Preparation and properties of C/C−ZrB2−SiC composites by high-solid-loading slurry impregnation and polymer infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP)

Li-ping RAN,Fei RAO,Ke PENG,Huan YIN,Mao-zhong YI

Ultrahigh-temperature ceramics were added to C/C composites to meet their application requirement in a high-temperature oxidizing environment. C/C−ZrB 2 −SiC composites were fabricated by high-solid-loading slurry impregnation with polymer infiltration and pyrolysis. The dispersion and rheological behavior of ZrB 2 slurry and the microstructural, mechanical, and ablation properties of the C/C−ZrB 2 −SiC composites were investigated. Results indicated that a well-dispersed and low-viscosity ZrB 2 slurry was obtained using 0.40 wt.% polyethyleneimine as a dispersant at pH 5. Ceramics were uniformly distributed in the short-cut fiber layer and needle-punched area. The flexural strength of the C/C−ZrB 2 −SiC composites was 309.30 MPa. The composites exhibited satisfactory ablation resistance under the oxyacetylene flame of 2500 °C, and the mass and linear ablation rates were 0.40 mg/s and 0.91 μm/s, respectively. A continuous and compact ZrO 2 layer, which could effectively reduce the diffusion rate of oxygen and protect the composites from being ablated, was formed.

Hierarchical-design coating on C/C composite with excellent combination of autonomously self-healing ability and low oxygen permeability from 973 K to 1273 K

Xinzi Zhong,Liyun Cao,Tian Ji,Jianfeng Huang,Yijun Liu,Xuetao Shen,Yong Zhao,Zhiwen Cheng,Ting Liu

Antioxidant SiO 2 coating exhibits low cost and great compatibility with existing uses, but is strongly limited by its poor fluidity and high oxygen permeability from 973 K to 1273 K. Therefore, the hierarchical-design Glass/MoSi 2 -B 2 O 3 @SiO 2 -SiC coating was fabricated on C/C composite by a simple embedding method, and followed by a hot dip process. This composite yielded excellent combination of long-term antioxidant abilities and thermal shock resistances. As oxidized at 973 K for 1500 h, its mass loss was 0.35 %, and only 0.66 % at 1073 K for 2600 h. After thermal shocks 270 times, the weight loss was only 0.56 %. Interestingly, the Glass/MoSi 2 coating acted as a self-healing encapsulation shelter against oxygen, whilst the B 2 O 3 @SiO 2 layer yielded stable healing effect. The B 2 O 3 @SiO 2 microcapsule facilitated the activation of B 2 O 3 , SiO 2 phases, and borosilicate glass sequentially as temperature rose, leveraging their unique advantages in defect healing. Through the synergistic effects of interface encapsulation and defect self-healing, the oxygen kept osmotic diffusion. This study underscores the significance of hierarchical designs in coatings, facilitating structure optimizations and enhancing antioxidant capabilities at multiple levels.

Effect of the incorporation of SiC nanowire with double protective layers on SiC coating for C/C composites

Aolin Xie,Bei Zhang,Yicheng Ge,Ke Peng,Ping Xu,Xiaodong Wang,Zhirong Feng,Maozhong Yi,Zhe Zhou

To maintain the thermal stability of SiC nanowires during SiC coating fabrication process, carbon and SiC double protective layers were covered on the surface of nanowires. And SiC nanowires with double protective layers toughened SiC coating were prepared by pack cementation. The results showed that after introducing the SiC nanowires with double protective layers, the fracture toughness of the SiC coating was increased by 88.4 %. The coating protected C/C for 175 h with a mass loss of 3.67 %, and after 51 thermal shock cycles, the mass losses of the oxidized coating were 3.96 %. The double protective layers are beneficial to improve the thermal stability of nanowires, leading to good fracture toughness and thermal shock resistance of SiC coating. SiC nanowires consume the energy of crack propagation by fracture, pullout and bridging, leading to an increase in fracture toughness.

Ablation behavior of C/C composites matrix-modified by solid solution ceramic (Ta,Zr)C-SiC with different Zr/Ta ratios

Yuanming Zhou,Shuxin Li,Shuangxing Zhu,Ruizhi Liu,Zhenxiao Tang,Maozhong Yi,Ke Peng

To investigate the influence of (Ta,Zr)C on the ablation resistance of C/C composites, C/C-(Ta 0.5 Zr 0.5 )C-SiC, C/C-(Ta 0.33 Zr 0.67 )C-SiC, and C/C-(Ta 0.2 Zr 0.8 )C-SiC were prepared with different Zr/Ta ratios through high-solid-loading slurry impregnation combined with precursor infiltration and pyrolysis. The flexural performance and ablation resistance both improved with an increasing Zr/Ta ratio. Compared to C/C-(Ta 0.5 Zr 0.5 )C-SiC and C/C-(Ta 0.33 Zr 0.67 )C-SiC, the flexural strength of C/C-(Ta 0.2 Zr 0.8 )C-SiC increased by 74.17 % and 24.29 %, respectively. The mass ablation rate was reduced by 74.33 % and 81.02 %, while the linear ablation rate was reduced by 98.60 % and 97.65 % after 120 s of ablation, respectively. The variations in Zr/Ta ratios affected the formation, integrity, and performance of the microstructure, which was composed of a Zr-rich oxide skeleton combined with Ta-rich oxide binder within the Ta-Zr-O oxide layer on the composite surface, ultimately enhancing the overall ablation resistance of these composites.

Ablation behavior of C/C composite matrix-modified with solid solution ceramic TaZr2C3-SiC under an oxyacetylene flame

Yuanming Zhou,Mingyang Li,Shuxin Li,Shuangxing Zhu,Ruizhi Liu,Maozhong Yi,Ke Peng

The oxide layer that forms on the surface of C/C composites matrix-modified with multiphase ultra-high temperature ceramics is generally loose and poorly bonded, limiting its effectiveness in enhancing the ablation resistance of C/C composites. In this study, C/C composites were matrix-modified using solid solution ceramic TaZr 2 C 3 -SiC and multiphase ceramic TaC-2ZrC-SiC, both with the same Zr/Ta ratio. The C/C-TaZr 2 C 3 -SiC and comparative sample C/C-TaC-2ZrC-SiC composites were prepared through a high-solid-loading slurry impregnation method combined with a precursor infiltration and pyrolysis process. The flexural properties were evaluated, and ablation tests were conducted under an oxyacetylene flame. Compared to C/C-TaC-2ZrC-SiC, the C/C-TaZr 2 C 3 -SiC sample exhibited superior flexural properties and ablation resistance. The flexural strength, elastic modulus, and fracture toughness improved by 10.80%, 29.75%, and 37.67%, respectively. The mass and linear ablation rates were reduced by up to 85.49% and 77.26%, respectively. The superior ablation resistance of C/C-TaZr 2 C 3 -SiC was attributed to the formation of the anti-ablation microstructure composed of the Ta-rich oxide binder phase and Zr-rich oxide skeleton phase in the Ta-Zr-O oxide layer. The microstructure enhanced the viscosity of the oxides and strengthened their interfacial bonding, effectively suppressing the splashing and consumption of surface oxides under high heat flux while preventing their accumulation in the brim ablation region. The oxide layer was more compact and tightly bonded to the composite surface, providing the composites with significantly improved ablation protection. These findings provide a novel and effective approach for further improving the ablation resistance of C/C composites.

Preparation and ablation behavior of solid solution ceramic Ta0.2Zr0.8C-SiC matrix-modified C/C composites under high heat flux

Yuanming Zhou,Zhenxiao Tang,Ruizhi Liu,Zhe Zhou,Maozhong Yi,Ke Peng

To further enhance the ablation resistance of C/C composites, solid solution ceramic Ta 0.2 Zr 0.8 C was used to replace traditional ultra-high-temperature ceramic carbides for matrix modification of C/C composites. The C/C-Ta 0.2 Zr 0.8 C-SiC composite was fabricated by a high-solid-loading slurry impregnation combined with the precursor infiltration and pyrolysis process. The comparative samples of C/C-ZrC-SiC and C/C-TaC-SiC were also prepared using these same technologies. The microstructure, flexural properties, and ablation performance of the composite were investigated. Results showed that the C/C-Ta 0.2 Zr 0.8 C-SiC exhibited excellent overall flexural properties. During the ablation test under an oxyacetylene flame with high heat flux, the ablation resistance of C/C-Ta 0.2 Zr 0.8 C-SiC improved with prolonged ablation time, reaching mass and linear ablation rates of 0.67 mg/s and 0.18 μm/s after 120 s of ablation. Compared to the C/C-ZrC-SiC and C/C-TaC-SiC, the mass ablation rate of the composite was reduced by 49.24% and 68.70%, and the linear ablation rate was reduced by 97.22% and 97.71%, respectively. The enhanced ablation resistance was primarily attributed to the formation of the Ta-Zr-O oxide layer, composed of TaZr 2.75 O 8 , ZrO 2 , and Ta 2 O 5 , on the composites surface. In the oxide layer, the Ta-rich oxides served as a binder, filling gaps in the interface. Meanwhile, the Zr-rich oxides formed the skeleton that pinned the molten liquid oxides. The combined effects of Ta-rich and Zr-rich oxides made the Ta-Zr-O oxide layer more compact and strongly bonded to the matrix.

Microstructure and oxidation behavior of SiOC coatings on C/C composites co-deposited with HMDS and TEOS by using CVD process

Junjie Yan,Xiumei Wu,Qidong Liu,Yunping Li,Shu Yu

Silicon oxycarbide (SiOC) coatings were prepared through isothermal chemical vapor co-deposition by using two precursors of hexamethyldisilane (HMDS) and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). The microstructure, composition and the protectiveness on C/C composite against oxidation of the coatings prepared at temperatures ranging from 1423 K to 1563 K and pressures ranging from 500 Pa to 1200 Pa were investigated, respectively. After oxidation, cracks and defects were formed in the coatings of all conditions due to the volume shrinkage of amorphous SiO 2 crystallization and the mismatch of thermal expansion coefficient (CTE) between SiOC coatings and substrate. The most oxidation-resistant SiOC coating was obtained at 1563 K and 500 Pa, which exhibited the lowest weight loss rate of 4.87 % after 12 h of oxidation at 1673 K in air condition.

High temperature in-situ synchrotron-based XRD study on the crystal structure evolution of C/C composite impregnated by FLiNaK molten salt

Feng Shanglei,Yang Yingguo,Li Li,Zhang Dongsheng,Yang Xinmei,Xia Huihao,Yan Long,Tsang Derek K. L.,Huai Ping,Zhou Xingtai

An in-situ real-time synchrotron-based grazing incidence X-ray diffraction was systematically used to investigate the crystal structural evolution of carbon fiber reinforced carbon matrix (C/C) composite impregnated with FLiNaK molten salt during the heat-treatment process. It was found that the crystallographic thermal expansion and contraction rate of interlayer spacing d 002 in C/C composite with FLiNaK salt impregnation is smaller than that in the virgin sample, indicating the suppression on interlayer spacing from FLiNaK salt impregnated. Meanwhile the crystallite size L C002 of C/C composite with FLiNaK salt impregnation is larger than the virgin one after whole heat treatment process, indicating that FLiNaK salt impregnation could facilitate the crystallization of C/C composite after heat treatment process. This improved crystallization in C/C composite with FLiNaK salt impregnation suggests the synthetic action of the salt squeeze effect on crooked carbon layer and the release of internal residual stress after heating-cooling process. Thus, the present study not only contribute to reveal the interaction mechanism between C/C composite and FLiNaK salt in high temperature environment, but also promote the design of safer and more reliable C/C composite materials for the next generation molten salt reactor.

Sugar-Derived Nanocrystalline Graphite Matrix C/C Composites with Excellent Ablative Resistance at 3000 °C

Wenzheng Zhang,Mingyi Tan,Daming Chen,Boqian Sun,Yuan Cheng,Liancai Xun,Jingsheng Hu,Chenlin Hou,Yuxuan Liu,Yuhao Fang,Ping Hu,Wenbo Han,Shun Dong,Shanyi Du,Jiecai Han,Shuxi Miao,Qidong Yang,Yanchun Zhou,Xinghong Zhang

Sugars are renewable resources essential to human life, but they are rarely used as raw materials for the industrial production of carbon-based materials, especially for the preparation of carbon fiber-reinforced carbon-matrix (C/C) composites, which are extremely useful for the semiconductor and aerospace sectors. Herein, a method utilizing sugar-derived carbon to replace petrochemicals as dense matrix to preparing C/C composites is reported. The matrix from sugar-derived C/C (S–C/C) composites has a nanocrystalline graphite structure that is highly thermally stable and effectively bonded to the carbon fibers. The mechanical properties of the S–C/C composite are comparable to those prepared from petrochemical sources; significantly, it exhibits a linear ablation rate of 0.03 mm s −1 after 200 s of ablation at 3000 °C in 10 MW m −2 heat flux. This new class of S–C/C is promising for use in a broad range of fields, ranging from semiconductor to aerospace.

C/C-(Hf0.5Zr0.3Ti0.2)C–W–Cu composites: Long-term ablation resistance based on active-passive protection at 2600 °C

Junjie Xu,Wei Sun,Xiang Xiong,Hongbo Zhang

Compared with the traditional C/C composites modified by ultra-high-temperature ceramics (C/C-UHTCs), those modified by metal/medium-entropy ceramics have excellent mechanical properties, thermophysical properties, and long-term ablation resistance. These composites have great potential towards improving the high-temperature resistance and service life of thermal protection systems for spacecraft. In this study, a new type of (Hf 0.5 Zr 0.3 Ti 0.2 )C–W–Cu cermet-modified C/C composites (C/C-(Hf 0.5 Zr 0.3 Ti 0.2 )C–W–Cu) was prepared at 1500 °C. Compared with C/C-UHTCs, the bending strength and fracture toughness of C/C-(Hf 0.5 Zr 0.3 Ti 0.2 )C–W–Cu increased by 70 % and 110 % to 364.25 MPa and 14.64 MPa m 1/2 , respectively. Due to the high thermal conductivity of Cu and W, the thermal conductivity of this new composite was 106 % higher than that of C/C-(Hf 0.5 Zr 0.3 Ti 0.2 )C (44.26 versus 21.53 W/m·K). Under a high heat flow of 4.18 MW/m 2 , this material exhibited very low mass and linear ablation rates (−0.163 mg/s and −0.193 μm/s, respectively). Active and passive protection occur during ablation due to the evaporative cooling of Cu, CuO, and WO 3 as well as a dense outer oxide layer that inhibits oxygen diffusion. The internal oxide layer forms a Hf-Zr-Ti-C-O framework mingled with Ti-rich Ti-Hf-Zr-C-O and an unoxidised W–Cu structure, effectively reducing the osmotic oxygen content. This work provides a new direction for developing thermal protection materials capable of long-term service in ultra-high-temperature environments.

Hierarchical Nanoporous C/C Composite from Humic Fulvic Acid and Sulfonated Pitch for High-Energy-Density EDLC Electrodes

Panpan Chang,Fan Yang,Yongbing Cen,Jie Zheng,Xuguang Li,Qingruo Xie,Jinshi Dong

Graphical A hierarchical nanoporous C/C composite with high specific surface area was synthesized from sulfonated pitch and fulvic acid for high-energy-density EDLCs. It exhibits a highly continuous 3D carbonaceous network. By fully exploiting the synergistic effect between high e -conductivity and high specific surface area, it shows excellent electrochemical stability in EMIMBF 4 ionic liquid electrolyte. The maximum energy density can be as high as 55.4 Wh kg −1 , largely better than commercial activated carbon. As a new type of energy storage device, electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs) possess fast charge/discharge speed and good cycling stability. However, the low energy density and high production cost of EDLC electrodes are still big challenges. Herein, a hierarchical nanoporous C/C composite is synthesized by chemical recombination and subsequent activation strategy from low-cost carbon resources, namely renewable humic fulvic acid (FA) and industrial sulfonated pitch (SP). Profiting from the abundant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in SP and plentiful oxygen-containing groups in FA, the resultant nanoporous C/C composite has both high e -conductivity and high specific surface area (SSA). Thus, this porous C/C composite can be directly fabricated as EDLC electrode without any conductive agent. By fully exploiting the synergistic effect between high e -conductivity and high SSA, it shows excellent electrochemical stability in EMIMBF 4 ionic liquid electrolyte. Furthermore, it possesses a higher specific gravimetric capacitance (117 F g −1 ) than that of pure FA-based porous carbon (92.5 F g −1 ) at a current density of 1 A g −1 . More importantly, the maximum energy density can be as high as 55.4 Wh kg −1 , largely better than commercial activated carbon.

Outstanding mechanical and ablation resistance of C/C–ZrC–W composites prepared via slurry impregnation and reactive melt infiltration at 1500 ℃

Junjie Xu,Wei Sun,Xiang Xiong,Hongbo Zhang,Lingkun Yang

To improve the mechanical properties and ablation resistance of Cf-reinforced ceramic-based materials, ZrC–W cermet composites (C/C–ZrC–W) were prepared in C/C preforms using slurries and low-temperature reactive melt infiltration , and their microstructure, formation mechanism, and mechanical and ablation properties were investigated. The obtained results revealed that the formation of C/C–ZrC–W composites involved the dissolution–precipitation and C diffusion processes. Owing to the precipitation of W nanoparticles in the ZrC phase and interdiffusion of W/ZrC, the fabricated C/C–ZrC–W composites exhibited superior mechanical properties with a flexural strength of 280.65 ± 12.84 MPa and fracture toughness of 13.87 ± 0.56 Mpa.m 1/2 . The formation of a Zr–W–O dense oxide layer resulted in the excellent ablation performance of the C/C–ZrC–W composites in oxyacetylene flame with a temperature of 2200 °C, and their mass ablation rate and linear ablation rate were 1.14 mg/s and 2.42 µm/s, respectively. The described method can be potentially used for preparing high-strength, high-toughness, and ablation-resistant materials at low temperatures.
