Wenzhuang Wang,Xinhang Cong,Xuehan Zhang,Wenling Xu,Jianli Diao,Yongming Bao,Feng Guo

A heterojunction of bismuth oxybromide (BiOBr) and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) was synthesized via an in situ deposition method for the selective photocatalytic oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde without the need for additional oxidants. The optimized BiOBr/g-C 3 N 4 (2:1) sample demonstrated a significant enhancement in benzaldehyde production (36.08 %) compared to pure g-C 3 N 4 (15.48 %), with improved selectivity (64.06 % compared to 29.66 % for g-C 3 N 4 ) under mild conditions (atmospheric pressure, 20°C). Structural and photoelectric property analyses, along with DFT calculations, revealed the synergistic interactions between the two components, elucidating the charge transfer mechanism and the role of the S-scheme heterojunction in enhancing photocatalytic performance. Free-radical-capture experiments identified electrons (e-) and holes (h+) generated within the BiOBr/g-C 3 N 4 system as the primary reactive species responsible for the oxidation of benzyl alcohol. This study demonstrates the potential of the BiOBr/g-C 3 N 4 composite as an advanced photocatalyst for chemical transformations, showcasing its effectiveness without the need for additional oxidants.

Remediation of PAHs-contaminated soil by coupling Triton X-100 assisted washing and BiOBr/g-C3N4 photocatalytic process: Insights to the degradation mechanism and soil washing recycling

Yan Feng,Yue Tao,Jianhua Qu,Ying Zhang

A remediation strategy for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil was proposed that combined soil washing (SW) and photocatalytic oxidation. In this study, naphthalene (2-ring Nap), phenanthrene (3-ring PHE), and pyrene (4-ring Pyr) served as model pollutants. We assessed the efficacy of Triton X-100 (TX-100) in desorbing PAHs from contaminated soil and its impact on subsequent photocatalytic degradation. TX-100 achieved desorption efficiencies of 72.1% for Nap, 63.3% for PHE, and 52.1% for Pyr during SW. The desorption process of PAHs from soil showed strong closely dependent on TX-100 concentration. Furthermore, a BiOBr/g-C 3 N 4 -30% (BOB/CN-30%) photocatalyst was employed to decompose PAHs in both synthetic and real SW effluents. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy confirmed the generation of active species (h + , OH, and O 2 − ) in the BOB/CN-30% system. Based on the photocatalytic treatment of PAHs in the synthetic SW effluent, the reactivity impact of TX-100 on PAH degradation by BOB/CN-30% depended on the TX-100 concentration. Optimal TX-100 levels enhanced PAH solubilization and decomposition, whereas excessive concentrations formed dense micelles that obstructed PAH degradation. Moreover, the coupled system exhibited efficient recirculation in real SW tests, underscoring its potential as a remediation option for PAHs-contaminated soils.

Enhanced photocatalysis at water/toluene interfaces via amphiphilic BiOBr/g-C3N4 S-scheme heterojunctions for simultaneous production of benzaldehyde and H2O2

Tieliang Bai,Wei Chen,Runqing Zhang,Fuhao Yin,Mao Xu,Benxia Li

Coupling O 2 reduction and selective organic oxidation for photocatalytic coproduction of H 2 O 2 and value-added organic compounds (e.g., benzaldehyde) represents a dual-functional strategy to maximize solar energy utilization and economic benefits in chemical manufacturing. Employing water/organic biphasic systems for such reactions offers a sustainable solution to address the challenges inherent in conventional single-phase systems, such as energy-intensive product separation and uncontrolled secondary reactions. Herein, we rationally designed and synthesized an amphiphilic BiOBr/g-C 3 N 4 S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst (labeled as BOB/PCN-A) composed of hierarchically structured BiOBr and porous g-C 3 N 4 , which can stably localize at the water/toluene biphasic interface. This unique feature enables the formation of a quasi-Pickering emulsion under continuous stirring during the photocatalytic process, facilitating the simultaneous production and in situ separation of H 2 O 2 in the aqueous phase and benzaldehyde in the organic phase. The S-scheme heterojunction enhances visible-light absorption, promotes efficient electron-hole separation, and preserves the strong redox potential of photogenerated charge carriers. Under simulated sunlight, the optimized BOB/PCN-A photocatalyst achieves remarkable production rates of 2.29 mmol g −1 h −1 for benzaldehyde and 1.77 mmol g −1 h −1 for H 2 O 2 , with a 100 % selectivity toward benzaldehyde. This study showcases a green photocatalytic system that integrates synthesis and separation processes, offering promising implications for sustainable solar-driven chemical manufacturing.

Mechanistic insights into plasmon-mediated charge transfer in Pt@BiOBr/g-C3N4 S-scheme heterojunction for solar-driven water treatment

Jin Chen,Ke Li,Jie Yan,Suqing Qin,Yuzhao Ma,Xiaofeng Yang,Yanjun Li

Designing heterojunction photocatalysts with staggered band structures and optimal interfacial interactions constitutes a feasible strategy to achieve superior photocatalytic performance. Herein, we synthesized a Pt@BiOBr/g-C 3 N 4 S-scheme heterojunction via in-situ construction and photochemical deposition. Notably, Platinum nanoparticles (NPs), precisely deposited via photochemical reduction, extend light absorption into the visible-NIR spectrum through localized surface plasmon resonance (SPR) while acting as electron mediators to suppress recombination. Under simulated solar irradiation, the optimized Pt@BiOBr/g-C 3 N 4 S-scheme heterojunction demonstrates complete degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) within 10 min. Additionally, the photocatalyst showed exceptional degradation efficiency for organic dyes including methyl orange (MO) and rhodamine B (RhB). More importantly, the synergistic interplay between internal electric field (IEF) and the SPR of Pt nanoparticles collectively facilitates rapid charge separation while suppressing electron-hole recombination. This study offers a path toward highly effective photocatalysts engineered for practical applications and elucidates the activity enhancement mechanism through Pt incorporation in ternary heterojunction systems.

Hongying Fan,Lingjian Gu,Xingyu Wang,Yixuan Wang,Qing Yang,Haonan Wu,Su Zhang,Xiang Yu,Tianyi Wang,Xiaoyu Zhou,Chengyin Wang

To further improve the antibacterial performance of photocatalytic paper, a BiOBr/g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst was synthesized via a two-step method, involving calcination for g-C 3 N 4 preparation followed by a solvothermal process for BiOBr/g-C 3 N 4 composite formation. The BiOBr/g-C 3 N 4 photocatalytic paper was fabricated by loading sunflower stalk pulp with a self-made hot-pressing device. In the composite, BiOBr and g-C 3 N 4 form tight heterojunctions through close contact, facilitating efficient charge separation and enhancing visible-light utilization. The resulting photocatalytic paper exhibits excellent recyclability and strong antibacterial activity, achieving 99.99% antibacterial efficiency and extending the fruit preservation time by fourfold compared with the control group. This study provides a green and scalable approach for developing recyclable and biodegradable photocatalytic packaging materials with potential applications in sustainable food preservation.

Engineering an intimate BiOBr/g-C3N4 heterojunction with expanded graphite for enhanced photocatalytic antibiotic degradation

Tan Ye,Wu Xi,He Guoliang,Li Huilin,Zhou Jie,Tong Haixia,Yu Linping,Zeng Julan

With the advancement of the pharmaceutical industry and livestock farming, the increasing release of antibiotic-containing wastewater poses serious threats to both the natural environment and human health. Developing novel, efficient technologies to remove tetracycline from water is a critical priority. In this study, a ternary BiOBr/g-C 3 N 4 /EG composite was successfully synthesized via a one-step solvothermal method. Under optimal conditions, the composite achieved a tetracycline (TC) removal efficiency of 98.49% within 50 min of visible-light irradiation, with degradation rate constants 1.40 and 1.74 times higher than those of pristine BiOBr and g-C 3 N 4 , respectively. XPS analysis revealed that the introduction of EG effectively suppressed the photoreduction of Bi 3+ to metallic Bi 0 , confirming that EG acts as an electron trap and establishes strong interfacial electronic interactions. BET analysis showed that the ternary composite possesses a specific surface area of 60.0 m 2 /g, which is significantly larger than that of BiOBr (28.9 m 2 /g) and g-C 3 N 4 (37.1 m 2 /g), promoting active site exposure and pollutant adsorption. PL spectroscopy demonstrated a marked decrease in emission intensity for the ternary composite, indicating effective suppression of electron–hole recombination. Mechanistic studies, including radical trapping and EPR, identified ·O 2 − and h + as the primary reactive species governing TC degradation. The enhanced performance is attributed to the synergistic effects of EG: (i) its oxygen-containing functional groups anchor BiOBr and g-C 3 N 4 , preserving heterojunction integrity; (ii) it serves as an electron trap to accelerate charge separation; and (iii) it enlarges the specific surface area and provides a conductive network for rapid charge transfer. This work offers a feasible and innovative strategy for designing high-performance carbon-supported semiconductor heterojunctions for environmental remediation.

BiOBr/g-C3N4 heterojunction for aqueous-visible photocatalytic recovery of palladium from waste palladium/carbon catalyst

Qiongmiao He,Xing Cao,Shichang Sun,Qinhao Zhong,Rui Wang,Yaofeng Zhu,Rui Ma

Photocatalytic dissolution represents a promising alternative to conventional, highly toxic, and energy-intensive palladium (Pd) recovery technologies. However, achieving efficient recovery under visible-light illumination in aqueous solution remains a challenge. Herein, we constructed a visible-light-responsive heterojunction photocatalyst by in-situ growing BiOBr nanosheets on nanostructured g-C 3 N 4 . Under simulated sunlight irradiation (AM 1.5G, 100 mW/cm 2 ), the optimized BiOBr/g-C 3 N 4 achieved 88 % Pd dissolution from waste palladium/carbon catalyst (w-Pd/C) within 3 h, outperforming single-component catalysts. Free radical trapping experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis revealed that efficient separation and migration of photogenerated charge carriers at the heterojunction interface generated abundant reactive species. The photogenerated e − reacted with O 2 to produce •O 2 − , while h + reacted with H 2 O to generate •OH. Simultaneously, Br − was oxidized by h + and •O 2 − to form bromine radicals (•Br), which then combined to form Br 2 . These reactive species (•O 2 − , •OH, and Br 2 ) accumulated on the w-Pd/C surface and collectively promoted the oxidative dissolution of Pd. This study highlights the potential of combining heterojunction engineering with halogen coordination in sustainable metal recovery, providing novel insights and technical support for the green recovery of precious metals, with significant implications for environmental protection and resource cycling.

Oxygen vacancy-boosted 0D/2D BiOBr/g-C3N4 heterojunctions for efficient visible-light photocatalytic removal of 1-naphthoic acid

Yunlong Lan,Chao Deng,Qiaoping Kong,Chuanxi Yang,Bingrui Ma,Erling Zhao,Xiaoning Wang,Yongkun Wu,Liping Xiao

Nowadays, industrial wastewater contains abundant refractory organic pollutants, which seriously threaten ecological environment and human health. As an eco-friendly and efficient technology, photocatalysis is a promising approach for wastewater purification. Nevertheless, the rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers greatly limits the practical application of conventional photocatalysts. Introducing oxygen vacancies (OVs) into photocatalysts is an effective strategy to solve this problem and improve photocatalytic activity. In this study, we facilely synthesized 0D/2D BiOBr-OVs/g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction by a one-pot solvothermal method, which was composed of zero-dimensional (0D) oxygen vacancy BiOBr-OVs and two-dimensional (2D) g-C 3 N 4 components. The 0D/2D heterojunction exhibited enhanced visible-light degradation for the hazardous pollutant 1-naphthoic acid. And its removal rate by 0D/2D composites was up to 76.3% after 100 min of irradiation, which was 1.61 and 1.45 times those of 2D g-C 3 N 4 and 0D BiOBr-OVs. The noticeably increased removal efficiency of 0D/2D composites for 1-naphthoic acid was attributed to the rational utilization of oxygen vacancies to promote charge carrier separation. And the tight bonding between components also contributed to photoinduced carrier migration and exerted a synergistic effect for photocatalysis. Possible degradation pathways were proposed for the intermediates via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) qualitative analysis, and their toxicity was evaluated using the Toxicity Estimation Software Tool (T.E.S.T.). This paper provides an innovative approach for one-step manufacture of 0D/2D nanojunctions with oxygen vacancies, and advances to prospective organic photodegradation applications.

Synthesis of highly conductive carbon quantum dot-enhanced Z-scheme BiOBr/g-C3N4 heterojunction for effective photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride

Jin Chen,Suqing Qin,Xiaofeng Yang,Yueying Wang,Tai Yang,Meidan Que,Yuzhao Ma,Yanjun Li

BiOBr can effectively mitigate the ecological and environmental problems caused by pollution with antibiotics, and its photocatalytic properties can be improved by utilizing heterojunction structures and cocatalysts. In this study, the Z-scheme heterojunction ternary photocatalyst BiOBr/g-C 3 N 4 /CQDs (BCC x ) was obtained by using an uncomplicated electrostatic self-assembly process. The incorporation of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with high conductivity provided a conduit for charge transfer between g-C 3 N 4 and BiOBr. The loading density of CQDs on BiOBr/g-C 3 N 4 could be rapidly adjusted by changing the concentration of the CQDs precursor in solution. The presence of CQDs enhanced the absorption of visible light and inhibited the synthesis of photogenerated charge carriers, thereby resulting in a synergistic effect on the Z-scheme heterojunction and improving the photocatalytic properties under visible light. In particular, BCC50 had the highest catalytic performance, with a tetracycline pollutant degradation efficiency of 100% within 60 min. The degradation efficiency remained above 95% even after repeated use in five cycles. The principles of semiconductor energy bands and internal electrostatic field generation are applied to explain the photocatalytic mechanism responsible for tetracycline degradation using BiOBr/g-C 3 N 4 /CQDs.

Waste medical mask-derived carbon quantum dots enhance the photocatalytic degradation of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) over BiOBr/g-C3N4 S-scheme heterojunction

Shiyi Chen,Jialong Fu,Jianping Qiu,Guoju Chang,Shiyou Hao

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has increased the necessity of medical masks, and to date, many waste masks have been discarded without being reprocessed, causing environmental harm. PET, a commonly used plastic product, presents certain hurdles to its natural degradation. In this work, waste medical masks were converted into carbon quantum dots (MCQDs) with blue fluorescence emissions using a simple solvothermal process and then doped into BiOBr/g-C 3 N 4 composite material to construct S-scheme heterojunctions for PET degradation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that an interfacial electric field (IEF) was formed between g-C 3 N 4 and BiOBr. The findings demonstrate that the MCQDs, as a cocatalyst for electron transmission and storage, encourage S-scheme heterojunctions to further separate photogenerated electrons and holes. Levofloxacin (LEV) was used as a molecular probe to visually compare the catalytic activities of various catalysts. These catalysts with different photocatalytic activity were then used to degrade PET. The findings demonstrate that the degradation efficiency of PET over the BiOBr/g-C 3 N 4 /3MCQDs in seawater is 39.88 ± 1.04% (weight loss), which is 1.37 times higher than that of BiOBr/g-C 3 N 4 , and also better than those reported in most of the literature. Free radical capture tests, electrostatic field orbital trap high-resolution gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HRGC-MS), and ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS) experiments uncovered and briefly revealed the key products in the photocatalytic degradation of PET, as well as the relevant mechanism of photocatalytic degradation of PET. The degradation products are expected to become precursors for the further production of polymers and medicines, etc . This study offers fresh perspectives for the creation of innovative photocatalysts for the ecologically benign breakdown of PET, which helps to further lessen environmental damage caused by microplastics (MPs) and enhance resource sustainability.

Sensitive and selective detection of chromium (VI) via static quenching using a graphene quantum dots/bismuth oxybromide/graphitic carbon nitride (GQDs/BiOBr/g-C3N4) fluorescent probe

Yuankun Liu,Yeqian Huang,Yuanqi Cao,Xinxia Zhang,Ying Wang,Xing Li

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) poses considerable environmental and health hazards owing to its high solubility and mobility. Therefore, developing highly sensitive detection methods for Cr(VI) is essential. In this work, a multifunctional graphene quantum dots/bismuth oxybromide/graphitic carbon nitride (GQDs/BiOBr/g-C 3 N 4 ) fluorescent probe with excellent detection and removal capabilities was synthesized through integrated hydrothermal treatment, calcination, and coprecipitation. Optimization studies showed that maximum sensitivity was achieved at pH 7.5, a probe concentration of 2.5 mg/L, and a reaction time of 20 min. Cr(VI) induced selective fluorescence quenching at 436 nm, displaying a linear response (R 2 = 0.966) over the range of 0–200 μmol/L, with a detection limit of 24.84 μmol/L. The probe maintained > 90 % fluorescence stability under UV irradiation (365 nm, 180 min), high ionic strength (0.1 mol/L NaCl), and in the presence of various interferents (10 common metal ions and non-fluorescent dyes). Analysis of the nonlinear Stern–Volmer plot, EDTA-2Na-mediated fluorescence recovery, and lifetime measurements suggests a static quenching mechanism, in which the excited-state electrons of GQDs/BiOBr/g-C 3 N 4 interact with Cr(VI), driving a nonradiative complexation process. This study demonstrates a dual-functional material capable of simultaneous Cr(VI) detection and removal, providing a practical platform for environmental monitoring.
