In the process of carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), carbon dioxide is in long-term contact with metal pipelines and devices. Therefore, in the CCUS environment the corrosion of carbon dioxide to metals limits the service life. Herein we have explored the failure of epoxy (EP) coating in the CO 2 corrosion environment. Based on this, a unique g-C 3 N 4 -ESO-EP anti-corrosion coating suitable for CCUS conditions was prepared by using graphene-C 3 N 4 (g-C 3 N 4 ) nanosheet and epoxy silane oligomer (ESO) one-step method. The semiconductor g-C 3 N 4 prepared by the secondary thermal stripping method provides plentiful CO 2 adsorption sites and prevents the diffusion of corrosive ions (gathered state CO 2 , CO 3 2− , HCO 3 − , H + ) in the EP coating. The CO 2 gas permeability of g-C 3 N 4 -ESO-EP film (with thickness of 100 μm) is approximately 45.94% lower than that of EP film. After immersion in 1.0 M acid corrosion environment, the protection efficiency of g-C 3 N 4 -ESO-EP coating is 99.99%. After adding ESO, the “bridging effect” formed at the interface reduces the interface defects between the resin and the nano-sheet, and synergistically enhances the adhesion between the coating and the substrate. The g-C 3 N 4 -ESO-EP coating has passed the test of severe simulated CCUS corrosion environment (4 days in 3.0 MPa CO 2 and 3.5 wt% NaCl solution). The |Z| 0.01Hz value of g-C 3 N 4 -ESO-EP coating after immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution for 120 days maintained 1.73 × 1011 O cm 2 , indicating the coating has long-term corrosion resistance. This work provides a new and simple method to improve the CO 2 resistance of EP coating and reveals the importance of functional composite coating for metal protection in CCUS process.

The combination of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and ionic liquids (ILs) to create porous ionic liquids (PILs) is highly significant for efficient carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) capture and the advancement of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies. To further investigate the CO 2 capture characteristics of different PILs, two different-sized ZIF-8 structures and two functionalized ILs were prepared. Additionally, the enhancement factor of the reaction process was calculated using the dual-film theory and mass transfer coefficient. The results demonstrated that the original [PMIm]Cl had low CO 2 absorption capacity at ambient temperature and pressure, whereas the functionalized ILs had a maximum CO 2 capture capacity of approximately .31 mol/mol, with the 20 wt% concentration of tetraethylene pentamine-2-methylimidazole ([TEP][MIm]) exhibiting the highest CO 2 capture capacity of around 1.93 mol/mol. The synthesized PILs demonstrated a maximum CO 2 capture capacity of approximately 2.22 and 2.16 mol/mol at 20 and 10 wt% ionic concentrations, respectively, with a porous ionic liquid addition of 1.0/100 g. The corresponding enhancement factors were 1.53 and 1.59, respectively. These findings have significant implications for CCUS technology.

The escalating global demand for energy and the urgent need to mitigate climate change have spurred the development of next generation carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) techniques. This study introduces novel amine-functionalized silica nanoparticles (PEI@SiO2-KH550 NPs) as a high-performance CO2 carrier for CCUS applications. The nanoparticles were synthesized via a facile two-step modification process: grafting 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH550) onto silica nanoparticles, followed by coating with polyethyleneimine (PEI). This design significantly enhances CO2 absorption capacity by enriching the surface amine groups, so more CO2 will be carried into the target formation, interact with the oil and be stored underground. The resultant nanofluid (0.8 wt% concentration) demonstrated exceptional CO2 uptake (∼100 cm3 under ambient conditions in 40 minutes) and dispersion stability (zeta potential: +38.21 mV). Rheological analyses revealed its shear-thinning behavior, ensuring injectivity in porous media. Remarkably, CO2-saturated nanofluid reduced the dynamic interfacial tension (IFT) between crude oil and water from 19.24 mN m−1 to 7.82 mN m−1, primarily attributed to nanoparticle adsorption at the oil–water interface and in situ generation of surface-active carbamates. In addition, the pressure drop experiment revealed that the presence of PEI@SiO2-KH550 in the aqueous phase could significantly promote the CO2 diffusion rate and facilitate the mass transfer. Besides, molecular dynamics simulations demonstrated that PEI@SiO2-KH550 enhanced the CO2 saturated-nanofluid/crude oil interaction through impacting the interfacial energy (IFE), the radial distribution function (RDF) of light and heavy oil components, the interface thickness and the CO2 diffusion coefficient. Core flooding experiments validated the dual effectiveness of the developed nanofluid, achieving 79.8% oil recovery (10% higher than the carbonated water) and 48.6% CO2 sequestration rate (16.7% higher than carbonated water). The innovation lies in the nanoparticles' scalable synthesis, dual functionality (CO2 capture and interfacial modification), and compatibility with harsh reservoir conditions. This work may provide enlightening insights for integrating CO2-enhanced oil recovery (EOR) with CO2 geological storage, advancing next-generation CCUS technology.

As critical infrastructure for carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) and large-scale energy storage, subsurface salt caverns are seriously challenged by fluid-induced sediment mobilization during the supplementary debrining. Conventional bulk resin consolidation often causes severe viscous fingering, uneven consolidation, and pore clogging under hypersaline conditions. Here, we develop a foam-templated hybrid polymer gel co-stabilized by silica nanoparticles, polyvinyl alcohol, and the zwitterionic surfactant. The key novelty is the use of foam as a transient transport template that redistributes the resin phase and promotes selective cementation at grain-contact points instead of indiscriminate pore filling. This nano-reinforced gel system remained stable under hypersaline conditions (24% NaCl), and temperatures ranging from 20–80 °C. Micro-CT analysis showed that this selective templating preserved an interconnected pore network with a porosity above 45% and a CT-derived permeability of approximately 1.18 D, while reducing binder consumption by 55.6% relative to bulk resin injection. Crucially, a 1:200 geometrically scaled, velocity-matched pilot model demonstrated that this gel strategy limited sediment entrainment below 0.5% and reduced fluid discharge by 45.9%. These results establish a material-efficient consolidation strategy that combines sediment stabilization with permeability preservation, providing a promising solution for safer supplementary debrining in salt-cavern CCUS and energy-storage operations.

Carbonic anhydrases (CAs) has garnered increasing attention in carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) due to their ecological friendliness. However, most of them suffer susceptibility to deactivation in harsh conditions. Herein, a reliable dataset was adopted for creating ancestral CAs through an optimized ancestral sequence reconstruction (ASR) method. After prescreening, the ancestor AncCA19 was obtained and successfully expressed. The hydration activity of AncCA19 was as high as 58,859 WAU/mg, with the optimum temperature and pH obtained by esterase assay at 100 ℃ and 9, respectively. AncCA19 had the longest half-life (1.7 h) at 95 ℃ compared with existing CAs. After 2 weeks’ incubation in artificial seawater at 30 ℃ or 25.0 % N-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) at 60 ℃, the activities remained above 47,370 WAU/mg and 6,596 WAU/mg, respectively. Thus, AncCA19, as a novel benchmark of CAs, exhibits exceptional stability in a variety CCUS applications, establishing a versatile candidate for effective CO 2 capture.

CO 2 enhanced oil recovery is the most realistic carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology to fit the green and low-carbon development concept. During CO 2 injection, gas channeling is a key problem to limiting displacement efficiency, and foam has shown great advantages in sealing channeling technology. However, conventional surfactant-stabilized CO 2 foam is difficult to maintain for a long time. In this paper, CO 2 foam was developed with a single long-chain viscoelastic surfactant (erucyl dimethyl amidopropyl betaine, EAB). Stability mechanism and dynamic evolution of structure were studied using multiple light scattering method. Then, the aggregation and adsorption behaviors of EAB were determined by rheology experiments, dynamic light scattering, cryogenic transmission electron microscopy, and dilatational rheology. The results showed EAB has excellent CO 2 foam performance, and initial volume and the half-life of foam could reach 330 mL and 272 min. Liquid drainage and bubble coalescence of foam were delayed due to the formation of viscoelastic liquid phase and interface. Liquid film thickness was maintained at about 10 µm after 2 h and interfacial dilational modulus was above 25 mN/m, which showed high surface repair efficiency and liquid storage capacity. Apparent viscosity of EAB solution decreased from 89 to 15 mPa·s as the temperature increased, which accelerated the process of water evaporation and liquid drainage. Only enough EAB molecules could effectively reduce initial surface tension from 70 to 56 mN/m to ensure good interfacial properties of foam. At high salt concentration, surface adsorption process to reach equilibrium was extended from 300 to 1400 s and dilational modulus fluctuated between 5 and 20 mN/m, which indicated surface activity and surface repair ability of EAB were inhibited. This study can deepen the understanding of aggregation and adsorption behavior for viscoelastic surfactants and broaden their application in oilfield development.

In this study, we present an innovative intelligent polymer sealant designed to mitigate CO2 leakage during underground geological storage (CCUS). This sealant is formulated by cross-linking CO2-responsive polymers, specifically acrylamide (AM) and N-[3-(dimethylamino) propyl] methacrylamide (DMAPMA), with polyethylenimine (PEI) serving as the cross-linking agent. The polymer sealant’s characteristics were systematically investigated, varying the CO2-responsive polymer content (1.5 wt %) and PEI content (0.1–0.6 wt %). A comprehensive analysis encompassing the rheological properties, thermal behavior, conductivity, and microstructures was conducted. Experimental results indicate that the polymer sealant exhibits excellent injectability, rapid response kinetics, thermal stability, and robust mechanical strength. Upon encountering CO2, the polymer system undergoes a transition from sol to gel state, forming a surface-smooth, uniformly porous three-dimensional (3D) network skeleton structure. Remarkably, the gel’s modulus remains relatively unaffected by the shear frequency. Core fluid displacement experiments demonstrated a substantial sealing efficiency of 73.6% for CO2 and an impressive subsequent injection water sealing rate of 96.2%, underscoring its superior sealing and migration performance. In conclusion, the proposed CO2-responsive gel sealant exhibits an exceptional potential for successful utilization in CCUS operations. This advancement introduces a novel avenue to enhance the effectiveness of CO2-responsive gel sealants, thereby contributing to the advancement of CO2 leakage mitigation strategies in geological storage scenarios.
