A bifunctional composite H5PV2Mo10O40@MOF-808(Ce): Preparation, characterization, and performance in the decontamination of chemical warfare agent surrogates CEES and DMNP

Yupeng Zhai,Jialin Yu,Lijuan Zhang,Yunshan Zhou,Yuxu Zhong,Ying Yang,Yong’An Wang

In this study, an α-Keggin-type polyoxometalate H 5 PV 2 Mo 10 O 40 was loaded into the adamantane cage (18 Å) of MOF-808(Ce) by an immersion method to obtain composites with different polyoxometalate loadings. The effects of the H 5 PV 2 Mo 10 O 40 loading in the composite, the reaction time, and the quantity of the composite during the decontamination of the erosive agent surrogate, 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES) were investigated, and the optimized catalytic conditions for CEES were determined. The decontamination rate of 4 μL CEES reached 93.91% in 120 min using 40 mg of optimized composite, and the decontamination rate of 160 μL of the nerve agent surrogate, methyl paraoxon (DMNP) reached 100% in 25 min using 5 mg of the composite. Decontamination of CEES and DMNP by the composite followed first-order reaction kinetics. The half-life ( t 1/2 ) and kinetic rate constant ( k ) of these two reactions were 27.77 min and −0.02496 min −1 and 1.895 min and −0.36569 min −1 , respectively. The composite exhibited good decontamination performance after four replicate experiments. The results showed that CEES was oxidized to CEESO, while DMNP was hydrolyzed to p -nitrophenol and dimethyl phosphonate in the presence of the composite, showing that the proposed composite is an effective bifunctional catalyst for the selective oxidation and hydrolysis of chemical warfare agent surrogates.

A Benzimidazole-Containing Covalent Organic Framework-Based QCM Sensor for Exceptional Detection of CEES

Zi-Hao He,Shi-Da Gong,Song-Liang Cai,Yi-Lun Yan,Gui Chen,Xin-Le Li,Sheng-Run Zheng,Jun Fan,Wei-Guang Zhang

Mustard gas poses a substantial concern for homeland security, and the development of sensors for facile, rapid, highly sensitive, and selective detection of a mustard gas simulant is much desirable. Herein, a new benzimidazole-containing covalent organic framework (COF), termed BABE-TFPy COF, was synthesized by the Schiff base condensation of 1-(4,7-bis(4-aminophenyl)-1H-benzoimidazole-2-yl)ethan-1-ol (BABE) with 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(4-formylphenyl)pyrene (TFPy). By virtue of its crystallinity, high porosity, excellent chemical stability, and abundant accessible benzimidazole sites, an unprecedented COF coated quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor was judiciously fabricated for the detection of various volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Remarkably, the resultant BABE-TFPy COF coated QCM sensor exhibited significantly higher sensitivity to 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES), a typical hazardous mustard gas simulant, than those of the other common VOCs. Moreover, the frequency changes of the COF coated QCM sensor were linearly related to the concentrations of CEES vapor within the range of 5.6–19.7 ppm, and derived a strikingly low detection limit of 0.96 ppm (signal-to-noise ratio = 3), rendering it an extraordinary QCM sensor for the detection of CEES. The enthalpy change indicated by the temperature-varying microgravimetric experiment, along with the Gaussian theoretical calculation, highly suggests a dual-hydrogen bonding formed between the BABE-TFPy COF and the CEES molecule accounts for such an exceptional recognition of CEES.

In situ laser-assisted decoration of Au nanoparticles on 3D porous graphene for enhanced 2-CEES sensing

Ling Zhang,Jie Yang,Junchao Yang,Jianan Wei,Chuan Zhou,Jiang Zhao,Qibin Huang

The fabrication of gas-sensing devices with high sensitivity and low limit of detection (LOD) for monitoring chemical warfare agents and their simulants is of great importance. Metal oxide-based semiconducting nanomaterials and their heterojunctions hold great promise in chemiresistive gas sensing. However, the demands of high working temperature, integration on interdigitated electrodes (IDEs) and requirement of additional heaters impede their popularity. This work demonstrates in situ laser-assisted preparation of Au-decorated laser-induced graphene (LIG/Au) hetero-material as a flexible and effective near-room-temperature 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (2-CEES) sensor. The structure of the sensor was simplified via omitting the IDE and an additional heating module. After optimizing the concentration of the HAuCl4 precursor solution and power of secondary scribing, the LIG/Au-0.1 M gas sensor exhibited an enhanced response of 7.85‰ to 1.0 ppm 2-CEES, which is twice that of pure LIG. Furthermore, its LOD was as low as 5.8 ppb. The sensing mechanism analysis revealed that the decoration of Au nanoparticles enriched the active sites of LIG/Au-0.1 M and provided catalytic and sensitization effects. The present study not only provides an appealing 2-CEES gas sensor but also demonstrates an effective method for large-scale fabrication of other high-performance sensing devices.

Synthesis of Mo–doped symbiotic mixture of Bi2WO6 and Bi6O6(OH)3(NO3)3·1.5H2O nanosheets with enhanced photocatalytic degradation for mustard gas simulator 2-CEES

Yang Haoguo,Guo Yijun,Han Shitong,Xi Hailing,Lin Huaxiang,Yuan Rusheng,Ding Zhengxin,Long Jinlin,Lin Qun

Mustard gas is a kind of erosive poison with great harm and used as a chemical weapon since World War. It has suggested that the photocatalytic technology is an effective method to eliminate it. Because the small difference in molecular structure between 2-CEES and Mustard gas, and the less toxic of 2-CEES, 2-CEES is often used as a simulator to evaluate the photocatalytic activity of catalysts. In this work, symbiotic mixture of Bi 2 WO 6 and Bi 6 O 6 (OH) 3 (NO 3 ) 3 ·1.5H 2 O nanosheets doped with Mo (Mo-B-B) have been synthesized by a facile hydrothermal treatment. The samples were characterized by XRD, DRS, XPS, SEM, TEM, Raman, and PL. The photocatalytic activity of the samples was evaluated by measuring the degradation of 2-CEES under visible light irradiation. The results showed that the doped Mo reduce the Eg of bare symbiotic mixture and improve the separation efficiency of photo-generated carriers that is beneficial to photocatalytic activity. The optimum amount of doped Mo is 5% that exhibits the best activity for degradation for 2-CEES.

Effects of temperature and humidity on the performance of a PECH polymer coated SAW sensor

Yong Pan,Lin Zhang,Bingqing Cao,Xufeng Xue,Weiwei Liu,Caihong Zhang,Wen Wang

The influences of environment, such as temperature, humidity and interfering gases, on the performance of a surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensor in the detection of 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES) were invested. The 150 MHz SAW dual delay lines were used, coated with a poly(epichlorohydrin) (PECH) thin layer, and CEES was detected under different concentrations. Linear correlation between the frequency-shift and the exposure time of the sensor to CEES could be observed, and the limit of CEES could be detected as low as 1.5 mg m−3. Under different temperature (0–50 C°) and humidity (30–80% RH) conditions, CEES was detected by the fabricated SAW sensor coated with PECH, the frequency shifts were measured and the performance of the sensor was evaluated. The results proved that temperature and humidity were the most important factors to influence the performance of SAW sensors; with the decreasing of temperature and the increasing of humidity, there would be larger frequency shifts. In the interference experiments, it was found that most gases existing in the environment in high concentrations would not influence the detection of CEES. Then, the SAW sensor having been fabricated was kept under the conditions of 25 °C and 35% RH for 18 months to further verify the quality, and CEES was detected every so many months. It proved that the performance of the sensor would decrease about 16.39% after 18 months. Although it reflected the attenuation of the sensor to some extent, the sensor was still in good condition. Additionally, the related mechanisms were also discussed.

Fe-Ni-MOF-derived NiFe2O4/NiO heterostructure for detection of 2-CEES at ppb level

Duo Zhang,Ying-Nan Dou,Rui Gao,Xian-Fa Zhang,Hui Zhao,Xiao-Li Cheng,Shan Gao,Ying-Ming Xu,Li-Hua Huo

Rapid, highly sensitive detection of mustard gas is a critical requirement in public safety and national defense. However, achieving highly sensitive, ppb-level detection of mustard gas under low-power conditions remains a significant challenge. Focusing on the typical blister agent simulant 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (2-CEES), a solvothermal method was employed combined with controlled thermal treatment to fabricate an ultrathin porous NiFe 2 O 4 /NiO nanosheets heterostructure sensor derived from an Fe-Ni-MOF in-situ grown on a ceramic tube in this study. This material possesses uniformly distributed intimate heterogeneous interface, a high specific surface area (95.8 m 2 ·g −1 ), and abundant surface active sites, thereby significantly enhancing its adsorption and catalytic oxidation capability toward 2-CEES. At a low operating temperature of 130 °C, the sensor demonstrates a high response of 41.5 toward 10 ppm 2-CEES, a rapid recovery capability of only 84 s, and a low detection limit of 20 ppb, along with excellent selectivity, humidity resistance, reproducibility, and long-term stability. Through systematic characterization including XPS, in-situ DRIFTS, TPD, and DFT calculations, the multi-step catalytic oxidation pathway of 2-CEES on the composite surface is elucidated, along with the mechanism by which the heterostructure enhances gas-sensing performance via band structure modulation, interfacial charge transfer, and the built-in electric field. This study offers both new materials and novel insights for the development of low-power, highly sensitive sensors for trace detection of chemical warfare agents.

In situ construction of hierarchical Fe2O3 nanotube arrays for real-time detection and degradation of 2-CEES gas

Baosheng Li,Xue Ma,Yuying Xin,Zoltán Major,Xianfa Zhang,Tingting Wang,Lihua Huo,Xiaoli Cheng,Yingming Xu

Real-time detection and degradation of chemical warfare agents have great importance in both human healthcare and environmental protection. Herein, hierarchical Fe 2 O 3 nanotube arrays were constructed by a simple in situ solvothermal method for effective monitoring of 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfur enigma (2-CEES). The resultant Fe 2 O 3 sensor exhibited ultrahigh response (9.6) and short response time (3.7 s) to 10 ppm 2-CEES at 170 ℃. The sensor also behaved low detection limit (30 ppb), good stability, and high moisture resistance . Notably, Fe 2 O 3 nanotube arrays demonstrated high degradation capacity (95.2%) (100 ppm, 10 min). Such excellent performance of the portable Fe 2 O 3 sensor for 2-CEES comes from the synergistic effect of multiple microstructural features , active sites, and surface-adsorbed oxygen species at operating temperature. The 2-CEES sensing mechanism of Fe 2 O 3 nanotube arrays has been discussed in detail. This work offers guidance for designing high-performance sensing materials to realize efficient detection of chemical warfare agents.

Ultrafast Degradation and High Adsorption Capability of a Sulfur Mustard Simulant under Ambient Conditions Using Granular UiO-66-NH2 Metal–Organic Gels

Chuan Zhou,Bo Yuan,Shouxin Zhang,Guang Yang,Lin Lu,Heguo Li,Cheng-an Tao

Zirconium-based metal–organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) have been considered as prospective materials for the degradation of nerve chemical warfare agents (CWAs) but show poor catalytic performance toward blister agents. Moreover, the powder issues and the poor adsorption capability also remain as the major challenges for the application of Zr-MOFs in practical CWA detoxification. Herein, a series of defected granular UiO-66-NH2 metal–organic gels are synthesized via adjusting the amount of added concentrated hydrochloric acid for the decontamination of 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (2-CEES), a sulfur mustard simulant. The half-life of 2-CEES decontaminated by defected granular UiO-66-NH2 metal–organic gels can be shortened to 7.6 min, which is the highest reported value for MOFs under ambient conditions. The mechanism of decontamination is that the amino group on the linkers in UiO-66-NH2 MOGs undergoes a substitution reaction with 2-CEES to yield 2-(2-(ethylthio)ethylamino)terephthalic acid, which is less toxic and fixed in the frameworks. The recycling test corroborates that the granular UiO-66-NH2 xerogels possess good stability and reusability. Static adsorption and desorption tests show that UiO-66-NH2 xerogels possess a high 2-CEES vapor adsorption capacity of 802 mg/g after exposure for 1 d and only 28 wt % desorption capacity after air exposure for 7 d. The dual function of ultrafast degradation and high adsorption capability provide a firm foundation for using UiO-66-NH2 xerogels as a future protection media.
