Sustained free chlorine-releasing polydimethylsiloxane/Ca(ClO)2 materials with long-lasting disinfection efficacy

Xiaofan Su,Yaqi Lin,Xingyu Hu,Xinzhi Tan,Yao Mai,Minyan Jiang,Ruitao Zhang,Fangjun Huo,Lei Liu,Weidong Tian,Li Xie

A novel sustained chlorine-releasing polydimethylsiloxane/Ca(ClO)2 (PDMS/Ca(ClO)2) material was fabricated by encapsulating Ca(ClO)2 in a PDMS matrix due to its high hydrophobicity and high chemical stability, which showed immediate-responsive and long-lasting antibacterial capabilities in aqueous conditions. Free chlorine could be released from the PDMS/Ca(ClO)2 after immersion in water for 2 min and could also be sustainedly released for 2 weeks, while the released concentration is negatively related to the duration time and positively with the initial Ca(ClO)2 contents. Additionally, Ca(ClO)2 powder as a filler significantly affects the crosslinking and pore size of PDMS. The PDMS/Ca(ClO)2 materials exhibited enduring antibacterial performance against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) in both planktonic and multispecies-biofilm status. It is expected that this PDMS/Ca(ClO)2 material and its similar composite would be promising candidates for wide sustainable disinfection applications in biomedical and industrial fields.

Distinct effects of hypochlorite types on the reduction of antibiotic resistance genes during waste activated sludge fermentation: Insights of bacterial community, cellular activity, and genetic expression

Jingyang Luo,Wenxuan Huang,Qin Zhang,Yang Wu,Fang Fang,Jiashun Cao,Yinglong Su

The effectiveness of hypochlorites (NaClO and Ca(ClO) 2 ) on the reduction of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) during waste activated sludge (WAS) fermentation was determined by the quantitative PCR. NaClO and Ca(ClO) 2 exhibited distinct effects on ARGs fates. Ca(ClO) 2 was effective in removing all investigated ARGs, and the efficiency was highly dose-dependent. Unexpectedly, the NaClO treatment attenuated ARGs with lower efficiency and even caused the propagation of certain ARGs (i.e . , aad A1 and tet Q) at higher doses. The extracellular polymeric substances dissolution and membrane integrity suggested that unstable NaClO had acute effects on bacteria initially, while it was ineffective to further attenuate ARGs released from hosts due to the rapid consumption of oxidative ClO - . Without lasting and strong oxidative stress , the microbial activities of tolerant ARGs hosts will partially recover and then contribute to the ARGs dissemination across genera. In contrast, solid-state Ca(ClO) 2 was slowly released and exhibited prolonged effects on bacteria by disrupting cell membranes and removing the susceptible ARGs released from hosts. Furthermore, bacterial taxa-ARG network analysis indicated that Ca(ClO) 2 reduced the abundance of potential hosts, and the metabolic pathway and gene expression related to ARGs propagation were significantly downregulated by Ca(ClO) 2 , which contributed to efficient ARGs attenuation.

Mechanisms of heavy metal migration and removal in sewage sludge by Fe2+/Ca(ClO)2/tannic acid conditioning and risk assessment

Weihao Zhu,Lian Zhang,Peicong Li,Wei Fang,Panyue Zhang

Sewage sludge treatment remains a critical environmental challenge due to its high moisture content and heavy metal contamination. The Fe 2+ /Ca(ClO) 2 /tannic acid (TA) combined conditioning has shown great performances on sludge dewatering, but its influence on heavy metal removal and risk assessment was unclear. In this study the speciation transformation of heavy metals and related mechanisms were comprehensively investigated. The results demonstrated that the sludge conditioning simultaneously enhanced sludge dewatering and promoted heavy metal removal under optimized conditions. Notably, Zn, Cd, and Ni were effectively removed from the sludge solid phase, with removal efficiencies of 39.12 %, 52.49 %, and 30.86 %, respectively. Moreover, the conditioning significantly reduced the ecological risk posed by heavy metals, as indicated by a marked decrease in comprehensive risk index from high to medium levels. The mechanisms involved in the combined effects of oxidation, acidification, and ion binding. Oxidation disrupted extracellular polymeric substance structure, while acidification increased surface positivity, enhancing heavy metal desorption. The Fe 2+ /Ca 2+ competed with heavy metals for binding sites. Additionally, pH reduction and TA chelation further facilitated the transfer of heavy metals into the liquid phase. As a result, the potential mobility index for heavy metals Zn, Cd, Ni, Hg, and As decreased by 33.93 %, 35.98 %, 21.40 %, 26.76 %, and 50.57 %, respectively. This study provides a promising strategy for the safe and resource-efficient utilization of sewage sludge.
