Surface property modification of catalyst support is a straightforward approach to optimize the performance of supported noble metal catalysts. In particular, oxygen vacancies and hydroxyl groups play significant roles in promoting noble metal dispersion on catalysts as well as catalytic stability. In this study, we developed a nanoflower-like TiO 2 -supported Pd catalyst that has a higher concentration of oxygen vacancies and surface hydroxyl groups compared to that of commercial anatase and P25 support. Notably, due to the distinctive structure of the nanoflower-like TiO 2 , our catalyst exhibited improved dispersion and stabilization of Pd species and the formation of abundant reactive oxygen species, thereby facilitating the activation of CO and O 2 molecules. As a result, the catalyst showed remarkable efficiency in catalyzing the low-temperature CO oxidation reaction with a complete CO conversion at 80 °C and stability for over 100 h.

Copper-ceria sheets catalysts with different loadings of copper (2 wt.%, 5 wt.% and 10 wt.%) supported on ceria nanosheets were synthesized via a deposition–precipitation (DP) method. The prepared catalysts were systematically characterized with various structural and textural detections including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectra , transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS), and temperature-programmed reduction by hydrogen (H 2 -TPR), and tested for the CO oxidation reaction. Notably, the sample containing 5 wt.% of Cu exhibited the best catalytic performance as a result of the highest number of active CuO species on the catalyst surface. Further increase of copper content strongly affects the dispersion of copper and thus leads to the formation of less active bulk CuO phase, which was verified by XRD and H 2 -TPR analysis. Moreover, on the basis of in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy ( in-situ DRIFTS) results, the surface Cu + species, which are derived from the reduction of Cu 2+ , are likely to play a crucial role in the catalyzing CO oxidation. Consequently, the superior catalytic performance of the copper-ceria sheets is mainly attributed to the highly dispersed CuO x cluster rather than Cu-[O x ]-Ce structure, while the bulk CuO phase is adverse to the catalytic activity of CO oxidation.

Supported noble metal catalysts are widely applied in energy and environmental catalytic reactions; however, noble metal particles are prone to sintering under reaction conditions. Herein, we demonstrate that the introduction of Ru ions in the LaNiO3 perovskite support produces strong interface bonding between the Pt nanoparticle catalyst and LaNiO3 support, resulting in super anti-sintering performance of the Pt nanoparticle catalyst. A novel method is developed to synthesize the supported noble metal catalysts by doping Pt and Ru ions into the lattice of LaNiO3 and then reduction in a hydrogen atmosphere. The different formation energies of both metal ions in the LaNiO3 lattice induce selective reduction of Pt ions to generate Pt nanoparticles, while Ru ions remained in the LaNiO3 support. Using CO oxidation as a probe reaction, we find that supported Pt nanoparticles on Ru doped LaNiO3 hardly change after undergoing a high temperature of 600 °C for 250 h, and the average particle size only increases from 2.1 to 2.4 nm; moreover, the high catalytic activity is maintained. In contrast, without Ru ions, the Pt particles grow from 2.9 to 10.9 nm, and the activity decreases significantly. Experimental and theoretical evidence indicates that Ru ions not only form stable Pt–O–Ru ionic bonds but also enhance the Pt–O bonding on LaNiO3.

The simultaneous activation of surface lattice oxygen and dioxygen is key to transition metal oxide-based catalytic CO oxidation systems. However, the reaction is difficult at room temperature owing to the high metal–oxygen bond energy. This study presents a triboelectric plasma–transition metal oxide catalytic system driven by a triboelectric nanogenerator, which realizes CO oxidation reaction at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. Among the transition metal oxides evaluated, MnO2 nanostructures exhibited an optimal CO oxidation activity of 0.24 mmol·g–1·h–1 and a low energy consumption converted per mole CO of 6.0 × 103 kJ. For the activation of both surface lattice oxygen and dioxygen, multiple reaction pathways with barriers ranging from 0.37 to 2.43 eV have been revealed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance, and density functional theory simulation. These catalytic reaction phenomena have been explained by an extended Mars–van Krevelen mechanism, in which multiple pathways with various barriers were overcome by the electrons in the plasma with a uniform and broad distribution probability. This work provides an efficient strategy for the conversion and utilization of mechanical energy for chemical synthesis.

Metal-support interaction has been one of the main topics of research on supported catalysts all the time. However, many other factors including the particle size, shape and chemical composition can have significant influences on the catalytic performance when considering the role of metal-support interaction. Herein, we have designed a series of CuxO/ZnO catalysts as examples to quantitatively investigate how the metal-support interaction influences the catalytic performance. The electronic metal-support interactions between CuxO and ZnO were regulated successfully without altering the structure of CuxO/ZnO catalyst. Due to the lower work function of ZnO, electrons would transfer from ZnO to CuO, which is favorable for the formation of higher active Cu species. Combined experimental and theoretical calculations revealed that electron-rich interface result from interaction was favorable for the adsorption of oxygen and CO oxidation reaction. Such strategy represents a new direction to boost the catalytic activity of supported catalysts in various applications.
