Recently, SrTi 0.3 Fe 0.7 O 3−δ (STF) has been investigated as a highly stable oxygen electrode material for solid oxide electrochemical cells (SOCs) with a sufficiently low resistance for cell operation at temperatures of > 700 °C. However, in general, the STF electrode performance is limited at temperatures of ≤ 700 °C due to the low oxygen surface exchange coefficient, which is mainly caused by high Sr surface segregation. To improve the electrode performance, Sr 0.9 (Ti 0.3 Fe 0.7 )O 3−δ (A-STF) with an A-site-deficient design is developed to reduce the Sr content and thus reduce the Sr surface segregation, thereby providing a unique combination of excellent oxygen electrode performance and long-term stability. The A-site deficiency reduces the electrode polarization resistance by > 3 times at 600 °C and clearly improves the oxygen diffusion and surface exchange coefficients due to the decrease of Sr surface segregation. The A-STF electrode exhibits stable performance in the fuel cell and electrolysis modes at 1 A cm −2 > 1200 h. The stability of STF-based oxygen electrodes in a CO 2 -enriched atmosphere is investigated, and the results indicate that A-STF exhibits excellent CO 2 tolerance.

The development of cathode materials with high oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity and stability in intermediate temperature (IT) environments is a key factor in the commercialization of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC). In this paper, the ORR activity of the cathode is improved by doping high-valent Sc 3+ ions at the B-site of the Sr 0.5 La 0.5 Co 0.8 Cu 0.2-x Sc x O 3–δ (x = 0, 0.02, 0.04), in which Sr 0.5 La 0.5 Co 0.8 Cu 0.18 Sc 0.02 O 3–δ (SLCCS2) shows the best electrochemical performance , and the area-specific resistance of SLCCS2 at 700 °C is only 0.047 Ω cm 2 , much lower than the 0.087 Ω cm 2 of Sr 0.5 La 0.5 Co 0.8 Cu 0.2 O 3–δ (SLCC), and the peak power density of SLCCS2 reached 1.098 W cm −2 , which is 1.84 times that of SLCC (0.598 W cm −2 ). In addition, SLCCS2 effectively reduces the thermal expansion coefficient , improves thermal matching with traditional electrolytes, and overcomes the problem of insufficient long-term SOFC stability caused by the high thermal expansion coefficient of Co-based perovskite to a certain extent. SLCCS2 also exhibits excellent CO 2 tolerance. Considering comprehensively, SLCCS2 is expected to become an IT-SOFC cathode material with development potential.

La 2 NiO 4+δ (LN)-coated PrBa 0.5 Sr 0.5 Co 1.5 Fe 0.5 O 5+δ (PBSCF) composite cathode, designated as PBSCF-LN, for the intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs) is prepared by solution infiltration , and investigated comparatively with single phase PBSCF cathode in the half and full cells using Ag and/or Pt paste as the current collector. Compared with Pt, Ag current collector results in a decrease of cathode polarization resistance ( R P ) by an order of magnitude, which suggests that Ag is electrocatalytically active and not suitable for the use of studying the cathode performance of IT-SOFCs. The R P value of PBSCF-LN cathode is significantly lower than that of PBSCF cathode, no matter whether Pt or Ag current collector is used for the measurement. High power densities ranging from 0.24 to 0.94 W cm −2 at temperatures between 600 and 750 °C are achieved using a full cell with PBSCF-LN cathode. Upon exposure to a CO 2 -rich atmosphere, carbonate particles are formed on the surface of PBSCF cathode, causing irreversible degradation of electrochemical performance. In contrast, the surface of PBSCF-LN cathode remains clean, and its performance degradation due to CO 2 adsorption is recoverable.

CO 2 -poisoning effect on cathodes is an unnegligible problem for commercial application of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). In order to enhance CO 2 tolerance of cathodes, partial replacement of Ba by Ca in BaCo 0·4 Fe 0·4 Zr 0·1 Y 0·1 O 3-δ (BCFZY) cathode is proposed in this study. The stability of Ba 0·95 Ca 0·05 Co 0·4 Fe 0·4 Zr 0·1 Y 0·1 O 3-δ (BCaCFZY) and BCFZY in CO 2 -containing atmosphere is investigated comparably. When tested in a symmetrical cell and exposed to air with 1% CO 2 or 10% CO 2 , the electrochemical performance of BCFZY cathode shows obviously degradation and carbonate particles are formed on the cathode surface . Exhilaratingly, the polarization resistance of BCaCFZY cathode is more stable and the cathode surface remains clean. The durability test in proton-conducting single cells further proves that the fine stability of BCaCFZY cathode can be achieved in air with 1% CO 2 atmosphere. In addition, thermodynamic analysis reveals the mechanism of Ca doping to improve stability. Ca dopant itself has a high CO 2 resistance and the introduction of Ca element reduces Ba segregation on surface. Base on the experimental results above, the BCaCFZY cathode is a promising candidate for SOFC applications .
