The anodic degradation process of carbon fibres (CFs) in carbon-fibre-reinforced-polymer (CFRP) composites was first examined under varying operating currents, particularly in the pore solution of seawater and sea sand concrete. A range of analytical techniques were employed to provide insights into the formation and characteristics of the decomposition products generated in the electrolyte and precipitate. The electrochemical reactions of anions and carbon occurred under the different potential significantly influence the corrosion behaviour of CFRP. The production of diverse forms and quantities of carbon oxides primarily arises from the oxidative deterioration of CFs' graphitic structure. These results reveal the anodic degradation behaviour of CFs, which contributes to the anodic degradation mechanism of CFRP materials, especially when exposed to different current levels in high-chloride and high-alkaline conditions.

With the extensive research on ester-exchanged vitrimer, laminates utilizing vitrimer as matrix have garnered increasing attention due to their healability for achieving long-term durability of the composite structure. However, current research on the healing of mode II delamination for vitrimeric CFRP (vCFRP) laminates remains notably limited. In this study, the ENF tests were implemented to acquire load–displacement curves of eight typical vCFRP laminates with various interfaces. The results indicated a pronounced impact of the stacking interface on the fracture toughness values, the R -curves, fiber bridging effect, and crack growth behaviours . The continuous 0 ° fiber hindered the upward migration for the laminates with 0 ° / / θ ° interface, while the discontinuous θ 1 ° fabric had a lower in-plane strength and were more prone to cracking for the laminates with θ 1 ° / / θ 2 ° interface. Subsequently, the healing efficiencies of specimens were characterized. The healed laminates undergone three shear delamination damages could still achieve a substantial recovery of about 76.33 %.

Adhesive bonding is frequently used to connect CFRP structures due to its lightweight, easy implementation and high production efficiency. However, the bonding performance of adhesive is far from satisfactory as dimension and complexity of CFRP structures increase. In this paper, a new bonding strategy for CFRP structures via introducing soy protein isolate modified carbon nanotubes (SPI-CNTs) both in the epoxy resin adhesive and on the bonding parts' surface is proposed. Results showed that SPI can effectively improve CNTs' dispersion on the two areas, notably enhancing the bonding performance of the adhesive. When 0.3 wt% SPI-CNTs was added in the adhesive, its adhesive shear strength increased to 12.76 MPa, which was 72 % higher than the unmodified CNTs/epoxy adhesive. Based on this concentration, the SPI-CNTs was deposited uniformly on the surface of the CFRP adherends via bath sonication and resulted in a maximum shear strength of 15.59 MPa, which was 22.2 % greater than the untreated ones. Based on the above condition, the Mode I fracture toughness G 1c and the Mixed-Mode I/II fracture toughness G c could reach a maximum of 0.31 and 0.44 N/mm respectively, which were 117 % and 97 % higher than the pure epoxy adhesive . The present work shows a new pathway for the effective bonding of CFRP structural components used in the aerospace industry.

In order to improve the interfacial strength and toughness of aluminum alloys and CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastics) hybrid laminates, modified resin with lower porosity was prepared by adding nano silica treated with silane coupling agent into epoxy resin. Al/CFRP hybrid laminates with modified resin were prepared by physical liquid deposition method and hot-press process. The strength and toughness of Al/CFRP hybrid laminates with modified resin were evaluated by tensile shear test and end notch fracture (ENF) test. The experimental results showed that the interfacial shear strength of Al/CFRP hybrid modified resin laminates is 18.8 ± 0.8 MPa and the fracture energy is 1546.33 ± 10.26 J /m 2 , which is 28.76 % and 15.38 % higher than that of Al/CFRP hybrid laminates with raw resin, respectively. The well-dispersed silicon nanoparticles effectively mitigate internal stress during the cross-linking process of the modified resin, thereby diminishing the dimensions of microcracks within the modified resin. The transition layer of the modified resin interface formed a cooperative and smooth structure. This structure can ensure that the transition of elements in the interface layer is smooth, and it is not easy to cause stress concentration. The formation of new bonds (C-Si bonds) at the interface of the modified resin indicates an enhancement of bonding strength at the interface, superimposing upon van der Waals forces, thereby enhancing the adhesive strength of the modified resin interface.

This study designs novel hierarchical microstructures of CFRP/Al interface with ZnO-NanoStructures (ZnO-NS) and Modified Resin Pre-Coating (RPC) to in-situ form nano-mechanical interlocking . ZnO-NSs with different growth times are fabricated by hydrothermal method , while the traditional RPC technology is modified by mixing resin-hardener-acetone with different ratios. Combining ZnO-NS and modified-RPC, difficultly infiltrated nanogaps among ZnO-NSs can be fully filled with resin to form flawless interface. Results show that the shear force firstly increases and then decreases with increasing growth time. As compared with no-ZnO-NS, 6 h-ZnO-NS presents a 207.5% higher shear force. When using ZnO-NS with RPC, an obvious reduction confirms that nanogaps are difficult to be infiltrated even through RPC technology. It is interesting that the shear property of sample with the modified RPC firstly increases and then decreases as the ratio changes. An improvement around 275.0% in shear force is identified for the modified-RPC with the ratio of resin, acetone and hardener (3:1:0.6) due to in-situ formed stronger nano-mechanical interlocking. The strengthening mechanisms are analyzed based on failure modes with different ZnO-NS-bridging length. The proposed method is of significance in lightweight material joining technology.

Aircrafts are increasingly fabricated by carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites, because of the excellent specific stiffness and strength . However, lower electrical conductivity , leads to the drawback of the aircraft to lightning strike protection (LSP) changing from conductive metals to insulate composites. Herein, a sesame-cookie topography silver nanoparticle modified carbon nanotube paper (SMCNP) protective layer was developed to enhance LSP efficiency on the CFRP . The integrated material, SMCNP, could be molded directly on the surface layout of CFRP without any insulating adhesives. By contrast, carbon nanotube paper (CNP) and SMCNP were systematically studied on the influence of LSP and the possible protection mechanisms were discussed. Sesame-cookie silver nanoparticle not only enhances the electric conductivity, from 323 S/cm to 3600 S/cm in 14.14 wt%, but also provides a melted silver skeleton for extending current conduction along protection layer illustrated from the XPS and Raman analysis. SMCNP-CFRP maintains 92.1% residual mechanical property after simulated LS interaction which is much higher than that unprotected CFRP of 65.9%.

The wetting state is a fundamental property of a material surface, yet achieving precise control over this property remains a formidable challenge. Mastery of wetting behavior can impart tailored functionalities to surfaces, such as liquid repellency, anti-fouling, and directional liquid transport. Despite the potential benefits, strategies for rapid and reliable modulation of various wetting states have remained elusive until now. In this study, an innovative one-step laser-based strategy that enables precise and rapid manipulation of surface wetting states on carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) is presented. This approach allows for the creation of hydrophilic surfaces characterized by the Wenzel state, hydrophobic surfaces with a mixed Cassie-Baxter/Wenzel state, and robust superhydrophobic surfaces featuring a stable Cassie-Baxter state. The realization of a stable Cassie-Baxter state stems from the concurrent formation of hierarchical micro/nanostructures and the enrichment of low surface energy components. Critically, the resulting superhydrophobic CFRP surfaces with the Cassie-Baxter state exhibit exceptional stability, minimized adhesion, and superior anti-icing and de-icing properties. These findings provide both fundamental insights and a practical platform for the rapid development of non-wetting, multifunctional surfaces, significantly expanding the applicability of CFRP across diverse engineering domains.

Regulating the interlaminar structure is an effective approach to tailoring the viscoelastic response of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates. PEI/GnP@PEI nanofiber membranes prepared by electrospinning are embedded into CFRP laminates to modify the interlaminar region. The influence of membrane addition on interlayer microstructure is investigated, and the viscoelastic behavior of the main transition zone (MTZ) of the laminates with hybrid layup configuration is parameterized. Two quantitative indicators, the loss-modulus integral area (LMIA) and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the loss factor, are proposed to characterize energy-dissipation behavior and damping-response broadening of the laminates, respectively. A Williams–Landel–Ferry (WLF)-based dual-element viscoelastic model is established to describe the dynamic viscoelastic response within the MTZ. The correlation between the membrane microstructure and the MTZ-based quantitative indicators is analyzed. The results show that moderate GnP addition refines the PEI fibers, improves membrane coverage, and promotes a more uniform interlaminar network. Compared with CF/EP, the LMIA values of PEI-G0 and PEI-G1.5 increase by 64.1% and 86.3%, respectively. PEI-G2 shows a lower LMIA than PEI-G1.5, but it remains 68.5% higher than that of CF/EP. This work provides a basis for designing CFRP interleaves with improved stiffness retention and energy-dissipation behavior under dynamic thermal–mechanical conditions. Graphical

Interlaminar fracture behavior and viscoelastic properties play a critical role in determining the service performance of woven carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (WCFRP) composites. In this work, three nanofillers with distinct morphologies, including particle-type nanozinc oxide (nano-ZnO), rod-type carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and flake-type graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), were incorporated into WCFRP laminates. Double cantilever beam (DCB) and end-notched flexure (ENF) tests, along with dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), were performed to evaluate the Mode I and Mode II interlaminar fracture toughness and viscoelastic behavior. Results indicated that CNTs exhibited the most effective toughening under Mode I loading, yielding an improvement of 24.46%. While nano-ZnO showed limited enhancement in Mode I interlaminar fracture toughness, it increased the Mode II toughness by 29.89%. GNPs displayed a distinct concentration-dependent effect on interlaminar properties, with the 0.5 wt.% GNPs modification achieving the optimal toughening efficiency under Mode II conditions, representing an increase of 70.86%. DMA results further revealed that GNPs significantly enhanced the stiffness and thermal stability of the composites, whereas CNTs were more conducive to improving damping performance. Conversely, nano-ZnO exerted a negligible influence on the overall viscoelastic properties. Combined with microstructural characterization of the nanofillers and fracture surfaces, the potential regulatory mechanisms of different nanofillers on the interlaminar performance were comparatively analyzed. As the requirements of aerospace technology become more rigorous, the performance of solid rocket motor (SRM) cases needs to be further optimized. In the present study, a co-curing technique was used to fabricate carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP)/ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) composites whereby the properties of CFRP/EPDM composites were adjusted by varying the temperature, heating time and type of vulcanizing agent to obtain the optimum manufacturing process. The results of crosslink density (3.459 × 10−4mol/cm3) tested by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), a 90° peel strength test (2.342 N/mm), and an interlaminar shear test (ILSS = 82.08 MPa) demonstrated that the optimum mechanical properties of composites were obtained under the temperature 160 °C heated for 20 min with the curing agent DCP/S. The interfacial phase and bonding mechanism of composites were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) further indicated that EPDM/DCP/S had favorable thermal stability. This will provide valuable recommendations for the optimization of the SRM shell preparation process. Keywords:carbon fiber reinforced polymer;epdm;co-curing;preparation optimization

The microstructure of carbon fiber—including its crystal structure and defect characteristics—is a critical factor governing its mechanical properties and ensuring the long-term stability of carbon fiber-reinforced composites. However, advancements in carbon fiber–resin matrix interface reinforcement technology have altered the stress distribution in CFRP, leaving the evolution mechanisms of carbon fiber microstructure still largely unexplored. These knowledge gaps pose significant challenges to the development of high-performance carbon fiber-reinforced composites. Therefore, this study explored the evolution of the carbon fiber microstructure in the interface-reinforced CFRP under cyclic tensile loading based on polydopamine coating interface-reinforced CFRP (PDA-CFRP). Mechanical experimental evaluation found that the mechanical properties and fatigue properties of PDA-CFRP were significantly improved due to the polydopamine coating-reinforced interface between carbon fiber and epoxy resin. In addition, after tensile fatigue testing, it can be clearly observed that the defect level in PDA-CFRP is lower than that in CFRP, as well as the reduction of (002) crystal plane spacing. These results suggest that cyclic tensile loading leads to an increase in carbon fiber defects and a decrease in the (002) interplanar spacing in CFRP, and that interface modification can reduce these evolutions by uniformly distributing stress. This study not only reveals theoretical insights into the damage and fracture of carbon fibers in CFRP under cyclic tensile loading but also provides theoretical guidance for the design of high-performance CFRP.

The recovery of high-value carbon fibers from carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites is essential for ensuring a sustainable future. In this work, a simple and eco-friendly approach was presented for the chemical recycling of anhydride-cured epoxy-based CFRP composites with a mixed solution of monoethanolamine (MEA) and potassium hydroxide (KOH). In this solvent catalyst system, the resin matrix was decomposed by cleaving the ester bonds . Thus, a high CFRP composite decomposition ratio of 99% was achieved at ∼160 °C within 60 min under ambient pressure . The recovered carbon fibers (CFs) had a clean surface and retained more than 95% of their original stiffness and strength . Moreover, one of the highlights of this process was that the excess MEA solvent and degraded epoxy resin (DER) were recovered from the degraded organic products (DOP) by simple distillation. The DER was reused in combination with the original epoxy resin system to prepare new resin material with good mechanical properties , forming a closed-loop chemical recycling route. The advantages of this method include facile reaction conditions, near-complete recovery of CFs and solvent, and the absence of harmful solid waste, demonstrating that this recycling process has a high degree of environmental friendliness.
