Insights into enhanced visible light photocatalytic activity of t-Se nanorods/BiOCl ultrathin nanosheets 1D/2D heterojunctions

Hai Huang,Changchang Ma,Zhi Zhu,Xin Yao,Yang Liu,Zhi Liu,Chunxiang Li,Yongsheng Yan

A novel multidimensional heterojunction, the 1D trigonal Se nanorods (t-Se NRs) dissociated from CdSe QDs germinating on the 2D BiOCl ultrathin nanosheets, was successfully synthesized via a facile hybridization method. Such unique nanocomposite served as an efficient visible-light-driven photocatalyst for the photodegradation of the tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) solution. The obviously enhanced photocatalytic performance compared with pure BiOCl was mainly attributed to the introduction of Se NRs, which greatly enhanced the optical absorption in visible-light region and suppressed the recombination rate of electron-hole pairs by steering the charges migrating in a special manner. Specially, t-Se NRs in BiOCl system played an integral and important role as holes transfer channels, impelling more photogenerated electrons of BiOCl to participate in the photocatalytic process. Reactive species trapping experiments indicated the main reactive species were O 2 – radicals, which were generated by the collisions of excited electrons and molecular oxygen. Meanwhile, the radically increased ESR peak of O 2 – radicals for the heterogenous materials demonstrated successful release of abundant high-energy electrons. This work could be extended to the design of other robust 1D/2D heterojunction photocatalysts in application to the environmental demands.

Optical and Photocatalytic Properties of Br-Doped BiOCl Nanosheets with Rich Oxygen Vacancies and Dominating {001} Facets

Qian Zhang,Wuyang Nie,Tian Hou,Hao Shen,Qiang Li,Chongshang Guan,Libing Duan,Xiaoru Zhao

Crystal facet engineering and nonmetal doping are regarded as effective strategies for improving the separation of charge carriers and photocatalytic activity of semiconductor photocatalysts. In this paper, we developed a facial method for fabricating oxygen-deficient Br-doped BiOCl nanosheets with dominating {001} facets through a traditional hydrothermal reaction and explored the impact of the Br doping and specific facets on carrier separation and photocatalytic performance. The morphologies, structures, and optical and photocatalytic properties of the obtained products were characterized systematically. The BiOCl samples prepared by the hydrothermal reaction exhibited square-like shapes with dominating {001} facets. Photodeposition results indicated that photoinduced electrons preferred to transfer to {001} facets because of the strong internal static electric fields in BiOCl nanosheets with dominating {001} facets. Br doping not only contributed to the formation of impurity energy levels that could promote light absorption but introduced a large number of surface oxygen vacancies (VO) in BiOCl photocatalysts, which was beneficial for photocatalytic performance. Moreover, the photocatalytic activities of these products under visible light were tested by degradation of rhodamine B (RhB). Because of the synergistic effect of the dominating {001} facets, Br doping, and rich VO, oxygen-deficient Br-doped BiOCl nanosheets exhibited improved carrier separation, visible light absorption, and photocatalytic efficiency. Keywords:BiOCl nanosheets;Br doping;surface facet;oxygen vacancies;photocatalytic performance

Programmable biological state-switching photoelectric nanosheets for the treatment of infected wounds

Weizhou Ren,Zefeng Lin,Youzhun Fan,Jun Xing,Guangyu Liu,Taizhong Xiao,Zhengao Wang,Zhengnan Zhou,Tao Zhang,Zhiguo Song,Peng Yu,Chengyun Ning

Recurrent bacterial infection is a major problem that threatens the tissue repair process. However, most current therapeutic strategies fail to deal with management of the overlap dynamics of bacterial killing and tissue repair. Here, in accord with the different responses of eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells to electric potential, we developed high performance photoelectric BiOCl nanosheets that dynamically switch between conditions that favor either tissue regrowth or antibacterial microenvironments due to light stimulated and bi-modal switching of their surface electrical polarization. In vitro assays demonstrate that, under light illumination, the mannitol modified BiOCl nanosheets show high relative surface potential and achieve robust antibacterial performance. Conversely, under dark conditions, the nanosheets exhibit relatively low surface potential and promote Bone Marrow Stem Cell (BMSCs) proliferation. In vivo studies indicate that BiOCl nanosheets with light switch capabilities promote the significant regeneration of infected skin wounds. This work offers a new insight into treating recurrent bacterial infections with photoelectric biomaterials for light controlled selection of alternative electrical microenvironments, thereby benefiting the capability for either antisepsis or repair of damaged tissues.

Synthesis of BiOCl nanosheets with oxygen vacancies for the improved photocatalytic properties

Yujie Cai,Dongya Li,Jingyu Sun,Mengdie Chen,Yirui Li,Zhongwei Zou,Hua Zhang,Haiming Xu,Dongsheng Xia

The square-sharped BiOCl nanosheets with oxygen vacancies were successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal route using xylitol as surfactant. The as-prepared BiOCl samples were characterized by Powder X-ray Diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Electron spin resonance (ESR). The as-prepared samples were phase-pure with the width and the thickness were about 50–400 nm and 20–50 nm respectively. Besides, the photodegradation performances showed the BiOCl nanosheets with 0.1 g concentration of xylitol (BOC-1) had the best photocatalytic activity under visible light due to its special polycrystalline structure, grain boundary and an optimum concentration of oxygen vacancies. The h + and O 2 − were the two main active species during the photocatalytic process and the possible photocatalytic mechanism was proposed.

Thickness-tunable solvothermal synthesis of BiOCl nanosheets and their photosensitization catalytic performance

Fan Tian,Yafang Zhang,Guangfang Li,Yunling Liu,Rong Chen

Bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) nanosheets with tunable thickness were synthesized via a facile solvothermal method. The obtained BiOCl products were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and nitrogen adsorption. It was found that the metal ions (Fe3+, Co2+ and Na+) played a significant role in modulating the thickness of two-dimensional (2D) BiOCl nanostructures. Compared with commercial P25 and commercial BiOCl, the as-prepared BiOCl nanosheets exhibited superior activity for photosensitization degradation of organic dyes upon visible light irradiation. Furthermore, the photosensitization degradation activities were strongly correlated with the thickness of BiOCl nanosheets. The thinner nanosheets demonstrated a relatively high activity for the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB). The enhanced photosensitization activities were ascribed to its low electron injection barrier and high electron mobility on the surface of BiOCl nanosheets, which was confirmed by transient photocurrent responses and electron impedance spectra of the samples.

BiOCl Nanosheets with (001), (002), and (003) Dominant Crystal Faces with Excellent Light-Degradation Ability

Yingxiang He,Jianmin Gu,Adan Li

Gray bismuth chloride nanosheets with a highly enhanced electric field intensity were prepared by a simple and efficient method. Their energy gap is reduced to 2.35 eV. The prepared nanosheets show high photocatalytic activity for the degradation of rhodamine B under visible light. The resulting samples were characterized by X-ray diffractometry, high-resolution scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, specific surface area analysis, electrochemical analysis, electron paramagnetic resonance, and UV–vis spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity of prepared BiOCl was evaluated by the degradation of RhB. The prepared BiOCl sample (0.5 g/L) could completely degrade RhB (10 mg/L) within 10 min, and its visible photocatalytic activity was 80 times that of the original white BiOCl. Superoxide radicals were the main active substance involved in organic degradation.

Synergistically boosting highly selective CO2–to–CO photoreduction over BiOCl nanosheets via in-situ formation of surface defects and non-precious metal nanoparticles

Siwen Gong,Gangqiang Zhu,Ran Wang,Fei Rao,Xianjin Shi,Jianzhi Gao,Yu Huang,Chaozheng He,Mirabbos Hojamberdiev

Hollow hierarchical BiOCl (BOC) assembled by nanosheets with highly exposed (001) facet is synthesized via a gas-bubble-template strategy. The as-synthesized BOC is further modified by thermal treatment in N 2 to in-situ introduce oxygen vacancies (OVs) and metallic bismuth (Bi 0 ) nanoparticles from the BOC lattice (Bi 0 /OVs-BOC). Thermal treatment in N 2 enables an intimate contact between OVs-BOC and Bi 0 nanoparticles, which is conducive to the transfer of photogenerated charge carriers. In CO 2 photoreduction test, the Bi 0 /OVs-BOCs exhibit almost 100 % selectivity towards CO, and some of the samples also have a significant increase in yield. For instance, BOC-250 shows about 24.82 μ mol∙g –1 h –1 CO 2 -to−CO photoreduction efficiency which is nearly four times higher than that of the BOC with high stability. It is found that suitable energy band structure and desirable intrinsic carrier mobility account for the substantial enhancement of CO 2 -to−CO photoreduction activity due to the in-situ introduction of OVs and Bi 0 nanoparticles. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations unveil that the decreased reaction energy, the weakened adsorption energy for CO, and suitable adsorption energy for H and OH of Bi 0 /OVs-BOC lead to high selectivity. This work sheds light on the synergistic effect of in-situ formed OVs and metal nanoparticles on enhancing the photocatalytic activity and selectivity of solar energy materials.

Citric acid modulated electrochemical synthesis and photocatalytic behavior of BiOCl nanoplates with exposed {001} facets

Yue Xu,Sichao Xu,Shuan Wang,Yunxia Zhang,Guanghai Li

Well-crystallized BiOCl nanoplates with exposed {001} facets were synthesized by a facile electrochemical anodic oxidation method. The thickness of the nanoplates decreases with increasing citric acid content in the electrolyte. The optical absorption edge of the BiOCl nanoplates shifts to a longer wavelength with citric acid. The BiOCl nanoplates obtained with citric acid show a high photocatalytic activity for degrading rhodamine B (RhB) as compared with that without citric acid. The photocatalytic activity of BiOCl nanoplates is higher in degrading RhB dyes than in degrading rhodamine 6G, methyl orange and methyl blue dyes. The superoxide radical and holes are the two major active species in photocatalytic degradation of RhB by BiOCl nanoplates. Citric acid can decrease the overlap in the layered structure of BiOCl and reduce the nanoplates thickness, leading to the increase in the exposure of {001} facets and the enhanced photocatalytic activity.

Efficient photocatalytic defluorination of perfluorooctanoic acid over BiOCl nanosheets via a hole direct oxidation mechanism

Zhou Song,Xuelin Dong,Nan Wang,Lihua Zhu,Zhihong Luo,Jindong Fang,Caihua Xiong

There remains a significant need for developing new photocatalytic system to degrade perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a typical persistent organic pollutant. In this study, highly efficient BiOCl nanosheets were prepared by a simple hydrolytic method and employed to decompose PFOA. The UV irradiation BiOCl system decomposed nearly all the added PFOA after 12   h, yielding a defluorination of 59.3% and a minimization ratio of 52.5%. The photocatalytic defluorination rate constant of PFOA on BiOCl was 16.53   μmol   L −1   h −1 , being 1.7 and 14.6 times higher than that on commercial In 2 O 3 and TiO 2 (P25), respectively. It was demonstrated the photocatalytic degradation of PFOA on BiOCl mainly followed the direct hole-induced oxidative pathway, and the PFOA degradation was positively correlated with the amount of oxygen vacancies in BiOCl. The oxygen vacancies not only acted as the electron scavengers to suppress the charge recombination, but also favored to bind PFOA tightly on the BiOCl surface through a special monodentate coordination, which is beneficial for the hole oxidation of PFOA.

Engineering Co Single Atoms in Ultrathin BiOCl Nanosheets for Boosted CO2 Photoreduction

Lulu Zhao,Huilin Hou,Shuo Wang,Lin Wang,Yang Yang,Chris R. Bowen,Jinguo Wang,Ziyi Liao,Dongjiang Yang,Ruifang Yan,Weiyou Yang

Despite the development of a range of photocatalysts for CO 2 reduction, the practical applications are significantly limited by low conversion efficiencies and their reliance on sacrificial agents, which are rooted in thermodynamic and kinetic challenges related to CO 2 conversion. Here, the engineering of Co single atoms in ultrathin single-crystal BiOCl nanosheets for boosted photocatalytic CO 2 reduction is reported. The engineering of Co atoms modulates the distribution of photogenerated charges at the catalyst surface, controlling key surface reaction dynamics and suppressing surface electron-hole recombination. This modulation also improves light absorption and enhances CO 2 adsorption and activation, leading to more efficient surface reactions. Notably, CO 2 is stably adsorbed onto the (001) face of BiOCl through a Bi-O-C(= O)-Co-O coordination unit, which lowers the activation energy for CO 2 reduction and reduces the formation energy of COOH − intermediates. As a result, the BiOCl photocatalysts achieve a CO formation rate of 183.9 µmol g −1 h −1 , when irradiated with a 300 W Xe lamp without cocatalysts or sacrificial agents. It represents an ≈13-fold increase compared to that of pristine BiOCl, and surpasses most reported Bi-based photocatalysts to date. Current work provides valuable insights into engineering of single atoms for developing advanced CO 2 -reduction photocatalysts.

Understanding size-dependent properties of BiOCl nanosheets and exploring more catalysis

Benxia Li,Liangzhi Shao,Baoshan Zhang,Renshan Wang,Mei Zhu,Xiaowei Gu

Investigating the dependence of the catalysis on the size and structure of materials is of great significance for exploiting catalysts with characteristics of high activity, low cost, and new property. Non-precious metal catalysts bear high hope to meet the increasing demands of industrial applications in a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way. In this work, we take size-controlled BiOCl nanosheets as examples, which are synthesized via a hydrothermal method by changing the reaction conditions. The BiOCl nanosheets were characterized in details to understand their size–property relationships, and were found to exhibit a series of thickness-dependent physicochemical properties, including specific surface area, light absorption , and the separation efficiency of photo-generated charge carriers. Moreover, this work demonstrates the first example that BiOCl nanostructures have very high catalytic activity for the reduction of nitrophenols by sodium borohydride , without any light irradiation . The high catalytic activity of BiOCl nanosheets was proved to be due to the metallic Bi 0 clusters that were produced by surface Bi (III) reduction. The catalytic activity increased greatly with a decrease in the average thickness from 106.42   nm of BiOCl(H 2 O) to 3.47   nm of ultrathin BiOCl, because the increased specific surface area provided more active sites for catalytic reactions . As a result, this work provides evidences for the size–property relationships of nanostructured catalysts as well as some inspirations for exploiting novel heterogeneous catalysis of BiOCl nanomaterials.

Ultrathin BiOCl nanosheet modified TiO2 for the photoelectrochemical sensing of chlorpyrifos

Yanni Luo,Yan Mi,Xuecai Tan,Quanyou Chen,Defen Feng,Chenhao Ai

A convenient photoelectrochemical sensor was constructed based on the synergistic contributions of an ultrathin BiOCl nanosheet and anchored TiO2 nanoparticles to detect the organophosphorus pesticide chlorpyrifos. As expected, the fabricated heterostructure showed a distinct improvement in photocurrent intensity compared with pristine BiOCl and TiO2. This remarkable enhancement may be attributed to the separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carries, which benefit from intimate interfacial interactions between the ultrathin BiOCl nanosheets and TiO2 nanoparticles. Based on the robust photocurrent signal, a novel PEC sensor was established for the sensitive and selective detection of chlorpyrifos. The as-fabricated PEC sensor demonstrates many advantages such as a wide linear range of 1–12 μM, a low detection limit of 0.11 μM, S/N = 3, and remarkable convenience, which provides a general format for chlorpyrifos detection in green vegetable analysis.
