visible light irradiation (96.4 % within 60 min). The enhanced photodegradation activity of Bi/Bi 2 WO 6 /TiO 2 nanocomposites can be attributed to the synergistic effect of S-Scheme mechanism and Bi metal plasma action. In addition, Bi metals can generate a large number of electron-hole pairs under the action of surface plasmon resonance (SPR). In addition, the influence factors such as pH, SMX concentration and catalyst loading were studied. According to the detected intermediates, the photocatalytic degradation pathway of SMX was studied. The results of free radical capture experiment and ESR show that ·O 2 – and h + free radicals play an important role in the decomposition of SMX. The cyclic experiments show that Bi/Bi 2 WO 6 /TiO 2 nanocomposites have excellent stability and reuse characteristics. Finally, the mechanism of photocatalytic degradation of SMX was described. This study provides a promising perspective for the preparation and development of S-Scheme heterojunction photocatalysts based on Bi 2 WO 6 .

This work successfully synthesized Bi@Bi 2 WO 6 with oxygen vacancies (OVs) through chemical etching and systematically revealed the coupling mechanism between OVs and piezoelectric effects. In the piezo-photocatalytic degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), the 0.1al-BBW sample exhibited the best performance, with an apparent rate constant of 0.05468 min −1 . ERS and PFM characterizations revealed that abundant OVs were introduced by etching, leading to lattice modification and improved piezoelectric polarization. According to density functional theory (DFT) results, the piezoelectric field optimizes charge localization at OVs, strengthens band coupling, reduces carrier recombination, and facilitates the activation of H 2 O and O 2 . Furthermore, Mott-Schottky results and stress-induced simulations (0–8 %) confirmed that both piezoelectric polarization and OVs contribute synergistically to energy band restructuring. Pathway analysis showed that 1 O 2 and h + were the dominant reactive species driving the two main routes of 2,4-DCP decomposition. Overall, this work offers mechanistic insights into OVs coupling with piezoelectric and presents a viable strategy for designing advanced piezo-photocatalysts with multifunctional capabilities.

Herein, a novel ternary Bi/Bi 2 WO 6 /amorphous Bi 4 V 2 O 11 heterojunction photocatalyst was first synthesized via a facile one-pot solvothermal approach using ethylene glycol as a reaction medium. In this ternary heterojunction system, highly homogeneous-dispersed metal Bi and Bi 2 WO 6 nanoparticles were supported on amorphous Bi 4 V 2 O 11 flakes. Because of the Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) efficiency of metal Bi nanoparticles, as-fabricated Bi/Bi 2 WO 6 /amorphous Bi 4 V 2 O 11 heterojunction photocatalyst exhibited a strong light absorbance capacity in the visible-light and near-infrared light range, which can be verified by UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra measurements. The Bi/Bi 2 WO 6 /amorphous Bi 4 V 2 O 11 heterojunction photocatalyst showed remarkably enhanced photocatalytic activity toward the photoreduction of heavy metal ion Cr(VI) and the photodegradation of MB under visible-light irradiation. The drastically enhanced photocatalytic activity in the ternary Bi/Bi 2 WO 6 /amorphous Bi 4 V 2 O 11 system could be attributed to the SPR effect of metal Bi and the promoted separation and transport efficiency of photo-induced charge carriers stemming from the construction of ternary heterojunction. Moreover, Bi/Bi 2 WO 6 /amorphous Bi 4 V 2 O 11 heterojunctions exhibited a good cycling stability for Cr(VI) reduction after 5 cycles. This study may be supply new insight into the fabrication of highly efficient and stable Bi 4 V 2 O 11 -based photocatalysts, and it is expected to have certain theoretical and experimental value in the design and exploitation of novel heterojunction photocatalyst. Bi/Bi 2 WO 6-x heterostructures has been successfully prepared by a facile one-step hydrothermal method. By maneuvering reaction time and Bi/W molar ratio of the precursors, we have been able to selectively introduce oxygen vacancy and metallic Bi into Bi 2 WO 6 nanostructures. The obtained Bi/Bi 2 WO 6-x heterostructures with more oxygen vacancy and moderate metallic Bi exhibit significantly improved photocatalytic activity for the photodegradation of bisphenol A (BPA) and its analogues due to its great ability for the generation of singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), which has proven to work as the main reactive oxygen species during photocatalysis. It is also found the 1 O 2 concentration is highly depended on and modulated by the content of oxygen vacancy and metallic bismuth. Besides, we also demonstrate that the obtained Bi/Bi 2 WO 6-x products display efficient photocatalytic performance toward BPA derivatives degradation and enhanced stability to resist the interferences in the water matrix.

The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect demonstrated by noble metal nanoparticles has been shown to significantly boost the photocatalytic activity of semiconductors under visible light. However, the high cost limits their practical use. Recent studies have found that bismuth (Bi), a non-noble metal, exhibits similar SPR properties. In this work, we developed a new synthesis method for Bi/Bi 2 WO 6 photocatalysts using a secondary solvothermal process. The metallic Bi was reduced in situ with tartaric acid as the reducing agent, while hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) served as a surfactant to control the morphology. The Bi/Bi 2 WO 6 heterojunction prepared with an optimal CTAB amount (0.02 g) showed much better light absorption, achieving 100% degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) within 15 min under visible light, representing a 57% improvement over pure Bi 2 WO 6 . Recycling tests confirmed the exceptional photochemical stability and recyclability. The high performance in RhB degradation can be linked to the SPR effect of metallic Bi, which improves light absorption, produces active sites and reactive species, and speeds up carrier transfer. Additionally, the formation of the Bi/Bi 2 WO 6 Schottky heterojunction promotes carrier separation and prevents recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. This study also offers a clear mechanism for the photodegradation process of the synthesized photocatalyst. Overall, this work presents a new and affordable strategy for developing high-performance photocatalytic systems, with great potential for practical applications in environmental cleanup and pollutant removal.

To optimize the performance of photocatalytic H 2 production, various effective strategies have been developed to design highly efficient photocatalysts, including morphology control, synergistic reaction design, and utilization of photogenerated charge carriers (PCCs). In this study, a highly efficient Bi-Bi 2 WO 6 /Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S (BBWO/ZCS) composite was synthesized by embedding Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S (ZCS) nanospheres into Bi-Bi 2 WO 6 (BBWO) microsheets through electrostatic self-assembly method. Although BBWO show poor activity in H 2 generation, it largely improves the performance of ZCS under visible light illumination. When the mass of BBWO is 3 % in the composite, BBWO/ZCS exhibited the highest H 2 production rate (28.0 mmol g −1 h −1 ), much higher than that of pure ZCS. Meanwhile, its apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) is high to 8.45 % at 400 nm. The design of the BBWO/ZCS composite not only improves the migration and utilization efficiency of PCCs, but also offers valuable theoretical insights and experimental references for the development of highly efficient photocatalysts.

Photocatalytic reduction of nitrate (NO 3 − ) to ammonia (NH 3 ) has garnered growing attention as a sustainable route for simultaneous nitrate pollution remediation and value-added ammonia synthesis under ambient conditions. However, its efficiency remains severely limited by the intrinsically high structural stability of nitrate anions and inefficient charge-carrier utilization. In this study, a Fe-doped Bi/Bi 2 WO 6 photocatalyst (H-Fe-B/BWO) is constructed via a facile hydrothermal method followed by calcination in a reducing atmosphere. The experimental results reveal that the optimized H-Fe-B/BWO exhibits significantly enhanced photocatalytic nitrate reduction performance, achieving an NH 3 production rate of 2.419 mmol g cat −1 h −1 with a high selectivity of 99.3% in the presence of ethylene glycol (EG), representing an approximately 4.5-fold improvement compared with pristine Bi 2 WO 6 . The remarkable enhancement originates from the synergistic effect between Lewis acidic sites generated by Fe dopants with unsaturated coordination environments and the surface plasmon resonance of metallic Bi, which collectively facilitates nitrate activation and improves charge-carrier separation and utilization. This work provides a rational strategy for designing efficient photocatalysts for selective NO 3 − -to-NH 3 conversion under environmentally benign conditions, contributing to sustainable nitrogen management and circular economy-driven resource recovery. Graphical The enhanced photocatalytic nitrate-to-ammonia conversion over H-Fe-B/BWO can be summarized as a cooperative process involving surface reaction chemistry and charge-carrier dynamics. Fe dopants introduced into the Bi 2 WO 6 lattice generate coordinatively unsaturated metal centers, which function as Lewis acidic sites capable of strongly interacting with nitrate anions through O-metal coordination. This interaction promotes nitrate adsorption and induces structural distortion of the NO 3 − species, thereby lowering the activation barrier for the initial N─O bond cleavage. Simultaneously, reductive calcination leads to the in situ formation of metallic Bi on the catalyst surface, which serves as a plasmonic component under visible light irradiation. The surface plasmon resonance of metallic Bi not only broadens the light-harvesting capability but also enhances local electromagnetic fields, facilitating the separation and migration of photogenerated charge carriers. As a result, photogenerated electrons are more efficiently delivered to nitrate species adsorbed at Lewis acidic sites, enabling a sustained multi-electron reduction pathway toward ammonia while suppressing competing reactions. The intimate coupling between nitrate activation at Fe-derived Lewis acidic sites and plasmon-induced charge utilization accounts for the high activity and selectivity observed over the H-Fe-B/BWO photocatalyst.
