Calcium looping represents a high-temperature method designed to capture CO 2 , making it appropriate for CO 2 capture from flue gases post-combustion in power plants after combustion or for integration with fuel transformation techniques in pre-combustion CO 2 sequestration systems. This method employs solid sorbents of CaO sourced from natural limestone, leveraging the chemical interaction of CaO with CO 2 , which ultimately results in the formation of CaCO 3 , thereby facilitating effective CO 2 capture. In this research, multiple metal-incorporated CaO-based sorbents were produced through the sol–gel method. Notably, the CaO-based sorbent with a Ca/Ce doping ratio of 15 demonstrates exceptional CO 2 capture ability and stability, maintaining 13.20 mmol/g of CO 2 adsorption capacity after 20 carbonation/calcination cycles. Various characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), N 2 physisorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy (HAADF-STEM/EDS), temperature-programmed-desorption with CO 2 (CO 2 -TPD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) are employed to demonstrate that the presence of nanoscale CeO 2 significantly enhanced the diffusion of CO 2 during the adsorption process.

In situ pore forming achieved by vapor releasing of chemical looping reaction for dynamic compensation of lost pore volume was proposed to improve the durability of the nano-CaO-based adsorbent in calcium looping process. The effect of contents (12–34 wt.%) and kinds of the pore forming agents (MnO 2 , Fe 2 O 3 , Co 2 O 3 , NiO and CuO) on the dynamic pore compensation effect and sorption performance including sorption capacity and durability of the adsorbent was investigated. The results showed that high pore forming capacity could be achieved by high doping content and oxygen mass fraction of agent. Good anti-sintering ability of agent could leads to a prominent pore forming stability. The final dynamic pore compensation effect was controlled by both pore forming capacity and stability. Compared with the nano-CaO/Al 2 O 3 adsorbent, the best dynamic pore compensation effect for the nano-CaO-NiO/Al 2 O 3 adsorbent was achieved with doping NiO content of 21 wt.%, which could increase pore volume by 67.3% after 3 CaL cycles. The total average deactivation rate of the nano-CaO-NiO/Al 2 O 3 adsorbent was reduced by 48%, which meant that in situ dynamic pore compensation could significantly improve the cyclic durability of adsorbents. CaO based sorbents have great potential for commercial use to capture CO 2 of power plants. In the demand of producing sorbents with better cyclic performance, CaO-based sorbents derived from different kinds of calcium precursors, containing calcium carbonate (CC-CaO), calcium gluconate monohydrate (CG-CaO), calcium citrate (CCi-CaO) and calcium acetate monohydrate (CA-CaO), were tested cyclically and compared using simultaneous thermal analyzer (STA). And further study was conducted on the sorbents modified with citric acid monohydrate and 50% gluconic acid solution by wet mixing combustion synthesis. The modified sorbents showed better performance and higher pore parameters as well as porous microstructure with more organic acid added. After 20 cycles of carbonation and calcination , the C2CCi8 (CaO: citric acid = 2:8 by mass ratio) and C2G8 (CaO: gluconic acid = 2:8 by mass ratio) sorbent possess CO 2 capture capacity of 0.45 g·g −1 (g CO 2 per g sorbents) and 0.52 g·g −1 respectively. The citric acid was more effective for modification than gluconic acid for extended 50 cycles. Furthermore, good linear relationship between CaO conversion and specific surface area as well as pore volume were determined, of which the specific surface area showed closer correlation with CaO conversion.

Calcium looping (CaL) belongs to a promising high-temperature CO 2 capture technology because of adopting cheap and extensive source CaO-based sorbents . However, CaO-based sorbents are prone to occur the issues of sintering and elutriation in the fluidized-bed reactors. To further enhance the practicability, the Zr-supported, CaO-based sorbent pellets were produced using the graphite-moulding method. Different synthesis modes (i.e., sol-gel, hydration-mixing, and wet-mixing) were compared for preparing CaO-based composite slurry before pelletization. Sol-gel is the promising synthesis mode to prepare Zr-supported, CaO-based pellets with outstanding CO 2 capture performance due to achieving a more uniform distribution of inert CaZrO 3 spacer. Moreover, the Zr-based stabilizer content within sorbent pellets produced by the combined method of sol-gel and graphite-moulding was further studied. The higher content of Zr-based stabilizer promotes the enhancement of cyclic stability and mechanical strength of Zr-supported, CaO-based pellets. After 17 cycles, the sorbent pellets containing 20 wt% of Zr-based stabilizer display a high CaO carbonation conversion of 74.1 %. Moreover, CaO-based pellets with 20 wt% of Zr-based stabilizer possess a higher compression strength of 4.84 ± 1.08 MPa, which is as high as 1.8 times that of the pellets with 5 wt% of Zr-based stabilizer.

A screening of inert solid supports as metal skeletons of CaO-based sorbents was conducted in this work, aiming to provide the basis and guideline for the selection of inert solid refractories to produce high temperature CO 2 capture sorbent. We studied 12 different refractories including Al-, Ti-, Mn-, Mg-, Y-, Si-, La-, Zr-, Ce-, Nd-, Pr- and Yb-based supports, among which Yb and Pr are newly introduced ones. The sorbents were synthesized using the same wet-mixing method, by which the inert supports could be well dispersed among the ultra-fine active specie of CaO/CaCO 3 particles to fully play the role of frameworks for sintering resistance. The sorbents stabilized by these inert supports were also cyclically tested under the same conditions. Y- and Al-based supports were found to exhibit much superior cyclic performance than the other supports. Mn-, Mg-, La-, Yb- and Nd-based supports are also good candidates, whereas the other ones containing Ti-, Ce-, Zr-, Si- and Pr-based supports show less effectiveness. The melting point of the inert support and surface area of the synthetic sorbents are found to be the key factors to affect the sorbent performance.

A novel core–shell CaO based adsorbent with Al-Zr co-modification was synthesized via a facile one-pot calcination method. The CO 2 capture capacity and long-term stability of the adsorbents with different Ca/Al/Zr molar ratios were investigated. The co-doping strategy significantly enhanced the CO 2 capture capacity of the calcium-based adsorbents. Specifically, the optimized Ca24Al1Zr0.3 adsorbent exhibited excellent CO 2 adsorption performance in long-term adsorption–desorption cycles, with the CO 2 capacity of 0.53 g-CO 2 /g-ads after 40 cycles. The synergistic effects of Al-Zr co-doping were analyzed from a microstructural perspective. The core–shell Ca24Al1Zr0.3 adsorbent with a CaZrO 3 outer shell featured minimized particle size, abundant mesoporous and macroporous structures, and uniformly distributed doping components. Under the combined effects of structural modification and metal doping, it manifested enhanced CO 2 capture capacity. Based on the CO 2 adsorption mechanism of CaO, this study revealed that Al-Zr co-doping promotes oxygen vacancy generation and improves CO 2 adsorption performance. The Ca24Al1Zr0.3 adsorbent demonstrated the highest oxygen vacancy content and the most pronounced positive shift in Ca 2p binding energy. This shift enhanced electron-donating capability of calcium, effectively facilitating O 2− migration and CO 2 diffusion. Furthermore, the Ca24Al1Zr0.3 adsorbent exhibited superior carbonation reaction kinetics during long-term cyclic operation.

CaO-based adsorbents present a promising approach for industrial CO 2 emissions reduction. This study systematically investigates the influence of adsorption temperature, adsorbent mass, CO 2 concentration, and flow rate on CO 2 capture efficiency using commercial CaO via thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Optimal adsorption performance, achieving a capacity of 0.62 g/g and a rate exceeding 0.14 g/g/min, was observed at 750°C, 7 mg mass, 20% CO 2 , and 20 mL/min flow. Characterization (SEM, BET, and FTIR) indicated that 750°C preserved a hierarchical pore structure (24.64 m 2 /g surface area, 0.1026 cm 3 /g pore volume, and 7.08 nm average pore size), mitigating sintering and pore blockage while confining carbonation to surface layers. Kinetic modeling confirmed chemisorption dominance (pseudo-second-order). These findings elucidate fundamental mass/heat transfer limitations, supporting the development of enhanced CaO-based carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies.
