Graphical BiOCl/BiOBr Z-type heterojunction plays a crucial role in promoting charge transfer and separation during the photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide production, and retaining the strong redox ability of electrons/holes on different active sites. The photocatalytic pathway of the BiOCl/BiOBr Z-type heterojunction is in the dual-channel route. Photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide production is considered an important technology for alleviating environmental problems and energy scarcity at present. In this work, a series of BiOCl/BiOBr Z-type heterojunctions were successfully synthesized by a facile one-step method. The successful formation of the heterostructure was confirmed through techniques such as XRD, SEM, HRTEM, FTIR, and XPS. Notably, the heterojunction exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance in hydrogen peroxide production. The best performing sample (BiOCl/BiOBr 2:8) showed the highest hydrogen peroxide concentration of 10.8 mmol/L. PL and EIS results demonstrated the crucial role of the heterojunction in promoting charge transfer and separation during the photocatalytic process, and retaining the strong redox ability of electrons/holes on different active sites. The free radical trapping experiments results and electron spin resonance spectra demonstrated that photocatalytic pathway of the as-prepared heterojunctions was in the dual-channel route, from both oxygen reduction and water oxidation. This work might provide a reliable strategy for photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide production via photocatalysis.

The establishment of Z-scheme heterojunction with ascendant redox ability presents a potential application prospect in the development of efficient photocatalysts for environmental purification. Herein, the Z-scheme Fe 3 O 4 /BiOCl/BiOBr heterostructure composite with preeminent retrievability was obtained using a facile solvothermal method. The various physicochemical properties of the acquired materials were explored through systematic characterizations. The Fe 3 O 4 /BiOCl/BiOBr ternary photocatalyst possessed excellent photocatalytic degradation efficiency (85%) towards tetracycline (TC) under simulated sunlight irradiation. Given the results of capturing experiments, superoxide radicals (·O 2 − ) and holes (h + ) made predominant contributions to the photodegradation reaction. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of Fe 3 O 4 /BiOCl/BiOBr was mostly resulted in the framework of Z-scheme heterojunction, which led to the efficient migration of the photoinduced carriers. In addition, Fe 3 O 4 /BiOCl/BiOBr exhibited good recyclability and stability while retaining its high photocatalytic activity. It was expected that this work would create a new opportunity to fabricate magnetically recyclable photocatalysts with Z-scheme heterojunction for efficient removal of antibiotic pollutants.

The inability to achieve the selective recognition of specific chiral molecules or polarized photons has significantly hindered the application of conventional photocatalysts in asymmetric synthesis. To address this challenge, we have designed and synthesized discrete chiral BiOCl/BiOBr hybrid semiconductors with multilevel chirality, ranging from atomic-scale lattice distortion to microscale fan-blade-like plates and geometrically chiral superstructures. These hierarchically chiral semiconductors enable the polarization-dependent photodegradation of chiral tetracycline (TC) molecules. Under dark conditions, the L-BiOCl/BiOBr hybrids exhibit stronger adsorption for TC than their D counterparts, which can be attributed to conformational energy differences. Strikingly, under right-, left-, and linearly polarized light (RCP, LCP, and LP), the L-hybrids achieve TC degradation rates that are 19.3, 12.0, and 3.3 times higher, respectively, than those of the achiral reference. A similar polarization-dependent trend is observed for the D-hybrids. Combined DFT simulations and circularly polarized photocurrent measurements confirm that this photon-selective asymmetric catalysis originates from the synergistic interplay of an atomic-level chiral structure, polarized-light response, and spin-polarized charge separation. Moreover, L-BiOBC0.33 and D-BiOBC0.33 exhibit the same polarized photon-selective chiral catalytic behavior toward the degradation of chiral ofloxacin. This work establishes a paradigm for designing efficient chiral photocatalysts with hierarchical chirality, providing a route for tailoring nanomaterials for selective light–matter interactions and spin-polarized catalysis, with potential applications in chiral synthesis and chiral nanophotonics.

Photocatalysis is a green approach to solving energy and environmental problems, and researchers are still pursuing high-performance photocatalysts . Although BiOX (X = Cl or Br) has a suitable bandgap and good stability, its photoresponse is mostly concentrated in the UV region. Conversely, SnS 2 has a wide photoresponse range but exhibits perceptible photocorrosion and poor stability. To exploit the advantages of both BiOX and SnS 2 , this study hydrothermally synthesized and introduced superfine SnS 2 (∼30 nm in size) into a BiOCl/BiOBr binary system to fabricate BiOCl/BiOBr/SnS 2 composites. Subsequently, the degradation performance of these composites in a Rhodamine B solution under visible light was investigated. Results show that the BiOCl/BiOBr/SnS 2 heterojunctions were successfully prepared and the composites exhibited the best photocatalytic performance with 6% mass fraction of SnS 2 (BiOCl-to-BiOBr mol ratio = 1:1). The formation of a double S-schedule heterojunction between BiOCl/BiOBr and SnS 2 not only accelerated charge separation and transfer but also broadened the photoresponse range and reduced photoelectron–hole recombination under full-spectrum irradiation. Loading a small narrow-bandgap photocatalyst onto a large photocatalyst provides an effective way to construct heterojunctions with excellent photocatalytic performance. The ternary photocatalyst presents a favorable photocatalytic stability, and its photodegradation rate is 4.6, 4.5 and 220.5 times that of BiOCl, BiOBr and SnS 2 , respectively.

One-step co-precipitation method was used to prepare the flower-like BiOCl/BiOBr composite materials (BOBCs) with heterojunction structures, in which various amounts of BiOBr were used to adjust the band gap of BiOCl and thereby improve its photocatalytic activity. Based on photocatalytic performance experiments, BOBC2, in which the molar ratio of BiOCl to BiOBr is 1:0.75, exhibited the highest photodegradation efficiency (90.5%) to remove ofloxacin after 100 min illumination. The cyclic utilization performance of BOBC2 under the same conditions was tested by a cycle experiment. It was found that its photocatalytic activity remained at a high level after three cycles. The composition and microstructure of the material were analyzed by characterization techniques including XRD, FTIR, XPS, and SEM. The optical properties and the degradation process of the material were studied by DRS, PL, photocurrent, and active species trapping methods. The reasonable mechanism for photocatalytic degradation of ofloxacin was proposed. Graphical abstract

In this study, we developed a highly active floatable photocatalyst by incorporating BiOCl/BiOBr heterojunctions with abundant oxygen vacancies (OVs) onto fly ash cenospheres (FACs) composites, aiming to enhance the efficiency of tetracycline (TC) removal. The physicochemical properties of resulting composites were analyzed using various characterization techniques. The findings demonstrated the uniform anchoring of nanosheet-array-like BiOCl, BiOBr, or BiOCl/BiOBr heterojunctions on the surface of FACs. Intriguingly, the BiOCl/BiOBr heterojunctions exhibited an increased content of OVs compared to BiOCl and BiOBr alone. The degradation experiments of TC revealed that the BiOCl/BiOBr@FACs composites displayed optimal photodegradability, which was further enhanced by the assistance of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Furthermore, through active species capture experiments and ESR analysis, we proposed a synergistic reactive mechanism that differed from single photocatalytic processes and traditional PMS activation. Active species such as h + , 1 O 2 , ·O 2 - , ·OH and ·SO 4 - were found to participate in the synergistic process of TC degradation, in which the presence of PMS promoted the production of ·O 2 - via OVs active sites instead of inhibition. Importantly, the immobilized BiOCl/BiOBr@FACs composites exhibited floatability on the water surface and were readily excited by visible light , making them suitable for reuse and practical applications. This study presents an innovative approach for designing recyclable photocatalysts and achieving efficient wastewater treatment with the assistance of PMS.
