In this paper, a sensing probe (denoted as CFE) for tumor-biomarker 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) was firstly synthesized. Its sensing mechanism was confirmed as the recovery of fluorescein structure via an ester-exchange reaction, accompanied with emission turn on effect towards 5-HIAA. To improve photostability and minimize self-quenching/aggregation of CFE molecules, they were loaded into silica based MCM-41 spheres and UCNPs-cored (up-conversion nanoparticles) MCM-41 spheres. Corresponding composite samples, denoted as CFE@MCM-41 and CFE@MCM-41@UCNPs, were carefully discussed to confirm their structure, including XRD , N 2 adsorption and desorption, SEM/TEM and TGA . The energy transfer from secondary excitation source UCNPs to probe CFE was confirmed by Forester radius calculation and emission lifetime comparison. Sensing performance of CFE@MCM-41 and CFE@MCM-41@UCNPs were finally discussed in detail. They showed emission turn on effect towards 5-HIAA with good selectivity. CFE@MCM-41 showed linear response, while CFE@MCM-41@UCNPs showed exponential response, resulting in a warning signal when analyte concentration was higher than a critical level. The reason for this exponential response was discussed and explained. Their practical sensing result for human urine test was compared to HLPC method and literature methods, which confirmed the promising result of CFE@MCM-41 and CFE@MCM-41@UCNPs.

This paper investigates the electrocaloric effect (ECE) in polymer nanocomposite films containing ferroelectric poly (vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene-chlorofluoroethylene) [P(VDF-TrFE-CFE)] terpolymer matrix and lead-free nanopowders. The nanopowders include pure BaTiO 3 and rare-earth substituted Ba 0.94 R 0.04 TiO 3 , where R = La, Nd, Sm, prepared by a modified sol-hydrothermal method. The substitution influences the lattice parameters, but all samples exhibit a perovskite-type tetragonal phase. The dopant enhances the relaxation behavior of the matrix and decreases the current. Using the Maxwell equations, the ECE performance is systematically studied for all samples. As the rare-earth ionic radius decreases, the Curie temperature of the nanocomposite increases and the dielectric constant decreases. The isothermal entropy changes (Δ S ), adiabatic temperature changes (Δ T ), cooling energy densities ( Q ), and electrocaloric strengths versus temperature exhibit different dependences on electric field ( E ). The results demonstrate that rare-earth doping can effectively modify the ECE. Our composites achieve large EC strength values (|Δ T |/|Δ E |) of 7 to 21 μK m kV −1 over a wide temperature range of 25 to 60 °C and electric field range of 750 to 1250 kV cm −1 and provide typical examples of polymer ECE materials containing rare-earth doped nanopowders. Graphical abstract The preparation of the polymer nanocomposites and the adiabatic temperature changes and the corresponding electrocaloric strengths of the samples.

In this study, rod-like TiO 2 filler was synthesized one-step hydrothermal method and was incorporated into P(VDF-TrFE-CFE) polymer matrix to obtain composites with high dielectric constant. It is found that the morphology and content of TiO 2 fillers play a vital role in tailoring the performance of the as-fabricated composites. The rod-like TiO 2 assembled by numerous nanoparticles maintained its primary shape and homogenously distributed in the matrix, thus achieved sophisticated interface and strong interfacial adhesion with P(VDF-TrFE-CFE) polymer, which together contributed to a dramatic improvement in permittivity of composites. Typically, the dielectric constant of composite with 10 vol% rod-like TiO 2 reaches 160 at 100 Hz, in contrast to 102.5 for the composite with 10 vol% commercial TiO 2 and 47 for pristine P(VDF-TrFE-CFE). This study provides a solution for obtaining high-k dielectric composites with low dielectric loss, which is highly desired for advanced electronic devices.

Electrocaloric (EC) cooling represents a promising solid-state approach for next-generation thermal management. However, achieving substantial temperature modulation remains a challenge due to intrinsic material limitations and inefficient energy conversion. Herein, we focus on microstructure regulation to enhance thermal conductivity and EC performance. A hydroxyl-functionalized Ba0.63Sr0.37Zr0.01(Ti0.999Mn0.001)0.99O3 (BSZMT-OH) and h-BNNS-OH composite was designed, with enhanced interfacial hydrogen bonding to optimize electric field response in a P(VDF-TrFE-CFE) matrix. Finite element analysis (FEA) and piezo response force microscopy (PFM) reveal strengthened interfacial coupling, which facilitates rapid domain switching kinetics by amplifying tetragonal P4mm phase responses. These enhancements yield a peak EC temperature change (ΔT) of 1.59 K under a low electric field of 40 MV/m in the optimized 6% BSZMT-OH@4 h-BNNS-OH (6@4BNNS) composite. Integrated into a double-layer four-section electrocaloric cooling (DL 4 EC) device, it cools from 70 to 23 °C in 23 s, outperforming water cooling. Our findings offer insights into EC mechanisms and present a high-performance thermal management strategy.

Polymer dielectrics with high dielectric performances and superior discharge energy capability are highly desirable for advanced electrostatic capacitor applications. However, the paradoxical relationship between dielectric polarization and electric breakdown behavior generally hinder their further enhancement in energy storage performances. Herein, polymer blended composite films with high energy storage capability were successfully fabricated by blending together poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) polymer and poly(vinylidene fluoride–trifluoroethylene–chlorofluoroethylene) (P(VDF–TrFE–CFE)) terpolymer. The P(VDF–TrFE–CFE) terpolymer has a high dielectric constant to provide a large electric displacement under an applied electric field far below its breakdown field, which is anticipated to modulate the dielectric polarization behavior of PVDF polymer when blended in different proportions. Consequently, the polymer blended composite film consisting of 20 wt% (P(VDF–TrFE–CFE)) terpolymer exhibits a high discharge energy density of 13.63 J cm−3 at an enhanced breakdown strength of 480 MV m−1. This obtained high discharge energy density is 84% higher than the pure PVDF film and 582% higher than a commercialized biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP). Large interfacial polarization and strong interaction of polymer chains between the PVDF polymer and P(VDF–TrFE–CFE) terpolymer may contribute to the tunable dielectric constant and electric breakdown strength, thus promoting the energy storage capability. This work establishes a facile, but effective approach to achieve the high energy storage capability of PVDF polymer-based flexible composite films for capacitive energy storage applications.

Polymer dielectrics are promising materials for electrostatic capacitors because of their high dielectric strength and fast charge-discharge capability. However, improving the energy-storage density of fluorinated ferroelectric polymers remains challenging because enhanced polarization is often accompanied by reduced breakdown strength. In this work, all-organic poly(vinylidene fluoride- trifluoroethylene-chlorofluoroethylene)/poly(methyl methacrylate) [P(VDF-TrFE-CFE)/PMMA] dielectric films are prepared by solution blending and casting. By tuning the blend ratio, the intermolecular interactions and crystallization behavior of the films are systematically regulated, resulting in distinct changes in their electrical properties. The results suggest that dipolar interactions between PMMA carbonyl groups and polar groups in P(VDF-TrFE-CFE) disturb chain packing and suppress crystallization, thereby reducing dielectric loss and improving breakdown stability. At the optimized composition, the P(VDF-TrFE-CFE)/PMMA (50/50 wt.%) film delivers a dischaged energy density of 17.12 J/cm3 with an energy-storage efficiency of 88.11%. Further γ-irradiation of the optimized film at doses of 10-150 kGy leads to additional improvement in dielectric energy-storage performance. These results demonstrate that regulating intermolecular interactions and crystalline morphology through all-organic blending and irradiation is an effective strategy for developing high-performance polymer dielectrics.

The thermal failure bottleneck in high-power polymer capacitors severely limits their energy storage performance breakthroughs. Composite materials combining excellent thermal management capabilities with high energy storage density represent an effective solution to this problem. This study proposes an integrated energy storage-thermal management design strategy: using a relaxor ferroelectric polymer P(VDF-TrFE-CFE) as the matrix and incorporating Ba 0.6 Sr 0.4 TiO 3 (BST) nanoparticles with varying weight fractions (0–23.08 wt.%) to construct high-performance polymer-based nanocomposites. By synergistically regulating the interfacial polarization effect and polarization entropy change, dual breakthroughs in electrocaloric (EC) cooling and energy storage performance are achieved. This study employs infrared thermal imaging technology to directly measure the EC response of composite films. Experimental results show that when the BST weight fraction is 16.67 wt.%, the composite achieves optimal overall performance: under an electric field of 110 MV m −1 , the recoverable energy density W rec reaches 4.26 J cm −3 , which is a 20.34% improvement over the pure polymer, with the η of 70.17%; under an electric field of 100 MV m −1 , the EC temperature change reaches 5 °C, representing a 32.63% enhancement compared to the pure polymer. Therefore, this work achieves a synergistic enhancement of dielectric energy storage and EC cooling performance within a single material system.
