Online evaluation of catalytic co-pyrolysis of hemicellulose and polypropylene over CaO catalyst

Junjie Weng,Zhanjun Cheng,Yi Zhang,Chao Jiang,Lin Long,Jian Wang,Jianfeng Pan

The co-utilization of hydrogen-rich plastic and biomass can upgrade bio-oil. This process was further developed by adding catalysts to the co-pyrolysis of biomass and plastic. In this work, thermal and catalytic co-pyrolysis of hemicellulose and polypropylene (PP) was investigated by TG combined with mass spectrometry, which is characterized by in-situ online detection for pyrolysis products. The intrinsic interaction as well as the reaction mechanism were revealed for the catalytic co-pyrolysis. The results show that CaO catalyst can enhance xylan decomposition and increase the production of small alkene from PP. The formation of olefins and furan compounds can be promoted significantly by CaO catalyst. Besides hydrocarbon pool mechanism, Diels-Alder reaction further contributes to additional aromatics formation. This work provides detailed reaction information, which can help to further understand the mechanism of catalytic co-pyrolysis of biomass and plastic.

CaO catalyst for multi-route conversion of oakwood biomass to value-added chemicals and fuel precursors in fast pyrolysis

Jyoti Gupta,Konstantinos Papadikis,Elena Yu. Konysheva,Yi Lin,Ivan V. Kozhevnikov,Jingjing Li

The impact of CaO on oakwood pyrolysis was explored by the Py-GC/MS at 500 °C. Ca(OH) 2 presents on the CaO surface, indicating its partial hydration (noted as CaO OH ). CaO OH promoted the ketonisation of carboxylic acids to aliphatic ketones, furfural to cyclopentanone/2-cyclopentenone, facilitated the elimination of the methoxy-phenolic compounds. The catalyst loading did not show any significant effect on the formation of acetone, while a noticeable reduction in the phenolics was revealed. Increasing catalyst loading almost eliminated CO 2 , acids, furans, aldehydes, ether groups, whilst the fractions of alcohols, esters, sugars, and alkoxybenzene decreased noticeably. The use of partially hydrated CaO OH in the CFP can create conditions where by-products generated during the ketonisation and phenolics upgrading reactions (CO 2 , H 2 O, CO) interact through the adsorption enhance water-gas-shift reaction and through coking reactions with formation of H 2 used for hydrogenation during multistep conversion of furfural to cyclopentanone in a vapour phase.

Ball-Milling: A Productive, Economical, and Widely Applicable Method for Condensation of Biomass-Derived Aldehydes and Ketones at Mild Temperatures

Qianqian Xu,Xueru Sheng,Na Li,Jian Zhang,Haiqiang Shi,Meihong Niu,Qingwei Ping,Ning Li

For the first time, ball-milling was introduced as an efficient process for the condensation of biomass-derived cyclopentanone using commercial CaO as a catalyst. Compared with traditional magnetic stirring methods (“heat input” methods), ball-milling is an alternative “energy input” method. CaO dosage, rotation speed, and reaction time were investigated for optimal condition screening, and the ball-milling method could achieve a high yield (98.9%) and a high selectivity (99.2%) under lower energy demand conditions at mild temperature (∼40 °C). Moreover, the power hypothetically needed for dimer per mole (E2) of the ball-milling method was comparable or even lower than that for the magnetic stirring method after our assessment. In addition, we also explored the applicability of the ball-milling method for the condensation of other biomass-derived aldehydes and ketones. Competitive yield was obtained using heterogeneous CaO as a catalyst. Due to the intense stirring in ball-milling, the CaO catalyst was mixed uniformly with reactants, and higher surface area was also obtained due to the decrease of the particle size during the ball-milling method, which may also benefit the reaction and increase the catalytic activity. This way would tally with the concept of green chemistry and economic efficiency, which has the potential for industrial applications.

Catalytic gasification of wet municipal solid waste with HfO2 promoted Ni-CaO catalyst for H2-rich syngas production

Muhammad Irfan,Aimin Li,Lei Zhang,Guozhao Ji,Yuan Gao

Catalytic gasification, coupled with in-situ CO 2 capture over Ni-CaO catalyst, is considered to be an effective approach for H 2 -rich and tar-free syngas production. However, the poor stability of Ni-CaO based catalyst raises a question regarding its large scale application. In this study, HfO 2 was used as a stabilizer and promoter for the Ni-CaO catalyst system. The stability of catalyst was evaluated through cyclic carbonation-calcination test with a thermogravimetric analyzer. The results showed that HfO 2 incorporated catalysts performed better stability towards cyclic CO 2 capture. The effect of different HfO 2 additions in catalyst, catalyst to municipal solid waste (C/MSW) ratio, gasification temperature, and moisture content (MC) of MSW was investigated on syngas composition, H 2 yield, dry gas yield (DGY) and product distribution (syngas, tar and char). The results indicated that H 2 yield was improved from 212 mL/g (without catalyst) to 442 mL/g with Ni-CaO (NC) catalyst and further improved with the application of HfO 2 promoted catalysts (Ni-CaO-HfO 2 ). The catalyst with 20% HfO 2 (NCH-20) exhibited maximum H 2 yield of 597 mL/g. Moreover, a significant reduction in tar content from 8.79 wt% (without catalyst), 3.19 wt% (with Ni-CaO) to 2.81 wt% (with NCH-20) was also recorded with HfO 2 promoted catalysts.

Promotional role of MgO on sorption-enhanced steam reforming of ethanol over Ni/CaO catalysts

Sier Sang,Zhi-Jian Zhao,Hao Tian,Zhao Sun,Hongfang Li,Suttichai Assabumrungrat,Tahir Muhammad,Liang Zeng,Jinlong Gong

This article describes the design and synthesis of MgO-modified Ni/CaO catalysts for sorption-enhanced steam reforming of ethanol. The results show that the introduction of MgO effectively increases the dispersion of CaO via forming MgCa(CO 3 ) 2 precursor. In the prepared MgO-modified Ni/CaO catalysts, metallic Ni exists around MgO supported on CaO. Both 100% ethanol conversion and >96% hydrogen purity can be stabilized in 10 cycles over the catalyst containing 20 wt% MgO. The interaction between metallic Ni and MgO enhances the sintering resistance of the catalyst. More importantly, reaction pathway studies have confirmed that the formation of CaCO 3 hinders the activation of H 2 O on the Ni/CaO catalyst surface, and thus inhibits the conversion of the reaction intermediates including HCO* and CH x *. MgO can dissociate H 2 O to form hydroxyl groups which participate in the conversion of the reaction intermediates, thereby the MgO-modified Ni/CaO catalysts have better catalytic performance and carbon deposition resistance.

Enhanced steam gasification of lignin to generate H2-enriched syngas over a (Ni-Ce)/CaO catalyst

Wenzhe Zhang,Shanshan Dai,Yong Liu,Jie Li,Guozhang Chang,Cuiping Wang,Jian Zhang

The utilization of industrially generated lignin is an important aspect of achieving worldwide carbon neutrality. In this study, Ni/CaO, Ce/CaO and (Ni-Ce)/CaO catalysts were prepared using an impregnation method to improve the production of H 2 -enriched syngas from lignin steam gasification. Results show that the Ni/CaO and Ce/CaO exhibited different effects when applied to steam gasification, the former improved the conversion of solid lignin whereas the latter promoted decomposition of the resulting volatiles. The (Ni-Ce)/CaO catalyst provided a remarkable synergistic effect on production of H 2 -enriched syngas. The mass-based yield of gaseous products and the volume-based proportion of H 2 in these products were respectively 70.8% and 61.1% in the presence of the (Ni-Ce)/CaO catalyst with a Ni-to-Ce molar ratio of 1:0.9. The H 2 yields obtained from this material were found to gradually decrease from 763 to 681 mL/(g lignin) during five repeated uses. This gradual deactivation of the (Ni-Ce)/CaO catalyst was ascribed to both carbon deposition and the formation of CaSO 4 by reactions between sulfur in the lignin ash and the CaO component.

Pulse pyrolysis of waste cooking oil over CaO: Exploration of catalyst deactivation pathway based on feedstock characteristics

Qiuhao Wu,Linyao Ke,Yunpu Wang,Nan Zhou,Hui Li,Qi Yang,Jiamin Xu,Leilei Dai,Rongge Zou,Yuhuan Liu,Roger Ruan

Pulse pyrolysis was carried out to realize real-time monitoring of CaO catalyst deactivation and regeneration in the catalytic pyrolysis of waste cooking oil (WCO) and free fatty acids (FFAs) based on the pyrolysis characteristics of feed stocks. The high unsaturation of the feedstock decreases the initial decomposition temperature and reduces the content of oxygen-containing compounds. CaO catalyst was completely deactivated after several times of pulse pyrolysis. During the pyrolysis of WCO, the catalytic activity of CaO did not recover after the pause of pulse pyrolysis. However, the catalytic activity all recovered during the pyrolysis of FFAs, but the rate of deactivation was accelerated. A large amount of Ca(OH) 2 and CaCO 3 were detected in the deactivated catalyst, and soluble coke was not detected. The research suggested that the change of crystal phases and agglomeration were the vital cause that impact the CaO catalyst stability.
