Luminescent Mechanism and Anti-Counterfeiting Application of Hydrophilic, Undoped Room-Temperature Phosphorescent Silicon Nanocrystals

Xin Guo,Xuening Sun,Jinfeng Zhang,Yuanfen Huang,Xiaohong Liu,Xin Liu,Weilin Xu,Dongzhi Chen

Silicon nanocrystals (SiNCs) have attracted extensive attention in many advanced applications due to silicon's high natural abundance, low toxicity, and impressive optical properties. However, these applications are mainly focused on fluorescent SiNCs, little attention is paid to SiNCs with room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and their relative applications, especially water-dispersed ones. Herein, this work presents water-dispersible RTP SiNCs (UA-SiNCs) and their optical applications. The UA-SiNCs with a uniform particle size of 2.8 nm are prepared by thermal hydrosilylation between hydrogen-terminated SiNCs (H-SiNCs) and 10-undecenoic acid (UA). Interestingly, the resultant UA-SiNCs can exhibit tunable long-lived RTP with an average lifetime of 0.85 s. The RTP feature of the UA-SiNCs is confirmed to the n—π* transitions of their surface C═O groups. Subsequently, new dual-modal emissive UA-SiNCs-based ink is fabricated by blending with sodium alginate (SA) as the binder. The customized anticounterfeiting labels are also prepared on cellulosic substrates by screen-printing technique. As expected, UA-SiNCs/SA ink exhibits excellent practicability in anticounterfeiting applications. These findings will trigger the rapid development of RTP SiNCs, envisioning enormous potential in future advanced applications such as high-level anti-counterfeiting, information encryption, and so forth.

Modulation of C=O groups concentration in carbon-based materials to enhance peroxymonosulfate activation towards degradation of organic contaminant: Mechanism of the non-radical oxidation pathway

Yehan Xiong,Bingchang Chen,Tiantian Xu,Yu Zhou,Pengcheng Gao,Jianguo Bao

Current research has found that C=O groups hold a significant position in the oxidation process of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) in the activated carbon system, influencing both the generation of reactive species and the degradation of organic contaminants. Quinone organic compounds, which are rich in C=O groups, exhibit high reactivity but also inherent toxicity. Additionally, these compounds decompose easily at high temperatures, complicating their use in carbon-based materials. This study introduces a novel approach to enhance the content of C=O groups in carbon materials by controlling the synthesis of sulfur heterocyclic organic quinone (SHQ) precursors. For the first time, we established a sulfur heterocyclic organic quinone-derived carbon (SHQC)/PMS system, where SHQC catalysts demonstrate remarkable catalytic efficiency in activating PMS for the degradation of organic pollutants. In different natural water matrices, the removal rate of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) exceeds 90 % under optimized conditions (SHQC-9: 0.2 g L −1 , PMS: 1 mM, TC: 4.45 mg L −1 ). The C=O group was identified as the active site for PMS activation through a combination of quantitative structure-activity relationships, specific site blocking, and antithesis methods. The activation mechanism was elucidated through scavenger experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis. The results indicate that the superior catalytic performance of the SHQC-9/PMS system is due to a non-radical pathway, with singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) being the primary species responsible for TC degradation. These findings offer a novel pathway for designing highly efficient, safe, and environmentally friendly carbon material catalysts.

Rapid lithium ion transfer of crosslinked electrolyte through the coordination of C-O-C/C=O segments for LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 lithium metal batteries

Su Wang,Qifang Sun,Chen Li,Dongge Wang,Yue Ma,Hongzhou Zhang,Xixi Shi,Lianqi Zhang,Dawei Song

Given the high combustion or explosion potential of liquid electrolyte, polymer electrolytes have attracted intensive attention due to high safety, compatible interface and flexible processability. However, the related low ionic mobility remains an issue for related wide application. Herein, a crosslinked polymer electrolyte (abbreviated as PMEP) comprising abundant oxygen-contained groups (C-O-C/C=O) is developed. With the crosslinking agent of ethoxylated trimethylolpropane triacrylate (ETPTA), a high transference number ( t Li + =0.69) is obtained since C-O/C=O are conducive to the transfer of Li ions. Specifically, C=O group exists in individual monomers in order to be applicable to high voltage cathode, therefore, a criss-cross network containing abundant sites conducive to ion transport is constructed and rapid ion transfer as well as enhanced mechanical strength can be realized even in high potential system. With the coordination effect of C-O and C=O, PMEP exhibits rapid Li ion transfer and a wide electrochemical stability window of 5.1 V. As for Li//Li symmetrical cell, a stable voltage profile with slight polarization of 60 mV is displayed for over 550 h at 1 mA cm −2 . After assembled with LiNi 0.8 Co 0.15 Al 0.05 O 2 cathode, a high discharge specific capacity of 190.6 mAh g −1 is delivered and the capacity retention reaches 86 % at 0.1C for 100 cycles. This work provides a promising method for designing high-performance polymer electrolytes for lithium metal batteries.

Treatment of bisphenol pollutant in water by N,P-co-doped carbon nanosheet: Fast degradation, toxicity elimination and reaction mechanism investigation

Linli Dai,Yi Xie,Yongkui Zhang,Yabo Wang

Metal-free carbon catalysts perform well in peroxymonosulfate-based advanced oxidation process for the treatment of organic pollutant-containing wastewater. Herein, a natural biomolecule of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), containing abundant N and P elements, served as sole precursor to prepare N,P-co-doped carbon through one-step anoxic pyrolysis , which was applied as peroxymonosulfate activator to treat bisphenol-contaminated water. Owing to the endogenous N and P elements in ATP, in-situ doping was achieved for the prepared carbon material with excellent doping effect, such as high doping amount and numerous defects. During pyrolysis process, the generated gases facilitated the exfoliation of carbon structure, resulting in a nanosheet-like morphology with large specific surface area, e.g., 852.75 m 2  g −1 for NPCN-900 sample obtained at 900 °C. Benefiting from the structural modulation brought by N,P co-doping, typical sample of NPCN-900 presented excellent catalytic performance towards bisphenol AF (BPAF) degradation through PMS activation . An apparent reaction rate constant of 0.4115 min −1 was calculated under the investigated reaction conditions. Further studies indicated that 1 O 2 , surface-bound •OH and SO 4 − • worked together in NPCN-900/PMS system for BPAF degradation. Graphitic N, pyrrolic N, C O groups, defect structure and the doped P atoms in NPCN-900 contributed to PMS activation. It was also important that the toxicity of BPAF solution could be preliminarily eliminated after treatment by NPCN-900/PMS system, which was verified by ecotoxicity assessments through ECOSAR program and green algae growth experiments.

Peroxymonosulfate activation by Co9S8@ S and N co‐doped biochar for sulfamethoxazole degradation

Shizong Wang,Jianlong Wang

High efficient and stable activator is desired for the sulfate radical-based wastewater treatment. Cobalt sulfide and cobalt oxide have high catalytic activity for peroxymonosulfate (PMS), but poor stability. Here, a novel composite, nano Co 9 S 8 and CoO encapsulated by nitrogen and sulfur co-doped sludge-derived biochar (CoO/Co 9 S 8 @N-S-BC) was synthesized, characterized and applied for activating PMS. The results showed that CoO/Co 9 S 8 @N-S-BC can effectively activate PMS for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation, and 0.08 mM of SMX could be completely degraded within 10 min. The influencing factors, such as pH, temperature, chloridion, carbonate and humic acid were investigated. The SMX degradation conformed to pseudo first-order kinetics with rate constant of 0.379 min −1 . Sulfate radicals (dominant) and hydroxyl radicals contributed to SMX degradation. Carbon defects, pyridinic N, quaternary N, the carbon atoms next to pyridinic N, C O groups, -C-S-C and Co(II), all contributed to PMS activation.
