Kinetic analysis of CO2 hydrate formation in the aqueous solutions of transition metal chlorides

Fa-Ping Liu,Ai-Rong Li,Cheng Wang,Yu-Ling Ma

CO 2 hydrate technology can be applied to seawater desalination. However, the kinetics of CO 2 hydrate formation were inhibited in the aqueous solution with inorganic salts, and the kinetic mechanism of CO 2 hydrate formation for inorganic salts with different metal cations and anions was still unclear. In this work, CO 2 hydrate nucleation and growth were studied in aqueous solutions of metal chlorides. Instead of Na + and K + ions, CO 2 hydrate nucleation was promoted in the presence of Ni 2+ , Mn 2+ , Zn 2+ and Fe 3+ ions due to the co-ordination bonds between transition metal ions and water molecules to enhance the formation of the critical crystal nuclei. The induction time was increased by 61.1% in aqueous solution with 0.32 mol/L NaCl, while it was shortened by 55.6% in FeCl 3 aqueous solution at the same concentration of Cl − anions. In the process of CO 2 hydrate growth, Cl − ions played a more important role than the metal ions in affecting the stability of CO 2 hydrate cages. The gas storage capacity was reduced by 10.3% in the presence of NaCl, and was lower than that of other metal chlorides. Cl − anions were absorbed on the hydrate surface and involved in hydrate cages to inhibit the hydrate growth due to the hydrogen bonds between the Cl − ions and water molecules of the hydrate cages. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Enhanced CO2 injection and hydrate conversion in unsealed submarine sediments for CO2 hydrate sequestration by CO2-H2O emulsion injection

Hong-Nan Chen,Yi-Fei Sun,Ming-Long Wang,Jin-Rong Zhong,Dan Rao,Chang-Yu Sun,Guang-Jin Chen

CO 2 hydrate provides an important alternative solution for CO 2 geological sequestration. However, fingering flow of liquid CO 2 and hydrate membrane effect can severely restrict flowing CO 2 conversion to hydrate. Here we report an enhanced CO 2 hydrate sequestration method via CO 2 -H 2 O emulsion injection, and its effectiveness has been proven in a three-dimensional system. Compared to liquid injection, emulsion injection demonstrated higher displacement efficiency of pore water and larger sweep area, finally increasing CO 2 sequestration density by 142 %. The highly dispersed CO 2 micro-droplets significantly increase CO 2 -H 2 O contact capability and weakens the hydrate membrane effect, thereby greatly increasing the rate and quantity of hydrate conversion. For different water contents, the highest CO 2 sequestration density of 148 kg/m 3 is achieved at 40 % water content, with hydrated CO 2 accounting for 71.45 %. The excellent performance of CO 2 -H 2 O emulsion provides a green and high-efficient approach to CO 2 hydrate sequestration.

Experimental study on CO2 hydrate formation in the presence of TiO2, SiO2, MWNTs nanoparticles

Airong Li,Dan Luo,Lele Jiang,Jie Wang,Yi Zhou

A series of experiments on CO2 hydrate formation were carried out in the presence of titanium dioxide (TiO2), silicon dioxide (SiO2), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) nanoparticles. The effects of these nanoparticles on induction time, final gas consumption, and gas storage capacity have been investigated at the temperature of 274.15 K and the initial pressure of 5.0 MPa.g. The induction time of CO2 hydrate formation was remarkably shortened to 12.5 min in the presence of 0.005 wt% MWNTs nanoparticles. The high thermal conductivity and heat capacity of MWNTs nanoparticles presented better heat transfer, and large surface area provided more suitable sites for heterogeneous nucleation of CO2 hydrate.

Sodium p-Styrenesulfonate as a Remarkable Kinetic Promoter for CO2 Hydrate Formation: Promotion Efficiency and Mechanism

Jingyu Lv,Kang Tan,Fei Wang,Chuanyu Dang,Mengting Sun

Slow CO2 hydrate formation kinetics restricts the development and industrial application of hydrate-based carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) technology. Here, sodium p-styrenesulfonate (SSS) was employed as a novel promoter for CO2 hydrate formation, and its efficiency, promotion mechanism, and recyclability were systematically studied. Results indicated that SSS improved the hydrate formation kinetics remarkably and yielded the highest CO2 uptake of 8.033 ± 0.348 mmol mL–1 as well as the rapidest hydrate growth rate (HGR) of 0.437 ± 0.075 mmol mL–1 min–1 at concentrations of 50 and 100 mmol L–1. SSS under a moderate concentration also presented high efficacy; 6 mmol L–1 SSS led to a short induction time of 36.37 ± 32.14 min, a rapid HGR of 0.307 ± 0.029 mmol mL–1 min–1, and a high CO2 uptake of 7.036 ± 0.472 mmol mL–1. Morphological observation revealed that the promotion effects were mainly attributed to the climbing hydrate growth caused by capillary effect, which was markedly influenced by the sidewall hydrophilicity and the SSS concentration. Stronger hydrophilicity of the sidewall and a higher SSS concentration both favored the liquid movement, boosted the climbing hydrate growth, and improved the formation kinetics. Additionally, SSS did not produce foam when hydrates dissociated and kept admirable promotion performance in at least six repeated cycles, indicating its excellent recyclability.

Coupling Amino Acid with THF for the Synergistic Promotion of CO2 Hydrate Micro Kinetics: Implication for Hydrate-Based CO2 Sequestration

Xuejian Liu,Yan Li,Guang-Jin Chen,Dao-Yi Chen,Bo Sun,Zhenyuan Yin

CO2 capture and sequestration are broadly recognized as the most effective technology for reducing CO2 emissions and mitigating global climate change. In this regard, hydrate-based CO2 sequestration (HBCS) has been proposed as an effective method for long-term safe and stable CO2 sequestration. It is a promising technology for reducing the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere and achieving carbon neutrality. However, one major challenge related to HBCS technology is the lack of understanding of how to improve the formation kinetics of CO2 hydrate effectively. Herein, in this study, we identified the synergistic promotion effect on CO2 hydrate formation when a low-dose thermodynamic promoter (tetrahydrofuran, THF) is coupled with an environment-friendly kinetic promoter (l-methionine, l-Met). Based on the kinetic experiments and the morphological observation, 0.6 mol % THF coupled with 0.1 wt %l-Met yields the optimal CO2 gas uptake. In situ Raman spectra reveal the mechanism of the observed two-step growth behavior at the molecular level, where low-dose THF promotes the initial CO2-THF sII hydrate nucleation and growth in the solution and l-Met promotes the subsequent CO2 sI hydrate growth along the surface of the reactor. Our study unveils the underlying synergistic mechanism when thermodynamic and kinetic promoters are coupled for CO2 hydrate formation. The results provide guidance for the identification and use of novel bio-friendly thermodynamic and kinetic promoters and are beneficial to a series of sustainable hydrate-based technologies when fast CO2 formation is required.
