The effects of different ammonium salts (ammonium carbonate, diammonium hydrogen phosphate, ammonium sulfate, and ammonium chloride) on the carbonation mineralization performance of γ-C 2 S were investigated. Various analytical techniques were employed to characterize the mechanical properties, carbonation product compositions, morphology and pore structure of the hardened matrix. The results indicate that the performance of the hardened matrix after carbonation curing is closely related to the mineralization degree, the types of formed products, and the calcium carbonate structure. The introduction of ammonium salts altered the carbonation products and microstructure of the materials, reducing the Q 4 /Q 3 content of the silica gel and modifying the formation of vaterite, particularly in the systems containing ammonium sulfate, diammonium hydrogen phosphate, and ammonium carbonate. These changes consequently affected the pore structure. Among the different salts, the use of a 2 mol/L ammonium chloride solution showed the most significant improvement in the performance of the hardened material. Compared to the control group, the compressive strength and carbonation degree increased by 42.04 % and 7.33 %, respectively. This enhancement was primarily attributed to the increased calcium carbonate content, which reduced harmful pores and led to a more regular and stable structure of calcite particles. This study identifies key factors influencing the performance changes of γ-C 2 S-based carbonated materials under different ammonium salt dosages, providing new possibilities for the development of high-performance carbon-cured cementitious materials.

In the preparation of foam concrete (FC), reconciling the contradiction of porosity (or thermal conductivity) and mechanical strength poses a significant challenge. In this paper, the strategy of regulating the carbonation of γ-2CaO·SiO 2 (γ-C 2 S) to form aragonite whiskers for strengthening the pore wall was proposed, thereby achieving the highest possible total porosity while meeting the required compressive strength. The controlled formation of aragonite and its strengthening mechanism of pore wall, as well as the optimum preparation conditions of FC formed by γ-C 2 S carbonation were studied. The results indicated that the CaCO 3 in the pore walls predominantly existed in the form of whisker-like aragonite under the action of modifier MgCl 2 ·6H 2 O, and the mass content of aragonite achieved 53.4 %, almost without calcite. Under the optimum preparation conditions, the thermal conductivity and compressive strength of aragonite foam concrete (AFC) were 0.0496 W/m·K and 0.5 MPa, respectively. Compared with calcite foam concrete (CFC) formed without the regulator, the compressive strength was increased by 150 % and the thermal conductivity was decreased by 5.2 %, it showed that thermal conductivity and mechanical strength were reconciled. Based on pore structure analysis, the formation of aragonite reduced the pore wall porosity (PP) and refined the most probable pore size. Furthermore, the CO 2 absorption rate reached 45.4 % under the carbonation of 84 h. This provides a new perspective for the preparation of low thermal conductivity FC with CO 2 sequestration functionality.

Wet pre-carbonation of steel slag is an important solution to the steel slag soundness problem. This method, however, can consume a significant amount of silicate phase in steel slag. To address this issue, it is proposed that the consumption of calcium silicate can be reduced while the hydration performance of steel slag can be improved by adding acidic amino acids into the wet carbonation of steel slag. β-C 2 S is the main cementitious component in steel slag. Synthetized β-C 2 S was used to simulate the reaction mechanism of steel slag during carbonation and to study the role of acidic amino acids in carbonation. The carbonation products were characterized by XRD , FT-IR, TG-DTG, and SEM. The results demonstrated that without the addition of acidic amino acids, the carbonation degree of β-C 2 S reaching the maximum at 1 h under the experimental conditions. Calcite and amorphous silica was formed as a result of the carbonation of β-C 2 S. The final carbonation degree was lower after adding higher concentrations (0.1 mol/L) of acidic amino acids than before. Higher concentrations of acidic amino acids increased the content of metastable CaCO 3 , primarily vaterite. Acidic amino acids were added in the pre-carbonation of steel slag, then the steel slag was mixed with cement to prepare cementitious materials . The cementitious materials’ 28-day compressive strength was higher than without amino acids, and the maximum of strength increased by 9.45 % compared to that without amino acids. Whether amino acids were added or not, the boiling expansion value decreased to 0 after 1 h of carbonation, indicating that the carbonation reaction improved the soundness of cementitious materials.

The physical and microscopic properties of γ-C 2 S and β-C 2 S under hydration, carbonation , and hydration–carbonation cycle reactions were investigated. The hydration–carbonation cycle reaction facilitated the carbon sequestration of C 2 S, and the generation of CaCO 3 filled the pores of the matrix and enhanced the matrix density in the carbon fixation reaction process. In the subsequent hydration and reaction process, the formation of hydration products increased the number of pores in the matrix and reduced the matrix density. Post-hydration, γ-C 2 S slurry became powder and had no mechanical strength . However, after carbonation reaction and two carbonation–hydration cycles, γ-C 2 S exhibited better mechanical properties than β-C 2 S.

This paper investigated the combined effect of chemical activators and nano-SiO2on the hydration reaction and the microstructure of γ-C2S. The hydration reaction of γ-C2S slurry activated with chemical activators (NaHCO3, NaOH, K2CO3, and KOH at 1 mol/L) was enhanced by 1% nano-SiO2. The hydrate reaction rate was determined by isothermal calorimetry, and the hydrated samples were characterized by XRD, TGA/DTG, SEM-EDS, and29Si MAS/NMR. The results revealed a substantial enhancement in the hydration activity of γ-C2S due to the presence of the alkaline activator. Furthermore, nano-SiO2did not alter the composition of γ-C2S hydration products, instead providing nucleation sites for the growth of hydration products. Incorporating nano-SiO2promoted the formation of C-(R)-S-H gel with a low calcium-to-silica ratio and increased its polymerization levels, resulting in more favorable structures. Among all the activators used in this study, potassium salts had a better activation effect than sodium salts. After 28 days of curing, the degree of hydration reaction in the KC+Si group was 48% and about 37% for the NHC+Si group. Whereas, the KH+Si and NH+Si groups only reached approximately 20% after the same hydration duration.

Carbonation of calcium silicate (CS) minerals to produce hardened construction materials has attracted increasing interest, but the efficiency of conventional CS minerals is low. This study prepared a highly reactive β-C 2 S derived from a C-S-H precursor through hydrothermal synthesis . The potential CO 2 uptake ability, product compositions, microstructural characteristics , and carbonation mechanisms of the hydrothermal β-C 2 S were investigated. The results showed that the hydrothermal β-C 2 S achieved 3.7 times higher carbonation efficiency compared to the reference β-C 2 S prepared by traditional calcination and reached a carbonation degree of 56.1 % within 10 min. Its high reactivity was attributed to large specific surface area, unique thin lath structure, and fine grain size . The novel type of C-S-H produced, special thin lath structure evolution and sufficient ACC led to an almost complete carbonation degree of hydrothermal β-C 2 S. The developed carbonation process could be used to valorize recycled concrete waste which contains a large amount of C-S-H.

The demand for the development of low-carbon and energy-saving technologies in the cement industry is extremely urgent, and calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cement has attracted much attention because of the low-carbon and energy-saving advantages for cement production. However, the disadvantage of CSA cement is that the hydration products are susceptible to carbonization, which may cause a decrease in the mechanical properties and durability of the cement matrix. To address this issue, this work focused on the primary minerals of CSA cement, and explored the effects of different superplasticizers on C2S and C4A3S¯. The study employed three types of superplasticizers: sodium lignosulfonate superplasticizer (CMN), naphthalene series superplasticizer (FDN), and polycarboxylate superplasticizer (PCE). The adsorption degree of these superplasticizers on C2S and C4A3S¯ was analyzed using ultraviolet spectroscopy (UV-Vis). Zeta potential measurements were conducted to assess the effect of superplasticizers on the surface potential of C2S and C4A3S¯, thereby studying their dispersion properties. Furthermore, the study examined the phase, composition, and morphology of different carbonation products under the action of superplasticizer by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, asynchronous thermal analyzer thermogravimetry coupled with differential scanning calorimeter (TG-DSC), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and then their carbonation activity was analyzed. The results indicated that the adsorption capacity of C4A3S¯ was higher for CMN and FDN compared to C2S, while C2S showed a higher adsorption capacity for PCE than C4A3S¯. This difference in adsorption was attributed to the distinct charging properties and main functional groups of the superplasticizers. Specifically, FDN formed a robust electrostatic repulsion layer when adsorbed on the surface of hydration particles, while PCE exhibited steric hindrance during adsorption. These actions affect the carbonation process of the minerals, resulting in the compressive strength and durability of CSA cement being affected as well.

Ion doping was regarded as an effective method for the adjustment of dicalcium silicate (C 2 S) mineral phase composition and then improve the corresponding carbonation activity according to recent studies. However, the main drawbacks of the previously reported about the carbonated compacts made by various ions-doped C 2 S were their low degree of carbonation (DOC). In this work, a typical heavy metal ion (i.e., Cr 6+ ) was used for the sintering of C 2 S, the effect of Cr 6+ doping on crystal transformation, mineral phase composition, carbonation hardening and solid solution tendency of clinkers was investigated. The results show that the moderate Cr 6+ doping (i.e., 1.5 %) led to an ultra-high DOC (i.e., around 59.2 %) and compressive strength (i.e., 137 MPa) of the corresponding carbonated compacts after 24 h. Comparing with blank group (i.e., without Cr 6+ ), the improvement degree of DOC and compressive strength was 27.4 % and 80.2 %, respectively. The reasons could be disclosed as following: comparing the single γ-C 2 S in blank group and excessive β-C 2 S with small amount of γ-C 2 S in Cr-2.0 % clinker, the moderate proportion of β-C 2 S and γ-C 2 S in Cr-1.5 % clinker, leading to their superior “transfer effect” (i.e., from the each other activation of β-C 2 S and γ-C 2 S). The superior “transfer effect” leading to their higher total carbonation activity and the combined CO 2 sequestration ability, which benefits the compressive strength and DOC in turn, respectively. This study provides new choice for preparing ultra-high CO 2 sequestration ability carbonate solidified materials based on ion-doped C 2 S clinker, and new insight on the reaction mechanism of binary C 2 S clinker.

CO 2 curing technology for construction materials faces three major challenges: limited CO 2 diffusion due to the dense CaCO 3 layer, inefficient reaction kinetic, and internal stresses induced by volumetric expansion during the carbonation curing process. This study introduces a layered structure strategy employing PAM hydrogel as interlayers between γ-C 2 S layers to address these limitations through the combined functions of PAM incorporation and layered structural design. Layered structure specimens achieved compressive strength of 127.60 MPa, flexural strength of 23.68 MPa, and carbonation degree of 41.8%, representing improvements of 114.63%, 29.05%, and 9.9 percentage points, respectively, over conventional compaction structure. Multiscale characterization indicated that PAM incorporation and its layered spatial arrangement contributed differently to carbonation behavior and mechanical performance. First, the PAM interlayer formed a CO 2 permeation network through horizontal layer channels, enabling carbonation to penetrate beyond surface regions. Second, the polyacrylamide hydrogel maintains optimal humidity conditions coupled with interfacial Ca 2 + -carboxylate coordination accelerates ion leaching and reaction kinetics. Third, the polyacrylamide layer dissipates volumetric stresses during the reaction process through reversible deformation and energy dissipation, thereby enhancing material toughness and strain-bearing capacity. This layered manufacturing strategy provides a viable route to simultaneously optimize CO 2 sequestration and mechanical performance, offering new perspectives for developing carbonation mineralized materials and advancing CO 2 curing technology toward industrial application.
