Features of nanoparticle composite-enhanced CO2 foam-flooding systems for low-permeability reservoirs

Liu Yong,Zhao Fajun,Niu Ruixia,Cao Sheng,Liu Lei,Song Yarui

This study examined an enhanced foam-flooding system incorporating nanoparticles and polymers under geological conditions of a reservoir of the Shu 16 block in the Yushulin oilfield. The system is mainly comprised of an anionic foaming agent (CQS-1) and a nonionic surfactant (FH-1). We screened 17 foams by evaluating their foaming volumes and foam half-lives using a Waring-blender and dynamic foam analysis methods, and nanoparticles were selected after examining each foam’s concentration, the ratio of the main agent to the auxiliary agent, and the dosage of the foam stabilizer. Then, we analyzed the selected system’s microstructure and rheological properties, including the adaptability of the reservoir to its temperature resistance, salt tolerance, and adsorption resistance. As a result, this study supports the field application of CO2 foam flooding.

Effect of Surface Hydrophobicity of Fluorescent Nanopolymer Microspheres on the Stability of CO2 Foam

Hongbin Yang,Haocong Li,Haizhuang Jiang,Yubin Zhang,Luyao Xing,Xin Kang,Huazheng Wang,Shuhe Zhang,Haobin Shi,Wanli Kang

Nanopolymer microspheres have been widely studied in the development of low-permeability reservoirs as an effective material to improve foam stability. However, there are few studies on the foam stability mechanism of nanopolymer microspheres. In this work, the effect of surface hydrophobicity of fluorescent nanopolymer microspheres PARC(Flu-Ac) on the stability of CO2 foam was investigated by using foam performance as an evaluation index. The mechanism of foam stabilization by PARC(Flu-Ac) with different degrees of hydrophobicity was clarified by studying the drainage rate, micromorphology, interfacial rheology of foam, and adsorption behavior of microspheres on the foam liquid film. The results show that PARC(Flu-Ac)-5 microspheres with neutral wettability have the best foam stabilization effect. At 94 °C, the foam volume of CO2 foam is 630 mL and the foam half-life is 30.12 min. PARC(Flu-Ac)-5 microspheres have a high desorption energy and can stably adsorb at the gas–liquid interface to form a solid layer. The microspheres improve the mechanical strength of the foam and reduce the direct contact of the fluid, thus providing space resistance for thinning the liquid film and the diffusion of gas between bubbles. In addition, the microspheres can slow the thinning rate of the liquid film through the release of free water. The stability of the foam is significantly improved. This study further clarifies the enhancement mechanism of nanopolymer microspheres on the stability of CO2 foam, which has excellent guiding significance for the application of CO2 foam in low-permeability oil fields.

Study on the mechanism of pseudo-interpenetrating network enhancing recyclable VES-CO2 foam system and the key performance as fracturing fluid

Nanxin Zheng,Jingyi Zhu,Zhaozhong Yang,Chao Song,Xiaogang Li,Yufeng Long,Liangping Yi,Jianlin Lai,Jingnan Ge

Responsive viscoelastic surfactant (VES) stabilized CO 2 foam fracturing fluids (VES-CO 2 foam fracturing fluids) can be recycled through external stimuli, which holds significant value in the petroleum industry. However, stability issues and unclear high-pressure performance of responsive VES-CO 2 foam fracturing fluids severely impact their application. In this study, we developed a celluouse nanofibers (CNF) enhanced VES-CO 2 foam fracturing fluid that is recyclable. The stability mechanism of the CNF-enhanced responsive VES-CO 2 foam fracturing fluid was revealed through interfacial and bulk property analyses, and its performance under high pressure was investigated. The results show that CNF can entangle with worm-like micelles to form a more complex pseudo-interpenetrating network, increasing the viscosity of the foaming liquid from 2732.16 mPa·s to 3343.37 mPa·s and extending the half-life of drainage from 3720 s to 5520 s. After foam formation, the pseudo-interpenetrating network structure encapsulates the foam film, further delaying foam coarsening and enhancing foam stability. Interfacial property analysis indicates that the addition of CNF can improve the adsorption efficiency of responsive surfactant molecules at the interface. Moreover, there is a strong hydrogen bond interaction between CNF and responsive surfactant molecules. Under the effect of hydrogen bonds, CNF can enhance the lateral interaction of molecules at the interface, thereby increasing the resistance of the liquid film to external disturbances. Performance evaluations show that, under high-pressure conditions, the incorporation of CNF reduces the proppant settling rate from 2.33 to 1.75 cm/min, and in the supercritical CO 2 (scCO 2 ) environment, the settling rate is further reduced to 0.9 cm/min, primarily due to the formation of the pseudo-interpenetrating network. The foam fracturing fluid can be recycled by introducing CO 2 /N 2 , and under laboratory conditions, after 7 cycles, there was no significant change in the performance of the foam fracturing fluid. Additionally, the average formation damage rate of the VES-CO 2 recyclable foam fracturing fluid is 10.43 %, significantly lower than the damage rate of guar gum fracturing fluid (25.54 %), demonstrating favorable applicability in unconventional reservoirs. This study provides a new approach for developing a high-performance, low-damage, low-cost, and recyclable foam fracturing fluid system.

Enhanced CO2 foam stabilization with fluorescent nano polymer microspheres for improved oil recovery: Insights from microscopic and macroscopic displacement studies

Hongbin Yang,Haocong Li,Hao Xu,Ruichao Wang,Yubin Zhang,Luyao Xing,Xin Chen,Liang Peng,Wanli Kang,Bauyrzhan Sarsenbekuly

CO 2 foam flooding is an effective enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technique that has been extensively studied for development of low-permeability reservoirs. However, during its application, poor foam stability often leads to severe gas channeling, resulting in lower recovery. In order to improve the foam stability, a CO 2 foam system was constructed by using fluorescent nano polymer microspheres (PARC(Flu-Ac)-5) and anionic surfactant sodium α-alkene sulfonate (AOS). The macroscopic and microscopic stability of the CO 2 foam system stabilized by PARC(Flu-Ac)-5 was investigated through its rheological properties, adsorption characteristics, and microscopic morphology. Furthermore, the sweep range of different foam systems and the stability of the foam in the channel were explored through the microscopic visualization model. Finally, the plugging and oil displacement performance of the CO 2 foam system stabilized by fluorescent nano polymer microspheres was evaluated through dynamic core flooding experiments conducted under CO 2 flooding reservoir conditions. Thus, the oil displacement mechanism of fluorescent nano polymer microspheres stabilizing CO 2 foam was revealed. The experimental results demonstrate that PARC(Flu-Ac)-5 microspheres greatly enhance the stability of CO 2 foam by adsorbing at the gas-liquid interface. It remains stable for 30 min when formed with 5 % oil content. The microspheres' distinctive elastic deformation characteristics enable their migration and subsequent plugging of the pores following foam rupture, thereby establishing a dual anti-gas channeling mechanism. The total recovery of CO 2 foam system stabilized by fluorescent nano polymer microspheres is 46.71 %. The oil displacement effect is better than that of the single AOS foam system, and the total recovery rate is increased by 12.02 %. By adsorbing at the gas-liquid interface of foam liquid film, PARC(Flu-Ac)-5, acting as a foam stabilizer, enhances both the stability and oil resistance of foam within porous media. This adsorption behavior thereby enabling the foam to maintain its integrity upon encountering crude oil and preventing foam coalescence and defoaming. Concurrently, under the Jamin effect of the foam, the foam preferentially occupies the pore space in high permeability layers, and the injected fluid is diverted toward unswept regions following the plugging of high permeability pathways. Consequently, the sweep range and the driving ability of the subsequent foam to enter the blind end are increased, and the recovery rate of crude oil is improved. This work lays a theoretical foundation for the field application of polymer microspheres stabilized CO 2 foam system.
