With the utilization of degradable plastics in the agricultural film and packaging industries, degradable microplastics (MPs) with strong mobility distributed in the underground environment may serve as carriers for heavy metals. It is essential to explore the interaction of (aged) degradable MPs with Cd(Ⅱ). The adsorption and co-transport behavior of different types of (aged) MPs (polylactic acid (PLA), polyvinyl chloride (PVC)) with Cd(Ⅱ) were investigated through batch adsorption experiments and column experiments under different conditions, respectively. The adsorption results showed that the adsorptive capacity of (aged) PLA with O-functional groups, polarity, and more negative charges was stronger than that of PVC and aged PVC, which was attributed to the binding of (aged) PLA to Cd(Ⅱ) through complexation and electrostatic attraction. The co-transport results indicated that the promotion of Cd(Ⅱ) transport by MPs followed the order of aged PLA > PLA > aged PVC > PVC. This facilitation was more pronounced under conditions of stronger transport of MPs and favorable attachment of Cd(Ⅱ) to MPs. Overall, the combination of strong adsorption affinity and high mobility helped (aged) PLA act as effective carriers for Cd(Ⅱ). The DLVO theory well explains the transport behavior of Cd(Ⅱ)-MPs. These findings provide new insights into the co-transport of degradable MPs and heavy metals in the subsurface environment.

Highly toxic Pb(Ⅱ) and Cd(Ⅱ) persist in water and soil, disrupting ecosystems while threatening human health through bioaccumulation. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as adsorbents toward heavy metal ions have garnered significant research attention. However, their adsorption capacity and retrieval are limited by small pore size and powder form. Herein, we designed a defective MIP-202 composite aerogel (DMCA) to efficiently remove Pb(Ⅱ) and Cd(Ⅱ). Mixed ligand (mercaptosuccinic acid) and modulator (butyric acid) were involved in the synthesis of MIP-202, and competed with the original amino acid ligand for binding to Zr clusters leading to the disruption of the original structure of MIP-202 and defect formation. Defective MIP-202 (D-MIP-202) possessed larger BET surface area (from 35.79 to 129.57 m 2 /g) and pore size (from 6.16 to 11.78 nm). Moreover, D-MIP-202 powder and sodium alginate were synthesized into DMCA with abundant adsorption sites and porous structures to enhance the sorption capacities, which were 434.7 mg/g (Pb(II)) and 202.6 mg/g (Cd(II)). The adsorption process primarily occurs on the heterogeneous surface of the material and represents a spontaneous chemisorption behavior. The adsorption mechanism is attributed to chelation, and ion exchange. This study presents an effective strategy for the remediation of heavy metal ions in aqueous systems.

An in-depth understanding of the sorption behaviors of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in soil is essential to assess their environmental risks accurately. Due to chemical industry production and waste treatment, co-contamination soil of heavy metals (HMs)-PFASs has become a public concern worldwide. This study investigated soil sorption behaviors of PFASs including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), and perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS). A multiple linear regression (MLR) model was developed to predict the sorption of PFOS in soil. Validation results demonstrated that this model could effectively predict the distribution coefficients ( K d ) of PFOS based on soil organic carbon (OC), silt, clay, and free Fe/Al-oxide contents, exhibiting a strong predictive ability ( r 2 = 0.942, p < 0.001). In six soils, HMs (Cd 2+ and As 5+ ) influence three anionic PFASs sorption primarily by altering the electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions between soil components and PFASs. The K d values of PFOS tend to rise with increasing Cd 2+ concentration but decline with increasing As 5+ concentration. In contrast, HMs have a relatively minor influence on the sorption of PFOA and PFHxS. Moreover, a nonlinear model was constructed for the first time to quantify the impact of HMs on PFASs sorption. The model achieves exceptional prediction accuracy when applied to both experimental data from this study and literature data. A comprehensive understanding of PFASs sorption behavior in soil under conditions of coexisting HMs is of great significance for formulating targeted degradation and mitigation strategies for co-contaminated sites.

Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) has been a promising treatment technology of heavy metal-enriched hyperaccumulator biomass to produce superior hydrochar adsorbent for contamination removal from the wastewater. However, a high amount of heavy metal in derived hydrochar limits its further application. In this study, the effect of reaction temperature (180–270 ℃) and medium pH during HTC on heavy metal contents, speciation and leaching risk of hydrochar from the hyperaccumulator biomass Sedum alfredii Hance was investigated to assess its environmental risk. HTC at a low reaction temperature and acid addition facilitated the removal of Zn/Cd/Pb from the solid phase, meanwhile the addition of acid favored the immobilization of Zn/Cd/Pb and lowered the potential leaching risk of Zn/Cd/Pb. Hydrochar prepared from HTC at 240 °C and pH = 2 had lower heavy metal content and lower releasing risk, followed by KOH modification to obtain high adsorption performance. The modified hydrohcar (KSAB) were characterized by SEM, XRD, BET, Boehm titration and FT-IR, and showed that the surface specific surface area and pore structure were optimized and OFGs of hydrochar were improved significantly after KOH treatment. Adsorption experiments showed that the Cd(II) adsorption process onto KSAB well accorded with pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherms. The maximum Cd(II) adsorption capacity of KSAB was 25.69 mg/g, which was 17 times compared to that of pristine hydrochar. Microstructure characteristics and mechanism analysis further suggested that electrostatic interactions, surface complexation, cation-π and ion exchange were the main Cd(II) removal mechanisms of KOH-modified hydrochar. Therefore, hydrochar derived from hyperaccumulator biomass can be used as a highly efficient absorbent to remove Cd(II) from wastewater after KOH modification.

The detection of toxic heavy metal ions, such as cadmium (Cd 2 + ) and lead (Pb 2+ ), is crucially important due to their environmental persistence and severe health risks. While multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) hold potential for electrochemical sensing, their practical application is hindered by aggregation tendencies and limited analyte affinity. To address these limitations, a composite utilizing polydopamine-functionalized MWCNTs (PDA@MWCNTs) was developed. This material synergistically enhances dispersion stability and improves metal ion capture capabilities. Based on this composite, an electrochemical sensor was fabricated for simultaneous detection of Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ . Sensor characterization using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) demonstrated good performance, achieving high sensitivity and selectivity. Low detection limits of 0.21 nM for Cd 2+ and 0.13 nM for Pb 2+ were attained, enabling reliable simultaneous quantification. The electrochemical sensor’s practical utility was validated through accurate measurements in lake water sample and complex herbal medicine matrices, highlighting its applicability for environmental monitoring and food safety. This platform offers distinct advantages including simple fabrication, cost-effectiveness, and sub-nanomolar sensitivity necessary for regulatory compliance.

Cation and oxyanion heavy metals possess opposite physical and chemical properties, which could be hard to simultaneous remediate in soil. In this study, layered double hydroxides from secondary aluminum ash (SAA-LDH) has been synthesized for soil remediation contaminated with heavy metals. The as-obtained SAA-LDH exhibit strong affinity for heavy metals, which could remove 193.50 mg‧g −1 of Cr(Ⅵ) and 175.84 mg‧g −1 of Cd(Ⅱ) within 2 h. Optimum acid-base resistance and selectivity guarantee the practice potential of SAA-LDH, which could remove above 85 % of Cd(Ⅱ) and Cr(Ⅵ) under widely pH range (from 4.00 to 10.00), capturing above 90 % of Cd(Ⅱ) and Cr(Ⅵ) under the interference of seven coexisting ions. Soil remediation tests and column leaching experiments further demonstrate that SAA-LDH could immobilize 98.32 % of Cd(Ⅱ) and 97.71 % of Cr(Ⅵ), preventing its migration. Density functional theory (DFT) manifests that SAA-LDH could remove Cd(Ⅱ) and Cr(Ⅵ) through isomorphic substitution and ion exchange respectively under single system. Under compound system, Cd(Ⅱ) fixed with isomorphic substitution could promote the immobilization of Cr(Ⅵ) onto SAA-LDH, constructing hyper-stable coordination structure. This study provides an effective approach to simultaneously recycle hazardous waste and remediate heavy metals contamination in soil.

A novel monodispersed Cd(II) ion-imprinted polymer (IIP) was synthesized inside core-shell mesoporous silica (C-SMS) particles to improve the diffusion kinetics of the polymer. The synthesized IIP@C-SMS was characterized and subsequently used in solid-phase extraction (SPE) for the selective adsorption of Cd(II) in aquatic samples. The results indicated that IIP had been successfully assembled inside the C-SMS particles with a high specific surface area (546.3 m 2 g −1 ) and uniform mesoporous size (2.07 nm). The obtained IIP@C-SMS takes only 15 min to reach the adsorption equilibrium due to the highly developed mesoporous structure. IIP@C-SMS also presented a maximal adsorption capacity (201.9 μmol g −1 ) for Cd(II), which was much higher than that of NIP@C-SMS (80.3 μmol g −1 ). The relative selectivity coefficient of IIP@C-SMS for Cd(II)/M(II) (M = Cu(II), Pb(II), Cr(II), and Ni(II)) were 7.15, 8.70, 7.18, and 7.36, respectively, further confirming the satisfactory selectivity of IIP@C-SMS. The adsorption isotherms of IIP@C-SMS toward Cd(II) could be described by Langmuir model; whereas the adsorption kinetics could be fitted by the pseudo-second-order model, indicating chemisorption was the rate-limiting step. The FT-IR, ITC and XPS analysis further confirmed that the Cd(II)-induced cavities during the ion-imprinting process and the coordination between Cd(II) and –SH groups were the main adsorption mechanism. Furthermore, in real samples, IIP@C-SMS-SPE adsorbed approximately 93–104% of Cd(II). This work provides new insights for the design of novel macroporous sorbents for Cd(II).

The demand for disposable face masks (DFMs) increased sharply in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, information regarding the underlying roles of the largely discarded DFMs in the environment is extremely lacking. This study focused on the pristine and UV-aged DFMs as vectors of metal ions (Pb(Ⅱ), Cd(Ⅱ), and Sr(Ⅱ)). Further, the aging mechanism of DFMs with UV radiation as well as the interaction mechanisms between DFMs and metal ions were investigated. Results revealed that the aging process would help to promote more metal ions adsorbed onto DFMs, which was mainly attributed to the presence of oxygen-containing groups on the aged DFMs. The adsorption affinity of pristine and aged DFMs for the metal ions followed Pb(Ⅱ) > Cd(Ⅱ) > Sr(Ⅱ), which was positively corrected with the electronegativity of the metals. Interestingly, we found that even if DFMs were not disrupted, DFMs had similar or even higher adsorption affinity for metals compared with other existing microplastics. Besides, regarding environmental factors, including salinity and solution pH played a crucial role in the adsorption processes, with greater adsorption capacities for pristine and aged DFMs at higher pH values and low salinity. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and density functional theory further confirmed that the pristine DFMs interacted with the metals mainly through electrostatic interaction, while electrostatic interaction and surface complexation jointly regulated the adsorption of the metals onto aged DFMs. Overall, these findings would help to evaluate environmental behaviors and risks of DFMs associated with metals.

Calcium silicate-based materials hydrate to form calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), a reactive phase capable of immobilizing heavy metals. However, the mechanisms governing element-specific long-term stability remain unclear. In this study, dicalcium silicate (C 2 S) and tricalcium silicate (C 3 S) were used to compare the removal behavior, aging stability, and microscopic immobilization mechanisms of Pb(Ⅱ) and Cd(Ⅱ) in aqueous systems. Both minerals efficiently removed Pb(Ⅱ) and Cd(Ⅱ), while C 3 S showed stronger early Pb(Ⅱ) removal, possibly related to faster hydration-product formation under the tested conditions. Cd(Ⅱ) removal remained above 99% in both systems. Apparent isotherm and kinetic analyses indicated that metal removal was governed by a coupled apparent process involving interfacial adsorption, surface complexation, hydration-product formation, and precipitation, rather than by physical adsorption alone. Long-term aging and acidic leaching tests revealed contrasting stability: Cd-bearing products exhibited strong leaching resistance, whereas Pb-bearing products showed a potential risk of re-release after aging. XRD, XPS, TEM, and TEM-EDS analyses indicated that Pb and Cd were closely associated with C-S-H-related hydration products, suggesting possible Ca-associated binding or partial structural incorporation. The stronger acid-leaching resistance of Cd-bearing products implies more stable association with C-S-H-related phases than that of Pb-bearing products. These findings clarify the element-specific immobilization mechanisms of C 2 S/C 3 S and provide guidance for calcium silicate-based treatment of heavy-metal-contaminated water.

Phosphate-loaded pyrolyzed gypsum board was innovatively reused for Cd(Ⅱ)/Pb(Ⅱ) remediation. • Single and coexisting heavy metal systems were systematically evaluated in both aqueous and soil environments. • The recycled material achieved enhanced Cd(Ⅱ) adsorption while retaining high Pb(Ⅱ) removal capacity. • Phosphate-driven mineralization and ion exchange between hydroxyapatite and heavy metals enhance the immobilization. This study proposed a cascade utilization strategy for waste gypsum board by reusing phosphate-loaded pyrolyzed gypsum board (PGB150P) for Cd(Ⅱ) and Pb(Ⅱ) remediation in aqueous and soil environments. The results showed that PGB150 exhibited excellent Pb(Ⅱ) affinity (q max = 1396.14 mg/g) but limited Cd(Ⅱ) adsorption capacity (161.21 mg/g). PGB150P significantly enhanced Cd(Ⅱ) adsorption (403.84 mg/g) while retaining high Pb(Ⅱ) adsorption performance (1271.13 mg/g). In the Cd(Ⅱ)–Pb(Ⅱ) system, the adsorption capacities of Cd(Ⅱ) and Pb(Ⅱ) decreased to 170.17 and 980.05 mg/g, respectively, with Pb(Ⅱ) showing a stronger competitive advantage. Adsorption followed the Langmuir model and was spontaneous endothermic chemisorption controlled by film and intraparticle diffusion. PGB150P exhibited a broad pH adaptability and strong resistance to common coexisting ions. Mechanistic quantification revealed that Cd(Ⅱ) removal by PGB150P was dominated by precipitation (58.56%) and ion exchange (34.7%), while Pb(Ⅱ) removal was also dominated by precipitation (62.41%) and ion exchange (31.7%). Soil immobilization experiments showed that after 28 days treatment, PGB150P increased the residual fractions of Cd and Pb to 29% and 50%, respectively. In the Cd-Pb system, the residual fractions were increased to 15% and 49%, respectively. After five adsorption–desorption cycles, PGB150P retained about 71% of its Cd(Ⅱ) capacity and 93% of its Pb(Ⅱ) capacity. Cost analysis indicated a total cost of only 39–54 USD/t, substantially lower than that of adsorbents prepared with exogenous phosphate or commercial hydroxyapatite. This study provides theoretical support for the high-value utilization of construction solid waste and the remediation of multi-media heavy metal pollution. In this study, thiourea reduced graphene oxide/NaA zeolite composite (tGO-Zeo) was successfully prepared by a facile two-step synthetic route and used as an efficient adsorbent for removal of Cd(II) from aqueous solution. Characterization of the composite material showed that tGO was entrapped within zeolite crystalline particles and intimately interacted with the zeolite framework. Furthermore, the presence of tGO considerably reduced zeolite crystal size and altered crystal morphology, turning cubic zeolite crystals of micrometer size into nanometer irregular particles. Batch adsorption experiment for Cd(II) removal was conducted and the adsorption performance of tGO-Zeo and Zeo (zeolite) were determined. It was shown that doped tGO significantly enhanced the adsorption capacity of zeolite by 31.54%. The adsorption mechanism differs for tGO-Zeo and Zeo, and tGO-Zeo has higher affinity for Cd(II). The adsorption capacity of tGO-Zeo with a tGO doping amount of 1.26% (wt%) was estimated to be 196 mg/g (1.74 mM/g) at 30 °C and superior to most previously reported zeolite based composites, which often contain large amounts of dopants . The effects of pH and ionic strength on adsorption suggest that ion exchange and coordination are responsible for Cd(II) adsorption by tGO-Zeo. Humic acid can slightly increase Cd(II) adsorption performance of tGO-Zeo, which may be due to tGO-Zeo—humic acid—Cd(II) complexes formation. Therefore, tGO-Zeo composite is a cost-effective and eco-friendly adsorbent for efficient removal of Cd(II) ions from aqueous solutions.

Simultaneous removal of cation (e.g., Pb(Ⅱ), Cd(Ⅱ)) and oxyanion (e.g., As(Ⅴ)) heavy metals have attracted increasing interest for adsorption applications due to the complexity of heavy metal polluted groundwater. Manganese-lanthanum binary oxides immobilized on hydrothermal carbonization carbon (Mn x La 1-x @HTCC) were therefore rationally designed in this work, and the Mn-La oxides immobilized on HTCC exhibited more uniform dispersion compared to bulk phase. In single adsorption systems, superior adsorption of different heavy metals could be achieved by tuning the molar ratio of Mn to La, and Mn leaching was reduced by ∼ 75% compared with Mn@HTCC (without La doping). In the coexisting systems, the simultaneous presence of As(Ⅴ) and Pb(Ⅱ) greatly enhanced adsorption of both two heavy metals, while competition was observed in the coexistence of As(Ⅴ) and Cd(Ⅱ). By analyzing the “release-readsorption” phenomenon of Mn and the variation of Mn valence during adsorption, the different roles of Mn species in the removal of three heavy metals were proposed. Finally, high-speed flow adsorption column experiments confirmed that the Mn x La 1-x @HTCC composite can effectively and continuously adsorb heavy metals accompanied by trace Mn leaching content. Overall, this study indicates the potential of Mn-La carbon composites as a novel adsorbent in groundwater remediation.
