Boron (B), a frequently utilized metalloid fuel, has been garnering growing attention due to its elevated calorific value. However, the inert oxide layer (B 2 O 3 ) on the surface of B powder obstructs the transfer of oxygen, resulting low combustion efficiency and long ignition delay time. In this study, a range of binary oxidizers BiF 3 -Bi 2 O 3 is developed to enhance the ignition and combustion performance of B by leveraging the synergistic effect of the shell-breaking effect of BiF 3 and the rapid reaction kinetics of Bi 2 O 3 . A comprehensive investigation is conducted on the influence of the BiF 3 /Bi 2 O 3 ratio on thermal reaction, ignition delay time, burning rate, and pressure output. The TG-DSC data indicate that the B-BiF 3 reaction exhibits superior gas production capability, while the B-Bi 2 O 3 reaction offers greater advantages in terms of heat release. Furthermore, the combination of binary oxidizers (10 wt.%-20 wt.% BiF 3 ) is more efficient in promoting the ignition and combustion of B than a single metal oxidizer. The B-BiF 3 -Bi 2 O 3 composite materials exhibit a remarkably high burning rate of 14.81 m/s and a rapid pressurization rate of 1622.45 kPa/s. The enhanced ignition and combustion performance of B-BiF 3 -Bi 2 O 3 composite materials arises from the synergistic effect between the reactions of B-BiF 3 and B-Bi 2 O 3 . This study illustrates that the combination of BiF 3 and Bi 2 O 3 , two types of oxidizers, is an effective method to improve the combustion efficiency of boron.

X-ray computed tomography (CT) has been widely used in clinical practice, and contrast agents such as Iohexol are often used to enhance the contrast of CT imaging between normal and diseased tissue. However, such contrast agents can have some toxicity. Thus, new CT contrast agents are urgently needed. Owing to the high atomic number ( Z = 83), low cost, good biological safety, and great X-ray attenuation property (5.74 cm 2 kg −1 at 100 keV), bismuth has gained great interest from researchers in the field of nano-sized CT contrast agents. Here, we synthesized BiF 3 : Ln@PVP nanoparticles (NPs) with an average particle size of about 380 nm. After coating them with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), the BiF 3 : Ln@PVP NPs possessed good stability and great biocompatibility. Meanwhile, compared with the clinical contrast agent Iohexol, BiF 3 : Ln@PVP NPs showed superior in vitro CT imaging contrast. Subsequently, after in situ injection with BiF 3 : Ln@PVP NPs, the CT value of the tumor site after the injection was significantly higher than that before the injection (the CT value of the pre-injection and post-injection was 48.9 HU and 194.58 HU, respectively). The morphology of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract can be clearly observed over time after oral administration of BiF 3 : Ln@PVP NPs. Finally, the BiF 3 : Ln@PVP NPs were completely discharged from the GI tract of mice within 48 h of oral administration with no obvious damage to the GI tract. In summary, our easily synthesized BiF 3 : Ln@PVP NPs can be used as a potential clinical contrast agent and may have broad application prospects in CT imaging.

The rechargeability of the lithium anode in lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries is an issue for this type of battery. In this work, we demonstrate a Li–S full battery comprising a protected anode scaffold and a Li2S cathode. The stabilized performance is attained by an on-site fluorination strategy, using BiF3 for the interfacial coating of the anode. Unlike previously reported LiF protective coating derived from the vapor/solution depositions, BiF3 nanocrystals would be lithiated on-site to the anode surface and server as the protective layer. The chemically inertial Li3Bi alloy can provide additional ion-conductive paths and stitch the LiF to form a seamless protective layer, thereby suppressing the dendrite propagation and parasitic reactions effectively. With the designed anode structures and compositions, the high-loading full battery (8.05 mg cm–2) can achieve an exceptional utilization of both sulfur (898 mAh gS–1) and lithium (1533 mAh gLi–1) over 200 cycles, marking a step toward cyclable Li metal batteries at a high capacity.

Boron (B) powders are widely utilized as energetic materials (EMs) due to high combustion calorific value, but the oxide layer (B 2 O 3 ) that adhering on active B core results in long ignition delay time and low combustion efficiency. For solving the negative influence of B 2 O 3 and promoting the combustion performances of B powders, a simple solvent-evaporation self-assembly (SESA) method was employed to guide B particles adhere on the surface of BiF 3 nanosphere, where BiF 3 nanosphere was synthesized by hydrothermal method and nitrocellulose (NC) was used as binder. Then the structural and combustion properties of prepared samples were characterized and investigated by various technical methods. The results reveal that B/BiF 3 /NC (NC: 5 wt%) exhibits the highest calorific value ( Q v = 15.85 ± 0.059 kJ·g −1 ) compared to B/CuO/NC, B/Bi 2 O 3 /NC and B/Co 3 O 4 /NC, which is 1.81 times that of original B/BiF 3 (8.74 ± 0.050 kJ·g −1 ). Moreover, B/BiF 3 /NC shows superior pressurization rate (33.82 ± 2.02 kPa·ms −1 ), moderate combustion process and adjustable combustion rate. This study offers an effective method to improve the combustion of B powders.

Pure n-BiF 3 is facilely prepared and uniformly loaded around μ-Al. • The n-BiF 3 serves dual functions: etching Al 2 O 3 shell and engaging in thermite reaction. • The n-BiF 3 significantly enhances the thermal oxidation, electric ignition, and combustion characteristics of μ-Al. • The effects of n-BiF 3 as an additive is positively dosage-dependent (1 wt% ∼ 5 wt%). Micron-sized Al (μ-Al) features high energy density and low cost, yet its surface alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) passivation film drastically limits energy release. In this study, pure nano-BiF 3 (n-BiF 3 ) was prepared by a mild chemical precipitation method. Al-BiF 3 composite particles with different n-BiF 3 loading were prepared by ultrasonic dispersion and vacuum filtration, and further composited with CuO and NH 4 ClO 4 (AP) to construct energetic composites, so as to investigate their modification effect on μ-Al. Structural characterization indicates that n-BiF 3 can be uniformly loaded around the surface of μ-Al without obvious segregation. Thermal analysis shows that n-BiF 3 releases fluorine-containing substances at high temperatures to etch the Al 2 O 3 shell. Adding n-BiF 3 at mass fractions of 1 wt%, 3 wt% and 5 wt% significantly improves thermal oxidation activity and oxidation weight gain rate by 46.5% ∼ 127.0% relative to untreated Al. Ignition and combustion tests demonstrate that n-BiF 3 effectively shortens ignition delay by 9.2% ∼ 12.8% for Al/CuO systems and by 24.6% ∼ 33.7% for Al/AP systems, shortens combustion time, raises the pressurization rate by 110.0% ∼ 490.0% for Al/CuO systems and 66.7% ∼ 416.7% for Al/AP systems, elevates system peak pressure and combustion temperature, and suppresses particle agglomeration. The above results reveal that n-BiF 3 has dual functions of etching the oxide layer and engaging in the thermite reaction, and the effect is enhanced with the increasing addition amount. This study provides a new strategy and experimental basis for the efficient modification of μ-Al. Download: Download high-res image (525KB) Download: Download full-size image

Despite their high energy density, lithium metal batteries (LMBs) remain hindered in practical applications by the intrinsic instability of the lithium metal anode. Owing to its high reactivity, lithium readily forms a fragile and heterogeneous solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), leading to nonuniform Li deposition, dendrite growth, and consequent safety risks and rapid capacity decay. In this work, a quasi-solid-state electrolyte (QSE) incorporating a BiF 3 -decorated metal-organic framework (MOF) is developed to stabilize lithium metal anodes. The BiF 3 nanoparticles confined within the MOF regulate the Li + solvation sheath through interactions with solvent molecules, thereby facilitating Li + transport and delivering an ionic conductivity of 2.0 mS cm −1 with an enhanced Li + transference number of 0.48. In addition, the QSE promotes the in-situ formation of a LiF/Li 3 Bi-rich SEI, which accelerates Li + diffusion, lowers the Li nucleation barrier, and enables uniform and smooth lithium deposition. As a result, lithium metal anodes exhibit markedly improved reversibility and interfacial kinetics. Li||Li symmetric cells achieve a high critical current density of 2.5 mA cm −2 and maintain stable cycling for over 4600 h at 0.2 mA cm −2 . Furthermore, Li||LiFePO 4 full cells demonstrate excellent rate capability and long-term cycling stability, retaining 92.2% of the initial capacity after 1500 cycles at 1C and delivering 72.6 mAh g −1 at 20C. A BiF 3 -MOF composite electrolyte is designed for lithium metal batteries. The BiF 3 nanoparticles within the MOF effectively modulate the Li + solvation sheath by interacting with solvent molecules and thus facilitate efficient Li + transport. Moreover, the QSE promotes the formation of a LiF/Li 3 Bi-rich SEI, which accelerates Li + diffusion, lowers the nucleation barrier, and enables uniform and easy Li deposition. Tb3+/Gd3+-codoped BiF3 nanoparticles were synthesized via a controlled, room-temperature co-precipitation method to address the critical challenge of low photoluminescence (PL) quantum efficiency in singly Tb3+-doped fluoride phosphors. Structural analysis confirmed a stable cubic phase (Fmm) with successful substitutional doping on Bi3+ sites. At the optimal 5 : 5 mol% Tb : Gd ratio, a quantum yield of 13.5%—a fourfold enhancement over Tb3+-only systems—was achieved. The mechanism of enhancement operates through two complementary, excitation-wavelength-dependent pathways: (I) Under short-UV irradiation (230–260 nm), Gd3+ acts as a sensitizer—harvesting photons via its 8S7/2 → 6IJ/6PJ transitions and transferring energy to Tb3+ via resonance Gd3+ → Tb3+ energy transfer, directly proven by excitation spectroscopy. (II) Under 365 nm excitation—where Tb3+ is the primary absorber and Gd3+ absorbs negligibly—Gd3+ enhances PL efficiency through a complementary crystal field modification mechanism: Gd3+ substitution modifies the local phonon environment around bulk Tb3+ sites, reducing the non-radiative depopulation rate of the 5D4 excited state. This is directly evidenced by time-resolved PL decay showing +65% and +87% elongation of Tb3+ bulk lifetime components (τ2 and τ3) upon co-doping. CIE chromaticity analysis confirms high-purity green emission. These findings provide dual-mechanism characterization of Gd3+/Tb3+ co-doping in BiF3, establishing a rational design framework for Gd3+-enhanced lanthanide phosphors.

Pure cubic phase and uniform BiF3:Ln3+ (Ln = Ho, Er, Tm)/Yb3+ nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by coprecipitation. The growth mechanism of BiF3:2%Er3+/20%Yb3+ NPs was proposed based on evolution analysis of the time-dependent morphology, in which BiF3:2%Er3+/20%Yb3+ was formed through the growth process of “nucleation to crystallization and Ostwald ripening”. The upconversion luminescence (UCL) properties and mechanism of BiF3:Ln3+ (Ln = Ho, Er, Tm)/Yb3+ under dual-wavelength excitation were also systematically investigated. The emission intensity of BiF3:2%Er3+/20%Yb3+ by dual-wavelength excitation (λ = 980 nm + 1550 nm) was 1.49 times more than that excited by 1550 nm or 980 nm individually. Furthermore, the properties of the bright white and multicolor UCL showed that yellow, purple, green, or pinkish light could be observed by controlling the doping concentration of Ln3+ (Ln = Yb, Er, Tm, and Ho), indicating that they had potential applications in backlight sources of color displays and security labeling. The temperature sensitivity of BiF3:2%Er3+/20%Yb3+ exhibited a downward tendency and its max value was about 0.0036 K−1 at 273 K. Cell toxicity tests showed that the UCNPs in phospholipid aqueous solution presented low cytotoxicity. Also, in vivo imaging and X-ray imaging revealed that the BiF3:2%Er3+/20%Yb3+ NPs had deep penetration and high contrast, which meant it could be used as a potential probe and contrast agent in in vivo optical bioimaging.

Broad spectrum response photocatalyst is crucial for making full use of sunlight and widely used in efficient photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes. In this work, upconversion luminescence boosted broadband photocatalysts based on BiF 3 :Yb 3+ , Er 3+ nanoparticles (BFY) and the carbon nitride doped with various masses of barbituric acid (CNB x ) semiconductor materials (BFY/CNB x ) were successfully designed and produced for photocatalysis in UV–Vis–NIR region. Compared with pure g-C 3 N 4 , BFY/CNB 0.5 composites have better photocatalytic performance attributed to the utilization of broadband spectrum energy and effective charge separation. After 30 min illumination by visible light , photodegradation efficiency of RhB reaches about 99.4% by using BFY-2/CNB 0.5 . A plot of C/C 0 versus time indicates that the BFY-2/CNB 0.5 can degrade about 64.7% of RhB in 80 min by NIR irradiation. Under simulated solar light, the sample of BFY-2/CNB 0.5 reaches a maximum degradation efficiency of 98.0% within 15 min. The strengthened photocatalytic activity is due to the synergistic effect of CNB 0.5 and upconversion materials. The active species utilized in the degradation process were examined using capture experiments. After four continuous photocatalytic cycles, about 94.0% of RhB solution is degraded. The photocatalytic mechanism of the composite photocatalysts is also analyzed in detail. The results indicate that the prepared BFY/CNB 0.5 photocatalysts have good prospects in the field of environmental remediation.

All-solid-state fluoride ion batteries (ASSFIBs) show remarkable potential as energy storage devices due to their low cost, superior safety, and high energy density. However, the poor ionic conductivity of F − conductor, large volume expansion, and the lack of a suitable anode inhibit their development. In this work, PbSnF 4 solid electrolytes in different phases ( β - and γ -PbSnF 4 ) are successfully synthesized and characterized. The ASSFIBs composed of β -PbSnF 4 electrolytes, a BiF 3 cathode, and micrometer/nanometer size ( µ -/ n -) Sn anodes, exhibit substantial capacities. Compared to the μ -Sn anode, the n -Sn anode with nanostructure exhibits superior battery performance in the BiF 3 / β -PbSnF 4 /Sn battery. The optimized battery delivers a high initial discharge capacity of 181.3 mAh g −1 at 8 mA g −1 and can be reversibly cycled at 40 mA g −1 with a high discharge capacity of over 100.0 mAh g −1 after 120 cycles at room temperature. Additionally, it displays high discharge capacities over 90.0 mAh g −1 with excellent cyclability over 100 cycles under -20 °C. Detailed characterization has confirmed that reducing Sn particle size and boosting external pressure are crucial for achieving good defluorination/fluorination behaviors in the Sn anode. These findings pave the way to designing ASSFIBs with high capacities and superior cyclability under different operating temperatures.
