Novel Ca 2 MgWO 6 :Sm 3+ , Bi 3+ phosphor is synthesized by solid-state reaction method in air. Host Ca 2 MgWO 6 with excitation 300 nm emits blue light. Ca 2 MgWO 6 :Bi 3+ phosphor with excitation 300 and 338 nm emits yellow light. Ca 2 MgWO 6 :Sm 3+ phosphor with excitation 300 nm exhibits tunable emission from blue to red light by increasing Sm 3+ doping concentration from 0 to 8 mol%, however, only emits red light with excitation 407 nm. Ca 2 MgWO 6 :Sm 3+ , Bi 3+ phosphor with excitation 300 and 338 nm emits red light. The optimal Sm 3+ doping concentration is ∼5 mol% in Ca 2 MgWO 6 :Sm 3+ phosphor. After Bi 3+ ion is co-doped, luminescence properties of Ca 2 MgWO 6 :Sm 3+ phosphor can be improved obviously because of Bi 2 O 3 as fluxing agent role and energy transfer from Bi 3+ to Sm 3+ ions. The possible luminous mechanism of Ca 2 MgWO 6 :Sm 3+ , Bi 3+ phosphor is analyzed and explained by simplified energy level diagrams of WO 6 6− group, Bi 3+ and Sm 3+ ions.

In this study, Tm 3+ -doped Ca 2 MgWO 6 (CMWO) phosphors were prepared and thoroughly analyzed. The structure, luminescent and temperature-dependent behavior of the phosphors were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), photoluminescence (PL) and excitation (PLE) spectra, along with temperature-dependent PL spectroscopy . XRD and SEM analysis confirmed the successful preparation of a pure-phase double perovskite structured Ca 2 MgWO 6 phosphor with successful Tm 3+ doping. The PL spectrum indicates that the phosphor emits light under both 285 nm and 361 nm excitation. The PLE spectrum reveals that the optimal doping concentration of Tm 3+ for 285 nm excitation is 0.007, while for 361 nm excitation, it is 0.08. The phosphor was then tested for variable-temperature emission spectra , and its temperature-sensing performance was evaluated using the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) method. Under 361 nm excitation, the CMWO:0.08 Tm 3+ phosphor exhibited a maximum relative sensitivity ( S r(max) ) of 2.33 % K −1 at 348 K, within the temperature range of 198–348 K. When excited at 285 nm, the CMWO:0.007 Tm 3+ phosphor displayed strong temperature dependence in the range of 98–223 K, with an S r(max) of 14.71 % K −1 at 223 K, surpassing many thermometric phosphors reported in the literature. These results highlight the significant potential of CMWO:Tm 3+ phosphors as highly sensitive optical temperature sensors, particularly for low-temperature applications.

Novel double perovskite Ca 2 MgWO 6 :Bi 3+ (CMW:Bi 3+ ) yellow-emitting phosphor is synthesized by solid-state reaction method in air. Host Ca 2 MgWO 6 with excitation 297 nm emits blue light and the chromaticity coordinate is (0.169, 0.160). The spectroscopic properties of CMW:Bi 3+ phosphor are explained on the basis of the Bi 3+ (6s 2 )–W 6+ (5d 0 ) metal-to-metal charge transfer (MMCT) transition. CMW:Bi 3+ phosphor with excitation 338 nm shows yellow light and the chromaticity coordinate is (0.383, 0.477). Broad emission band peaking at ~550 nm of CMW:Bi 3+ phosphor is observed in the range of 400–780 nm due to the D → 1 S 0 radiative decay and the 3 P 1,0 → 1 S 0 transitions of Bi 3+ ion. Monitored at 550 nm, excitation spectrum of CMW:Bi 3+ phosphor including a strong excitation peak at ~338 nm covers the region from 200 to 400 nm owing to the Bi 3+ → W 6+ MMCT transition and the 1 S 0 → 3 P 1 transition of Bi 3+ ion. The optimal Bi 3+ ion actual content is ~0.38 mol%. Emission spectra of CMW:Bi 3+ phosphor with excitation 338 nm shows blue-shift with increasing temperature from 50 to 300 K owing to the influence of temperature to electron transfer . The possible luminous mechanism of CMW:Bi 3+ phosphor is analyzed by energy level diagram of Bi 3+ ion in solid including d 0 cation.

Rare-earth-doped luminescent materials have attracted extensive attention owing to their unique 4 f electronic configuration and optical properties. However, the research has largely remained confined to single application domains, and developing multifunctional luminescent systems and elucidating energy transfer mechanisms are essential for broadening their applicability. Herein, we select the double perovskite tungstate Ca 2 MgWO 6 as a host material, leveraging the intrinsic W-O charge transfer band to achieve efficient self-activated blue emission. The W-O charge transfer band further serves as an efficient energy transfer channel to activate the luminescence of lanthanide-based trivalent cations (Ln 3 + ), overcoming the limitation posed by mismatched excited-state energy levels among different Ln 3+ ions (i.e., Er 3+ , Ho 3+ , and Tm 3+ ). By introducing Yb 3+ as an energy sensitizer, the fluorescence intensity of Ln 3+ in visible and near-infrared regions under 980 nm excitation is significantly enhanced. Switching the excitation wavelength enables tunable photoluminescence signals, which leverage to design multimodal decodable anti-counterfeiting labels and information storage systems. Moreover, a sensitizer-mediated NIR-II ratiometric optical thermometer is constructed by means of phonon-assisted energy transfer, exhibiting a relative sensitivity of 0.52% K −1 . This work demonstrates a strategy for designing next-generation, high-performance lanthanide luminescent materials that can be employed in various sensing and photonics applications.
