In3+-doped BiVO4 photoanodes with passivated surface states for photoelectrochemical water oxidation

Xiaohui Zhong,Huichao He,Minji Yang,Gaili Ke,Zongyan Zhao,Faqin Dong,Bowen Wang,Yaqi Chen,Xianying Shi,Yong Zhou

BiVO4 is a promising photoanode material for photoelectrochemical water splitting, but its actual activity is hindered by the high energy surface states. Here, we report that In3+ can be used as a dopant to substitute the partial sites of Bi3+ in BiVO4 for modifying the surface states and improving the water oxidation activity of a BiVO4 nanoflake film. Among the In3+-doped BiVO4 film photoanodes, the 7% In3+-doped BiVO4 film shows optimal photoelectrochemical water oxidation activity. At 1.23 V vs. RHE, the 7% In3+-doped BiVO4 photoanode exhibits a photocurrent density of 1.56 mA cm−2 in 0.1 M Na2SO4, which is over 200% greater than that of the undoped BiVO4 photoanode. In3+-doping did not change the morphology, phase and band gap of BiVO4 obviously, but resulted in a positive shift of the flat band position and higher surface charge separation efficiency for water oxidation. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the surface energy of BiVO4 decreased after In3+-doping that involved more unsaturated electrons of the Bi atom in the Bi–O bonds, thus reducing the amount of exposed unsaturated Bi atoms and broken Bi–O bonds. Therefore, the enhanced water oxidation activity on the In3+-doped BiVO4 photoanode can be ascribed to In3+-doping that passivated the surface states of BiVO4 and thus inhibited the surface charge recombination.

Facile construction of a BiVO4/CoV-LDHs/Ag photoanode for enhanced photo-electrocatalytic glycerol oxidation and hydrogen evolution

Zhengzhe Xie,Xiaoyuan Liu,Pengpeng Jia,Yu Zou,Jiang Jiang

Replacing water oxidation by the thermodynamically more favorable glycerol oxidation reaction in a photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell is highly desirable, which can not only improve the energy efficiency of hydrogen evolution, but also produce value-added chemicals, given that glycerol is easily accessible as a major byproduct from the biodiesel industry. Herein, a BiVO4/CoV-LDHs/Ag photoanode has been fabricated via a simple electrodeposition and redox strategy, which exhibits excellent PEC activity toward glycerol oxidation. A high photocurrent density of 7.15 mA cm−2 can be achieved at 1.23 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode, in 0.5 M Na2SO4 solution with 0.1 M glycerol under AM 1.5G illumination, which is 2.7 times that of the pristine BiVO4 photoanode. The significantly enhanced PEC performance can be attributed to the narrowed optical band gap, and improved charge separation and injection efficiencies after surface deposition of CoV-LDHs/Ag on the BiVO4 photoanode. As a result, greatly improved hydrogen production efficiency has been achieved by coupling the photo-electrochemical glycerol oxidation on the BiVO4/CoV-LDHs/Ag photoanode, with the evolved hydrogen gas (123.5 mmol m−2 h−1) nearly double that when using the pristine BiVO4 photoanode.

The development of cobalt phosphide co-catalysts on BiVO4 photoanodes to improve H2O2 production

Yuntao Xu,Yanfei Cao,Li Tan,Qiao Chen,Yuanxing Fang

Photoanodic hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) production via water oxidation is limited by low yields and poor selectivity. Herein, four variations of cobalt phosphides, including pristine CoP and Co 2 P crystals, and two mixed-phase cobalt phosphides (CoP/Co 2 P) with different ratios, were applied as co-catalysts on the BiVO 4 (BVO) photoanode to improve H 2 O 2 production. The optimal yield and selectivity were approximately 9.6 µmol‧h −1 ‧cm −2 and 25.2 % at a voltage bias of 1.7 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (V RHE ) under sunlight illumination, respectively. This performance is approximately 1.8 times that of pristine BVO photoanode. The roles of the Co and P sites were investigated. In particular, the Co site promotes the breaking of one H O bond in water to form OH • radicals, which is the rate-determining step in H 2 O 2 production. The P site plays an important role in the desorption of H 2 O 2 formed from the catalyst, which is responsible for the recovery of fresh catalytic sites. Among the four samples, Co 2 P exhibited the best performance for H 2 O 2 production because it had the highest rate of OH • formation owing to its improved accumulation property. This study offers a rational design strategy for co-catalysts for photoanodic H 2 O 2 production.

Resorcinol-formaldehyde resin nanoparticles as surface charge transfer and separation sites for the improvement of BiVO4 film photoanodes’ performance in solar water oxidation

Gaili Ke,Binyao Liu,Feng Duan,Xiaotian Liu,Jinyu Wen,Bi Jia,Xiaoyan Liu,Huichao He,Yong Zhou

The poor properties of carrier separation and transfer on BiVO 4 surface are two major bottlenecks for nanostructured BiVO 4 photoanodes during solar water oxidation. Herein, BiVO 4 /resorcinol–formaldehyde resin (BiVO 4 /RFS) heterojunction films were prepared by coupling resorcinol–formaldehyde resin (RFS) nanoparticles on BiVO 4 films’ surface, and investigated as photoanodes for solar water oxidation. The light harvesting and electrochemical properties of the resultant BiVO 4 /RFS film was close to the BiVO 4 film, but its carrier radiative recombination was weakened significantly. Relative to the BiVO 4 film photoanode, better water oxidation activity, kinetics and stability were observed on the BiVO 4 /RFS film photoanode. The conduction and valence band potential of RFS nanoparticles were discovered to be lower than those of BiVO 4 , and the surface photogenerated holes and electrons could be directionally transferred to RFS nanoparticles and BiVO 4 film, respectively. The higher solar water oxidation performance on the BiVO 4 /RFS photoanode was mainly originated from the separation and transfer of surface carrier through the BiVO 4 /RFS coupling interfaces under AM 1.5G irradiation. The present work could provide inspiration in the design and development of similar heterojunction materials for solar water splitting.

Enhanced photoelectrochemical performance of nanoporous BiVO4 photoanode by combining surface deposited cobalt-phosphate with hydrogenation treatment

Yang Zhang,Dan Wang,Xintong Zhang,Ying Chen,Lina Kong,Peng Chen,Yinglin Wang,Changhua Wang,Lingling Wang,Yichun Liu

Improving charge transportation and interfacial charge transfer in semiconductor photoelectrodes are two critical issues for achieving high-efficiency photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Herein, a combined hydrogenation treatment and cobalt-phosphate (Co-Pi) deposition is reported to dramatically enhance the PEC performance of nanoporous BiVO 4 photoanode. Linear sweep voltammograms show that after the combined treatment, photocurrent density of nanoporous BiVO 4 photoanode is increased for ca. 3 times at 1.23   V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), and the onset potential is negatively shifted from 0.53   V to 0.23   V versus RHE. Combined photoluminescence, Mott-Schottky, open circuit potential, as well as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analyses reveal the synergistic effect of hydrogenation treatment and Co-Pi deposition on enhancing the PEC performance of nanoporous BiVO 4 photoanode, facilitating both charge transportation and interfacial charge transfer without aggravating charge recombination.

A dual-cathode photoelectrocatalysis-electroenzymatic catalysis system by coupling BiVO4 photoanode with hemin/Cu and carbon cloth cathodes for degradation of tetracycline

Ling Cheng,Tao Jiang,Kai Yan,Jianyu Gong,Jingdong Zhang

When photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) couples with electroenzymatic catalysis (EEC), effective utilization of electrons from PEC process for yield of H 2 O 2 plays an important role in the enzymatic catalysis. In the present work, we designed a novel dual-cathode PEC-EEC system for pollutant removal. In this system, BiVO 4 photoanode was prepared by electrodeposition for visible light-driven PEC process while carbon cloth was used as the first cathode for electrogeneration of H 2 O 2 and hemin/Cu prepared by electrophoretic deposition acted as the second cathode for enzymatic catalysis. The performances of the constructed dual-cathode PEC-EEC system were evaluated by decoloring Rhodamine B (RhB), which showed high decoloration percentage with acceptable stability and reusability. Further, the system was applied to degradation of tetracycline (TC), indicating that about 93.6% of TC was removed after 2-h treatment. A pathway for TC degradation in such a dual-cathode PEC-EEC system was proposed based on the intermediates determined by liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry in tandem (LC-ESI-MS/MS).

In situ modification BiVO4 photoanodes with ZnO quantum dots for booting photoelectrochemical water oxidization

Sui Meirong,Gu Xiuquan

In this work, a facile metal organic decomposition route was developed for synthesizing the ZnO quantum dots (QDs), which were then in situ deposited onto a BiVO 4 nanoporous films for enhancing its photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidization activity. The results shows that there aren’t significant changes in both the color and surface morphology of the BiVO 4 membrane after QD modification. Nevertheless, the ZnO/BiVO 4 photoanode demonstrates a maximum photocurrent density of 2.56 mA/cm 2 at a bias of 1.23 V RHE with simulated solar irradiation, which is almost 2 times higher than that of the unmodified BiVO 4 one. The enhanced PEC performance is attributed to the formation of type II heterojunction, which promotes charge transfer/separation. This work might shield light on enhancing the PEC performance of BiVO 4 towards water oxidization.

In situ growth of a TiO2 layer on a flexible Ti substrate targeting the interface recombination issue of BiVO4 photoanodes for efficient solar water splitting

Jiuwang Gu,Qitong Huang,Yufei Yuan,Kai-Hang Ye,Zilong Wang,Wenjie Mai

Unfavorable interfacial electron back-injection, sluggish surface kinetics, and poor bulk conductivity leading to remarkable recombination are the key issues which significantly hinder the solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of PEC photoanodes. In this study, Ti foil is employed as the substrate for fabricating BiVO4 photoanodes. Surface passivation of TiO2 is sophisticatedly designed to block interface recombination in solar water splitting for the first time, so that a significant two-fold increase in photocurrent and a large decrease in dark current are observed. In addition, to address the other two issues, CoOx oxygen evolution catalysts (OECs) and Mo/N doping are applied to increase the photocurrent density and applied bias photon-to-current efficiency to 5.04 mA cm−2 at 1.23 VRHE and 1.41% at 0.75 VRHE, respectively, under AM 1.5 G illumination, which suggests the great potential of integrating strategies to target specific issues in BiVO4 photoanodes.

Highly Active and Self-Healing Co-Doped BiVO4 Photoanode in Borate Buffer to Enhance Charge Separation and Water Oxidation Kinetics during Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Wanqing Fang,Li Fu,Ai Qin,Yimin Lin,Rongzi Xv

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting has become an attractive way to sustainable hydrogen production. Herein, a cobalt ion-doped BiVO4 photoanode (Co:BiVO4) is prepared by an electrodeposition-solution drop-casting strategy. Co:BiVO4 presents a three-dimensional coral sheet structure with Co3O4 particles on the surface. The surface will be covered with an ultrathin cobalt borate (CoBi) film after PEC testing in borate buffer. The photocurrent density of Co:BiVO4 reaches 4.45 mA/cm2 at 1.23 VRHE (2.46 times that of BiVO4). Co:BiVO4 also exhibits self-healing properties in borate buffer during the PEC test. The excellent PEC performance of the Co:BiVO4 photoanode is due to the synergy effect caused by Co doping. Some of the Co ions are doped into the BiVO4 lattice to increase the electronic conductivity. Excess Co ions form the Co3O4 co-catalyst on the BiVO4 surface to promote the water oxidation reaction. After PEC testing in borate buffer, the CoBi film covering the Co:BiVO4 surface acts as a co-catalyst to provide more active sites for water oxidation. The applied bias photon-to-current efficiency, charge separation, and injection efficiency of the Co:BiVO4 photoanode are 0.94%, 63.19%, and 87.73% (3.62, 2.39, and 2.95 times that of bare BiVO4). This work provides a wealth of insights into the influence of Co:BiVO4 on PEC water oxidation in borate buffer and demonstrates the self-healing function of the system.

Uniformly citrate-assisted deposition of small-sized FeOOH on BiVO4 photoanode for efficient solar water oxidation

Xianqiang Xiong,Chuanqun Zhang,Xiao Zhang,Liya Fan,Lujia Zhou,Yuxiao Chu,Weiya Huang,Chenglin Wu,JiangShan Li,Xiaogang Yang,Deman Han

Nanoporous BiVO 4 is a promising photoanode material for driving the photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting to hydrogen energy, whereas its performance is limited by the sluggish surface catalysis reaction. Herein, a facile citrate-assisted method was developed for growing uniform amorphous FeOOH overlayer on nanoporous BiVO 4 , which significantly improved the water oxidation kinetics and resulted in a remarkable photocurrent density of 3.33 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V (vs. RHE). The activity enhancement was even superior to the well-crystallized α-FeOOH and β-FeOOH modified BiVO 4 . The citrate serves as the bridging agent that not only optimizes the BiVO 4 /FeOOH interface facilitating the hole trapping/transport, but also inhibits the particle growth of FeOOH nanolayer and provides more oxygen vacancies to promote the water oxidation. We demonstrate that the uniform FeOOH overlayer acts as the hole storage layer and catalyst, which increases the potential drop in the Helmholtz layer and greatly facilitates the interfacial hole transfer. Moreover, the citrate-assisted modification method was proved to be a general strategy to improve the PEC performance of TiO 2 and α-Fe 2 O 3 photoanodes. Our work provides a simple and effective design strategy for constructing uniform semiconductor/electrocatalysts interface that can realize efficient solar-to-hydrogen conversion.

Excellent stability of molecular catalyst/BiVO4 photoanode in borate buffer solution

Meirong Huang,Zhiwei Huang,Hongwei Zhu

Solar-driven photoelectrochemical water splitting is a promising solution to energy problem. However, not-yet-available long-term stability of photoelectrodes inhibits their practical application. Introducing structure tunable, highly active and easily prepared molecular catalysts is an efficient approach to improve their stability and has recently attracted great attention. Nonetheless, the long-term stability is still challenged due to regeneration of molecular catalyst during stability test. Herein, tannic acid coordinated with Ni and Fe ions (TANF) molecular catalyst is immobilized on BiVO 4 photoanode for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Taking advantage of the regeneration of molecular catalyst, effects of buffer species on activity, stability and regeneration of TANF/BiVO 4 photoanodes are investigated. In an optimal borate electrolyte, the TANF/BiVO 4 photoanode shows nearly no-decay after operating at harsh conditions (at 1.2 V RHE with continuous light illumination) for 62 h. The long-term stability profits from the regenerated catalyst, which is composed of a carbon conductive network with metal oxides/hydroxides as OER-active sites. This excellent stability of the integrated photoanode surpasses most of existing OEC/BiVO 4 photoanodes, and the stabilized catalyst is comparable with the state-of-the-art FeOOH/NiOOH dual-cocatalyst and ferrihydrite catalyst.

Solar water oxidation using TaON–BiVO4 photoanodes functionalized with WO3

Tingting Wei,Zhanbin Jin,Fengyan Li,Zhixia Sun,Lin Xu

Efficient solar-powered water oxidation over BiVO4-based anodes requires coupling photoactive semiconductors to improve inferior activity and stability. Herein, we examine how functionalization with coated tungsten trioxide WO3 affects the photoelectrocatalytic performance of TaON–BiVO4 photoanodes prepared by the doctor-blade method. The effects of the formation of the particularly-porous microstructure and PEC performance of the resulting anodes are explored. Significant enhancements were achieved in water oxidation photocurrent densities at 1.23 V (vs. RHE) with the use of TaON–BiVO4/WO3 photoanodes compared to unmodified TaON–BiVO4. All the composites and photoanodes were studied via numerous characterization methods. Besides, the formation process and probable transfer mechanism of photoinduced carriers were also investigated in detail.
