Enhancement of piezoelectric properties with high Curie temperature in CaBi2Nb2O9 via MnO2 doping

Meng-si WANG,Yan ZHANG,Xiao-gang LUO,Lin TANG,Shan XIANG,Ru GUO,Xue-fan ZHOU,Ke-chao ZHOU,Dou ZHANG

MnO 2 -doped Ca 0.97 Bi 2.03 Nb 2 O 9 ceramics with greatly improved piezoelectric performance were prepared via conventional solid state sintering method. The effects of MnO 2 doping on the microstructure and electrical properties of Ca 0.97 Bi 2.03 Nb 2 O 9 ceramics were studied. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and Rietveld refinement revealed a reduction in orthorhombicity with MnO 2 doping, which contributed to the enhancement of the piezoelectric properties. Furthermore, the introduction of MnO 2 lowered the sintering temperature, thereby reducing the formation of oxygen vacancies in the ceramic. The optimal performance was achieved in the Ca 0.97 Bi 2.03 Nb 2 O 9 −0.3wt.%MnO 2 sample, exhibiting a piezoelectric coefficient ( d 33 ) of 13.6 pC/N, a DC resistivity of 3×10 6 Ω·cm at 500 °C, and a Curie temperature of 965 °C. Additionally, all doped samples demonstrated excellent thermal stability over a wide temperature range, from room temperature to 900 °C.

Achieving ultra-high resistivity and outstanding piezoelectric properties by co-substitution in CaBi2Nb2O9 ceramics

Biao Zhang,Liming Quan,Zhihong Luo,Qiantong Li,Jianming Deng,Shuhang Yu,Wangxin Li,Mingmei Lin,Feng Yan,Dawei Wang,Dongyan Yu,Changbai Long,Laijun Liu

CaBi 2 Nb 2 O 9 (CBNO) ceramics exhibit significant potential in the development of piezoelectric sensors suitable for extreme environments such as aerospace, metallurgy, and nuclear power plants. While previous studies have enhanced the piezoelectric response of CBNO ceramics, their insulating properties at high temperatures still require improvement. In this work, co-substitution of (Li 0.5 Bi 0.5 ) at A site and Mn at B site was designed to improve the electrical properties of CBNO ceramics. Defect dipoles induced by the bound between Mn and oxygen vacancies restrict the movement of oxygen vacancies at high temperatures. Meanwhile, co-substitution of Ca by (Li 0.5 Bi 0.5 ) reduces both the sintering temperature and volatilization of Bi 2 O 3 during the sintering process. This modification results in an ultra-high T C of 928 °C and an exceptional resistivity of 2.85 MΩ cm at 600 °C for Ca 0.96 (Li 0.5 Bi 0.5 ) 0.04 Bi 2 Nb 1.98 Mn 0.02 O 9 ceramics. Furthermore, the ceramic exhibits excellent piezoelectric properties ( d 33 of 15.2 pC/N and k p of 6.9 %), ferroelectric properties ( P r of 9.42 μC/cm 2 ), and thermal stability (degeneration of d 33 only 6 % after annealing at 900 °C for 2 h). This work offers a practical strategy for simultaneously achieving both a high piezoelectric response and outstanding insulating properties in the CBNO system.

Enhancement of piezoelectric properties of CaBi2Nb2O9 ceramics by Ce doping and direct reaction sintering

Junhui Tan,Rongxia Huang,Hua-Tay Lin,Kai Liu,Tianbao Xie,Yejing Dai

CaBi 2 Nb 2 O 9 (CBN) with the Aurivillius phase has a high Curie temperature ( T C ) and remarkable fatigue resistance , which has great potential for application as high-temperature sensors. However, due to its low piezoelectric properties , its practical application remains a great challenge. In this paper, Ca 1- x Ce x Bi 2 Nb 2 O 9 ceramics were prepared by the direct reaction sintering (DRS) and conventional preparation (CP) methods, respectively. The experimental results indicate that Ce doping can increase the piezoelectric coefficient d 33 of CBN ceramics by about two times. Among them, the grain size of the samples prepared by the DRS method is finer and more uniform, and the d 33 value of DRS samples is about 3.6–9.4 % higher than that of CP samples. The DRS sample Ca 0·97 Ce 0·03 Bi 2 Nb 2 O 9 has a d 33 value of 18.9 pC/N, a T C of 948 °C, and a resistivity of 1.1 × 10 5  Ω cm at 600 °C. This study shows that DRS method is an effective densification method, which can prepare CBN-based ceramics with excellent comprehensive properties, and provides an innovative preparation route to explore CBN-based ceramics with excellent piezoelectric properties.

The impact of co-doping Ce, W, and Mn on the microstructure and piezoelectric performance of high-temperature piezoelectric ceramics based on CaBi2Nb2O9

Tianbao Xie,Rongxia Huang,Junhui Tan,Yan ning Luo,Hua-Tay Lin,Yejing Dai

CaBi 2 Nb 2 O 9 (CBN) is a bismuth layered ferroelectric material with extremely high Curie temperature and low dielectric loss, which has great application potential in ultra-high temperature field. However, because of its low piezoelectric coefficient, its practical application still faces great challenges. This study successfully prepared Ca 1-x Ce x Bi 2 Nb 1.98 (W 2/3 Mn 1/3 ) 0.02 O 9 ( x  = 0–0.05) two-layer ferroelectric ceramics using direct-reaction sintering method. A pseudo tetragonal structure was successfully constructed near x  = 0.02 using the substitution method of Ce 4+ at site A, and W 6+ and Mn 4+ at site B, which altered the crystal structure of CBN based ceramics. The properties of CBN-based piezoelectric ceramics have been significantly improved by this modification. It has a higher piezoelectric constant ( d 33  = 20.6 pC/N) and Curie temperature ( T c  = 950 °C), while having a lower dielectric loss (tan δ  = 0.031 at 500 °C). In addition, CaBi 2 Nb 2 O 9 based piezoelectric ceramics also show excellent thermal stability. After annealing at 900 °C for 2 h, the d 33 value remained high at 19.2 pC/N, retaining about 93.2% of its original value. Therefore, these findings indicate that Ca 1-x Ce x Bi 2 Nb 1.98 (W 2/3 Mn 1/3 ) 0.02 O 9 is a high-temperature piezoelectric material with great potential.

Na-Sm Bimetallic Regulation and Band Structure Engineering in CaBi2Nb2O9 to Enhance Piezo-photo-catalytic Performance

Qiong Liu,Faqi Zhan,Hang Luo,Xiaogang Luo,Qiuyan Yi,Qiwei Sun,Zhida Xiao,Yan Zhang,Dou Zhang,Chris R. Bowen

The piezoelectric enhancement of photo-catalytic activity for water splitting and pollutant degradation is a novel approach to developing renewable energy and environmental protection applications. Herein, a new form of defect engineered Na-Sm bimetallic-regulated CaBi 2 Nb 2 O 9 platelet is synthesized via a molten salt process for water splitting and pollutant degradation applications. An intermediate band structure is introduced by Sm-doping, and empty orbitals in the conductive band are introduced by Na-doping. These factors, combined with the increased local charge density around the Sm and Na atoms, result in an increased electrical conductivity, improved electron mobility, and provide additional electrons for enhancing catalytic reactions. As a consequence, the judicious co-doping of CaBi 2 Nb 2 O 9 with Sm and Na leads to a unique synergetic piezo-photo-electric effect to provide a superior piezo-photo-catalytic performance for H 2 production (158.53 µmol g −1 h −1 ) and pollutant degradation (rate constant, k = 0.257 min −1 ). This new approach provides important insights into the application of defect engineering to exploit the cooperative doping of alkaline earth metals and rare metals to create high-performance catalysts.

Cross-layer structural coupling in CaBi2Nb2O9 ceramics via Ce3+/La3+ modification

Yuwen Liu,Chengwen Bin,Cheng Sun,Sheng Jiang,Jie Wang

Research on Aurivillius ceramics mainly focuses on perovskite-like slabs, whereas fluorite-like (Bi 2 O 2 ) 2+ layers are often regarded as passive. Here, Ce 3+ /La 3+ -modified CaBi 2 Nb 2 O 9 -based ceramics were designed to clarify how engineering the (Bi 2 O 2 ) 2+ layers affects cross-layer structural coupling and electromechanical response. Ce 3+ /La 3+ incorporation weakens orthorhombic distortion and induces tetragonal-like evolution while maintaining the Aurivillius framework. Raman and XPS results further demonstrate that this modification simultaneously alters the local Bi–O environment, A-site Ca 2+ coordination, NbO 6 octahedral distortion, and defect chemistry, confirming pronounced coupling between the fluorite-like layers and perovskite slabs. In addition, Ce 3+ /La 3+ incorporation suppresses Bi volatilization, improves densification and optimizes the domain morphology. As a result, the ceramic with x  = 0.05 exhibits an enhanced piezoelectric coefficient d 33 of 15.9 pC/N while retaining a high Curie temperature of 921 °C. This work demonstrates that targeted engineering of the (Bi 2 O 2 ) 2+ layers is an effective route for regulating cross-layer coupling and improving the performance of high-temperature Aurivillius piezoceramics.

Enhancement of piezoelectric properties and temperature stability of high-Curie temperature CaBi2Nb2O9 ceramics

Biao Zhang,Shuhang Yu,Qiantong Li,Zhihong Luo,Wangxin Li,Mingmei Lin,Junhui Lang,Mingwang Yuan,Jianming Deng,Feng Yan,Changbai Long,Dawei Wang,Laijun Liu

Next-generation jet engines, metal forging processes, and non-destructive monitoring of nuclear power plants demand piezoelectric sensors with ultra-high operating temperature, exceptional sensitivity, and outstanding temperature stability. Bismuth calcium niobate (CaBi 2 Nb 2 O 9 , CBNO) is considered a candidate for high-temperature piezoelectric materials due to high-Curie temperature ( T C ) near 900 °C. However, pure CBNO shows a poor piezoelectric coefficient ( d 33 ) and low high-temperature resistivity ( ρ ). In this work, the piezoelectricity, ferroelectricity, and resistivity of CBNO ceramics were significantly improved by constructing pseudo-tetragonal boundary through the co-substitution of Li/Ce at A site and W/Mo at B site. Remarkably, Ca 0.92 (Li 0.5 Ce 0.5 ) 0.08 Bi 2 Nb 1.97 (W 2/3 Mo 1/3 ) 0.03 O 9 (CLCBN-3WM) ceramic exhibits the best performance: ultra-high T C (∼ 922 °C), very high d 33 (∼ 16.1 pC/N), a large remanent polarization (∼ 11.61 μC/cm 2 ), and very good high-temperature insulation ρ (∼ 7.4 × 10 5 Ω·cm at 600 °C), as well as excellent thermal stability with its d 33 value degeneration from 16.1 pC/N to 15.1 pC/N from room temperature to 800 °C (less than 7.0 %). These results indicate that CLCBN-3WM ceramics have significant potential for using in electromechanical transducers operating at high temperatures (600 °C or higher).

Grain boundary segregation plays a critical role in determining the properties of polycrystalline materials, yet its influence on piezoelectric performance remains underexplored. In this work, bismuth layer-structured piezoceramic W6+-doped CaBi2Nb2O9 (WCBN) was chosen to investigate the effect of grain boundary segregation on the piezoelectric properties through multiscale structural characterization and phase-field simulations. The results reveal that improper grain boundary segregation can induce internal stress fields that restrict domain switching dynamics, leading to deterioration of the piezoelectric response. Therefore, a novel poling process was developed, which effectively alleviated the segregation-induced stress constraints and enhanced the piezoelectric coefficients by 180%. More importantly, optimizing the preparation process significantly enhances the mechanical properties, particularly increasing the fracture toughness of WCBN ceramics to 2.73 MPa m1/2, which is more than twice that of traditional Pb(Zr, Ti)O3 piezoceramics. These findings establish direct correlations between grain boundary segregation, internal stress, and domain switching behavior, providing fundamental insights for the design of piezoelectric materials that integrate both high piezoelectric and mechanical properties, which could be greatly beneficial to long-term stable operation in harsh environments with high temperatures and complex vibrations for bismuth layer-structured piezoceramics.

Enhancement of the piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties of CaBi2Nb2O9 ceramics by optimizing excess Bi2O3

Biao Zhang,Zhihong Luo,Jianming Deng,Mingmei Lin,Liming Quan,Wangxin Li,Shuhang Yu,Dawei Wang,Feng Yan,Changbai Long,Laijun Liu

Calcium bismuth niobate (CaBi 2 Nb 2 O 9 , CBNO) piezoelectric ceramics are promising materials for high-temperature sensors, actuators, and transducers. However, the unique layered structure of CBNO typically results in a low piezoelectric response. Previous studies have generally improved their electrical properties through complex ion substitution or preparation process optimization. Nonetheless, bismuth oxide (Bi 2 O 3 ) volatilization during sintering remains an inevitable issue. This leads to Bi vacancies, oxygen vacancies, and non-stoichiometric composition, negatively affecting both electrical performance and structural stability. In this work, we focus on the influence of excess Bi 2 O 3 on defect compensation and electrical properties. The ceramic with 2 % excess Bi 2 O 3 exhibits ultra-high T C of 929 °C, high d 33 of 14.1 pC/N, 2 P r of 25.5 μC/cm 2 , excellent ρ of 1.02 × 10 5  Ω cm at 600 °C, as well as excellent thermal stability with the d 33 remaining 13.3 pC/N (less than 6.0 %) after annealed at 800 °C for 2 h. This strategy offers a practical solution to improve the stability and performance of CBNO ceramics for high-temperature applications.

Enhancement of Resistivity and Piezoelectric Coefficient of CaBi2Nb2O9 Ceramic by Microstructure and Defect Modulation

Shuhang Yu,Biao Zhang,Zhihong Luo,Zhi Yuan,Fenglong Li,Dongyan Yu,Wangxin Li,Xiangdong Ding,Changbai Long,Laijun Liu

CBNO ceramic-based piezoelectric sensors are of considerable interest owing to their elevated operational temperatures. A multiscale modulation strategy has been developed for increasing high-temperature resistivity and piezoelectric properties of calcium bismuth niobate (CaBi2Nb2O9, CBNO) ceramics. Fine grains and nanoscale ferroelectric domains are achieved in Ca0.92(Li0.5Sm0.5)0.08Bi2Nb2–xTaxO9 (abbreviated as (CLS)BN-10xT, x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8) ceramics by composition and defect compensation. The optimization of ferroelectric properties and the decrease of both intrinsic defects and carrier migration gives rise to superior resistivity, high-temperature stability, and piezoelectric coefficient. Consequently, a resistivity of 7.89 × 106 Ω·cm is achieved at 600 °C, maintaining 1.71 × 106 Ω·cm at 650 °C for (CLS)BN-6T ceramic. This is comprehensively superior to that of the most known CaBi2Nb2O9-based ceramics. Notably, the ceramics show good performance in terms of temperature stability as well as a piezoelectric coefficient (d33 = 17.1 pC/N). This work provides a solid technical foundation for the development of high-performance, high-temperature acceleration sensors.

Co-doping Ce3+ and Mn4+ to induce pseudo tetragonal distortion in CaBi2Nb2O9 for improved piezoresponse

Jianing Wang,Hongcai Yu,Yunhui Min,Shulin Chen,Xiaotian Li,Ruihong Liang,Zhiyong Zhou,Bin Yang

Calcium bismuth niobate (CBN), known for its high Curie temperature ( T C ), has been investigated as a potential material for vibration sensor due to its ability to operate at elevated temperatures. However, the inherent weakness in piezoresponse of CBN has limited its sensing performance. In this study, a pseudo-tetragonal distortion in CBN was successfully induced by incorporating Ce 3+ ions into the (Bi 2 O 2 ) 2+ layers of CBN. This modification led to a change in the interaction between the perovskite and bismuth layers, resulting in enhanced piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties. Further enhancement was achieved by introducing Mn 4+ ions into the Ce 3+ -doped CBN. The co-doped CaBi 1.96 Ce 0.04 Nb 1.985 Mn 0.015 O 9 demonstrated a significantly improved piezoelectric coefficient ( d 33 ) of 15.9 pC/N, compared to 6.8 pC/N for pure CBN ceramics, and an increased remnant polarization ( P r ) of 20.78 μC/cm 2 , compared to the 3.83 μC/cm 2 of the pure material. This work not only deepens the understanding of bismuth-layer-structured ferroelectrics (BLSFs) but also presents a viable co-doping strategy to enhance the piezoresponse in CBN ceramics. This strategy could pave the way for the development of high-performance, high-temperature vibration sensors and potentially lead to the discovery of more novel BLSFs with superior performance.

Enhancement of the piezoelectric properties of CaBi2Nb2O9 ceramics through co-doping with K/Ce and In/W

Ji Huang,Liwen Qin,Yang Wu,Jingjing Chen,Xiangdong Ding,Changbai Long,Xue Chen,Laijun Liu

Calcium bismuth niobate (CBNO), known for its high Curie temperature ( T C ), has been investigated as a potential material for vibration sensor due to its ability to operate at elevated temperatures. However, the inherent weakness in piezoelectric response of CBNO has limited its sensing performance. This study successfully induced pseudo-tetragonal distortion in CBNO through the co-doping effects of K/Ce at A site and In/W at B site. This modification altered the interaction between the perovskite layer and the bismuth layer, thereby enhancing both piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties. The co-doped Ca 0.94 (K 0.5 Ce 0.5 ) 0.06 Bi 2 Nb 1.96 (In 1/3 W 2/3 ) 0.04 O 9 exhibits a significantly enhanced piezoelectric coefficient ( d 33 ) of 22.3 pC/N, compared to the 5~7 pC/N for pure CBNO ceramics, and the remanent polarization ( P r ) increased to 11.91 μC/cm 2 , compared to 3.83 μC/cm 2 for CBNO. Furthermore, the sample maintains a suitable resistivity ( ρ = 2.46 × 10 5 Ω·cm) even at 600°C. This work not only deepens the understanding of bismuth layer structure ferroelectrics (BLSFs) but also proposes a viable co-doping strategy, providing an effective approach for developing high-performance, high-temperature-resistant piezoelectric sensors.
