Active ruthenium catalysts prepared by Cacumen Platycladi leaf extract for selective hydrogenation of maleic anhydride

Yangqiang Huang,Yao Ma,Youwei Cheng,Lijun Wang,Xi Li

Ruthenium-based catalysts were prepared by a biogenic method via Cacumen Platycladi leaf extract and tested in the liquid phase hydrogenation of maleic anhydride to the corresponding succinic anhydride. The reaction conditions were optimized by varying the Ru loading, reaction temperature, hydrogen pressure, reaction time and organic solvents to achieve the superb catalytic performance. Reusability tests and comparison with commercial catalysts were also studied on the biosynthesized Ru-based catalysts. Furthermore, a variety of characterization techniques, such as TEM, HRTEM, EDS and XPS showed the effectively introduction of ruthenium nanoparticles into the carbon supports. The analyses of FTIR and TG confirmed that the plant extract served as both reducing and protecting agents..

Plant-Mediated Synthesis of Au Nanoparticles: Separation and Identification of Active Biomolecule in the Water Extract of Cacumen Platycladi

Hai Liu,Ting Lian,Yang Liu,Yingling Hong,Daohua Sun,Qingbiao Li

In order to investigate the roles of active molecules during the bioinspired synthesis process of gold nanoparticles by Cacumen platycladi leaf extract, flash column chromatography was employed to separate the Cacumen platycladi leaf extract according to the polarity differences. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and high-performance liquid chromatography equipped with a photodiode array detector were adopted to identify the category of the isolated samples. The results have demonstrated that components in the Cacumen platycladi leaf extract can be sorted into three categories: sugars (the Sloading and S0), polyphenols (S1∼S5), and flavonoids (S6∼S8). The characterizations of gold nanoparticles, produced by each isolated sample with chloroauric acid, indicate the strong-to-weak sequence of reducing power is polyphenols, flavonoids, and sugars. Sugars have no protection strength for the biosynthesis of gold nanoparticles, polyphenols involved in isotropous stabilization, while flavonoids are responsible for the anisotropic growth.

Plant-Mediated Synthesis of Ag–Pd Alloy Nanoparticles and Their Application as Catalyst toward Selective Hydrogenation

Fenfen Lu,Daohua Sun,Jiale Huang,Mingming Du,Feng Yang,Huimei Chen,Yingling Hong,Qingbiao Li

Herein, we reported the green synthesis of Ag–Pd alloy nanoparticles (NPs) using the aqueous extract of the Cacumen platycladi leaves as well as their application as catalyst for hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene. The biosynthetic NPs were characterized to confirm the nature of alloy by UV–vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The possible functional groups responsible for the reduction and protection of NPs were identified through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results revealed that biomolecules like saccharides, polyphenols, or carbonyl compounds were related to the reduction process, and the (NH)C═O groups were responsible for the stabilization of the NPs. Furthermore, the as-formed Ag–Pd bimetallic-supported catalysts especially Ag1Pd3/γ-Al2O3 was found to possess excellent catalytic performance toward hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene. A butene yield of 84.9% was obtained, which was remarkably enhanced when compared with monometallic counterparts. Moreover, the activity of it maintained stability within 12 h of durable experiments.

Evaluation of Cacumen Platycladi Extract for Hair Loss Prevention: Mechanisms, Efficacy, and Clinical Application

Xue-Dong Bai,Yu-Chen Liu,Hong-Yun Zhao,Yi-Zhou Luo,Li-Jun Xu,Feng Luo

Hair loss is a prevalent condition with various causes, and effective treatments are in high demand. Cacumen Platycladi (Platycladus orientalisleaves), a traditional Chinese medicine, has been historically used to prevent hair loss. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and mechanisms of Cacumen Platycladi extract (CPE) in preventing hair loss. Using a gradient extraction method with 1,3-butanediol, ethanol, and water, bioactive compounds like quercitrin, myricetin, and myricitrin were enriched and identified via Liquid Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS). The results showed that CPE inhibited 5α-reductase activity, enhanced the antioxidant capacity of human dermal papilla cells (HDPCs), and upregulated the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt)/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway to promote vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and collagen type XVII (COL17) expression. A 12-week clinical trial demonstrated that CPE significantly reduced hair loss and increased local hair density compared to placebo, with no adverse effects. These findings support the potential of CPE as a safe and effective natural alternative for hair loss prevention.

Food-related botanical Cacumen Platycladi alleviates androgenetic alopecia through activating the Wnt/β-catenin pathway

Lei Gong,Zhenghang Wang,Hao Chen,Kaili Xuan,Yuchen Ding,Junqiang Zhang,Mengqi Wang,Qingxi Wu,Yan Chen

BACKGROUND Cacumen Platycladi (CP), the dried twigs and leaves of Platycladus orientalis , is a food-related botanical with potential hair health-promoting activity. However, the principal bioactive constituent responsible for its anti-alopecia effect and the underlying mechanism remain unclear. This study aimed to identify the key anti-alopecia constituent of CP and investigate its mechanism of action against androgenetic alopecia. RESULTS Six major candidate compounds were identified from CP by fractionated extraction, gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry, and network pharmacology analysis. Among them, amentoflavone showed the strongest anti-alopecia activity. In a testosterone-induced mouse model, amentoflavone increased mean hair length by 1.10-fold and hair density by 1.33-fold versus the model group, improved follicular morphology, reduced the proportion of vellus hair by 50.8%, and regulated serum hormone levels. Western blot analysis further showed that amentoflavone increased β-catenin and cyclin D1 expression while decreasing GSK-3β expression. CONCLUSION Amentoflavone was identified as the principal anti-alopecia constituent of CP. Its beneficial effect was associated with activation of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, suggesting that CP is a promising source of functional bioactive compounds for hair health-related applications. © 2026 Society of Chemical Industry.
