There are increasing need for the development of electromagnetic wave-absorbing materials since the growing concern about electromagnetic interference. However, materials with integrated structure and function are difficult to attain due to the high content of functional fillers. In this paper, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were formed into a three-dimensional porous framework, known as Buckypaper (BP), which was subsequently in situ deposited with iron tetraoxide (Fe 3 O 4 ) through the sol–gel method and incorporated into epoxy resin to create Fe 3 O 4 /BP/EP composites by hot pressing. The three-dimensional porous structure of Fe 3 O 4 /BP facilitates the high-content incorporation and uniform dispersion of CNTs and Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles. The results indicate that the 33%Fe 3 O 4 /BP/EP composite achieved an optimal reflection loss of −38.41 dB and an absorption bandwidth of 3.28 GHz at the optimal matching thickness of 1.5 mm. This performance primarily stems from Fe 3 O 4 adjusting the impedance matching of BP and enhancing the magnetic loss capability of CNTs. Furthermore, the deposition of Fe 3 O 4 on BP improves the mechanical strength of BP/EP, The 17% Fe 3 O 4 /BP/EP composite achieves a tensile strength of 35.09 MPa, which is 46.27% higher than that of BP/EP and 92.38% higher than pure EP. Highlights Fe 3 O 4 /BP was prepared by deposition of Fe 3 O 4 onto surfaces of the CNTs framework. Fe 3 O 4 /BP/EP composites with different Fe 3 O 4 /BP were fabricated. Fe 3 O 4 adjusts impedance matching of BP, and forms heterogeneous interfaces. Fe 3 O 4 /BP/EP composites exhibit excellent wave absorption performance. Fe 3 O 4 /BP/EP composites possess improved mechanical properties.

Buckypapers, the thin sheets made from an aggregate of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), have demonstrated promising electrical and thermal conductivities . However, the high in-plane to perpendicular anisotropy makes its application as thermal interface materials difficult. In order to increase the perpendicular electrical and thermal conductivities, copper nanowires (Cu NWs) were introduced into buckypapers. The Cu NWs stuck into the empty spaces between CNTs, connected them perpendicularly, and even induced a certain perpendicular CNT alignment. The electrical conductivity increased continuously with increasing the Cu content, while the smallest anisotropy was observed at the 50 wt.% Cu filling because an in-plane Cu network formed and improved much more the in-plane conductivity above this filling. On the contrary, as CNTs are more thermally conducting than Cu, the loading of Cu NWs over 50 wt.% decreased the thermal conductivity. Our measurement showed a high perpendicular conductivity of 10.1 W/m K at the 50 wt.% loading, more than quadruple and double as compared with the ones for a pure buckypaper and the one filled with 67–75 wt.% Cu NWs.

A freestanding and flexible buckypaper modfied with CoP/Co (CoP/Co-BP) is described. It has a sponge-like nanostructure and is shown to enable improved nonenzymatic sensing of glucose. The CoP/Co-BP was prepared by first depositing a uniform layer of ZIF- 67 crystals on BP, followed by two steps of pyrolysis treatment and phosphidation under an argon atmosphere. The morphology and structure of the material were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The electrochemical properties were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and amperometric response. The amperometric sensor, best operated at 0.45 V (vs. SCE) at pH 13 has a linear range that extends from 0.5 μM to 1.8 mM of glucose, a 0.2 μM detection limit (at S/ N = 3), and a sensitivity of 6427 μA mM −1 cm −2 in alkaline solution. This is mainly attributed to the synergistic effect between the highly active CoP nanostructure and BP which results in excellent conductivity. The uniformly distributed CoP nanoparticles in the network of BP prevent the formation of close-packed structure and facilitate electron transfer. The sensor has good selectivity and excellent long-term stability. It was applied to the determination of glucose in spiked human serum, and satisfactory results were obtained.

Self-assembled buckypapers have been successfully prepared using sodium carboxyl methyl cellulose (CMC) as a binder. The lowest resistivity that was reached was 0.43 ± 0.03 Ω·m, when the buckypapers were prepared by the same mass of CMC and carboxy-modified carbon nanotubes (CNTs). A heat-resistant electroconductive nanocomposite with epoxy resin as the matrix and CMC/buckypapers as the reinforcement was fabricated by a resin impregnation molding technique. The effects of CMC/buckypaper layers on the conductivity, thermal stability, and mechanical and dynamic mechanical performance of the epoxy resin polymer nanocomposites were investigated. It was found that CMC/buckypapers hold great promise for improving the properties of nanocomposites, and the buckypapers’ performance can be enhanced by using modified CNTs to prepare them. The obtained nanocomposites showed an approximate 71.23% bending strength improvement (125.04 ± 5.62 MPa) and a 30.71% bending modulus improvement (5.83 ± 0.68 GPa), with an increased number of CMC/buckypaper layers. An enhanced degradation temperature and residual mass were also achieved for the nanocomposites when compared with a pure polymer. The nanocomposites with four CMC/buckypaper layers possessed the highest storage modulus (1934 MPa), which was approximately 60% higher than that of a neat polymer (1185 MPa). Therefore, CMC/buckypapers could be effectively used to manufacture heat-resistant electroconductive polymer nanocomposites with improved properties. Keywords:cellulose;buckypapers;nanocomposites;electrical properties;mechanical properties;high-temperature properties

Self-supporting carbon nanotube (CNT) buckypaper has unique structural and conductive properties which can be utilized in various applications. A pressurized filtration technique was developed to fabricate the buckypaper, and tailor its porous structures and properties. Compared with the conventional vacuum filtration technique, the pressure applied in the pressurized filtration process increased from 1 atm to as high as 12 atm. Filtration behaviors of the CNT solutions during the vacuum and pressurized filtration processes were studied. The results indicated that the filtration behaviors were largely dependent of the applied pressure. Micro-morphologies of the buckypaper were also characterized and appeared to be corresponding to the filtration behaviors well. Upon applying high pressure during the filtration, porosity of the buckypaper was reduced slightly by ∼1.9% due to the flexibility of the porous CNT network structure. Dimensions of the gaps within the interior of highly intermingled CNT bundles or junctions also decreased, resulting in higher intertube interactions. The higher intertube interactions improved the overall mechanical properties, as well as electrical and thermal conductivities of the buckypaper significantly.

Inter-tube cross-linking of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is an effective approach to improve the inter-tube stress and current transfer abilities. Results of the microstructure characterization indicated that the cross-linking of CNTs in the solution induced severe tube aggregations, which had a negative impact on the mechanical and electrical properties of the buckypaper. To avoid the tube aggregations, an in situ cross-linking technique was developed by filtering the 1,4-benzoquinone solution through the as-prepared buckypaper. Micro-tensile and electrical conductivity testing results indicated that the bulk mechanical and electrical properties of the in situ cross-linked buckypaper were improved significantly. Interestingly, the in situ cross-linking process changed the Poisson’s ratio of the buckypaper from positive to negative. An overall evaluation and application perspectives of the buckypaper were also noted.

Buckypaper is a superb material for translating the exceptional properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into the macroscopic scale. However, its poor mechanical properties severely limit its performance for larger scale applications, due to the weak intertube interactions. A given small content of epoxy resin is intercalated into the porous CNT network in order to enhance the intertube interactions. An extremely high enhancing efficiency for both Young's modulus (∼×20) and ultimate strength (∼×26) of the buckypaper, and a novel two-stage mechanical percolation behaviour are observed. This is ascribed to the relative small molecular dimensions of the epoxy resin, with which the epoxy resin can diffuse into the nano-sized intertube gaps much more effectively. A molecular dynamics (MD) simulation conducted reveals that the epoxy resin tends to congregate at the CNT junctions, and has a strong effect in enhancing the intertube stress transfer abilities. Moreover, an analytical calculation based on the MD simulation and the fracture surfaces of the buckypaper strips establishes that the two-stage mechanical percolation behaviour is dominated by the epoxy diffusion behaviours. This work offers an innovative nano-engineering approach to enhance the mechanical properties, as well as other functionalities, of the buckypaper, which is important for its potential applications.

Combining polyaniline (PANI) with different dimensional carbon materials is an effective way to solve the disadvantages of poor rate performance and cycling stability induced by the structure destruction of conductive polymer materials over long-term charge/discharge cycles. In this work, novel three-dimensional (3D) conical PANI nanothorns are synthesized on a buckypaper substrate via a controlled electropolymerization process. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of the vertical growth of PANI nanothorns and the excellent mechanical elasticity of multi-wall carbon nanotubes, it can effectively alleviate the volume change during the charging and discharging process of the electrode material and ensure the rapid transmission of electrons. The morphology and structure of the composite have been characterized by scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results show that the electrode exhibits a high specific capacitance of 742 F g−1 at 1 A g−1 in 1 M of H2SO4 electrolyte and a capacitance retention of 76% after 2000 cycles. The novel 3D PANI nanothorn/buckypaper composite has significant potential as practical for use as electrode materials of supercapacitors due to its easy synthesis, low cost, and high specific capacitance.

The key barrier to design conductive polymer composites with maintained mechanical performance is to increase the content of conductive nanofillers with well-dispersity in the polymer matrix . Here we report new buckypaper (BP) reinforced polydivinylbenzene (PDVB)/doped polyaniline (DPANI) composites with significant improvement in both electrical and mechanical properties . The composites have been fabricated through a positive-pressure filtration method which features high loading of well-dispersed oxidized MWCNTs . The electrical conductivity and the elastic modulus of the BP reinforced composites were found to be 11.56 and 6.88-times improved, respectively, compared to the native PDVB(DPANI). The enhancement mechanism is explained by the formation of electrical transport pathways and an extensive molecular-level interaction between BP and DPANI. The enhancement effect has also been confirmed by comparing the experiment result with theoretical calculations following the Tandon-Weng model. The fabrication strategy and the analysis method presented herein can be used for the design of new functional polymer composites with both high electrical conductivity and high modulus.

The early detection of damage on composite structures can provide a basis and support for use in maintenance. This work presents the results of an experimental investigation concerning the low-velocity impact damage of composite structures based on buckypaper (BP) sensor arrays. Based
on the results of a tensile test and load-unload cycle, the BP sensors show high linearity and good stability. Electrical conductive networks that act as in-situ impact damage sensors are provided by well-dispersed carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Electrical resistance decreases with repeated impact
load and elastic deformation and damage evolution can be identified from the resistance change. The resistance change ratio of BP sensors after impact is decreased from 0 to –0.95. Throughout the test, BP sensors did not fail until the surface of the composite structure showed obvious
damage. Meanwhile, a C-scan was used to measure and record the internal and external damage to composite structures. Compared with the C-scan, experimental results show that this method is feasible, it can detect small barely visible impact damage (BVID) flaws and it is especially fit for
the damage evaluation of composite materials subjected to low-velocity impact. This work contributes to the health monitoring of composite structures using BP sensors and could be useful for applying an in-situ impact damage assessment system to real composite structures in the near future.

Most of the reported carbon-polyaniline (PANI) electrode composites are powders or require flexible substrates, which hinders their potential applications in the flexible wearable electronics. Moreover, PANI structure collapses and shed loss due to the lack of effective support and protection results in low capacity retention. In this study, superflexible, binder-free and substrate-free carbon nanotube-polyaniline nanofibers/MXene (CP nf M) buckypaper were prepared by ultrasonic dispersion self-assembly and directional pressure filtration. In the buckypaper, polyaniline nanofibers (PANI nf ) were in situ growth on carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and the CNTs-PANI nf was inserted between the MXene nanosheets that were ultrasonically separated. Some MXene nanosheets were cut into fragments by ultrasonic waves and self-assembled into nanoflowers on the CNTs-PANI nf . The CP nf M electrode had an excellent capacitance of 479 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 . The superflexible solid-state supercapacitors (FSSCs) assembled with the electrode had a capacitance of 110 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 , a high energy density of 15.3 Wh Kg −1 at a power density of 0.5 kW Kg −1 . The capacitance of the FSSC did not decrease but increased during the charge–discharge cycle, with a capacitance retention of 104% after 5000 cycles. Its capacitance retention was 90% after folding 200 times in half along the sharp crease. One-dimensional CNTs and two-dimensional MXene nanosheets collaboratively constructed the superflexible porous skeleton, alleviating the stress damage caused by volume changes of the PANI nf in the cycles. MXene nanosheets trapped the shed PANI nanoparticles. This work provides a way for potential application of high-performance energy storage devices in wearable electronics.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted attention due to their designable structures. However, recently reported MOF microwave-absorbing materials (MAMs) are dominated by powders. It remains a challenge to design MOF/carbon nanotube (CNT) composite structures that combine the mechanical properties of self-supporting flexibility with excellent microwave absorption. This work involves the hydrothermal approach to grow Ni-MOF of different microstructures in situ on the CNT monofilament by adjusting the molar ratio of nickel ions to organic ligands. Subsequently, an ultraflexible self-supporting Ni-MOF/CNT buckypaper (BP) is obtained by directional gas pressure filtration technology. The BP porous skeleton and the Ni-MOF with a unique porous structure provide effective impedance matching. The CNTs contribute to the conduction loss, the cross-scale heterogeneous interface generated by Ni-MOF/CNT BP provides rich interfacial polarization loss, and the porous structure complicates the microwave propagation path. All factors work together to give Ni-MOF/CNT BP an excellent microwave absorption capacity. The minimum reflection losses of Ni-MOF/CNT BPs decorated with granular-, hollow porous prism-, and porous prism-shaped Ni-MOFs reach −50.8, −57.8, and −43.3 dB, respectively. The corresponding effective absorption bandwidths are 4.5, 6.3, and 4.8 GHz, respectively. Furthermore, BPs show remarkable flexibility as they can be wound hundreds of times around a glass rod with a diameter of 4 mm without structural damage. This work presents a new concept for creating ultraflexible self-supported MOF-based MAMs with hierarchical interpenetrating porous structures, with potential application advantages in the field of flexible electronics.
