The nanocomposites of Bi III /Pt nanoparticles (PtNPs) were prepared using an operationally simple method, in which Bi III spontaneously adsorbed onto the surface of PtNPs to form a submonolayer by the strong interactions between Bi III and Pt. The adsorption of Bi III on PtNPs was confirmed by electrochemical studies. Without PtNPs, Bi III did not adsorb directly on the surface of glassy carbon electrode. The specific chemistry resulted in high electrocatalysis performance of the obtained nanocomposites toward glucose oxidation compared with PtNPs alone because of the dual effects of Bi(III). On the one hand, Bi tends to bind OH − from alkaline solution and then to share it with the adjacent Pt atom. This binding leads to an increase in number of hydroxylated Pt centers, which are the active species for the electrochemical oxidation of glucose. On the other hand, Bi acts as a binder to cross-link PtNPs and to immobilize them on the surface of glassy carbon electrode. The fabricated Bi III /PtNP nanocomposites may have the potential applications in the areas of electrocatalysis or electroanalysis.
Bismuth has been attracting research interest in recent decades due to its unique properties. Especially, there is a great difference for bismuth between its surface and bulk material properties in which the surfaces are much better metals than the bulk. A ultrathin layer of bismuth was adsorbed onto platinum electrode surface by simple self-assembly. Compared with bare platinum electrode, two greatly increased oxidation peaks were observed at negative and positive potential area with the obtained Bi III -Pt electrode, where Bi 0 or Bi III tends to adsorb more OH which is shared by the below adjacent platinum atom to form a structure of Pt-OH with high electrocatalytical activity. The Bi III -Pt electrode gives high sensitivity and excellent linearship of non-enzymatic glucose sensing, showing potential application for fuel cell, electrocatalysis and electroanalysis.

In this paper, we first fabricated a nanoPt modified platinum electrode. Then through a simple method, the electrode surface was introduced with a submonolayer of bismuth that acted as an effective promoter. Cyclic voltammetry and other characterizations were employed. The obtained Bi III / nanoPt / Pt electrode exhibited two greatly increased oxidation peaks at negative and positive potential areas, respectively. The signals were far larger than that of platinum electrode because of the large true surface area of nanoparticles and the catalysis of bismuth adsorbed on platinum. In the presence of bismuth, the platinum active sites could combine with more OH - from bismuth hydroxyl to form a new active site for the oxidation of glucose. The prepared Bi III / nanoPt / Pt electrode given high sensitivity and excellent linearship to glucose detection and showed the potential application in the areas of electrocatalysis or electroanalysis.
A new electrochemical technique to detect hydrogen peroxide ( H 2 O 2 ) was developed. The Pt nanoparticles and Bi III were subsequently assembled on agmatine sulfate (AS) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and the prepared GCE–AS- Pt – Bi III was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with result showing that the flower-like nanostructure of Pt – Bi III was yielded. Compared with Pt nanoparticles, the flower-like nanostructure of Pt – Bi III greatly enhanced the electrocatalysis of GCE–AS- Pt – Bi III towards H 2 O 2 , which is ascribed to more Pt – OH obtained on GCE–AS- Pt – Bi III surface for the presence of Bi III . Based on its high electrocatalysis, GCE–AS- Pt – Bi III was used to determine the content of H 2 O 2 in the sample of sheet bean curd with standard addition method. Meantime, its electrocatalytic activity also was studied.
