ZIF-L-derived C-doped ZnO via a two-step calcination for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Shuang Liang,Guanting He,Guozhe Sui,Jinlong Li,Dongxuan Guo,Ze Luo,Rongping Xu,Hong Yao,Chao Wang,Zhiyong Xing

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered as desirable precursors for the preparation of photocatalyst to improve photocatalytic hydrogen evolution efficiency due to the maintained special morphology. Herein, C-doped rod-like ZnO with porous structure has been successfully prepared by using ZIF-L as precursor via an optimized two-step calcination strategy, which is applied for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction from water splitting. The results show that ZnO-350-450 exhibits the best photocatalytic activity with a hydrogen production rate of 0.35 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 , which is 1.9 times higher than that of ZnO-400 (0.184 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 ) under simulated sunlight illumination. The enhanced photocatalytic performance is attributed to the fact that the two-step calcination provides the regular porous rod-like structure (ZIF-L) and the inclusion of carbon in ZnO photocatalyst. C-doped ZnO with regular morphology offers faster charge transfer rate and higher charge separation efficiency, and the C-doped expands a wider range of light absorption. Overall, the presented work could provide a new idea for designing and preparing of photocatalysts with high efficiency for photocatalytic hydrogen production.

MOF-derived C-doped ZnO prepared via a two-step calcination for efficient photocatalysis

Lun Pan,Tahir Muhammad,Lu Ma,Zhen-Feng Huang,Songbo Wang,Li Wang,Ji-Jun Zou,Xiangwen Zhang

ZnO is an important semiconductor that has been widely applied in solar cell, photocatalysis, environmental remediation. Doping and morphology control are important approaches to improve its photocatalytic performance. Herein, a facile two-step calcination method was developed to fabricate carbon(C)-doped cubic ZnO with porous structure from zeolite imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-8). Compared with one-step pyrolysis, the approach of two-step calcination not only retains the cubic morphology with inter-connected ZnO nanoparticles and porous structure but also introduces C doping in ZnO lattice effectively. This morphology has advantage in charge transfer, optical absorption and mass transfer during the photoreaction, and C doping results in high charge-separation efficiency. The sample C350-400 (C-doped ZnO, firstly calcined at 350   °C for 2   h from ZIF-8, then 400   °C for 1   h) shows the maximum photoactivity, which is ca . 3-fold and 4-fold higher than ZnO (C450) in photodegradation and PEC water splitting (under UV–vis irradiation), respectively. It is expected that the preparation of metal oxide from MOF is a very promising way to fabricate highly efficient photocatalyst.

C-Doped KNbO3 single crystals for enhanced piezocatalytic intermediate water splitting

Jiaqing He,Feng Gao,Haowei Wang,Fangyan Liu,Jiahui Lin,Biao Wang,Chuan Liu,Feng Huang,Zhang Lin,Mengye Wang

H2O2 is an environmentally friendly chemical for wide water treatments and H2 is regarded as an ideal substitute for traditional fossil energy. The industrial production of H2O2 is via the anthraquinone oxidation process, which, however, consumes extensive energy and produces pollution. Herein, based on the density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we report a green and sustainable piezocatalytic intermediate water splitting (IWS) process to simultaneously obtain H2O2 and H2 using C-doped KNbO3 nano single crystals as catalysts. The KNbO3 catalysts doped with suitable amounts of carbon show an enhanced water splitting rate, which could be attributed to the decreased reaction barriers on the C-KNbO3 surface and improved polarized built-in electric field, as evidenced by DFT simulations and PFM measurements. Remarkably, the piezocatalytic H2 evolution efficiency of 0.5 : 1 C-KNbO3 reaches 524.51 μmol g−1 h−1. Additionally, 0.5 : 1 C-KNbO3 could generate H2 and H2O2 simultaneously through two-electron piezocatalytic IWS reactions. This improved catalytic efficiency is attributed to the promoted piezo-response of KNbO3 after C doping, as revealed by PFM tests.

Synthesis of ZIF-derived C-doping Co3O4/ ZnO membranes for enhanced removal of organics by peroxymonosulfate activation under visible-light

Liusha Cen,Fan Yu,Shixue Liu,Chengcai Li,Wangyong Jin,Chenliang Wang,Hailin Zhu,Yuhai Guo

The technology that catalyst activated perxymosulfate (PMS) has been widely used in the decomposition of organic pollutants. We prepared Zn and Co-based ZIF and obtained C-doping Co 3 O 4 / ZnO heterojunction after pyrolysis. C-doping Co 3 O 4 / ZnO heterojunction with cage core-shell structure was loaded on the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes with a layered porous structure by solvent-assisted nanoparticle embedding (SANE) method, where the carmine degradation reached 99.6 % by MC-430 activated Perxymosulfate (PMS) within 10 min. The influencing factors (such as the pyrolysis temperature, PMS dosage, and dye concentration) on OFX degradation were observed, and MC-430 exhibited good tolerance for these factors and a wide range of solution hydrogen ion concentrations (pH= 4–10). The strong reusability and stability analysis showed that the carmine degradation of the MC-430/PMS system changed minorly (from 99.6 % to 97.7 %) in 5 consecutive cycles without any treatment. The degradation mechanism was confirmed by capture experiments, in which the non-free radical path was the main one and the free radical path was the auxiliary one. Moreover, structure characterizations and density functional theory calculations verified that doped C sites provided a channel for electron transfer from Zn sites to Co sites, which increased the generation rate of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and prolonged the catalyst life. This work provides a new method for the preparation of nonmetallic doping bimetallic strong coupling catalysis.

ZIF-L-derived porous C-doped ZnO/CdS graded nanorods with Z-scheme heterojunctions for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Shuang Liang,Guozhe Sui,Jinlong Li,Dongxuan Guo,Ze Luo,Rongping Xu,Hong Yao,Chao Wang,Shijie Chen

This study presents a novel approach for synthesizing C–ZnO/CdS graded nanorods derived from metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) that can be applied as a catalyst for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from pure water. Porous C-doped ZnO was prepared by a self-template method using imidazole-like metal–organic backbone (ZIF-L) as a precursor through a two-step calcination method. CdS nanoparticles were deposited on ZIF-L surface by chemical deposition . The two-step calcination method introduced elemental C, and the unique architecture of ZIF-L played an essential role in forming the hierarchical structure of the porous ZnO nanorods. Compared with other ZnO/CdS catalysts, the C-doped ZnO/CdS graded nanorods exhibited remarkable photocatalytic activity for hydrogen production . The highest hydrogen production rate of 20.25 mmol g −1  h −1 with an apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 24.7% at 365 nm obtained over C–ZnO/CdS with Pt as co-catalyst, which was 24.4 and 65.3 times higher than that over CdS (0.83 mmol g −1  h −1 ) and ZnO (0.31 mmol g −1  h −1 ), respectively. This outcome was attributed to (i) the formation of Z-scheme heterojunction that significantly promoted the separation and migration of photogenerated electron–hole pairs; (ii) C doping that reduced the bandgap of ZnO and broadened its spectral response range; and (iii) the ordered arrangement of porous nanorods that effectively reduced the recombination rate of the electron–hole pairs.

One-step synthesis of C quantum dots/C doped g-C3N4 photocatalysts for visible-light-driven H2 production from water splitting

Jian Cao,Xiaoli Jin,Zhaoyu Ma,Huiqing Wang,Yixue Xu,Yuwei Guo,Haiquan Xie,Junying Zhang

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is gaining more and more attentions as a promising metal-free photocatalyst for H2 production. Nevertheless, from the perspective of practical applications, the photocatalytic performance over g-C3N4 in visible-light region needs a further improvement. In this work, C doping and C quantum dots (QDs) are co-integrated in g-C3N4 by a one-step thermal polymerization method to obtain an advanced C QDs/C doped g-C3N4 photocatalyst. The synergistic effects of C doping and C QDs modification promote the photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4 significantly. The optimal C QDs/C doped g-C3N4 exhibits a significant improvement on visible-light-driven photocatalytic hydrogen production (205 μmol g−1 h−1) with an apparent quantum yield (AQE) at 420 nm reaching 1.24%, which is approximately nine-fold enhancement than that of pristine g-C3N4. The increased photocatalytic activity mainly benefits from the enhanced visible light absorption and carrier separation efficiency. This study may open a new perspective for the design and fabrication of C-modified g-C3N4 for photocatalytic hydrogen production.

Effective removal of antineoplastic doxorubicin by 0D Nb2O5 quantum dots embed 3D porous C-doped g-C3N4: Degradation mechanism, pathway and toxicity assessment

Congyue Zhao,Chunling Li,Minghui Chen,Tianqi Niu,Qian Zhao,Tianjun Ni,Dong Yan,Weidong Wu,Dong Liu

The exploitation of an efficient way to treat antineoplastic doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) is critical due to its harmful effects on the ecological system and human health. Recently, photocatalysis has emerged as one of the most feasible strategies to resolve this crisis. However, the development of novel catalysts with highly efficient photocatalytic activity still remains a great challenge. Herein, a novel 0D/3D Nb 2 O 5 QDs/C-doped g-C 3 N 4 type-II heterojunction with outstanding adsorption and photocatalytic degradation capacities for DOX was developed based on combining elemental doping, morphological design and heterojunction fabrication. The C-doping significantly promotes the visible light response and charge migration of g-C 3 N 4 , thus benefiting to the removal of DOX. Meanwhile, the 0D/3D heterogeneous morphology endows the catalysts with abundant active sites, high adsorptive capacity, favourable structural stability, high surface area and enhanced charge migration, which all contribute to the excellent adsorption and photocatalytic performance. The superoxide radicals shown a prominent role in the photocatalytic reaction. In addition, the Toxicity Estimation Software Tool, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and density functional theory calculations were also employed to investigate the DOX degradation mechanism, possible pathways and corresponding toxicity of intermediates. This work provides a promising way to develop highly efficient catalysts for the degradation of DOX.

Design and controllable synthesis of C-doped Bi2O3 nanowires with superior performance for removal of bisphenol A

Yefei Zhang,Yu Chen,Yunrui Hei,Shan Wang,Yingying Shi,Fengzhi Jiang,Lijun Luo

In this work, novel photocatalytic C-doped Bi 2 O 3 nanowires were prepared by a facile method using BN-0.5 adsorbent as a precursor. BN-0.5 adsorbent with nanowire structure was successfully synthesized by a novel solvothermal method by controlling the dosage of 1, 4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (H 2 BDC). BN-0.5 was not only used as template in the preparation to maintain the nanowire structure, but also as a source of C. The C elements could not only enhance the absorption of BPA, but also enhance effective spatial separation of photo-generated e − /h + pairs. As a consequence, the removal ratio of BPA over C-doped Bi 2 O 3 nanowires could reach 98.9%, after only 24 min of illumination. The removal mechanism of BPA on the C-doped Bi 2 O 3 nanowires was discussed. More importantly, this work provides a facile method for the preparation of C-doped Bi 2 O 3 nanowires, which are potential photocatalysts for treatment of water and are also suitable for mass production. These findings will help to design ideal structure, understand catalytic mechanism and spur development of solar driven technologies for environmental remediation.

Facile synthesis of graphene quantum dots and C-doping porous BN nanoribbon heterojunctions for boosting CO2 photoreduction

Zhao Du,Huayi Cai,Zhiyuan Zhao,Zhonglu Guo,Jing Lin,Yang Huang,Chengchun Tang,Guifeng Chen,Yi Fang

Herein, the graphene quantum dots (GQDs) as a photosensitizer have been introduced on the surface of C-doping porous BN nanoribbons (C-BNNR) to form a series of 0D/1D GQDs/C-BNNR heterojunctions as metal-free catalysts with excellent photocatalytic activity. the C-BNNR with sensitization of GQDs is innovatively applied to the field of CO 2 photocatalytic reduction. The results reveal that GQDs/C-BNNR heterojunctions exhibit excellent optical properties and photocatalytic activity. The CO production rate of GQDs/C-BNNR-3 (33.47 μmol g -1 h -1 ) is 14.49, 4.60 and 2.95 times higher than GQDs (2.31 μmol g -1 h -1 ), BNNR (7.27 μmol g -1 h -1 ) and C-BNNR (11.34 μmol g -1 h -1 ), respectively. This work demonstrates that the addition of GQDs can significantly improve the light utilization of C-BNNR without any effect on the structure. In addition, the strong interaction between the GQDs and C-BNNR leads to the formation of a built-in electric field. It allows photogenerated electrons in GQDs to be transferred into C-BNNR and complexed with holes. As a result, the photogenerated electrons in C-BNNR are induced to participate in the CO 2 photocatalytic reduction process. Meanwhile, GQDs/C-BNNR possess certain CO 2 photocatalytic reduction ability in the NIR region due to the upconversion ability of GQDs. This work pioneer the application of GQDs/C-BNNR heterojunctions in CO 2 photocatalytic reduction and further provides new ideas for the design of novel metal-free catalysts.

C-doping into h-BN at low annealing temperature by alkaline earth metal borate for photoredox activity

Myonghak Ri,Kwanghak Choe,Kumchol Kim,Yan Gao,Zhiyong Tang

BCN (boron carbon nitride) nanosheets are promising photocatalyst materials for solar fuel production by visible light-driven water splitting and CO2 reduction due to their tunable band gap and unique properties. C-doping into h-BN by thermal annealing makes possible the preparation of BCN nanosheets with photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation, but it generally requires a very high temperature (>1250 °C) from the thermodynamic viewpoint. Here, we report a new method to prepare BCN nanosheets with visible light-photocatalytic activity at lower annealing temperature (1000 °C) than equilibrium by adding alkaline earth metal compounds. BCN nanosheets formed in borate melt show a clear layered structure, tunable bandgap and photocatalytic activity for water splitting and CO2 reduction under visible light illumination. This provides a direction for doping other elements into h-BN at low annealing temperature by alkaline earth metal borates.

Homogenous Cr and C Doped 3D Self-Supporting NiO Cellular Nanospheres for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Zhaojun Tan,Chuanbin Li,Lijun Wang,Mingjie Kang,Wen Wang,Mingqi Tang,Gang Li,Zaiqiang Feng,Zhenwei Yan

Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is one promising technique to obtain high-purity hydrogen, therefore, exploiting inexpensive and high-efficiency HER electrocatalysts is a matter of cardinal significance under the background of achieving carbon neutrality. In this paper, a hydrothermal method was used to prepare the Cr-NiC2O4/NF (Ni foam) precursor. Then, the NiO-Cr-C/NF self-supporting HER catalyst was obtained by heating the precursor at 400 °C. The catalyst presents a 3D cellular nanospheres structure which was composed of 2D nanosheets. Microstructure characterization shows that Cr and C elements were successfully doped into NiO. The results of electrochemical measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that under the synergy of Cr and C, the conductivity of NiO was improved, and the Gibbs free energy of H* (∆GH*) value is optimized. As a result, in 1.0 M KOH solution the NiO-Cr-C/NF-3 (Ni:Cr = 7:3) HER catalyst exhibits an overpotential of 69 mV and a Tafel slope of 45 mV/dec when the current density is 10 mA·cm−2. Besides, after 20 h of chronopotentiometry, the catalytic activity is basically unchanged. It is demonstrated that C and Cr co-doping on the lattice of NiO prepared by a simple hydrothermal method and subsequent heat treatment to improve the catalytic activity and stability of the non-precious metal HER catalysts in an alkaline medium is facile and efficient. Keywords:hydrogen evolution reaction;NiO;electrocatalysts;nanosphere

C-doped Bi3O4X nanosheets with self-induced internal electric fields for pyrene degradation: Effects of carbon and halogen element type on photocatalytic activity

Yanyu Song,Weiyu He,Xianbo Sun,Juying Lei,Long D. Nghiem,Jun Duan,Wen Liu,Yongdi Liu,Zhengqing Cai

A series of C-doped Bi 3 O 4 X (X = Cl, Br, I) photocatalysts with layer-stacked structure was synthesized using glucose as carbon source, and the carbon doping and halogen species on harvesting broader solar spectrum and promoting charge carrier separation were systematically investigated. For pyrene photolysis, the photodegradation rate of pristine materials followed the order of Bi 3 O 4 I > Bi 3 O 4 Br > Bi 3 O 4 Cl, which was attributed to the difference in electronegativity of the halogen elements . The doped carbon boosted photocatalytic performance and the optimal C/Bi 3 O 4 I achieved 100% pyrene removal within 20 min, which primarily benefited from the dramatic improvement of the internal electric field (IEF). The improved IEF further increased the separation and transfer efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers. XRD and XPS characterizations confirmed that the doped carbon implanted into the lattice of [X] layers, and mainly affected the X np states. The X np orbitals contributed to the valence band (VB) of Bi 3 O 4 X, thus the local occupied states induced by doped carbon formed above VB and significantly decreased the VB potential. Meanwhile, the doped carbon narrowed the band gap and greatly improved visible light utilization. The O 2 − , h + and OH were identified as dominant active species for pyrene degradation, and the generation rate of O 2 − and OH was further measured by the probe technique. Moreover, the photodegradation pathways of pyrene were proposed and the ecotoxicity of intermediates was assessed. This study reveals the effect of halogen species on photocatalytic activity and provides guidance for enhancing IEF by doping inorganic element.
