In this work, we have synthesized BiOCl nanoplates (diameter 140–220 nm, thickness 60–70 nm) via a co-precipitation method, and then created Bi nanoparticles (diameter 35–50 nm) on the surface of BiOCl nanoplates via a NaBH4reduction method. By varying the NaBH4concentration and reaction time, the evolution of Bi nanoparticles was systematically investigated. It is demonstrated that with increasing the NaBH4concentration (at a fixing reaction time of 30 min), BiOCl crystals are gradually reduced into Bi nanoparticles, and pure Bi nanoparticles are formed at 120 mM NaBH4solution treatment. At low-concentration NaBH4solutions (e.g., 10 and 30 mM), with increasing the reaction time, BiOCl crystals are partially reduced into Bi nanoparticles, and then the Bi nanoparticles return to form BiOCl crystals. At high-concentration NaBH4solutions (e.g., 120 mM), BiOCl crystals are reduced to Bi nanoparticles completely with a short reaction time, and further prolong the treatment time leads to the transformation of the Bi nanoparticles into a two-phase mixture of BiOCl and Bi2O3nanowires. The photodegradation performances of the samples were investigated by choosing rhodamine B (RhB) as the model pollutant and using simulated sunlight as the light source. It is demonstrated that an enhanced photodegradation performance can be achieved for the created Bi@BiOCl hybrid composites with appropriate NaBH4treatment. The underlying photocatalytic mechanism was systematically investigated and discussed. Keywords:BiOCl nanoplates;Bi nanoparticles;NaBH4reduction;Bi@BiOCl hybrids;photodegradation performance

The combination of upconversion nanocrystals with a wide-bandgap semiconductor is an efficient strategy to develop near-infrared (NIR)-responsive photocatalysts. The photocatalytic activity of the hybrid structures is greatly determined by the efficiency of the energy transfer on the interface between upconversion nanocrystals and the semiconductor. In this work, we demonstrate the interface design of a NaYF4:Yb,Tm–BiOCl hybrid structure based on the choice of suitable BiOCl facets in depositing NaYF4:Yb,Tm upconversion nanocrystals. It was found that the selective deposition of NaYF4:Yb,Tm nanocrystals on the BiOCl(110) facet can greatly enhance the photocatalytic performance in dye degradation compared with the sample with NaYF4:Yb,Tm nanocrystals loaded on the BiOCl(001) facet. Two effects were believed to contribute to this enhancement: (1) a stronger UV emission absorption ability of the BiOCl(110) facet from NaYF4:Yb,Tm in generating more photo-induced charge carriers resulted from the narrower bandgap; (2) a shorter diffusion distance of photogenerated charge carriers to the BiOCl(110) reactive facet for surface catalytic reactions owing to the spatial charge separation between different facets. This work highlights the rational interfacial design of an upconversion nanocrystal–semiconductor hybrid structure for enhanced energy transfer in photocatalysis.

Layered bismuth oxyhalide nanomaterials have received much more interest as promising photocatalysts because of their unique layered structures and high photocatalytic performance, which can be used as potential inorganic photosensitizers in tumor photodynamic therapy (PDT). In recent years, photocatalytic materials have been widely used in PDT and photothermal therapy (PTT) as inorganic photosensitizers. This investigation focuses on applying layered bismuth oxyhalide nanomaterials toward cancer PDT, an application that has never been reported so far. The results of our study indicate that the efficiency of UV-triggered PDT was highest when using BiOCl nanoplates followed by BiOCl nanosheets, and then TiO2. Of particular interest is the fact that layered BiOCl nanomaterials showed excellent PDT effects under low nanomaterial dose (20 μg mL−1) and low UV dose (2.2 mW cm−2 for 10 min) conditions, while TiO2 showed almost no therapeutic effect under the same parameters. BiOCl nanoplates and nanosheets have shown excellent performance and an extensive range of applications in PDT.

The electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) for ammonia (NH3) synthesis is highly desirable yet still challenging. Catalysts, as the core component of electrocatalytic NRR systems, are a specific focus of research. In this work, we demonstrate that NRR active semimetal bismuth (Bi) ultrathin nanosheets (Bi NSs) could be prepared by means of the in situ electrochemical reduction-assisted exfoliation of BiOCl nanoplates (BiOCl NPs). Such a conversion, from semiconductive BiOCl NPs to semimetal Bi NSs, could create enlarged surface areas and bring about abundant under-coordinated Bi sites and accelerated electron transport capability. With these advantageous properties, the as-converted Bi NSs exhibit efficient NRR electrocatalytic activity in 0.1 M Na2SO4, achieving a high faradaic efficiency (14.14%) and NH3 yield (11.11 μg h−1 mgcat.−1) at −0.5 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode), as well as high NH3 selectivity.
