A steel slag–derived Boudouard reaction catalyst for improved performance of direct carbon solid oxide fuel cells

Yong Jiao,Chongyang Wang,Liqin Zhang,Wenting An,Na Zhou,Guangming Yang,Wei Wang,Wei Zhou,Si-Dian Li

Summary Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) can directly utilize solid carbon as fuel by integrating with the reverse Boudouard reaction in the anode chamber. Efficiency of the Boudouard gasification of solid carbon fuel is one of the crucial factors influencing the performance of direct carbon SOFCs (DC-SOFCs). In this paper, a novel Boudouard reaction catalyst derived from steel slag was first introduced into DC-SOFCs for improving the electrochemical performance. The catalytic activity of the steel slag was activated using the molten alkali method to decompose the inert mineral phases of the raw material. The steel slag–derived catalyst was loaded on the activated charcoal by a wet ball milling method. This kind of catalyst can match up to the readily available solid carbon fuels in cost. Promoted by this highly active Boudouard reaction catalyst, the initial Boudouard gasification temperature of the carbon fuel decreased by 99°C, and the producing rate of carbon monoxide doubled. Furthermore, the power outputs of the fuel cells increased from 91 to 159 mW cm −2 , and the fuel utilization increased from 17.10% to 46.43% at 825°C. This study demonstrates that the steel slag–derived catalyst is a promising material for the performance improvement of DC-SOFCs and may make a valuable contribution to their commercial application.

High-temperature CO2 capture and in-situ conversion over bifunctional Na2ZrO3 self-catalyst/sorbent for circular CO production

Ke Wang,Pengfei Zhao,Ting Zhou,Yanjun Wu,Tianyu Wang,Paul S. Fennell,Edward J. Anthony

CO 2 capture and utilization to produce value-added fuels and chemicals offers a promising avenue to assist in the mitigation of the global warming crisis. However, there are economic challenges for the regeneration of some sorbents used in CO 2 capture, owing to sorbent sintering and high energy requirements, while direct conversion processes are hindered by the lack of cost-effective, efficient, selective, and stable catalysts. We demonstrate the use of sodium zirconate-looping (NaL) with the reverse-Boudouard (RB) reaction enabling high-temperature CO 2 capture and in-situ CO 2 conversion operating in a single isothermal reactor operating at 800 °C. While employing a mild combustion synthesis method, the dual-function material Na 2 ZrO 3 exhibited a high and stable CO 2 uptake capacity of 4.9 mmol CO 2 /g without the use of Ni catalysts. This is due to its fine particle size, macroporous structure, and well-dispersed ZrO 2 stabilizer within the Na 2 O matrix. The resulting Na 2 CO 3 -ZrO 2 and regenerated Na 2 ZrO 3 phases (as synergistic self-catalysts) mixed with renewable and cost-effective biochar (as a reductant) facilitated exceptional in-situ CO 2 conversion efficiency (~90 %), as well as high CO selectivity (approaching 100 %), and relative stability (~80 %) even after multiple cycles. Importantly, theoretical calculations aligned with mechanistic studies revealed that the activation energy barriers at two specific oxygen sites for the monatomic C-assisted CO 2 dissociation/gasification were lower than the desorption energy of CO 2 on the Na 2 ZrO 3 (101) surface, demonstrating the self-catalytic mechanism. Thus, this cost-effective and energy-efficient strategy provides a compelling prospect to make local emissions from large stationary sources CO 2 neutral without requiring carbon sequestration.

Performance improvement of a direct carbon solid oxide fuel cell via strontium-catalyzed carbon gasification

Fangyong Yu,Tingting Han,Yishang Wang,Yujiao Xie,Jinjin Zhang,Haibin Sun,Jie Xiao,Naitao Yang

As a new way of power generation , direct carbon solid oxide fuel cells (DC-SOFCs) exhibit great potential in solution of energy crisis and environmental pollution. According to the working principle, the cell operation is a kinetically controlled process, and the reverse Boudouard reaction is the rate-determining step of the whole system. In this study, a Sr-based catalyst is successfully introduced to accelerate carbon gasification and thus enhance cell performance of DC-SOFCs. The electrochemical performance of DC-SOFCs operated on coconut active charcoal with various Sr loading contents (3 wt%–10 wt%), are studied and compared with that of DC-SOFCs with traditional Fe-catalyzed carbon fuel. Experimental results demonstrate that the best output of 316 mW cm −2 is achieved from the single cell powered with 5 wt% Sr-loaded coconut active charcoal at 850 °C, higher than those of DC-SOFCs fueled by pure and 5 wt% Fe-loaded active charcoal. The superiority of the Sr-based catalyst is also demonstrated by the operation stability of the corresponding DC-SOFC, which displays a relatively long operation time of 22.68 h at 0.25 A cm −2 with the fuel utilization of 18.3%. The SEM/EDX results indicate that the Sr-based catalyst exhibits good stability without agglomeration during cell operation at high temperature. In addition, the carbon gasification mechanism catalyzed by Sr-based catalyst is also proposed on the basis of these properties. This study indicates that the designed Sr-loaded coconut active charcoal is expected to be an alternative carbon fuel for DC-SOFCs.

A high-performance direct carbon solid oxide fuel cell powered by barium-based catalyst-loaded biochar derived from sunflower seed shell

Tingting Han,Yuxi Wu,Lin Li,Ziheng Xie,Yujiao Xie,Jinjin Zhang,Xiuxia Meng,Fangyong Yu,Naitao Yang

Direct carbon solid oxide fuel cell (DC-SOFC) is one of the most attractive thesises for clean and efficient utilization of solid carbon to produce electricity. According to the operating principle, DC-SOFC performance is closely associated with the carbon sources and catalysts of the reverse Boudouard reaction . Here, we report a high-performance DC-SOFC powered by the biochar derived from sunflower seed shell (SSS) with barium-based catalyst loaded. The physicochemical properties of the SSS biochar are characterized and analyzed detailly. The electrolyte-supported symmetrical SOFC fueled with the SSS biochar gives an output of 216 mW cm −2  at 850 °C, indicating a great potential of the SSS biochar for DC-SOFCs. More importantly, the best output of 265 mW cm −2 and open circuit voltage of 1.03 V are obtained from DC-SOFC operated on 5 wt% barium-loaded SSS biochar, which is comparable to the output of 273 mW cm −2 from the hydrogen-fueled SOFC at 850 °C with the identical configuration. The superiorities of the SSS biochar and barium-based catalyst are also reflected in the operation stability and fuel utilization of DC-SOFCs. The discharge platforms are stable and the longest lifetime is up to 28.0 h under 50 mA with the fuel utilization of 31.3%, which is very excellent and competitive. This work provides a new idea for the effective utilization of the SSS biochar and other biomass for DC-SOFCs.

Electrochemical gas–electricity cogeneration through direct carbon solid oxide fuel cells

Yongmin Xie,Weizi Cai,Jie Xiao,Yubao Tang,Jiang Liu,Meilin Liu

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), with yttrium stabilized zirconia (YSZ) as electrolyte, composite of strontium-doped lanthanum manganate (LSM) and YSZ as cathode, and cermet of silver and gadolinium-doped ceria (GDC) as anode, are prepared and tested with 5wt% Fe-loaded activated carbon as fuel and ambient air as oxidant. It is found that electricity and CO gas can be cogenerated in the direct carbon SOFCs through the electrochemical oxidation of CO and the Boudouard reaction . The gas–electricity cogeneration performances are investigated by taking the operating time of the DC-SOFCs as a measure of rate decrease of the Boudouard reaction. Three single cells and a two-cell-stack are tested and characterized in terms of electrical power output , CO production rate, electrical conversion efficiency, and overall conversion efficiency. It turns out that a rapid rate of the Boudouard reaction is necessary for getting high electrical power and CO production. Taking the emitted CO as part of the power output, an overall efficiency of 76.5% for the single cell, and of 72.5% for the stack, is obtained.

High efficiency electricity and gas cogeneration through direct carbon solid oxide fuel cell with cotton stalk biochar

Xiaofeng Gu,Xiaomin Yan,Mingyang Zhou,Gaochang Zou,Zidai Fan,Jiang Liu

For the first time, biochar derived from a renewable resource, cotton stalk, is used as the feedstock of direct carbon solid oxides fuel cells (DC-SOFCs) for electricity and gas cogeneration. It turns out that the cotton stalk biochar has plenty of naturally grown K and Ca, which are active catalysts for the reverse Boudouard reaction in DC-SOFCs. This natural advantage of the cotton stalk biochar enables an extremely high power density of an anode-supported DC-SOFC at 850 °C, 0.9 W cm −2 , which is the highest among those of the reported DC-SOFCs. Meanwhile, high concentration of CO gas, which is an important feedstock for chemical industry, is obtained from the DC-SOFCs. The energy conversion efficiency of the electricity-gas cogeneration of DC-SOFCs reaches over 70%. A novel method, using compressed char, is proposed and carried out for continuous supply of cotton stalk char to a DC-SOFC. The present work has demonstrated the feasibility and advantages of cogenerating electricity and gas through DC-SOFCs with biochar derived from cotton stalk as the feedstock.

Catalytic performance of NixCoy catalysts supported on honeycomb-lantern-like CeO2 for dry reforming of methane: Synergistic effect and kinetic study

Yanan Li,Yuqi Wang,Jinlei Wu,Shuqin Gao,Binjing Zhu,Junqian Wang,Jing Zhao,Le Wu,Lan Zheng,Xiaoli Zhang

Dry reforming of methane (DRM) is considered one of the most efficient methods for carbon utilization, as it can transform greenhouse gases (CH 4 and CO 2 ) into syngas (CO and H 2 ) which could be widely used in the production of high-value hydrocarbons. The synergistic effect between Ni and Co is leveraged to enhance the coke resistance and stability of Ni-based catalyst during the DRM process, building upon the surface spatial confinement provided by honeycomb-lantern-like CeO 2 support. The enhanced catalytic performance of Ni 0.9 Co 0.1 catalyst can be attributed primarily to the addition of cobalt, which facilitates CO 2 adsorption and activation, further promotes the Boudouard reaction and aids in the elimination of coke. This phenomenon is supported by evidence from CO 2 -TPD, XPS, SEM, TGA, XRD, and CO 2 -TPO analyses. Furthermore, the kinetics of Ni 0.9 Co 0.1 are examined using Power-Law (PL) and Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH) mechanisms, obtaining the explicit equations for the rate constants ( k and k r ), reaction orders of the reactants (α and β), and adsorption equilibrium constants ( K CH 4 KCH4 and K CO 2 KCO2 ). The comparison of the predicted CH 4 consumption rates with the experimental rates suggests that the LH mechanism is notably more precise than PL mechanism for Ni 0.9 Co 0.1 catalyst. Moreover, the relevant kinetic parameters (the activation energy and pre-exponential factor), pertinent to coke gasification process for the spent Ni 0.9 Co 0.1 and Ni 1.0 , are determined and calculated through CO 2 -TPO characterization and the modified Wigner-Polanyi equation.
