Graphical The product control of C6 aldose toward C6, C4 and C2 alditols have been achieved, which have depended on the well-matched between retro-aldol condensation and hydrogenation process driving by temperature, H 2 pressure and injection modes. Alcohols have a wide range of applicability, and their functions vary with the carbon numbers. C6 and C4 alditols are alternative of sweetener, as well as significant pharmaceutical and chemical intermediates, which are mainly obtained through the fermentation of microorganism currently. Similarly, as a bulk chemical, C2 alditol plays a decisive role in chemical synthesis. However, among them, few works have been focused on the chemical production of C4 alditol yet due to its difficult accumulation. In this paper, under a static and semi-flowing procedure, we have achieved the product control during the conversion of C6 aldose toward C6 alditol, C4 alditol and C2 alditol, respectively. About C4 alditol yield of 20 % and C4 plus C6 alditols yield of 60 % are acquired in the one-pot conversion via a cascade retro-aldol condensation and hydrogenation process. Furthermore, in the semi-flowing condition, the yield of ethylene glycol is up to 73 % thanks to its low instantaneous concentration.

The present work deals with the one-pot conversion of C6 sugars to methyl glycerate and glycolate via a cascade of retro-aldol condensation and oxidation processes catalyzed by using MoO3 as the Lewis acid catalyst and Au/TiO2 as the oxidation catalyst in methanol. Methyl glycerate (MGLY) is the product of C6 ketose (fructose), while methyl glycolate (MG) is produced from C6 aldose (mannose, glucose). It is found that a good one-pot match between two reactive processes is the key to the production of MGLY and MG with high yield (27.6% MGLY and 39.2% MG). A separated retro-aldol condensation and oxidation process greatly decreases their yields, and even no MGLY can be obtained in this separated process. We attribute this to high instability of glyceraldehyde/glycolaldehyde and their different reaction pathways which mainly depend on whether acetalization of retro-aldol products (glyceraldehyde and glycolaldehyde) occurs with methanol or not. This result opens a new prospect on the accumulation of C3 products other than lactate from biomass-derived carbohydrates.

Hydrolysis of cellulose into C 6 sugars is the starting point and entry point for biomass refining and is an important pathway for biofuel production. However, biomass-based 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a highly catalytic promising but underutilized organic carboxylic acid. In this paper, we investigated the use of easily recoverable FDCA as a catalyst for the hydrolysis of cellulose to produce C 6 sugars in a γ-valerolactone/water (GVL/H 2 O) green solvent system. FDCA has high inherent acidity (pKa = 2.76) and stability with unique solubility in aqueous solutions and many solvents. These properties allows it to meet both high temperature solubility for efficient homogeneous hydrolysis reactions and low temperature crystallization catalysts for high purity recovery. This process not only solves the problem of solid-solid mass transfer between solid acid and cellulose which limits the hydrolysis rate, but also eliminates the problem of difficult separation and recovery of liquid acid catalysts. The results showed when initial concentration of microcrystalline cellulose was 0.7 wt%(equivalent to 7 g/L), and the initial dosage of FDCA was 2.0 wt%, the maximum yield of C 6 sugars reached 72.9% (40.1% glucose and 32.8% fructose) in GVL/H 2 O (60/40, V/V) with a reaction at 200 °C for 30 min. More importantly, FDCA can achieve 80% recovery and >99% spectroscopic purity recovery. This study reveals the potential of FDCA as a catalyst in the catalytic conversion of biomass, which provides a new pathway for the green and efficient conversion of biomass resources.

It remains a challenging task for the efficient conversion of carbohydrates to value-added chemicals at concentrated feedstock solution. In this contribution, the acid-catalyzed processing of high-concentration C5/C6 sugars (180 g/L) in the ethylene glycol (EG) solvent system was investigated, and prominent discrepancy was noticed between C5 and C6 sugars. A large amount of liquefied products was achieved in the concentrated C6 sugars EG solution, whereas the main products in the case of C5 sugars were found to be solid humins. The reaction mechanism studies revealed that EG can shelter fructose and reaction intermediates (5-hydroxymethylfurfural and levulinic acid) from the cross-polymerization and self-etherification reactions, thereby reducing the generation of solid humins during the fructose liquidation process. However, in the case of xylose, the copolymerization between EG and furfural (FF) generates a solid resin, thus rendering a high solid product yield. Moreover, the produced FF–EG resin was found to be a polymer with high molecular weight formed by connecting the furan ring and the alkyl structure through an ether bond. This finding provides insights into the acid-catalyzed conversion of concentrated C5/C6 sugars in EG, facilitating rationally designed processes for the valorization of concentrated carbohydrates.
