Porous organic nanocages (POCs) have received great concern in diverse areas recently. However, a long reaction time as well as a toxic catalyst or solvents are still used to synthesize POCs, which may limit their broad applications. In addition, the synthesis of modified POCs will largely promote and expand their applications. Here we report a rapid, green, and catalyst-free method to synthesize model nano-POC CC3R and modified CC3S to tune their selectivity and to expand their applications in chiral gas chromatographic (GC) separation of many challengeable chiral alcohols. The nanosized CC3R is successfully synthesized via an ethanolic refluxing method within 4 h without any toxic catalyst or inert gas protection. The prepared CC3R coated capillary column provides good resolution and selectivity to diverse chiral alcohols. The mirrored CC3S and hydroxyl-modified CC3R–OH are also designed and synthesized via the ethanolic refluxing method to tune their selectivity and resolution for chiral alcohols. The introduction of hydroxyl groups into CC3R–OH nanocages largely enhanced their hydrogen-bonding forces to chiral alcohols, leading to the improved resolution and selectivity for chiral alcohols, which revealed the promise of modified POCs in chiral separation. This work may promote the synthesis, modification, and chiral chromatographic application of POCs.
Porous organic cages (POCs) have attracted extensive attention due to their unique structures and tremendous application potential in numerous areas. In this study, an enantioselective potentiometric sensor composed of a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) membrane electrode modified with CC3-R POC material was used for the recognition of enantiomers of 2-amino-1-butanol. After optimisation, the developed sensor exhibited enantioselectivity towardS-2-amino-1-butanol (logKS,RPot= −0.98) with acceptable sensitivity, and a near-Nernstian response of 25.8 ± 0.3 mV/decade within a pH range of 6.0–9.0.Keywords:enantioselective potentiometric sensor;2-amino-1-butanol;chiral porous organic cage;CC3-R;PVC membrane electrode
Metal-organic framework glass shows great promise in gas separation applications, however, its inherent low porosity poses significant challenges to achieve the enhanced membrane permeability. In this work, we developed novel self-standing crystal-glass composite membrane via melt quenching process of porous organic cages and coordination polymer glasses. The resulting (CC3) n /( a g Zn-P-dmbIm) 1-n membranes effectively combines the high porosity of CC3 with the excellent film-forming property of Zn–P-dmbIm glass, enabling efficient CO 2 /CH 4 separation. Specifically, CO 2 molecules are preferentially adsorbed into the CC3 channels, followed by rapid permeation through the membrane, while the size exclusion restricts CH 4 molecules transport through the membranes. The obtained (CC3) 0.05 /( a g Zn-P-dmbIm) 0.95 membrane achieves a high CO 2 permeability of 9358 Barrer, a CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity of 24.2, and demonstrates 24-h operational stability. This study not only broadens the application scope of coordination polymer glasses in gas separation membranes but also provides novel insights for the design of high-performance crystal-glass composite membranes.
