Solar-light-driven photocatalytic selective oxidation of biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-diformylfuran over 2D g-C3N4/BiOCl heterostructures photocatalyst

Xian-De Zhou,Yong-Hui Tian

Biomass is a natural and renewable carbon resource. One of the possible green approaches to “carbon neutrality” is catalytic conversion of biomass resources into high value-added chemicals. As a result, photocatalytic selective oxidation of the biomass product 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) to 2,5-dicarbonylfuran (DFF) is an ecologically benign and energy efficient method. In this study, 2D g-C 3 N 4 /BiOCl heterostructures composites were prepared by easy ultrasonication-assisted stirring method for the first application of photocatalytic oxidation of 5-HMF to DFF. The physicochemical properties of the synthesized materials were characterized by SEM, XRD, FT-IR, XPS, UV–vis, BET surface area, PL and EPR analysis. The experimental results show that the g-C 3 N 4 /BiOCl composite is superior to pure g-C 3 N 4 and BiOCl in the oxidation of 5-HMF to DFF. The improved photocatalytic performance of the g-C 3 N 4 /BiOCl composites can be attributed to the improved visible light absorption, the creation of compact and intact Z-type heterojunction, increased surface area and enhanced separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. In addition, the photocatalyst has high stability and reusability. A putative photocatalytic process is proposed based on the respective energy band locations of these two semiconductors.

Cysteine-assisted photoelectrochemical immunoassay for the carcinoembryonic antigen by using an ITO electrode modified with C3N4-BiOCl semiconductor and CuO nanoparticles as antibody labels

Zhang Bing,Jia Yejing,Wang Jing,Hu Xing,Zhao Zhihuan,Cheng Yan

A sensitive photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunoassay for the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is described that is based on the use of C 3 N 4 -BiOCl semiconductor on an ITO electrode. The photocurrent of the modified electrode was measured under visible light illumination. It increased in presence of L-cysteine due to rapid separation of the photoexcited electrons and holes. A sandwich-type immunoassay in a 96-well microtiter plate format used CuO nanoparticles as label for the secondary antibody. The Cu 2+ is released from the CuO in the sandwich complex by treatment with acid. The free Cu 2+ combined with both the cysteine and the electron receptors of C 3 N 4 and BiOCl. Under optimal conditions, this dual action immensely decreases the photocurrent of the PEC system, and the response is inversely proportional to the CEA concentrations from 0.1 pg mL −1 to 10 ng mL −1 at the working voltage of 0 V (vs. SCE). The detection limit is 0.1 pg mL −1 , and the method is exhibited satisfactory selective, repeatable and stable. Schematic representation of an immunoassay based on cysteine-assisted C 3 N 4 -BiOCl photoelectrochemical platform. CuO nanoparticles were utilized as labels in immunocomplex to release Cu 2+ in acidic condition. Carcinoembryonic antigen in sample was detected sensitively by dual function of Cu 2+ with cysteine and C 3 N 4 -BiOCl semiconductor.

Construction of novel polyethylenimine-g-C3N4/BiOCl heterojunctions for the efficient photocatalytic degradation of nitro explosives

Jing Yan,Xiaomin Song,Bo Jin,Rufang Peng

Nitro explosive photocatalytic degradation is of great importance. Herein, novel and efficient polyethylenimine-g-C3N4/BiOCl (PEI-CN/BC) heterojunctions were constructed through electrostatic self-assembly. Zeta potential results showed that the PEI-CN surface was positively charged. Transmission electron microscopy findings proved that PEI-CN and BC successfully formed a close contact PEI-CN/BC heterostructure. The photocatalytic effect of PEI-CN/BC on PNP degradation was also investigated under simulated light conditions. The results showed that the obtained 1PEI-CN/2BC (mass ratio of PEI-CN to BC was 1 : 2) had the best photocatalytic effect and could completely degrade PNP in 90 min. The apparent rate constant (k) of the reaction was 21.9 and 4.0 times that of PEI-CN and BC alone, respectively. Photoelectrochemistry and photoluminescence results showed that the improved electron–hole separation was the main reason for the superior photocatalytic performance of PEI-CN/BC. Free radical trapping experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance measurements revealed that superoxide radicals were the major active substance in the photodegradation. This work provides inspiration and alternatives in designing new efficient 2D/2D heterogeneous photocatalysts for the efficient degradation of nitro explosive wastewater.

Dual-field synergy in oxygen-vacancy-rich g-C3N4/BiOCl/PVDF membranes for enhanced piezo-photocatalytic antibiotic degradation

Yining Zhang,Jiahao Gan,Mengyang Xu,Jinze Li,Xiang Liu,Zhengyu Chen,Aigang Zhang,Pengwei Huo

Dual-electric-field coupling of the S-scheme g-C 3 N 4 /BiOCl heterojunction and β-PVDF piezo-polarization modulates oxygen-vacancy energy levels for efficient charge separation. • An oxygen-vacancy-rich g-C 3 N 4 /BiOCl photocatalyst is integrated into a porous PVDF membrane, achieving stable immobilization and rapid mass transport. • The multifunctional membrane delivers a high piezo-photocatalytic rate of 0.04012 min −1 and 98.21 % tetracycline removal under light-mechanical coupling. • The composite membrane exhibits excellent recyclability and enables synergistic piezo-photocatalytic purification for antibiotic-contaminated wastewater. Oxygen vacancies (O Vs ) play an important role in photocatalysis, but exploiting O Vs in heterostructures to achieve efficient electron trapping and directional transport remains challenging. In this study, oxygen-vacancy-rich 2D/2D g-C 3 N 4 /BiOCl nanosheets were prepared via a simple hydrothermal method and immobilized on a porous β-PVDF matrix through a freeze-assisted phase inversion process, forming a flexible piezo-photocatalytic membrane. The results indicate that the built-in electric field of the g-C 3 N 4 /BiOCl heterojunction and the piezoelectric polarization field of PVDF jointly regulate the electronic behavior near O Vs . These two electric fields overlap around the defect sites and favorably modulate the defect energy levels, thereby enhancing the ability of O Vs to capture electrons. This dual-field regulation deepens the defect potential wells, prolongs electron residence time, and suppresses carrier recombination. The piezoelectric field also provides a directional driving force that guides electron transport along the interface and promotes the generation of reactive oxygen species. Using tetracycline as the target pollutant, the g-C 3 N 4 /BiOCl/PVDF-50 % membrane exhibited the highest piezo–photocatalytic activity, with an apparent rate constant of 0.04012 min −1 . Overall, this study elucidates the synergistic mechanism among the piezoelectric field, the heterojunction electric field, and O Vs , and provides an effective strategy for designing high performance flexible piezo-photocatalytic materials. Oxygen‑vacancy‑rich g‑C 3 N 4 /BiOCl nanosheets embedded in a flexible β‑PVDF membrane construct dual electric fields by combining an S‑scheme built‑in field with piezoelectric polarization under mechanical vibration. This dual‑field superposition deepens defect potential wells, facilitates directional charge separation, and enhances defect‑mediated O 2 activation, thereby enabling efficient piezophotocatalytic degradation of tetracycline in aqueous solution. Interfacial Charge Transfer Effect of 2D/2D g-C3N4/BiOCl S-scheme Heterojunctions for Enhanced Removal of Dyes in Wastewater

Yan Wang,Hui Liu,Wenzhi Li,Na Li,Guoyong Wang,Xiaochao Zhang

Rational structural design of S-scheme heterojunctions in semiconductor-based photocatalysts constituted a pivotal strategy for optimizing their photocatalytic performance through efficient charge carriers separation and enhanced redox capability. Herein, a novel two-dimensional 2D/2D heterostructure is successfully constructed by integrating bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) nanosheets onto g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets, which significantly enhances the interfacial contact area between these two components and facilitates the migration of photogenerated charge carriers by forming a built-in electric field. Specifically, thiourea, urea, and melamine are employed as the precursor to prepare a series of g-C 3 N 4 /BiOCl photocatalysts, denoted as T-CN/BiOCl, U-CN/BiOCl, and M-CN/BiOCl, respectively. Benefiting from the excellent hydrophilic characteristics, wide photoresponse ranges and efficient interfacial charge transfer, M-CN/BiOCl displays exceptional degradation performance for both cationic rhodamine B (RhB) dyes and anionic methyl orange (MO). Under simulated sunlight irradiation, the photocatalytic degradation of RhB (20 mg/L) and MO (20 mg/L) can exhibit distinct kinetics, with complete removal achieves in 10 min and 100 min , respectively. Notably, the degradation rate constants of RhB demonstrate the remarkable superiority, being 29.2-fold and 475.2-fold higher than those of MO under simulated sunlight and visible light irradiation.

Enhancing the photocatalytic performance of the g-C3N4/BiOCl heterojunction in gaseous toluene degradation via K+ decoration in g-C3N4

Fan Fu,Jian Yang,Hao Xu,Yang Li,Shaobo Cao,Kang Da,Wenting Chen,Ximei Fan

Doping or constructing heterojunctions by coupling with other semiconductors are effective methods to improve the photocatalytic performance of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) in toluene degradation. Herein, thermally condensed synthesized K-doped g-C 3 N 4 (KCN) is coupled with BiOCl via a hydrothermal method, and KCN/BOC heterostructures are obtained. The optimal KCN 1 /BOC heterojunction exhibits approximately 85% removal of toluene after 150 min irradiation under simulated solar light, which is 12.4 and 9.6 times higher than those of g-C 3 N 4 and BiOCl, respectively. The superior performance of KOH-modified g-C 3 N 4 is attributed to the electron transfer channels formed by the insertion of K + into the g-C 3 N 4 layers, which facilitate efficient charge separation and rapid electron transfer. Furthermore, the KCN/BOC heterostructure with the Z-scheme further improves the surface charge separation efficiency, which plays a critical role in the photocatalytic process. This work provides a facile and promising strategy for dual-strategy modification of g-C 3 N 4 to enhance photocatalytic degradation activity.

Electrochemical and Optical Insights into Interfacial Connection for Fast Pollutant Removal: Experimental Study of g-C3N4/BiOCl Heterojunction for Rhb and MO Photodegradation

Hadja Kaka Abanchime Zenaba,Mi Long,Xue Liu,Mengying Xu,Wen Luo,Tian Zhang

Developing efficient heterojunction photocatalysts is essential to address the challenge of degrading persistent organic pollutants. In this study, a multi-scale characterization strategy was employed to investigate the implications of interfacial connectivity between synthesized graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) /bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl)e removal of Rhodamine B (RhB) and Methyl Orange (MO). Morpho-structural characterizations, including Scanning/Transmission Electron Microscopy (SEM/TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and N2physisorption (Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET)) analyses, confirmed the successful construction of an intimate interfacial contact between g-C3N4and BiOCl. The optimized composite (15% g-C3N4/BiOCl), prepared via a one-step hydrothermal method, exhibited enhanced photocatalytic performance following pseudo-first-order kinetics described by the Langmuir–Hinshelwood model, with apparent rate constants of 0.166 min−1for MO and 0.519 min−1for RhB. Under visible-light irradiation, degradation efficiencies of 98% for MO (120 min) and 99% for RhB (35 min) were achieved, outperforming the pristine components. Complementary optical and electrochemical analyses indicate improved light absorption and charge-separation efficiency in the heterojunction system. In addition, the photocatalyst demonstrated good operational stability over four consecutive cycles, maintaining 91.70% activity for MO and 99.76% for RhB. Overall, this work highlights the synergistic photocatalytic g-C3N4/BiOCl heterojunction and provides a valuable insight to guide the design of advanced materials for pollutant remediation.
