A fish bone-like BiVO 4 film was successfully prepared in-situ on metal Bi substrate via a facile one-step hydrothermal method. The obtained BiVO 4 film exhibits excellent tetracycline photodegradation efficiency, reaching 89.7% in 240 min under visible light irradiation. Its quantum yield (6.3 × 10 −5 molecules photon −1 ) and kinetic reaction rate (7.80 μmol g −1 h −1 ) are better than most reported immobilized Bi-based systems. Finally, the formation mechanism was investigated, which suggests that OH − plays a vital role in forming BiVO 4 film by affecting the release of VO 3 − . The results of this study provide available means in the in-situ preparation of Bi-based photocatalyst film.

The novel photovoltaic effect mechanism has been consistently corroborated over the last decade, however, the low photocurrent density remains a significant impediment to its practical applications. In this study, an extra-large photocurrent density is achieved in the acceptor (A 2+ , A = Ca, Sr, Ba)-donor (W 6+ ) co-doped BiVO 4 (BVO) films prepared with a sol-gel method. A photocurrent density of 4.05 mA/cm 2 under 450 nm light illumination and a large detection rate of 8.4 × 10 11 Jones and 5.4 × 10 11 Jones for 365 nm and 450 nm are respectively obtained. The high photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) of 2.4 % is obtained in the Au/BVO/Pt sandwich structure under 365 nm (10 mW/cm 2 ) light illumination using Sr 2+ -W 6+ co-doped film, even if the light is obstructed by Au top electrode. A possible mechanism based on uneven composition formed by acceptor-donor ions is proposed to explain the enhancement of the photovoltaic effect in A 2+ -W 6+ co-doped BVO films. The composite ion doping engineering presents a novel strategy for improving the photoelectric conversion efficiency in single-layer films.

The development of efficient photocathodic protection system requires highly active and robust light-absorbing electrodes for promoting the electron transfer from the light-absorber to the protected metal. Herein, we present an extremely active and stable CoFe prussian blue (CoFe-PB) modified BiVO 4 film prepared by sequentially dipping the BiVO 4 film in K 3 [Fe(CN) 6 ] and CoCl 2 solution, which can realize the long-term protection of 304 stainless steel under simulated solar illumination. Particularly, the photocathodic protection process can be operated in a scavenger-free environment. Our mechanism studies reveal that the CoFe-PB overlayer acts as the hole storage layer which can effective extract the photo-generated holes from the BiVO 4 photoanode, and meanwhile works as an efficient catalyst that overcome the slow water oxidation barrier at the electrode/liquid interface, and thus greatly increase the electron lifetime, thereby enhancing the photocathodic protection capability. Our work provides a rather simple and effective design strategy for constructing semiconductor/electrocatalysts system for the underlying photogenerated cathodic protection application.
