Synthesis of Co3O4/BiOBr/BiOI Ternary Heterostructure and its Photocatalytic Degradation of RhB

Wang Bo,Huang Lin,Li Silan,Qi Liqiang

Rhodamine B (RhB), an alkaline cationic organic dye, poses a significant threat to natural water environments. In this investigation, composites of Co 3 O 4 and BiOBr/BiOI were synthesized and evaluated for degradation of RhB under visible light irradiation. The photocatalyst (CBB-2) with a 10wt% Co 3 O 4 composite exhibited superior degradation efficiency, achieving 99.5% within 80 min and maintaining robust stability over four cycles. Meanwhile, after 90 min of light exposure, the mineralization rate of RhB reached 57.23%. A suite of characterization techniques verified the successful synthesis of the dual type-II heterojunction in the composite catalyst and the reinforced interactions among its components, thereby enhancing charge separation efficiency and photoresponsive performance. Free radical quenching experiments elucidated the critical role of •O 2 - and h + as radicals in the photocatalytic reaction process.

Visible-light photocatalytic performance, recovery and degradation mechanism of ternary magnetic Fe3O4/BiOBr/BiOI composite

Jianhui Li,Fan Yang,Quan Zhou,Lijie Wu,Wenying Li,Ruipeng Ren,Yongkang Lv

The ternary magnetic Fe3O4/BiOBr/BiOI (x : 3 : 1) photocatalysts were successfully synthesized by a facile solvothermal method. The samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, EDS, ICP-AES, XPS, UV-vis DRS, PL and VSM. Nitrogen-containing dye RhB was used as a degradation substrate to evaluate the photocatalytic degradation activities of the samples. The photocatalytic performance of Fe3O4/BiOBr/BiOI (0.4 : 3 : 1) is superior to other Fe3O4/BiOBr/BiOI (x : 3 : 1). Compared with binary magnetic Fe3O4/BiOBr (0.5 : 1) prepared in our previous work, the Fe3O4/BiOBr/BiOI (0.4 : 3 : 1) has obvious advantages in photocatalytic activity and adsorption capacity. And the specific surface area (48.30 m2 g−1) is much larger than that of the previous report (Fe3O4/BiOBr/BiOI (0.5 : 2 : 2)) synthesized by a co-precipitation method. Besides, after 25 s of magnetic field, Fe3O4/BiOBr/BiOI (0.4 : 3 : 1) can be rapidly separated from water. After eight recycling cycles, the magnetic properties, photocatalytic activity, crystallization and morphology of the Fe3O4/BiOBr/BiOI (0.4 : 3 : 1) catalyst remain good. The possible photocatalytic degradation mechanism of RhB under Fe3O4/BiOBr/BiOI (0.4 : 3 : 1) photocatalyst was also proposed. The results indicate that the ternary magnetic Fe3O4/BiOBr/BiOI (0.4 : 3 : 1) composite with high photocatalytic degradation efficiency, good magnetic separation performance and excellent recyclability and stability has potential application prospect in wastewater.

Uniform flower-like BiOBr/BiOI prepared by a new method: visible-light photocatalytic degradation, influencing factors and degradation mechanism

Jianhui Li,Quan Zhou,Fan Yang,Lijie Wu,Wenying Li,Ruipeng Ren,Yongkang Lv

The binary BiOBr/BiOI composite photocatalysts with different molar ratios obtained via a simple one-step solvothermal method were investigated by using XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, EDS, TEM, HR-TEM, BET, UV-vis DRS and PL. The degradation efficiency of uniform flower-like BiOBr/BiOI (3 : 1) is best when the samples were used to degrade RhB solution under visible light irradiation, which is attributed to its uniform particle distribution and the largest specific surface area of 44.21 m2 g−1. Compared with the previously synthesized BiOBr/BiOI, the morphology and specific surface area of BiOBr/BiOI (3 : 1) have obvious advantages. The influence factors (pH, NO3−, Cl− and HCO3−) on the photocatalytic performance of BiOBr/BiOI (3 : 1) were explored. The recycling experiments demonstrate that BiOBr/BiOI (3 : 1) composite maintains high photocatalytic activity after eight recycling experiments, and its crystal structure and morphology do not change. In addition, a possible degradation mechanism was also ascertained by radical capture experiments, EPR and semiconductor structure analysis. All results suggest that the uniform flower-like BiOBr/BiOI (3 : 1) composite with high photocatalytic degradation efficiency, excellent recyclability and stability has promising application potential for the photocatalytic degradation of organic compounds in wastewater.

Construction of porous-hydrangea BiOBr/BiOI n-n heterojunction with enhanced photodegradation of tetracycline hydrochloride under visible light

Xiuru Yang,Zhi Chen,Wan Zhao,Chunxi Liu,Xiaoxiao Qian,Wenya Chang,Tao Sun,Cai Shen,Guoying Wei

Porous-hydrangea x%BiOBr/BiOI n-n heterojunction with ordered morphology was successfully prepared through a simple solvothermal process using Bi(NO 3 ) 3 ·5H 2 O, KBr, BiOI, and ethylene glycol as the precursors. The prepared x%BiOBr/BiOI (x = 2, 5, 10, 15 mol ratio) n-n heterojunctions exhibit enhanced photodegradation properties during treatment of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) under visible light irradiation. The highest efficiency at optimized x = 5 is 1.3-, 1.7- and 1.3-fold higher than that of the pristine BiOI, BiOBr, and commercial titanium dioxide (P25), respectively. The improved photocatalytic performance was assigned to the optimized charge-separation properties of n-n heterojunction. However, over-loading of BiOBr upon BiOI may restrain the access of light to BiOI, which could limit the light absorption. The active species have been investigated by trapping experiments and it was found that holes (h + ) and superoxide radicals (∙O 2 - ) were mainly responsible for the photodegradation of TC-HCl. Additionally, the structure and activity relationship were systemically investigated, and the formation of n-n heterojunction is discussed accordingly. The photodegradation of TC-HCl is proved to be a complete mineralization process and the reaction mechanism is also proposed.

Boosting Photocatalytic Nitrogen Fixation via In Situ Constructing Bi Metal Active Sites over BiOBr/BiOI Heterojunction

Kaiyue Gao,Haibao Zhu,Chengming Zhang,Xiaojie Song,Li Lao,Liping Ni,Jianli Chen,Congliang Cheng,Xiufang Wang

The main obstacles to the photocatalytic reduction of nitrogen are the low separation efficiency of photogenerated charges and the few activation sites for nitrogen. It is highly desirable to explore new strategies for improving the nitrogen fixation performance of catalysts. Herein, the Bi metal active sites are constructed on the surface of BiOBr/BiOI heterojunction by in situ reaction, which promote the absorption, activation, and dissociation of nitrogen molecules. Moreover, the existence of Bi metal and BiOBr/BiOI heterojunction enhances the light absorption ability and facilitates the separation and transfer of photogenerated charges. The theoretical calculation also demonstrates that the BiOBr/BiOI/Bi composite has excellent electron structure and electron transfer efficiency. So, the ternary BiOBr/BiOI/Bi catalyst shows excellent performance of photocatalytic reduction of nitrogen to ammonia. The nitrogen reduction rate is 221.9 μmol g −1 h −1 , which is 7.6 and 5 times higher than that of pure BiOBr and BiOBr/BiOI. The mechanism of photocatalytic nitrogen fixation of the BiOBr/BiOI/Bi is proposed based on the experimental and theoretical results. This study provides a novel method for improving the photocatalytic nitrogen reduction performance of catalysts.

Core-shell BiOBr/BiOI/MIL-53(Fe)-min double Z-type heterojunction for efficient and stable photocatalytic degradation from small molecules to microplastics

Shuyue He,Jincheng Dai,Gang Liu,Xiyu Song,Hongjuan Zhang,Ruyi Xie

The persistent accumulation of organic pollutants in aquatic environments poses serious risks to ecosystems and public health. In this study, a double Z-type photocatalyst BiOBr/BiOI/MIL-53(Fe)-min was successfully fabricated by a two-step solvothermal-hydrothermal synthesis method. Characterization revealed tightly stacked BiOBr/BiOI nanosheets uniformly coating rod-like the 2-methylimidazole-modified metal–organic framework MIL-53(Fe) (MIL-53(Fe)-min), forming a core-shell structure with intimate interface contact. The formation of a unique double Z-type heterojunction significantly inhibited the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and optimized the charge carrier transfer pathway. Meanwhile, the surface stacked catalyst nanosheets not only improve the utilization efficiency of photons, but also greatly increase the contact area between active radicals and reactants. Under visible light irradiation, BBF-20 composite photocatalyst demonstrated a tetracyclines (TC) degradation rate of 90.6% within 100 min, with 80.3% of its activity retained after five cycles. Notably, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microplastics achieved 56% weight loss after being treated by BBF-20 for 8 h. The main active species during degradation process were determined through quenching experiment and EPR tests. HPLC-MS analysis proposed the possible degradation pathways for TC and PET microplastics. Based on experimental results, a double Z-type heterojunction mechanism was proposed. This work presents a novel strategy for designing efficient photocatalysts to degrade antibiotics and microplastics in complex aquatic environments.
